Abstract:From three aspects of metal foil bridge electrical explosion, electrical explosion drive flyer and flyer shock initiation explosive, the research progress in the function mechanism of exploding foil initiators was reviewed. It is considered that the exploding foil initiators have made important progress in the sectional resistivity model, advanced flyer velocity measurement technology, calculation model of the electrical explosion drive flyer velocity based on the energy conversion coefficient and the sensitivity prediction based on the critical initiation criterion etc aspects. Some regular knowledges have been obtained and the low energy design is promoted to some extent. It is pointed out that the quantitative description of energy dissipation and flyer ablation, temporal shape of the flyer in the flight, non‑ideal detonation performance prediction at small scale and the micro reaction flow observation technology after the wave front will become the key points in the future research of exploding foil initiators in the electrical explosion drive flyer process under the small size condition.

Abstract:This paper addresses the problem of multi‐layer flyer impact‐induced initiation of a high‐energy explosive PBX‐1(based on 95 % TATB). The CREST reaction combustion model based on the time‐step difference method is embedded in LS‐DYNA, and the pressure history of PBX‐1 in multiple impact initiation is numerically simulated. The strengths and weaknesses of the two models are analyzed by comparing the simulation results of the pressure‐based IG model and the entropy‐based CREST model in multiple impact initiation. The results show that the CREST model is significantly better than the IG model in the problem of multiple impact initiation of PBX‐1, and it matches the experimental results better.

Abstract:A numerical model describing the ballistic behavior of a commercially used initiator is presented in this article. This model was built on the principle of conservation of mass and energy in the multi-phase framework incorporated with multi-loaded conditions. After obtaining the information about the grain size distribution in each composite, a fixing factor was proposed based on the surface area ratio of the composites. Thus, the solid propellant burning process based on distributed grain size was described, and the burn rate parameters of the applied pyrotechnic compositions were re-evaluated for different preconditioned temperature levels according to Vieille’s law. The influence of bridge wire and initiator metal cap was further modeled concerning their characteristic properties according to the observed measurements. The validation of the entire initiator model in the closed bomb test showed quantitative agreement with the measured pressure evolution, while the parameter study for evaluating the ballistic sensitivity of each component delivered some insights into the product development process. Furthermore, the configuration of a cold gas inflator was utilized to evaluate the initiator impact for a realistic application, where the shock wave intensity during deployment serves the main function in the inflator design. Incorporated with CFD simulations to capture the shock wave propagation, 0D-3D coupling strategy for initiator ballistics to inflator configuration was realized. Besides, the simulation results reflected the physical conditions in a proper manner. In particular, the parameter study led to a better understanding of interactions between inflator components, which were barely possible to be quantified through the measurements. The proposed initiator model could also be used in combination with other mechanical principles as a component of pyrotechnic devices such as pin-puller, electric line cutters, or airbag inflators. The detailed information gained in describing the physical properties enabled us to assess the existing design quantitatively and to have better control of the product quality.

Abstract:The responses of polyimide film hypervelocity impacted by aluminum micro–flyer are studied through numerical and analytical methods. By combining the conservation equations (mass, momentum and energy) with Rankine-Hugoniot and Mie-Grüneisen equations, a mathematical solution formula for flyer hypervelocity impact on film is obtained. This analytical model gives a function of impact conditions and material properties of flyer/film, and can be used to evaluate the velocities and energies of the flyer/debris cloud. A non–dimensional empirical equation for the penetration hole caused by the flyer is also established. Results of the theoretical calculation are in good agreement with the numerical simulation. Then, the double–films impacted by the micro flyer are investigated and two damage patterns on the rear film, namely central penetration hole and adjacent fracture zone, are identified. Finally, using the design of experiment technique and the response surface method, a predictive model for the damage range of these two patterns is proposed.

Abstract:Numerical simulation of the shock wave propagation process of explosives with different charge amounts is carried out with the nonlinear dynamics software AUTODYN, and the influence law of the shock wave generated by the explosion of different explosive equivalents on the deflection change of the target plate at different distances is explored, and the fitting formula for the deflection change of the target plate with different charge amounts at different burst distances is given. The fitting results of this paper can provide reference for the failure of the equivalent target plate.

