Abstract:In this study, the planetary ball milling with CaO addition was used to remediate lindane-contaminated soil. Based on Hertzian theory, a mathematical model was proposed to simulate the trajectory of grinding ball and the local energy transfer during a planetary operation at the disk rotation velocities of 150-250 rpm. Besides, the influence of different parameters on lindane removal in soil was investigated, whose results showed that disk rotation velocity and reagent-to-soil ratio had a positive effect, while soil moisture, initial concentration of lindane, and mass of polluted soil demonstrated a negative influence. The mechanochemical method exhibited a higher degradation performance at 3 wt% CaO addition, and a disk rotation velocity of 250 rpm. Active species generated by ball collisions in the presence of CaO, especially superoxide (center dot O2- ) demonstrated a significant role in participating in the lindane conversion. In combination with GCMS and XPS analysis, the proposed model provides insight into mechanochemical remediation process from physical and chemical perspectives, which mainly includes four main steps: mixing, inducing, chemical reaction, and structure destruction.

Abstract:In this study, 3,4,3 ',4 '-Tetrachlorobiphenyl (PCB77) contaminated soil was treated by ball milling. Experimental results have demonstrated that reagent-to-soil ratio, revolution speed, milling ball size, ball-to-soil ratio, soil moisture and initial concentration of PCB77 all influenced the degradation of PCB77. The removal efficiency of PCB77 could reach 79.6 % after 12 h of ball milling (ball-soil ratio 8:1, revolution speed 250 rpm, reagent-soil ratio 1:12). After ball milling, the size of soil particles decreased significantly, while the specific surface area and pore size increased. Based on the degradation byproducts determined by GC-MS, the possible degradation pathway of PCB77 by ball milling was inferred. Momentously, we attempted to combine ball mill and nonthermal plasma (NTP) to treat PCB77-contaminated soil. The contaminated soil pretreated by ball milling exhibited a higher removal efficiency of PCB77 in subsequent Dielectric barrier discharges (DBD) treatment compared to untreated soil. Quantitative detection of total organic carbon and inorganic chlorine in soil revealed that plasma technology exhibits superior capabilities in degradation mineralization and dechlorination of PCB77 compared to ball milling. The innovative technology not only efficiently enhances the removal efficiency of PCB77 but also eliminates the risk of secondary pollution introduced by reagents used in ball milling, thereby presenting a novel and effective strategy for soil remediation.

Abstract:Mechanochemical (MC) treatment has been widely proposed to degrade chlorinated organics in various matrix materials. In this study, fly ash from municipal solid waste incineration was grinded without any addition, using an all-dimensional planetary ball mill. The treated fly ash samples were characterised using X-ray diffraction, Raman spectra, scanning electron microscopy and X-ray energy-dispersive spectroscopy. The residual content of polychlorinated dibenzo- p -dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/F) was monitored, as well as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), a potential precursor of PCDD/F and amorphous carbon or graphite. Finally, de novo formation experiments were performed to test the chemical reactivity of the treated fly ash. The PCDD/F in milled samples was compared to those resulting from de novo tests on these same samples. The results suggest that both milling as well as de novo tests significantly alter the PCDD/F signature, suggesting substantial differences in the mechanisms of formation and destruction.

Abstract:Chemical recycling technologies are the most promising for a waste-to-energy/material recovery of plastic waste. However, 30% of such waste cannot be treated in this way due to the presence of halogenated organic compounds, which are often utilized as flame retardants. In fact, high quantities of hydrogen halides and dioxin would form. In order to enabling such huge amount of plastic waste as viable feedstock for recycling, an investigation on mechanochemical pre-treatment by high energy ball milling is carried out on polypropylene containing decabromodiphenyl ether. Results demonstrate that co-milling with zero valent iron and quartz sand ensures complete debromination and mineralization of the flame retardant. Furthermore, a comparative experiment demonstrates that the mechanochemical debromination kinetics is roughly proportional to the polymer-to-haloorganics mass ratio.

