Abstract:In this study, the planetary ball milling with CaO addition was used to remediate lindane-contaminated soil. Based on Hertzian theory, a mathematical model was proposed to simulate the trajectory of grinding ball and the local energy transfer during a planetary operation at the disk rotation velocities of 150-250 rpm. Besides, the influence of different parameters on lindane removal in soil was investigated, whose results showed that disk rotation velocity and reagent-to-soil ratio had a positive effect, while soil moisture, initial concentration of lindane, and mass of polluted soil demonstrated a negative influence. The mechanochemical method exhibited a higher degradation performance at 3 wt% CaO addition, and a disk rotation velocity of 250 rpm. Active species generated by ball collisions in the presence of CaO, especially superoxide (center dot O2- ) demonstrated a significant role in participating in the lindane conversion. In combination with GCMS and XPS analysis, the proposed model provides insight into mechanochemical remediation process from physical and chemical perspectives, which mainly includes four main steps: mixing, inducing, chemical reaction, and structure destruction.

Abstract:In this study, 3,4,3 ',4 '-Tetrachlorobiphenyl (PCB77) contaminated soil was treated by ball milling. Experimental results have demonstrated that reagent-to-soil ratio, revolution speed, milling ball size, ball-to-soil ratio, soil moisture and initial concentration of PCB77 all influenced the degradation of PCB77. The removal efficiency of PCB77 could reach 79.6 % after 12 h of ball milling (ball-soil ratio 8:1, revolution speed 250 rpm, reagent-soil ratio 1:12). After ball milling, the size of soil particles decreased significantly, while the specific surface area and pore size increased. Based on the degradation byproducts determined by GC-MS, the possible degradation pathway of PCB77 by ball milling was inferred. Momentously, we attempted to combine ball mill and nonthermal plasma (NTP) to treat PCB77-contaminated soil. The contaminated soil pretreated by ball milling exhibited a higher removal efficiency of PCB77 in subsequent Dielectric barrier discharges (DBD) treatment compared to untreated soil. Quantitative detection of total organic carbon and inorganic chlorine in soil revealed that plasma technology exhibits superior capabilities in degradation mineralization and dechlorination of PCB77 compared to ball milling. The innovative technology not only efficiently enhances the removal efficiency of PCB77 but also eliminates the risk of secondary pollution introduced by reagents used in ball milling, thereby presenting a novel and effective strategy for soil remediation.
Horizontal Planetary Mechanochemical Method for Rapid and Efficient Remediation of High-Concentration Lindane-Contaminated Soils in an Alkaline Environment

Abstract:Lindane is a persistent organic pollutant that has attracted worldwide attention because of its threat to human health and environmental security. A horizontal planetary mechanochemical method was developed for rapid and efficient degradation of lindane in soil in an alkaline environment. Under the condition of a very low reagent-to-soil ratio (R = 2%), ball-to-powder ratio (CR = 6:1), rotation speed (r = 300 rpm) and high soil single treatment capacity (SC = 60 g), the lindane in four typical soils (~ 100 mg/kg) can be degraded up to 96.30% in 10 min. This method can also remediate high-concentration lindane-contaminated soil (833 ± 26 mg/kg). The experimental results and theoretical calculations proved that the stepwise dechlorination and final carbonization of lindane in soil are mainly attributed to the combined action of mechanical energy and alkalinity. The bimolecular elimination (E2) reaction was the first step of lindane destruction. Subsequently, the unimolecular elimination (E1) reaction tended to occur with the weakening of alkalinity. Then, benzene was obtained through stepwise hydrogenolysis reaction. The last was the generation of carbon substances by fragmentation or condensation of benzene rings. This work proposes a practical remediation technology for organic contaminated soil and improves the understanding of the degradation pathways of lindane in soil in alkali-assisted mechanochemical system.
Mechanochemical Remediation of PCB Contaminated Soil

Abstract:Soil contaminated by polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) is a ubiquitous problem in the world, which can cause significant risks to human health and the environment. Mechanochemical destruction (MCD) has been recognized as a promising technology for the destruction of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and other organic molecules in both solid waste and contaminated soil. However, few studies have been published about the application of MCD technology for the remediation of PCB contaminated soil. In the present study, the feasibility of destroying PCBs in contaminated soil by co-grinding with and without additives in a planetary ball mill was investigated. After 4 h milling time, more than 96% of PCBs in contaminated soil samples were destroyed. The residual concentrations of PCBs decreased from 1000 mg/kg to below the provisional Basel Convention limit of less than 50 mg/kg. PCDD/F present in the original soil at levels of 4200 ng TEQ/kg was also destroyed with even a slightly higher destruction efficiency. Only minor dechlorinations of the PCBs were observed and the destruction of the hydrocarbon skeleton is proposed as the main degradation pathway of PCBs.

