Abstract:In the three parts taking part in the residual chlorine consumption in water supply pipe net,the inner pipe wall corrosion is a part not to be neglected,except the consumption from the water bulk and the inner pipe wall bio-film,especially for the cast iron pipe.From the aspect of micro-electrochemistry reaction,the residual chlorine attenuation model responsible for the pipe wall corrosion was set up,and the results from the model fitted the reality well.

Abstract:The corrosion process of the ductile iron pipes with different cement mortar lining coverage (lined (100%), unlined (0%), 50%, and 90% lining coverage) in water containing chloride and sulfate were investigated. Electrochemical measurements, including the potentiodynamic polarization curves and electrochemical impedance spectra methods, were carried out to analyze the corrosion mechanisms. Results indicated that the maximum corrosion potential of ductile iron pipes decreased as the increment of ionic strength in a logarithm tendency, while the corrosion current density increased linearly with ionic strength. Additionally, the cement mortar lining coverage affects the inner ductile iron corrosion significantly. The corrosion rate of unlined ductile iron was about 2-5 times higher than that of lined ductile iron pipes. Different from the corrosion rate of lined ductile iron pipes, that of ductile iron pipes with minor defects (90% lining) was higher in the first 10 d, followed by a lower one. The cement mortar lining coverage with significant defects (50% of lining) showed poor protection ability on the iron surface. Moreover, a roughly linear correlation between average corrosion rate (mm a(-1)) and the relative proportion of bare ductile iron area was fitted.
Failure Prediction Model and Influence Parameter Analysis of Buried Cast Iron Water Mains

Abstract:To resolve the serious breakage and leakage problems for the cast iron water mains buried in the early years in the water-supply system, pipe stresses were firstly calculated based on the pipe soil interaction model, and the failure prediction model for the cast iron pipe was developed, based on the corrosion model, the residual strength evaluation method and the failure criterion. Monte Carlo (MC) simulations were used to perform the probabilistic analysis, and the influence parameters analysis was given. Results show that pipes in large diameters are often broken because of circumferential stresses, and pipes in small diameters are prone to fail due to longitudinal stresses. The influence on the failure probability is large due to soil bedding lost induced by the breakage or uneven settlement when the corrosion depth reaches a certain depth. The corrosion model parameters, unsupported bedding length, and the residual strength parameters have large influence on the distribution of the safety factors for the cast iron pipe. The corrosion is one of the most important factors leading to the pipe failure. Reducing corrosion pit depth growth by using corrosion control technique can be the most effective way to decelerate the breakage growth rate and prolong the service life.
Failure Prediction and Reliability Analysis of Buried Grey Cast Iron Water Mains Considering Corrosion

Abstract:To resolve the serious breakage and leakage problems for the grey cast iron water mains buried in the early years in the water-supply system, pipe stresses were firstly calculated based on the pipe soil inter-action model, and the corrosion depth was predicted by the corrosion model. Then, the residual strength associated with corrosion was evaluated, and a failure prediction model was given by using the failure crite-rion for the cast iron. Monte Carlo (MC) simulations were used to perform the probabilistic analysis. The given model fully considers the influences of corrosion, external loads and uncertainties on the pipe failure. Results show that the pipes will not be failed when only considering the external loads. The corrosion is one of the very important factors contributing to the pipe failure. The probability density distribution of the safety factor of the pipe appears a lognormal distribution. The hazard of the pipe failure is large in 20-50 years, and it becomes small after 80 years and decreases with the time. The influence on the failure probability is large for considering soil bedding lost induced by the breakage or uneven settlement when the corrosion depth reaches a certain depth.