Abstract:Mechanochemical destruction by grinding with additives in high energy ball milling has been identified as a good alternative to traditional incineration for the disposal of wastes containing halogenated organic pollutants. Despite CaO normally used as an additive, recently Fe+SiO2 has been used to replace CaO for a faster destruction. In the present study, zero-valent metals (Al, Zn, besides Fe) together with SiO2 were investigated for their efficiencies of prompting the destruction of dechlorane plus (DP). Aluminum was found of be the best with a destruction percentage of nearly 99% for either syn- or anti-DP after 2.5h milling. In comparison, only 88/85% and 37/32% of syn-/anti-DP were destroyed when using zinc and iron after the same time, respectively. The detected water soluble chloride was lower than the stoichiometric amount containing in the original DP samples, due to the Si-Cl bond formed during the process. The potential fate of C and Cl present in DP is in the form of inorganic carbon, inorganic Cl and formation of Si-Cl bonds, respectively. The results suggested that Al+SiO2 is promising in the mechanochemical destruction of chlorinated organic pollutants like DP.

Abstract:Petroleum-contaminated soil (PCS) requires an integrated treatment strategy for the simultaneous cleanup of pollutants and beneficial reuse of post-remediation soil. A combined process of ball milling and pyrolysis was used to treat PCS. The obtained carbonized soil (BRCS) was used to adsorb heavy metals and activate persulfate (PS) oxidation. The maximum adsorption capacity of BRCS for Pb 2+ reaches 983.7 mg/g. When the BRCS and PS dosage is 3 g/L and 2 g/L, respectively, the removal rate of aniline (100 mg/L) is close to 100 %. Ball milling pretreatment significantly improves the heavy metal adsorption property and persulfate activation performance of the pyrolytic carbonized soil. According to sequential extraction, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance , and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses, ball milling pretreatment considerably increases the adsorption capacities of carbonized soil for heavy metals by enhancing carbonate binding and Fe/Mn oxide complexation/coprecipitation. Quenching experiments show that the nonradical path dominates the persulfate oxidation process. Electron paramagnetic resonance and linear sweep voltammetry analyses show that ball milling pretreatment produces more surface-bound semiquinone radical, which greatly activates persulfate oxidation by accelerating direct electron transfer. This study proposes an integrated resource utilization strategy for carbonized soil by stimulation of endogenous functional components in carbonized soil and beneficial reuse of hazardous environmental permanent free radicals.

Abstract:Ball milling is an environmentally friendly technology for the remediation of petroleum-contaminated soil (PCS), but the cleanup of organic pollutants requires a long time, and the post-remediation soil needs an economically viable disposal/reuse strategy due to its vast volume. The present paper develops a ball milling process under oxygen atmosphere to enhance PCS remediation and reuse the obtained carbonized soil (BCS-O) as wastewater treatment materials. The total petroleum hydrocarbon removal rates by ball milling under vacuum, air, and oxygen atmospheres are 39.83%, 55.21%, and 93.84%, respectively. The Langmuir and pseudo second-order models satisfactorily describe the adsorption capacity and behavior of BCS-O for transition metals. The Cu2+, Ni2+, and Mn2+ adsorbed onto BCS-O were mainly bound to metal carbonates and metal oxides. Furthermore, BCS-O can effectively activate persulfate (PDS) oxidation to degrade aniline, while BCS-O loaded with transition metal (BCS-O-Me) shows better activation efficiency and reusability. BCS-O and BCS-O-Me activated PDS oxidation systems are dominated by 1O2 oxidation and electron transfer. The main active sites are oxygen-containing functional groups, vacancy defects, and graphitized carbon. The oxygen-containing functional groups and vacancy defects primarily activate PDS to generate 1O2 and attack aniline. Graphitized carbon promotes aniline degradation by accelerating electron transfer. The paper develops an innovative strategy to simultaneously realize efficient remediation of PCS and sequential reuse of the post-remediation soil.
Mechanochemical Degradation of PCDD/Fs in Fly Ash Within Different Milling Systems.

