Abstract:The rotation of the principal stress direction has a significant influence on the stress-strain relation and deformation characteristics of sand. This study proposes a hypoplastic model to simulate the noncoaxial response of anisotropic sand subjected to the rotation of the principal stress direction. The densification effect of sand is considered through a properly defined function, enabling the model to simulate a gradually stabilized strain accumulation upon rotational shearing. A fabric tensor is used to describe the anisotropic microstructure of sand, and worked in conjunction with the stress in the form of a joint invariant-based state variable to simulate the impact of fabric anisotropy on the behavior of sand. The fabric tensor is integrated with the hypoplastic flow direction, making the model capable of generating a noncoaxial response. The model response was compared with the experimental data for rotational shear tests under various conditions.

Abstract:Multidirectional shearing involves shear stress changes in both magnitude and direction. When subjected to multidirectional shearing, soils exhibit complex responses that are significantly different from those under unidirectional shearing. A sophisticated constitutive model is required to realistically predict soil behaviors under multidirectional shearing conditions. In this study, the performance of a hypoplastic model with intergranular strain for simulating the sand response under multidirectional cyclic shearing is evaluated. To improve the simulative capability of the model for multidirectional shearing, two major modifications are made. First, the model is extended to account for the fabric change effect, enabling a satisfactory simulation of the effective stress reduction under undrained cyclic loading. Second, a new unloading criterion is incorporated based on a bounding surface concept, aiming to resolve the limitation of the rapid buildup of pore pressure in the original model under multidirectional shearing. The significance of these modifications is illustrated by comparing simulations with and without them.

Abstract:Non-coaxial response refers to the deviation between the directions of the principal stress and plastic strain increment. In this paper, an extended hypoplastic model is proposed based on the anisotropic critical state theory, to describe the non-coaxial and anisotropic response of sand subjected to both monotonic loading and rotation of principal stress axis. A fabric tensor that characterizes the internal structure of sand is introduced into a hypoplastic model, to reflect the effect of fabric anisotropy on the dilatancy and strength of sand. A Lode-angle-dependent hypoplastic potential surface is employed, rendering the flow direction no longer co-directional with the stress tensor in the deviatoric plane. The fabric tensor is further incorporated into the flow direction, enabling the model to generate a non-coaxial response. Upon shearing, the fabric evolves toward the loading direction following a properly defined evolution law, and the model response becomes purely coaxial at the critical state when the fabric becomes co-directional with the loading direction. The tangential loading effect is further introduced to simulate the stiffness degradation of sand during undrained rotational shearing. The model is demonstrated to be capable of simulating the prismatic yet complex anisotropic behavior of sand under both proportional and non-proportional loading conditions.

Abstract:The undrained response of sand under complex loading conditions involving principal stress rotation (PSR) is of particular interest in practical engineering. Although this subject has been studied extensively through laboratory experiments, more in-depth investigations of the microscopic mechanism underlying the macroscale observations under PSR have not been reported adequately. The discrete element method (DEM) plays an important role in the investigation of the elementary behavior of sand subjected to various complex loading conditions. It could enable us to comprehend the evolution of particle-scale quantities. Therefore, an advanced discrete element approach that can apply an arbitrary undrained loading path is implemented in this study. Based on this approach, numerical algorithms that implement undrained rotational shear are elucidated, and undrained pure PSR tests are conducted on anisotropic specimens with varying stress ratios, densities, and intermediate principal stress ratios. The evolution of the fabric anisotropy of specimens under PSR is quantified by a contact normal fabric tensor. The macroscopic mechanical results are found to be consistent with the experimental results. The interplay between fabric evolution with stress and strain increments is examined. The findings provide effective microscopic insights into the anisotropic responses of granular materials under rotational shear.
Failure Mechanisms of Sand under Asymmetrical Cyclic Loading Conditions: Experimental Observation and Constitutive Modelling

Abstract:In practical engineering, natural soil deposits often sustain an initial driving force prior to cyclic shear, owing to earthquakes, traffic and waves; such asymmetrical loading conditions may significantly affect the liquefaction susceptibility and failure mechanism of sand. To understand the typical cyclic liquefaction responses, comprehensive asymmetrical cyclic loading tests were conducted on sand samples subjected to either compressional or extensional static stress. The results indicated that different stress conditions can result in three distinct failure mechanisms: flow liquefaction, cyclic mobility and residual deformation accumulation. According to the experimental observations, an anisotropic sand model was developed within the framework of the anisotropic critical state theory. The model employed a fabric-dependent dilatancy, and accounted for the effects of the fabric evolution and accumulated loading index on the plastic hardening, in order to better reflect the cyclic degradation of the plastic modulus. The predictive capacity of the model was confirmed through undrained monotonic test results for samples with different densities. Comparisons between the model responses and experimental results indicated the excellent capabilities of the developed model in terms of capturing the typical deformation, strength and fabric characteristics of different cyclic failure mechanisms of sand under either symmetrical or asymmetrical loading conditions.