Abstract:Mechanochemical (MC) treatment has been widely proposed to degrade chlorinated organics in various matrix materials. In this study, fly ash from municipal solid waste incineration was grinded without any addition, using an all-dimensional planetary ball mill. The treated fly ash samples were characterised using X-ray diffraction, Raman spectra, scanning electron microscopy and X-ray energy-dispersive spectroscopy. The residual content of polychlorinated dibenzo- p -dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/F) was monitored, as well as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), a potential precursor of PCDD/F and amorphous carbon or graphite. Finally, de novo formation experiments were performed to test the chemical reactivity of the treated fly ash. The PCDD/F in milled samples was compared to those resulting from de novo tests on these same samples. The results suggest that both milling as well as de novo tests significantly alter the PCDD/F signature, suggesting substantial differences in the mechanisms of formation and destruction.

Abstract:Soil pollution has become an important environmental issue worldwide. Various pollutants in soils may harm human health through the food chain. At present, the commonly used remediated methods mainly include thermal treatment, electrokinetic remediation, stabilization/solidification, soil washing, and bioremediation. Among them, ball milling is a non-combustion technology with simple operation, green, and mild reaction conditions as well as wide applicability, and it is promising in the decontamination of soil pollutants. Ball milling techniques have been gradually used for the detoxification of persistent organic pollutants and heavy metals in contaminated soils, while related reviews focusing on ball milling for soil remediation are limited. It is necessary to fully understand the potential and applied value of ball milling for remediation of contaminated soils. Ball milling has different effects and mechanisms for different pollutants and soil types. Therefore, there is a need to systematically review and digest the relevant knowledge on ball milling remediation of contaminated soils. In this review, the main types of ball milling and influencing factors are summarized, and the mechanisms of ball milling for soil remediation are analyzed. Finally, the problems which need to be solved are briefly described and the future research direction and trend are pointed out. This review is expected to promote the application and its in-depth research of ball milling technology on soil remediation.

Abstract:A simple mechanochemical (MC) method is used to treat petroleum-contaminated soil and prepare a heavy metal adsorbent in one step. XRD, Raman, FT-IR, VSM, BET, and XPS were used to characterize the adsorbent. After MC treatment, the dissolved total petroleum hydrocarbons of the adsorbent is less than 1 mg·L−1, and a porous structure and carbonization phenomenon are evident. The specific surface area and cumulative void volume increase, and the adsorption pore size decreases. On the surface of soil, the percentages of iron oxides, carbonates, CO, -C-O-H, -COOH, and π unsaturated bonds increase. The Langmuir model shows that the maximum adsorption capacity of Pb2+, Cu2+, Cd2+, and Zn2+ are 338.58, 51.61, 32.34, and 25.05 mg·g−1, respectively. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model fits the Pb adsorption process, indicating the domination of chemical adsorption. GC-MS shows that petroleum hydrocarbons are completely degraded. The Tessier continuous extraction result shows that heavy metals are bound to carbonate, iron manganese oxide, and organic matter. The MC treatment achieves deep cleanup and resource utilization of petroleum-contaminated soil through the formation of amorphous carbon, carbonates, and iron oxides on the surface of soil particles. The material is magnetic and can be recycled when used in wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Mechanochemical techniques have been garnering growing attention in remediation of contaminated soil. This paper summarizes the performance, mechanism, influential factors, and environmental impacts of mechanochemical remediation (MCR) for persistent organic pollutants (POPs) contaminated soil and heavy metal(loid) s (HMs) contaminated soil. Firstly, in contrast to other technologies, MCR can achieve desirable treatment of POPs, HMs, and co-contaminated soil, especially with high-concentration pollutants. Secondly, POPs undergo mineralization via interaction with mechanically activated substances, where aromatic and aliphatic pollutants in soil may go through varied degradation routes; inorganic pollutants can be firmly combined with soil particles by fragmentation and agglomeration induced by mechanical power, during which additives may enhance the combination but their contact with anionic metal(loid)s may be partially suppressed. Thirdly, the effect of MCR primarily hinges on types of milling systems, the accumulation of mechanical energy, and the use of reagents, which is basically regulated through operating parameters: rotation speed, ball-to-powder ratio, reagent-to-soil ratio, milling time, and soil treatment capacity; minerals like clay, metal oxides, and sand in soil itself are feasible reagents for remediation, and alien additives play a crucial role in synergist and detoxification; additionally, various physicochemical properties of soil might influence the mechanochemical effect to varying degrees, yet the key influential performance and mechanism remain unclear and require further investigation. Concerning the assessment of soil after treatment, attention needs to be paid to soil properties, toxicity of POPs' intermediates and leaching HMs, and long-term appraisement, particularly with the introduction of aggressive additives into the system. Finally, proposals for current issues and forthcoming advancements in this domain are enumerated in items. This review provides valuable insight into mechanochemical approaches for performing more effective and eco-friendly remediation on contaminated soil.