Abstract:Shock wave focusing is considered a new type of initiation method that does not require external ignition devices. For this method, understanding the shock wave/flame interaction accurately is one of the critical issues for revealing the ignition and triggering mechanisms during shock wave focusing processes. In this study, numerical simulations were carried out to investigate the detailed flow field evolution of the focusing process with kerosene as fuel. Two detonation initiation modes were found during the shock wave focusing processes, which were the direct initiation mode and the reflected shock wave collision initiation mode, respectively. At the detonation wave propagation stage, the primary detonation wave decouples and fails to propagate out of the cavity. The multiple initiation phenomenon occurs in the cavity, and it dominated detonation waves to propagate outside of the cavity to accomplish one thermal cycle. There is no positive correlation between jet temperature and detonation wave propagation velocity. When the jet temperature is low, the detonation wave velocity dominated by the multiple initiation mode is the fastest. The analysis of the shock wave focusing process under different jet velocities showed that when the jet velocity was lower than 2 Ma, the decoupling of the primary detonation wave failed to induce multiple detonation waves. Driven by the vortex in the semicircular cavity, the flame is almost stationary, which means the failure of the detonation wave propagation process.

Abstract:Based on the character of near-half-cylindrical linear forming LEFP(linear explosive formed projectile),the characteristics of impacting initiation of LEFP on charge warhead with shell was studied.The dynamically intercepting impact test of LEFP formed by endpoint initiation way on shaped charge warhead with diameter of 82 mm was performed.The structure failure process of warhead was observed by a high-speed video camera.The numerical simulation model of LEFP shelled charge was established using ANSYS/LS-DYNA simulation software.Simulation analyses to intercept the process of impacting charge with shell under the conitions of forming process of LEFP,different blasting height and different initiation ways was performed.Results show that all the charge with shell measured are initiated.The average peak pressure of explosive by center line initiation is 1.17 times higher than that of explosive by endpoint initiation.LEFP has the possibility as damage element for an active defense system of armored vehicle or other air defense anti missile technology.

Abstract:In this theoretical study on an exploding foil initiator (EFI), the sequential events in an EFI system were numerically modeled and investigated from metallic bridge burst by ohmic heating and flyer acceleration by plasma expansion to explosive detonation by high-speed flyer impact. The EFI system modeling employed mass, momentum, and energy conservation coupled with the resistance–inductance–capacitance circuit equation of the initiation circuit and plasma property calculations of highly dense metallic plasma as well as a semi-empirical detonation model. The aim was to predict transient bridge behavior, flyer velocity, and detonation initiation threshold. Through comparisons and verifications with measured data from several existing EFI firing tests, the present system model was shown to predict bridge burst and flyer velocity very well. The numerical results indicated two different thresholds of charging voltage for flyer creation out of plastic film and impact detonation of explosive charge to be quite consistent with the measurements. The system behaviors in three different ranges of charging voltage were discussed in terms of discrete nature of this high-voltage explosive charge initiator.

Abstract:In order to study the impact initiation process and mechanism of hypervelocity PTFE/Al composite structure reactive fragments on a shielded charge, first, an existing PTFE/Al reactive fragment hypervelocity collision experiment was numerically simulated using the SPH algorithm in ANSYS/AUTODYN 17.0 software. Then, the Lee–Tarver model was verified to describe the detonation reaction behavior and explosion damage effect of reactive materials. A numerical simulation analysis of the impact of two kinds of ultra-high-speed PTFE/Al composite-structure reactive fragments on a shielded charge was carried out using the SPH algorithm. These were steel-coated PTFE/Al and steel-semi-coated PTFE/Al fragments, and they were compared with the impact of steel fragments. The results indicate that the threshold velocities of the impact initiation of the two composite-structure reactive fragments on the shielded charge were both 2.6 km/s, while the threshold velocity of the steel fragment was 2.7 km/s. Under the threshold velocity condition, the two composite-structure reactive fragments increase the time and intensity of the compressed shock wave pulse in the explosive due to the impact energy release effect of the reactive materials, causing the shielded charge to detonate under the continuous long-term pulse loads. However, the mechanism of the steel fragment on the shielded charge belongs to the shock–detonation transition. The research results can provide scientific references for the design of hypervelocity reactive fragments and the study of their damage mechanism.