Abstract:The mechanical behavior of sand is very complex, and depends on factors including confining pressure, density, and drainage condition. A soil mass can be contractive or dilative when subjected to shear loading, and eventually reaches an ultimate state, referred to as the critical state in soil mechanics. Conventional approach to explore the mechanical behavior of sand mainly relies on the experimental tests in laboratory. This paper gives an alternative view to this subject using discrete element method (DEM), which has attracted much attention in recent years. The implementation of the DEM is carried out by a series of numerical tests on granular assemblies with varying initial densities and confining pressures, under different test configurations. The results demonstrate that such numerical simulations can produce correct responses of the sand behavior in general, including the critical state response, as compared to experimental observations. In addition, the DEM can further provide details of the microstructure evolutions during shearing processes, and the resulting induced anisotropy can be fully captured and quantified in the particle scale.

Abstract:This paper presents a simple but workable constitutive model for the stress–strain relationship of sandy soil during the process of tunneling construction disturbance in coastal cities. The model was developed by linking the parameter K and internal angle φ of the Duncan–Chang model with the disturbed degree of sand, in which the effects of the initial void ratio on the strength deformation property of sands are considered using a unified disturbance function based on disturbed state concept theory. Three cases were analyzed to investigate the validity of the proposed constitutive model considering disturbance. After validation, the proposed constitutive model was further incorporated into a 3D finite element framework to predict the soil deformation caused by shield construction. It was found that the simulated results agreed well with the analytical solution, indicating that the developed numerical model with proposed constitutive relationship is capable of characterizing the mechanical properties of sand under tunneling construction disturbance.

Abstract:The impact of fabric anisotropy on the behaviour of granular soil remains a subject of great interest. In particular, the effects of principal stress rotation on the undrained response of saturated sand are not fully understood. This paper describes an experimental investigation conducted in an automated hollow cylinder apparatus into the undrained anisotropic behaviour of saturated sand in rotational shear, which is defined as a class of non-proportional loading with a continuous rotation of the principal stress directions but a constant deviatoric stress. Special attention in this investigation was placed on the influence of the relative magnitude of the intermediate principal stress, characterised by the parameter b = (σ2 − σ3)/(σ1 − σ3), on the pore pressure response and deformation characteristics. The experimental observations indicate that soil specimens, even in very dense state, were weakened by the build-up of pore water pressure in rotational shear. The intermediate principal stress parameter b was not a negligible factor for the behaviour of saturated sand in the rotation shear, but had significant impact. Under otherwise identical conditions, the soil specimen rotationally sheared under the condition b = 0 exhibited a much stronger resistance to pore pressure build-up and a less dramatic stiffness degradation than that sheared under the condition b = 1·0. This observation is considered to be directly associated with the soil fabric anisotropy.

Abstract:Principal stress axes rotation influences the stress-strain behavior of sand under wave loading. A constitutive model for sand, which considers principal stress orientation and is based on generalized plasticity theory, is proposed. The new model, which employs stress invariants and a discrete memory factor during reloading, is original because it quantifies model parameters using experimental data. Four sets of hollow torsion experiments were conducted to calibrate the parameters and predict the capability of the proposed model, which describes the effects of principal stress orientation on the behavior of sand. The results prove the effectiveness of the proposed calibration method.