Abstract:In recent years, the destruction of (persistent) organic pollutants and the immobilization of heavy metals and radioactive nuclides in contaminated matrices by mechanochemical treatment have been proved. Several studies demonstrate a remarkable versatility of the high energy ball milling technology in the detoxification of contaminated soil, a primary issue that demand rapid and adequate solutions. In the present mini-review, scientific and technological aspects of polluted soil mechanochemical treatment are discussed. In addition, an economic feasibility study is performed, employing technical and cost data obtained by constructors. It corroborates the competitiveness of the mechanochemical treatment as potential cleaning technology.
Methane-associated Micro-Ecological Processes Crucially Improve the Self-Purification of Lindane-Polluted Paddy Soil.

Abstract:Reductive dechlorination, an efficient pathway for complete removal of organic chlorinated pollutants (OCPs), is commonly reported to be coupled to oxidation of methane (CH4) or methanogenesis in anaerobic environments. However, the relationship between dechlorination and CH4-associated bioprocesses is unclear. Based on the hypothesis that CH4 supplementation could facilitate OCP dechlorination, we investigated the role of CH4-associated bioprocesses in the self-purification of flooded lindane-spiked paddy soils. Four treatments were conducted for up to 28 days: sterilized soil (S), sterilized soil + CH4 (SC), non-sterilized soil (NS), and non-sterilized soil + CH4 (NSC). Results indicated that both sterilization and addition of CH4 promoted lindane degradation and CH4 emissions in the flooded paddy soils. In the NS treatment, lindane had the lowest degradation rate when CH4 emissions were barely detected; while in the SC treatment, lindane had the highest degradation rate when CH4 achieved its highest emissions from anaerobic soil. Also, sterilization led to microbial diversity loss and functional recession, but increased ferrous ion [Fe(II)] concentrations compared to non-sterilized soils. Methanogenic communities and mcrA gene recovered faster than the majority of microorganisms (e.g., Fe bacteria, Bdellovibrionaceae, Rhizobiaceae, Dehalogenimonas) or functional genes (e.g., Dhc, Geo, narG, nirS). Collectively, we assume the enhanced removal of lindane may partly be due to both abiotic dechlorination promoted by chemical Fe redox processes and methanogenesis-derived biotic dechlorination. Revealing the coupling between dechlorination and CH4-associated bioprocesses is helpful to resolve both pollution remediation and mitigation of CH4 emissions in anaerobic contaminated sites.

Abstract:This study explored a possible destruction of hexachlorobenzene (HCB) as example of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) as well as the dechlorination mechanism by directly using minerals in the soil, such as antigorite, talc and olivine. Compared with a stable quartz phase of SiO 2 , all three Mg silicate minerals demonstrated certain degrading capacity for HCB with different efficiency order as: antigorite > talc > olivine > SiO 2 at 2 h of milling time. Interestingly, olivine exhibited a better performance than antigorite at 4 h of milling time, giving destruction percentage of 92.7% over 89.0% even at high concentrated HCB up to 5% added. Raman and ESR characterizations of the ball milled sample with olivine indicated the formation of amorphous carbon and graphitic carbon, and the occurrence of free radicals was observed to play an important role in dechlorination and carbonization of HCB. The first identified effectiveness of directly using Mg silicate minerals, allowed no addition of active chemicals during the ball milling, therefore avoided the concern over extrinsic contaminations on the soil. Olivine was further utilized to deal with actual contaminated soil and showed unique advantages on application prospects.