Abstract:Miniaturized laser-initiated pyrotechnic devices have great application prospects in aerospace and modern weapon systems due to their excellent energy output performance and reliability. In order to develop a low-energy insensitive laser detonation technology based on a two-stage charge structure, it is important to deeply analyze the motion law of a titanium flyer plate driven by the deflagration of the first-stage charge (RDX). The effects of the charge mass of RDX, flyer plate mass, and barrel length on the motion law of flyer plates were studied through a numerical simulation method based on the Powder Burn deflagration model. The consistency between the numerical simulation and the experimental results was analyzed using the paired t confidence interval estimation method. The results show that the Powder Burn deflagration model can effectively describe the motion process of the RDX deflagration-driven flyer plate with a 90% confidence level, and its velocity error is ≤6.7%. The speed of the flyer plate is proportional to the mass of the RDX charge, inversely proportional to the mass of the flyer plate, and exponentially related to its moving distance. As the moving distance of the flyer plate increases, the RDX deflagration products and air in front of the flyer plate are compressed, which inhibits the motion of the flyer plate. In the optimum state (the mass of the RDX charge is 60 mg, the mass of the flyer is 85 mg, and the length of the barrel is 3 mm), the speed of the titanium flyer reaches 583 m/s, and the peak pressure of the RDX deflagration reaches 2182 MPa. This work will provide a theoretical basis for the refined design of a new generation of miniaturized high-performance laser-initiated pyrotechnic devices.

Abstract:The shock initiation/ignition of Cylindrical Charges Covered with thin Aluminium Shell (CCCAS) by steel fragment impact was experimentally and theoretically investigated. The critical specific kinetic energy criterion and threshold for the shock reaction of CCCAS were obtained. During the experiments, the response characteristics of CCCAS by steel fragment impact were studied. Then the surface microstructures of explosives were examined by scanning electron microscope (SEM). According to the ex-perimental phenomena and existing theories, a calculation model for critical criterion for the shock reaction of CCCAS was developed by dimensional analysis. Based on the calculation model and numerous tests of cylindrical charges covered with 3 mm aluminium shell under the impact of steel fragments with the mass from 1.0 g to 2.0 g, the critical specific kinetic energy threshold for the shock initiation of CCCAS was obtained.
Shock experiments and numerical simulations on low energy portable electrically exploding foil accelerators

Abstract:Two low energy (1.6 and 8 kJ) portable electrically exploding foil accelerators are developed for moderately high pressure shock studies at small laboratory scale. Projectile velocities up to 4.0 km/s have been measured on Kapton flyers of thickness 125 microm and diameter 8 mm, using an in-house developed Fabry-Perot velocimeter. An asymmetric tilt of typically few milliradians has been measured in flyers using fiber optic technique. High pressure impact experiments have been carried out on tantalum, and aluminum targets up to pressures of 27 and 18 GPa, respectively. Peak particle velocities at the target-glass interface as measured by Fabry-Perot velocimeter have been found in good agreement with the reported equation of state data. A one-dimensional hydrodynamic code based on realistic models of equation of state and electrical resistivity has been developed to numerically simulate the flyer velocity profiles. The developed numerical scheme is validated against experimental and simulation data reported in literature on such systems. Numerically computed flyer velocity profiles and final flyer velocities have been found in close agreement with the previously reported experimental results with a significant improvement over reported magnetohydrodynamic simulations. Numerical modeling of low energy systems reported here predicts flyer velocity profiles higher than experimental values, indicating possibility of further improvement to achieve higher shock pressures.

Abstract:In order to rule out reactive armor’s interference with main jet,increase the penetration ability of high explosive antitank projectile into explosive reactive armor,numerical simulations of teflon,nylon,plexiglas jet initiating B explosive with shell were carried out by AUTODYN?2D software. And penetration?but?not?detonation with high velocity of shelled B explosive was achieved,respectively. The results indicate that plexiglas shows better ductility and perfect forming state and its jet can penetrate shelled explosive without detonating at higher velocity. With the measurement criterion of initiating value u2d brought forward in the article,the initiating values u2d of these jets are almost same and about 12.5% higher than those put forward by Held.

Abstract:Exploding foil initiator (EFI)is a special kind of actuator that is used to drive the flyer. To realize high-velocity flyer output and low-energy firing, the size of bridge foil and corresponding structures of EFI were studied. Four kinds of micro-chip exploding foil initiators (McEFI) with different bridge foil sizes were prepared in batches using Micro-Electro-Mechanical System technology. Furthermore, the primary characteristics of the four kinds of bridge foils were comparatively performed and discussed, including the electro-thermal simulation, electrical-explosion properties, and flyer velocities capabilities. Most importantly, the velocities of the ParyleneC (PC) flyer were measured by photonic doppler velocimetry, indicating the PC flyer had better velocity capabilities with the reduction of the size of the bridge foil. The firing property of McEFI was validated by initiating HNS-IV pellets, and the critical threshold energy was determined as 0.22 μF/1095 V based on the sensitivity test. This structural change truly implements the popularization of the high-velocity flyer actuator or initiator.