Abstract:Since the period required for testing the atmospheric corrosion of steel is long, most studies have focused on the corrosion behavior in less than three years, making exploring long-term atmospheric corrosion particularly valuable. This study investigates the corrosion behaviors, corrosion models, and mechanical properties of Q235 welded steel pipes collapsing due to corrosion after 25-year service in an urban industrial atmospheric environment using SEM, XRD, electrochemical methods, 3-D noncontact surface profilometry, and static tensile testing. The typical morphologies of & alpha;-FeOOH, & gamma;-FeOOH, and Fe3O4 and the effect of the content of various corrosive materials on the corrosion rate of the steel pipes are identified and analyzed. Then, the influence of different corrosion degrees on the mechanical properties of the steel pipes is examined by considering the morphologies of the rust pits. The results show that the wetting-drying cycles affect the structures of the rust layers and their protective properties. The rust layers on the sheltered surface are thicker but less protective than those on the exposed surface. In the wet state, FeSO4 accelerates ion transfer, while Fe3O4 facilitates electron transfer. These processes collectively contribute to the corrosion of Q235 steel. Moreover, as the time-of-wetness of the rust layers on sheltered specimens increases, the corrosion rate of Q235 steel also accelerates. The corrosion model combines pitting and uniform corrosion and gradually changes from predominated by pitting to thickness as the corrosion degree increases. The corrosion morphology impacts the mechanical properties of the welded steel pipes, and the influences of the thickness loss and maximum rust pit depth on these properties are profound.

Abstract:Severely external corrosion has occurred on the ductile iron pipelines tube, which caused leakage and affected the drinking water supply of numerous people. The tube was made up of QT400 ductile iron with external and internal protective coatings. The service environment was the underground of a riverbed close to residential areas. In this study, this failure and its mechanism were studied through field investigations and laboratory experiments. The penetration rate of the localized corrosion is twice higher than that of uniform corrosion. It is perceived that DC stray current causes the localized corrosion, which results in smooth and black-deposits-covered morphology. Microorganisms, especially sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) in the soil plays an auxiliary role in the failure process. Additionally, the micro-galvanic corrosion between graphite and matrix promotes the failure. This study shows that an in-depth investigation on the stray-current corrosion in buried cast iron pipes is critical, although sacrificial anodes have been adopted.

Influence Factors of Initial Internal Corrosion of Grey Cast Iron Pipes in Water Distribution System

Abstract:Refer to the values specified in the Standards for Drinking Water Quality (GB 5749 - 2006), the influence of pH, DO, residual chlorine, temperature and NaCl concentration on the initial internal corrosion of the grey cast iron pipes were studied. The analyses on the corrosion mass, the corrosion rates and the sensitivity of the influence factors were carried out. The results showed that the corrosion mass and the corrosion rate increased with the increase of DO, residual chlorine, NaCl and temperature. A higher corrosion rate was observed in the acidic environment. During the corrosion process, pH demonstrated a pattern that firstly increased, then decreased, and finally remained constant. The decay of the corrosion rate was positively correlated to the decay of the residual chlorine and DO. The grey correlation analysis method was utilized to analyze the significance of various factors on the corrosion process, which in descending orders were DO ＞ temperature ＞ pH ＞ NaCl ＞ residual chlorine. The effect of dissolved oxygen on corrosion was greatest, followed by the temperature, and the influence of residual chlorine was the least.

Abstract:The long-term stagnation in metal water supply pipes, usually caused by intermittent consumption patterns, will cause significant iron release and water quality deterioration, especially at the terminus of pipelines. Another common phenomenon at the terminus of pipelines is leakage, which is considered helpful by allowing seepage of low-quality drinking water resulting from long-term stagnation. In this study, the effect of laminar flow on alleviating water quality deterioration under different leakage conditions was investigated, and the potential thresholds of the flow rate, which can affect the iron release process, were discussed. Based on a galvanized pipe and ductile cast iron pipe pilot platform, which was established at the terminus of pipelines, this research was carried out by setting a series of leakage rate gradients to analyze the influence of different leakage flow rates on iron release, as well as the relationship with chemical and biological parameters. The results showed that the water quality parameters were obviously influenced by the change in flow velocity. Water quality was gradually improved with an increase in flow velocity, but its change regularity reflected a diversity under different flow rates (p < 0.05). The iron release was remarkably correlated to the redox potential, dissolved oxygen, pH, iron-oxidized bacteria and sulfate-reducing bacteria. The cumulative total iron release (r = 0.587, p < 0.05) and total iron release rate (r = 0.71, p < 0.022) were significantly influenced by the changes in flow velocity. In short, they tended first to increase and then to decrease with an increasing flow velocity with the threshold as approximately 40% of the critical laminar flow velocity (1.16 × 10−3 m/s). For the pipes at the terminus of the drinking water distribution system, when the bulk water was at the critical laminar flow velocity, the concentration of total iron, the quantity and rate of total iron release remain relatively in an ideal and safe situation.