Abstract:With the acceleration of urbanization, less land is available for the direct construction of infrastructure. The reuse of landfills can provide resources in this respect; however, this approach requires the simultaneous removal of heavy metal ions and the strengthening of foundation. In this study, Ningbo's landfill was selected as a field test site. The concentrations of five heavy metal elements (Cu, Zn, Pb, Cd, Cr) gradually decrease with depth. Fulvic acid can complex with heavy metal salts to form a stable soluble conjugate, which greatly improves the electric repair effect. The removal rate of heavy metals after electrokinetic remediation is approximately 25%-35%. The heavy metal removal effect of the F-2 test group was the best. The anode settlement of each group of experiments is approximately 12% larger than the cathode settlement.
Oxygen atmosphere enhances ball milling remediation of petroleum-contaminated soil and reuse as adsorptive/catalytic materials for wastewater treatment

Abstract:Ball milling is an environmentally friendly technology for the remediation of petroleum-contaminated soil (PCS), but the cleanup of organic pollutants requires a long time, and the post-remediation soil needs an economically viable disposal/reuse strategy due to its vast volume. The present paper develops a ball milling process under oxygen atmosphere to enhance PCS remediation and reuse the obtained carbonized soil (BCS-O) as wastewater treatment materials. The total petroleum hydrocarbon removal rates by ball milling under vacuum, air, and oxygen atmospheres are 39.83%, 55.21%, and 93.84%, respectively. The Langmuir and pseudo second-order models satisfactorily describe the adsorption capacity and behavior of BCS-O for transition metals. The Cu2+, Ni2+, and Mn2+ adsorbed onto BCS-O were mainly bound to metal carbonates and metal oxides. Furthermore, BCS-O can effectively activate persulfate (PDS) oxidation to degrade aniline, while BCS-O loaded with transition metal (BCS-O-Me) shows better activation efficiency and reusability. BCS-O and BCS-O-Me activated PDS oxidation systems are dominated by 1O2 oxidation and electron transfer. The main active sites are oxygen-containing functional groups, vacancy defects, and graphitized carbon. The oxygen-containing functional groups and vacancy defects primarily activate PDS to generate 1O2 and attack aniline. Graphitized carbon promotes aniline degradation by accelerating electron transfer. The paper develops an innovative strategy to simultaneously realize efficient remediation of PCS and sequential reuse of the post-remediation soil.
Mechanochemical destruction of DDTs with Fe-Zn bimetal in a high-energy planetary ball mill

Abstract:Mechanochemical destruction has been proposed as a promising, non-combustion technology for the disposal of toxic, halogenated, organic pollutants. In the study presented, additives including Fe, Zn, Fe-Zn bimetal, CaO and Fe2O3 were tested for their effectiveness to remove DDTs by MC. The results showed that Fe-Zn bimetal was the most efficient additive, with 98% of DDTs removed after 4h. The Fe-Zn mass ratio was optimized to avoid possible spontaneous combustion of the ground sample during subsample collection. Inorganic water-soluble chloride in the ground sample increased by 91% after 4h of grinding, which indicated dechlorination during destruction of DDTs. In addition, relationships were established between the rate constant and the rotation speed or the charge ratio. Discrete Element Method (DEM) modeling was used to simulate the motion of the grinding ball and calculate both total impact energy and normal impact energy. The latter expressed a stronger, linear correlation with the rate constant. Therefore, normal impact energy is proposed to be the main driving force in the MC destruction of DDTs.

Abstract:Due to the high biotoxicity and persistence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), the remediation of PAHs-contaminated soil becomes an intractable problem. Persulfate-based advanced oxidation processes are widely used to degrade PAHs in aquatic environment. However, they are not convenient for used in soil due to the heterogeneity and complexity of soil matrix. In this study, a green and convenient ball milling process is introduced to activate persulfate for the remediation of PAHs-contaminated soil. About 82.5% PAHs were removed with 10% wt. Na 2 S 2 O 8 (PS) addition and ball-milling for 2 h under 500 r/min. The degradation of PAHs is attributed to the attack of radicals (SO 4 · - and·OH) generated from the activation of PS by mechanochemistry. Moreover, stable Si-O bonds were disrupted during ball-milling process, and formed free electron on the surface of soil particles. This facilitates the electron transfer from oxidants to contaminants. The particle size, surface element composition, functional group, and thermogravimetric analysis confirmed the slight disturbance of ball-milling-assisted PS process on the physical and chemical properties of soil. Therefore, ball-milling assisted PS approach would be a promising technology for the remediation of PAHs-contaminated soil.