Abstract:Two distinct mechanochemical degradation (MCD) methods are adopted to eliminate the polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and -furans (PCDD/Fs) from fly ash in municipal solid waste incinerators. First, experiments are conducted in a planetary ball mill for selecting suitable additives, and an additive system of SiO2-Al is chosen for its high-efficiency, low-price, and good practicability. The I-TEQ value of PCDD/Fs in washed fly ash decreases dramatically from 6.75 to 0.64 ng I-TEQ/g, after 14 h of milling with 10 wt % SiO2-Al, and dechlorination is identified as the major degradation pathway. Then, this additive is applied in a horizontal ball mill, and the results indicate that the degradation of PCDD/Fs follows the kinetic model established in planetary ball mills. However, longer milling time is required for the same supplied-energy because of the lower energy density of horizontal ball mills, resulting in partial loss of Al reactivity and a lower degradation efficiency of PCDD/Fs. During MCD, the evolution of PCDD/F-signatures is analogous, indicating a similar acting mechanism of all additives in both the two milling systems. Finally, a major dechlorination pathway of PCDD-congeners is proposed based on the signature analysis of congeners synthesized from chlorophenols.
Mechanochemical destruction of DDTs with Fe-Zn bimetal in a high-energy planetary ball mill

Abstract:Mechanochemical destruction has been proposed as a promising, non-combustion technology for the disposal of toxic, halogenated, organic pollutants. In the study presented, additives including Fe, Zn, Fe-Zn bimetal, CaO and Fe2O3 were tested for their effectiveness to remove DDTs by MC. The results showed that Fe-Zn bimetal was the most efficient additive, with 98% of DDTs removed after 4h. The Fe-Zn mass ratio was optimized to avoid possible spontaneous combustion of the ground sample during subsample collection. Inorganic water-soluble chloride in the ground sample increased by 91% after 4h of grinding, which indicated dechlorination during destruction of DDTs. In addition, relationships were established between the rate constant and the rotation speed or the charge ratio. Discrete Element Method (DEM) modeling was used to simulate the motion of the grinding ball and calculate both total impact energy and normal impact energy. The latter expressed a stronger, linear correlation with the rate constant. Therefore, normal impact energy is proposed to be the main driving force in the MC destruction of DDTs.

Abstract:Soil contaminated by polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) is a ubiquitous problem in the world, which can cause significant risks to human health and the environment. Mechanochemical destruction (MCD) has been recognized as a promising technology for the destruction of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and other organic molecules in both solid waste and contaminated soil. However, few studies have been published about the application of MCD technology for the remediation of PCB contaminated soil. In the present study, the feasibility of destroying PCBs in contaminated soil by co-grinding with and without additives in a planetary ball mill was investigated. After 4 h milling time, more than 96% of PCBs in contaminated soil samples were destroyed. The residual concentrations of PCBs decreased from 1000 mg/kg to below the provisional Basel Convention limit of less than 50 mg/kg. PCDD/F present in the original soil at levels of 4200 ng TEQ/kg was also destroyed with even a slightly higher destruction efficiency. Only minor dechlorinations of the PCBs were observed and the destruction of the hydrocarbon skeleton is proposed as the main degradation pathway of PCBs.

Abstract:Mechanochemical (MC) methods have shown an excellent performance while decomposing a number of halogenated persistent organic pollutants (POPs). In this study, a number of MC degradation tests were performed on hexachlorobenzene (HCBz), using an all-dimensional planetary ball mill and applying selected additives, including CaO, CaO-SiO2, CaO-Al2O3, CaO-Al and Fe-SiO2. After 8 h of milling, up to 99.7% of the original HCBz was removed by processing with a combined CaO-Al additive. Different ratios of Al to CaO were compared and the highest (99.70%) destruction efficiency of HCBz was achieved after 3 h by the additive CaO-Al (11.1% added), considered to be the most practical pair. Sequential dechlorination of HCBz and polymerisation of the resulting residual benzene should be the main degradation pathway; this conclusion is reached by observing lower chlorinated intermediates and graphite and amorphous carbon as final products. Strong radical signals and micro-spheres as well as tribo-microplasma phenomena were induced by severe mechanical ball milling.
Mechanochemistry based method for treating perfluorinated and polyfluorinated compound solid waste