Abstract:Electro-migration (EM) treatment with injection of corrosion inhibitors is regarded as an efficient method to rehabilitate decayed reinforce concrete architectures and structures. In order to explore the advantages of different electrolytes used in this method, three reported nitrogenous electro-migrating inhibitors: guanidine, 1,6-hexamethylenediamine (HMDA) and 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APS) were selected and their effectiveness on reinforced cement mortar durability were compared. APS and HMDA can more efficiently prevent the external aggressive factors (water, chloride and carbonation) rather than guanidine, while guanidine shows advantage in recovering the mortar alkalinity after EM treatment. To select the appropriate electro-migrating corrosion inhibitors, not only the inhibitive effect, but also their effectiveness on removing chloride and re-alkalization and enhancing the resistance to external aggressive factors should be taken into account.

Abstract:The investigation of the filling-overflow behavior of corrosion products in concrete is important for accurately predicting corrosion-induced concrete cover cracking. This paper utilizes the ethylene diamine tetra acetic acid (EDTA) titration method to quantitatively study the iron content in each zone of corroded reinforced mortar specimens. Based on this, the proportion and distribution of corrosion products are analyzed. Results show that approximately 50% of the corrosion products are transported to the mortar and corrosion products show a transport pattern to the surrounding low-concentration area in mortar. The direction of ion invasion on the mortar specimen does not exhibit a significant impact on the transport of corrosion products, while both the geometric size and quality of the mortar specimen affect the transport of corrosion products. Furthermore, the proposed method employs EDTA titration to quantify the filling and overflow of corrosion products, providing a valuable approach for further experimental research.
Study on Iron Release with Various Blending of Desalinated Water and Tap Water

Abstract:This study examined effects of various blending ratio of desalinated water and tap water on iron release. Pipe rig tests were conducted to simulate and demonstrate iron release in response to water quality changes. Results show that compare to conventional treated water, desalinated water has a pronounced effect on the iron release in ductile iron pipe; increasing fractions of desalinated water in the blends result in higher total iron release. An increase in pH from 8.0 to 10.0 after 24 hours was found due to alkaline substances (like calcium oxide) releasing from the cement mortar lining and the poor buffering capacity of desalinated water.

Abstract:Cast iron pipes lined with cement mortar are widely used for water supply,due to its good corrosion resistance and chemical stability.However,pH and calcium ion concentrations may change significantly when high quality reclaimed water is conveyed using cast iron pipe lined with cement mortar (high quality reclaimed water is defined as the water with minimal amount of ions,treated by the reverse osmosis technology).Meanwhile,the erosion of the cement mortar poses a potential risk.In this study,a dynamic simulated water distribution model test-loop,which was 120 meters long and made of DN100 cast iron pipe lined with cement mortar,was built to investigate the impact of changes in the reclaimed water quality.The results showed that parameters of water quality such as pH,TDS,conductivity,calcium,sulfur,aluminum and silicon increased substantially after reclaimed water was conveyed in the system.However,iron and manganese were not detected.The changes in water quality were due to dissolving of calcium hydroxide and other hydrates in the cement.

Corrosion-induced Shear Performance Degradation of Reinforced Concrete Beams

Abstract:Chloride-induced corrosion of reinforcement has been recognized as one of the most predominant causes of structural degradation. In this paper, experimental and numerical investigation was conducted to study the degraded shear performance of reinforced concrete beam. The corrosion of reinforcements, crack patterns, and structural behaviors of corroded specimens with various corrosion levels accelerated by the impressed current method were analyzed. The test results indicated that the corrosion-induced crack patterns have a close relationship with the level of reinforcement corrosion. Moreover, an obvious degradation of shear performance of corroded RC beams in terms of initial stiffness, cracking loads, ultimate bearing capacity, post-peak behavior, and energy dissipation capacity was observed, which became more pronounced as the corrosion level increased. When a severe corrosion level (eta(a) >= 12%) was encountered, the failure mode could even be changed from the shear-compression failure into a much more brittle diagonal splitting failure. In parallel, to numerically simulate the propagation of the main diagonal crack faithfully, the extended finite element method (XFEM) specified with an exponential softening traction-separation relationship was adopted. Moreover, to investigate the effect of corrosion-induced bond degradation, a user-defined element (UEL) was also developed to represent the interfacial bond response. The reasonable agreement between the numerical simulation and experimental results proved the feasibility of the proposed approach. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
Effects of Disinfectant and Biofilm on the Corrosion of Cast Iron Pipes in a Reclaimed Water Distribution System