Abstract:Numerical simulation was conducted to study launching equipment damage caused by open-delay of air-proof cover. The flow model of multiple constituents finite rate unsteady state chemical reaction was used in numerical simulation, and finite volume TVD scheme used in solving convection term of the equation group. The source term generated by chemical reaction was solved by four-order Runge-Kutta algorithm. Study result shows shock oscillation with initial shock wave would be caused by open delay of the cover, and this harmful flow structure would lead to serious damage to launch equipment.

Abstract:The mechanisms of crack initiation and propagation in polymer-bonded explosives (PBXs) are not clearly understood at present. In this study, the discrete element method is used to investigate the damage and failure behavior of PBX under quasi-static compressive and tensile loading. The real particle shapes and microstructure of the crystal are considered to establish the discrete element model. The results reveal that under quasi-static compressive loading process, tensile microcracks are predominant. Before the failure strain, microcracks are mainly distributed in the binder, and they tend to be more uniformly distributed at higher strain rates. During the quasi-static tensile loading, due to microcrack penetration, the propagation path of the principal crack is approximately perpendicular to the loading direction. The maximum contact force between the particles increases with the increase in the strain rate under the same loading condition, which tends to be uniformly distributed before the failure strain, while the contact force concentration phenomenon occurs after the failure strain due to damage. The simulation results show that the failure strain, compressive strength, damage path, and damage degree are all correlated with the strain rate. The predicted results are in good agreement with the previously reported experimental measurements and other numerical simulation results.

Abstract:The explosion products, such as shock waves, fragments and heat energy formed by explosion, act on the plate structure, which may cause structural damage, material failure and even phase transformation of material. In this paper, the damage mechanism and protective effect of near-field blast load on sandwich structure based on foam-nickel core material were studied. Firstly, the near-field explosion test was conducted to investigate the blast response of the foam-nickel sandwich structure subjected to blast shock from 8701 explosive at near-field position. The deformation characteristics and stress history of the sandwich structure on the acting location of blast load were carefully investigated via experimental methods. A finite element model of near-field explosion was established for effective numerical modelling of the dynamic behaviour of the sandwich structure using the explicit dynamics software ANSYS/LS-DYNA for more comprehensive investigations of the blast shock response of the sandwich structure. The finite element model is reasonable and validated by mesh independence verification and comparing the simulated response behaviour to that from the experimental results for the sandwich structure subjected to near-field blast load. On this basis, the damage mechanism and protection effect of the near-field explosion impact on foam-nickel cores with different density and porosity are simulated more systematically. The investigated results from the experiments and a series of numerical simulations show the large deformation effect due to the extensive energy absorption, which suggests that the sandwich structure based on foam-nickel core material may be expected to become a new choice of protective structure under near-field blast load.

Abstract:Laser-driven flyer technology not only has been widely applied in micro-scale material processing and dynamic high-pressure physics but also possesses obvious advantages in improving the instantaneity and safety of shock initiation. To investigate the launch and impact characteristics between different flyers, six types of typical laser-driven flyers were designed and prepared via magnetron sputtering. The photonic Doppler velocimetry (PDV) and a self-made polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) stress sensor were used to collect the velocities and impact stresses of flyers driven by ns-pulsed laser, so that the kinetic energy coupling efficiency and shock initiation property were able to be obtained. Comparisons of characteristics between different flyers were implemented. The effect of nanothermite formed between aluminum and copper oxide layers was verified. The kinetic energy coupling relationship with laser and factors that influenced impact stress of flyers were discussed as well. The results are of significance in optimizing the launch and impact characteristics of laser-driven flyers for practical application.

Abstract:The numerical simulation of a blast wave of a multilayer composite charge is investigated. A calculation model of the near-field explosion and far-field propagation of the shock wave of a composite charge is established using the AUTODYN finite element program. Results of the near-field and far-field calcula-tions of the shock wave respectively converge at cell sizes of 0.25-0.5 cm and 1-3 cm. The Euler--flux-corrected transport solver is found to be suitable for the far-field calculation after mapping. A numerical simulation is conducted to study the formation, propagation, and interaction of the shock wave of the composite charge for different initiation modes. It is found that the initiation mode obviously affects the shock-wave waveform and pressure distribution of the composite charge. Additionally, it is found that the area of the overpressure distribution is greatest for internal and external simultaneous initiation, and the peak pressure of the shock wave exponentially decays, fitting the calculation formula of the peak overpressure attenuation under different initiation modes, which is obtained and verified by experiment. The difference between numerical and experimental results is less than 10％, and the peak overpressure of both internal and external initiation is 56.12％higher than that of central single-point initiation.