Abstract:The deformation behavior of sands under cyclic rotation of principal stress axes can be concluded as follows based on the current test results. Firstly,the volumetric strain induced is increased with the increase of cycles number,yet its increase rate is lowered with its progressive accumulation. Secondly,the hysteretic loop is produced for the shear stress and strain components. And the unclosed hysteretic loop tends to be closed with the increase of rotation cycle numbers. Thirdly,the obvious non-coaxiality between directions of the plastic strain increment and stress shows segment characteristics. Finally,the effects of the intermediate principal stress parameter are significant. The accumulation rate of the volumetric strain is increased with the increase of the intermediate principal stress parameter under otherwise identical conditions. Based on the above physical fundamentals of sands subjected to cyclic rotation of principal stress axes,a new cyclic elastoplastic constitutive model for saturated sands aiming at describing the deformation behavior of sands due to cyclic rotation of principal stress axes is developed. And its effectiveness under the complex stress paths including cyclic rotation of principal stress axes is verified by comparison of simulation model and test results;and it is shown that the proposed constitutive model is capable of predicting reasonably the developments of strain components and the volumetric strain in various conditions including principal stress axes rotation.

Abstract:A three‐dimensional (3D) anisotropic plasticity model for sand is formulated in this study to provide a constitutive description for both radial and principal stress axes rotation (PSAR) loading‐induced behavior under various conditions with a single set of model parameters. The model has zero elastic range, with plastic loading and flow direction dependent on both current stress and stress rate direction. Fabric tensor is introduced along with its evolution to achieve anisotropic plastic modulus, dilatancy, and flow rule formulations. Increase in plastic modulus under continuous PSAR achieves eventual convergence of strain accumulation. A unique decomposition of dilatancy controls the overall contraction and periodic dilatancy oscillation under PSAR. The performance of the model is first thoroughly evaluated based on drained/undrained, monotonic shear/PSAR tests on Toyoura sand, showing its effectiveness in reproducing the behavior of real sand. Discrete element method numerical test results are then adopted for comprehensive calibration of the model parameters, and then for validation of the model under 3D PSAR in any arbitrary direction. These comparisons highlight the model's capability in simulating the behavior of granular soil under 3D stress paths.
The mechanisms of non-coaxial deformation for anisotropic sand under fixed principal stress axes shearing

Abstract:Sand has been shown to exhibit non-coaxial deformation behaviour even when sheared under fixed principal stress axes. Such behaviour imposes a strong influence on the softening and bifurcation of soil. Two different modes of strain increment principal axes deviation from stress principal axes have been reported from experiments on sand, which have et to be fully explained at present. Hence. two separate mechanisms for the generation of non-coaxiality in sand has been proposed: (1) the existence of the weakest shear resistance within the bedding plane. and (2) the high compressibilit in the direction parallel to the bedding plane. The combination of these two mechanisms can provide clear explanation to the two modes of the non-coaxial deformation. Both the mechanisms are supported by experimental data, and can benefit the constitutive modelling of non-coaxial deformation of anisotropic sand.

Abstract:Traditional plastic dilatancy models are based on coaxial plastic flow rule when describing relations between the stress ratio and plastic strain increment, in which stress-dilatancy behavior of soil only depends on stress ratio. A large number of test results show that the stress and strain are non-coaxial during plastic flow under complex stress conditions involving principal stress rotation; so the non-coaxiality cannot be ignored when analyzing stress-dilatancy behavior of soil. In order to investigate the effects of non-coaxiality on the stress-dilatancy behavior of sand under complex stress conditions involving principal stress axes rotation, a series of fixed principal stress axes shear tests and pure principal stress rotation tests and combined loading tests are conducted on the saturated sand using a hollow cylinder apparatus. The test results indicate that the stress-strain non-coaxiality would result in the deviation between the stress-dilatancy curves and Rowe-line under different stress paths, which can be modified through the Gutiereez's modified dilatancy equation by introducing a non-coaxiality factor. In this way, Rowe's stress-dilatancy equation can be made more applicable to loadings involving principal axes stress rotation.

Abstract:Principal stress axes (PSA) rotation tests with different rotation axes are conducted using discrete element modeling to investigate the influence of PSA rotation sequences in various directions on the deformation of sand. Results indicate that the volume strain is dependent on the rotation sequence during the first few cycles of stress rotation, but the ultimate volumetric strain after significant principal stress axes rotation load cycles in all the different directions is independent of the rotation sequence.

Abstract:Abstract Simple shear behavior of sand is representative in geotechnical engineering with potential failure occurred along a thin shear zone. The strength and deformation of sand under simple shear are accompanied with principal stress rotation (PSR). This study proposes a modified SANISAND‐F model to capture the simple shear behavior of sand with PSR. A new plastic flow rule along with a kinematic hardening modulus is proposed to consider the evolution of the PSR and intermediate stress ratio. The developed model, with thirteen parameters, can reasonably the capture the stress‐strain and PSR of sand under simple shear.