Abstract:The invention discloses a mechanochemistry-based method for treating perfluorinated and polyfluorinated compound solid waste in the technical field of environmental pollution waste treatment. The method comprises the following steps of: mixing perfluorinated or polyfluorinated compound solid waste with a defluorination reagent at normal temperature and pressure; then, putting in a planetary high-energy ball mill reactor; and efficiently degrading and defluorinating perfluorinated and polyfluorinated compounds by utilizing a mechanochemistry reaction. When being used for degrading the perfluorinated and polyfluorinated compounds, the method has the following advantages that the process flow is simple; the reaction condition is mild (normal temperature and pressure); the reaction energy consumption and the operating cost are relatively low; a target pollutant is thoroughly degraded and defluorinated; a final product is totally inorganic and harmless; and no harmful gas or liquid cannot be generated during the process.

Abstract:Mechanochemical degradation (MCD) technology has shown its remarkable potential in the disposal of persistent organochlorines in a non-combustion manner. In the present study, endosulfan, as the newly listed persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in the Stockholm Convention, was investigated for its feasibility of mechanochemical destruction using high-energy ball milling. Using calcium oxide (CaO) as a co-milling reagent, the degradation efficiency of endosulfan was nearly 100% after ball milling for 60 min, while the dechlorination efficiency and the sulfate formation efficiency were delayed for endosulfan degradation. After ball milling for 120 min, the dechlorination efficiency and sulfate formation efficiency reached 87.55% and 26.28%, respectively. Based on the measurement results from various material characterization approaches, the main degradation pathway of endosulfan was proposed as sequential dechlorination followed by the destruction of hydrocarbon skeleton. The GC-MS analysis confirmed that complete desulfurization and dechlorination had been realized finally. This study provides an option for the way toward the efficient and rapid destruction of endosulfan as a new POPs using mechanochemical technology.

Abstract:A simple mechanochemical (MC) method is used to treat petroleum-contaminated soil and prepare a heavy metal adsorbent in one step. XRD, Raman, FT-IR, VSM, BET, and XPS were used to characterize the adsorbent. After MC treatment, the dissolved total petroleum hydrocarbons of the adsorbent is less than 1 mg·L−1, and a porous structure and carbonization phenomenon are evident. The specific surface area and cumulative void volume increase, and the adsorption pore size decreases. On the surface of soil, the percentages of iron oxides, carbonates, CO, -C-O-H, -COOH, and π unsaturated bonds increase. The Langmuir model shows that the maximum adsorption capacity of Pb2+, Cu2+, Cd2+, and Zn2+ are 338.58, 51.61, 32.34, and 25.05 mg·g−1, respectively. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model fits the Pb adsorption process, indicating the domination of chemical adsorption. GC-MS shows that petroleum hydrocarbons are completely degraded. The Tessier continuous extraction result shows that heavy metals are bound to carbonate, iron manganese oxide, and organic matter. The MC treatment achieves deep cleanup and resource utilization of petroleum-contaminated soil through the formation of amorphous carbon, carbonates, and iron oxides on the surface of soil particles. The material is magnetic and can be recycled when used in wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Efficient chemical upcycling of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) waste into value-added chemicals has attracted considerable attention in a broad range of environmental and energy fields. The mechanochemical depolymerization of PET waste emerges as a potential approach for large-scale industrial applications, enabling the conversion of PET waste into reusable monomers. Herein, we conducted a pilot-scale test by depolymerization of 1 kg of PET waste in a planetary ball mill. The incremental optimization of the depolymerization process was investigated systematically by adjusting parameters such as the type of ball mill, the ratio of liquid volume to solid mass, the grinding jars, and the milling frequency. Remarkably, monomers with a yield of more than 97 % when converting kilogram-scale PET waste, including used textiles and plastic bottles, were achieved in a planetary ball mill at 400 rpm for 80 min. This notable enhancement will substantially benefit future potential industrial-scale applications.