Abstract:Mechanochemical (MC) treatment combined with activated persulfate (PS) oxidation has been developed as an advanced oxidation process for the degradation of organic pollutants. Efforts toward the degradation of lindane, which is a widely used organochlorine pesticide, has attracted considerable attention. For the first time, this study investigated PS-assisted MC degradation of lindane in contaminated soil, and the degradation mechanism was identified. The results indicated that Fe was not suitable for the activation of PS for the treatment of contaminated soil, and NaOH performed better than CaO to assist PS in the mineralization of organic chemicals. With PS–NaOH as the reaction additive, lindane in soil can be completely destroyed after grinding for 4 h. Under optimum reaction conditions with mass ratios of PS:NaOH:lindane = 0.35:0.15:5, degradation was completed within 2 h and mineralization was completed within 4 h. Electron spin resonance tests confirmed the generation of ˙OH and SO4−˙, providing evidence that MC treatment with PS activated by NaOH could efficiently degrade lindane in contaminated soil. Finally, the degradation mechanism of lindane in contaminated soil by the NaOH–PS–MC treatment system was identified, and initiation pathways were proposed.

Abstract:Mechanochemical treatment by high energy ball milling is a promising technology to safely destroy organic pollutants in contaminated soil and allow its possible beneficial reuse. The present study investigates the mechanochemical activation of four major soil components, which induces generation of electrons on particle surfaces. Such phenomenon is demonstrated to occur on oxides by formation of trapped electrons in oxygen vacancies (following a zeroth-order kinetics), as well as on quartz and clayey materials to form fresh electron-rich surfaces by homolytic bond rapture (according to a first-order kinetics). Two toxic organophosphate biocides (i.e. chlorpyrifos and glyphosate) are used as model pollutants. Results show that the aromatic structure of chlorpyrifos determines a faster degradation rate, compared to the aliphatic one of glyphosate, because of the higher stability of generated radical intermediates. Moreover, the aromatic moiety facilitates adsorption on clays, thus temporarily sequestering the molecule and delaying its degradation. The many heteroatoms in both organophosphates have analogous fate: mineralization to inorganic form.
Degradation of endosulfan by high-energy ball milling with CaO: process and mechanism

Abstract:Mechanochemical degradation (MCD) technology has shown its remarkable potential in the disposal of persistent organochlorines in a non-combustion manner. In the present study, endosulfan, as the newly listed persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in the Stockholm Convention, was investigated for its feasibility of mechanochemical destruction using high-energy ball milling. Using calcium oxide (CaO) as a co-milling reagent, the degradation efficiency of endosulfan was nearly 100% after ball milling for 60 min, while the dechlorination efficiency and the sulfate formation efficiency were delayed for endosulfan degradation. After ball milling for 120 min, the dechlorination efficiency and sulfate formation efficiency reached 87.55% and 26.28%, respectively. Based on the measurement results from various material characterization approaches, the main degradation pathway of endosulfan was proposed as sequential dechlorination followed by the destruction of hydrocarbon skeleton. The GC-MS analysis confirmed that complete desulfurization and dechlorination had been realized finally. This study provides an option for the way toward the efficient and rapid destruction of endosulfan as a new POPs using mechanochemical technology.

Abstract:Petroleum-contaminated soil (PCS) requires an integrated treatment strategy for the simultaneous cleanup of pollutants and beneficial reuse of post-remediation soil. A combined process of ball milling and pyrolysis was used to treat PCS. The obtained carbonized soil (BRCS) was used to adsorb heavy metals and activate persulfate (PS) oxidation. The maximum adsorption capacity of BRCS for Pb 2+ reaches 983.7 mg/g. When the BRCS and PS dosage is 3 g/L and 2 g/L, respectively, the removal rate of aniline (100 mg/L) is close to 100 %. Ball milling pretreatment significantly improves the heavy metal adsorption property and persulfate activation performance of the pyrolytic carbonized soil. According to sequential extraction, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance , and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses, ball milling pretreatment considerably increases the adsorption capacities of carbonized soil for heavy metals by enhancing carbonate binding and Fe/Mn oxide complexation/coprecipitation. Quenching experiments show that the nonradical path dominates the persulfate oxidation process. Electron paramagnetic resonance and linear sweep voltammetry analyses show that ball milling pretreatment produces more surface-bound semiquinone radical, which greatly activates persulfate oxidation by accelerating direct electron transfer. This study proposes an integrated resource utilization strategy for carbonized soil by stimulation of endogenous functional components in carbonized soil and beneficial reuse of hazardous environmental permanent free radicals.