Abstract:A bounding surface model is proposed to reproduce the cyclic responses of saturated soft clay under principal stress rotation induced by wave loads. While extensively reported in experimental studies, this particular type of clay response has not been adequately addressed by constitutive modeling. By incorporating the mapping rules of relocatable projection center into the bounding surface, the plastic effects under pure principal stress rotation can be established. To represent the non-coaxiality during pure principal stress rotation, the presented model employs a non-coaxial flow rule sharing the same directions with the non-coaxial stress rate. However, it has been modified to related to the coaxial strain rate and the current stress ratio. Besides, the anisotropic elasticity is introduced for simulating the effects on plastic accumulation behavior during principal stress rotation. The developed model is validated through pure principal stress rotation tests of Shanghai clay and Wenzhou clay. The comparisons show that the proposed model can reasonably reproduce cyclic responses of saturated soft clay under principal stress rotation induced by wave loads.

Abstract:The soil around the foundations of offshore engineering experienced the principal stress axes rotation caused by the wave loadings. To investigate the influence of the principal stress axes rotation on the soil stress-strain relationship, a series of pure principal stress axes rotation tests under drained/undrained conditions were carried out with a hollow cylinder apparatus. The undrained test results show that the deviatoric stress, relative density, and starting point of rotation affect the mechanical properties of sand. Through the analysis of pore water pressure accumulation in the 1st cycle, it was observed that more pore pressure accumulates in Quadrants II and III, while relatively less accumulates in Quadrants I and IV. Under drained and undrained conditions, the non-coaxial behavior of the soil differs. The non-coaxiality can be significantly observed in the drained test, and the direction of strain increment tends to the stress increment direction when the cycle number increases.

Abstract:A numerical investigation on the behavior of granular materials subjected to the rotation of principal stresses using the discrete element method is presented. A numerical procedure is developed to implement the two-dimensional arbitrary stress or strain paths imposed on polygonal specimens. Significant volumetric strain can be obtained and granular assembly appears to develop an anisotropic internal structure characterized by the contact-normal-based fabric tensor in due course, with its direction being rotated with the rotation of the principal stress. The observations indicate a significant degree of non-coaxiality between the principal-stress direction and the principal-strain increment direction. An ultimate state can be reached after sufficiently large numbers of cycling, resulting in a constant fabric norm and a circular strain trajectory in the deviatoric space. The boundary work, dissipation, and strain energy, are also registered during the entire loading process and its correlation between non-coaxial deformations is analyzed from micro-scale perspective. Before the ultimate state is reached, the applied work is partially dissipated by frictional sliding, and the remainder is stored as the strain energy within the specimen. When the ultimate state is reached, however, no change in the strain energy is obtained, and the plastic work is entirely dissipated, as the elastic portion of the free energy increment only depends on the elastic strain.

Abstract:SANISAND is the name of a family of bounding surface plasticity constitutive models for sand within the framework of critical state theory, which have been able to realistically simulate the sand behavior under conventional monotonic and cyclic loading paths. In order to incorporate the important role of evolving fabric anisotropy, one such model was modified within the framework of the new anisotropic critical state theory and named SANISAND‐F model. Yet the response under continuous stress principal axes rotation requires further modification to account for the effect of ensuing noncoaxiality on the dilatancy and plastic modulus. This modification is simpler than what is often proposed in the literature, since it does not incorporate an additional plastic loading mechanism and/or multiple dilatancy and plastic modulus expressions. The new model named SANISAND‐FN is presented herein and is validated against published data for loading that includes drained stress principal axes rotation on Toyoura sand.

Abstract:This paper establishes a non-equilibrium thermodynamic constitutive model that can predict the undrained shear behavior of saturated sand. Starting from the basic laws of thermodynamics, the model does not require the classical concepts in elasto-plastic models, such as the yield function, the flow rule, and the hardening rule. It is also different from the existing thermodynamic constitutive models in soil mechanics literatures. The model does not use a complex nonlinear elastic potential as usually and introduces a coupling energy dissipative mechanism between the viscosity and elasticity relaxation, which is essential in granular materials. Then this model was used to simulate the undrained shear test of Toyoura sand. The model can predict the critical state, dilatancy-contraction and hardening-softening characteristics of sand during undrained triaxial shearing.