Abstract:Serpentinite is the main component of the worn metal reconditioner formulation chemistry and is supposed to be functioning by converting, under shearing strain forces, into oxygen-releasing species through mechanochemical / tribochemical activation and relaxation. Research in this effort employed a high energy planetary ball mill to conduct simulation experiments for understanding the mechanically activated oxidation of GCr15 steel ball surfaces in the course of milling the serpentinite powders in sealed steel containers at room temperatures. As a function of milling time, variations of chemical states of the milled ball surfaces were characterized with SEM, EDX and XPS. Examinations evidenced that plastic deformed layers emerged on the working surfaces of the milled steel balls. Analyses of the milled serpentinite powders were correlated to observations of the chemical and structural changes on the working surfaces of the milled steel balls. Role of the milled serpentinite powder in stimulating the mechanochemical oxidation of the working surfaces of steel balls was briefly expounded. Copyright © 2005 by ASME.

Abstract:Polyvinyl chloride (PVC), one of the most extensively produced polymers, has raised significant environment and public health concerns due to its persistence in ecosystem, long-term accumulation and associated toxicity. The well-established mechanical recycling approach for treating waste PVC often result in polymer degradation and release of hazardous by-products, such as corrosive HCl. We envisage that mechanical recycling in tandem with a halogenation reaction provide a new solution to waste PVC management. Herein, we demonstrated that PVC plastic could serve as chlorination reagents, in combination with triboelectric catalyst, to achieve efficient halogenation of alcohols under ball milling condition. The triboelectric catalyst, TiO2, mediates the single electron transfer process that promotes the dehydrochlorination of PVC, thereby enabling the in-situ chlorination of alcohols. This strategy was applicable to a variety of aliphatic and benzylic alcohols, yielding the corresponding organic chlorides in moderate to excellent yields. In particular, the yield of benzyl chloride reached 95% after 4 h of ball milling. Structural analysis confirmed that polymer formed by dehydrochlorination of PVC contained olefin, carbonyl and aromatic structures. Additionally, Cl could be completely removed, and the molecular weight decreased from 65.0 kDa to 4.6 kDa after recycling and reusing PVC five times. This mechanochemical approach was also successfully applied in real plastics applications and scale-up experiments. Overall, this method provides inspiration for using PVC as a chlorine source to initiate chemical reactions through mechanochemical approaches.

Vitrification of petrochemical sludge for rapid, facile, and sustainable fixation of heavy metals

Abstract:Highly effective re-utilization of hazardous petrochemical wastes plays important roles in the fields of energy science, environmental remediation, and chemical engineering. To overcome the problems caused by high temperature and long-term molten ablation to the refractory material in the furnace during the vitrification of petrochemical residual sludge, here we present a facile strategy to promote the quick vitrification of petrochemical residual sludge through the temperature-stage disposal of raw sludge, followed by the addition of other doping materials such as SiO 2 , B 2 O 3 , and CaO to form binary SiO 2 /B 2 O 3 - and trinary SiO 2 /B 2 O 3 /CaO-doped slag materials. The obtained results indicate that the sintered slag exhibited quicker vitrification (15 min) against that of the raw sludge (more than 110 min). In addition, the slag reveals higher fixation efficiency towards every heavy metal than sludge, and it is found that the slag exhibited more than 80% enhancement towards the fixation of Zn and As than raw sludge. Based on the obtained results, we propose potential mechanisms on the vitrification and metal fixation of petrochemical sludge and slag. The sustainability of the temperature-stage disposal of sludge is further evaluated using the Sustainability Footprint method (an evaluation method based on sustainability). It is expected that the methods and findings shown in this work are helpful for readers to develop facile techniques to promote the re-utilization of hazardous wastes in the fields of materials science, chemical engineering, as well as energy and environmental science.