Abstract:The effects of disinfection and biofilm on the corrosion of cast iron pipe in a model reclaimed water distribution system were studied using annular reactors (ARs). The corrosion scales formed under different conditions were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), while the bacterial characteristics of biofilm on the surface were determined using several molecular methods. The corrosion scales from the ARs with chlorine included predominantly α-FeOOH and Fe2O3, while CaPO3(OH)·2H2O and α-FeOOH were the predominant phases after chloramines replaced chlorine. Studies of the consumption of chlorine and iron release indicated that the formation of dense oxide layers and biofilm inhibited iron corrosion, causing stable lower chlorine decay. It was verified that iron-oxidizing bacteria (IOB) such as Sediminibacterium sp., and iron-reducing bacteria (IRB) such as Shewanella sp., synergistically interacted with the corrosion product to prevent further corrosion. For the ARs without disinfection, α-FeOOH was the predominant phase at the primary stage, while CaCO3 and α-FeOOH were predominant with increasing time. The mixed corrosion-inducing bacteria, including the IRB Shewanella sp., the IOB Sediminibacterium sp., and the sulfur-oxidizing bacteria (SOB) Limnobacter thioxidans strain, promoted iron corrosion by synergistic interactions in the primary period, while anaerobic IRB became the predominant corrosion bacteria, preventing further corrosion via the formation of protective layers.
Corrosion Failure Analyses of 20 Steel Pipeline for Hydrogen Transportation in Swampland

Abstract:The corrosion assisted cracking of the pipeline for hydrogen transportation,which served in the swampland of Daqing region in the Northeastern China,was analyzed by means of chemical composition measurement,stereomicroscope,SEM and EDS.The synergetic action of mechanical scratches on the outside surface,the stress of the external environment and the corrosive environment may induce the initiation and then expansion of corrosion cracking on the pipeline.That is the reason which caused the corrosion failure of the pipe.In order to avoid the corrosion failure,the anti-corrosion technique should be improved,while the proper protective measures should be adopted for the safe operation of pipelines in that swampland environment.
Characterization of Corrosion Scale Formed on Stainless Steel Delivery Pipe for Reclaimed Water Treatment

Abstract:To reveal corrosion behavior of stainless steel delivery pipe used in reclaimed water treatment, this research focused on the morphological, mineralogical and chemical characteristics of stainless steel corrosion scale and corroded passive film. Corrosion scale and coupon samples were taken from a type 304 pipe delivering reclaimed water to a clear well in service for more than 12 years. Stainless steel corrosion scales and four representative pipe coupons were investigated using mineralogy and material science research methods. The results showed corrosion scale was predominantly composed of goethite, lepidocrocite, hematite, magnetite, ferrous oxide, siderite, chrome green and chromite, the same as that of corroded pipe coupons. Hence, corrosion scale can be identified as podiform chromite deposit. The loss of chromium in passive film is a critical phenomenon when stainless steel passive film is damaged by localized corrosion. This may provide key insights toward improving a better comprehension of the formation of stainless steel corrosion scale and the process of localized corrosion. The localized corrosion behavior of stainless steel is directly connected with reclaimed water quality parameters such as residual chlorine, DO, Cl(-) and SO4(2-). In particular, when a certain amount of residual chlorine in reclaimed water is present as an oxidant, ferric iron is the main chemical state of iron minerals.

Abstract:Steel pipelines, whether buried in the ground or exposed to the atmosphere, are susceptible to corrosion, which may impact their structural integrity. Pipeline failures can be catastrophic, especially for pipelines that transport hazardous materials. Maintenance actions, however, are often deferred following detection of localized corrosion due to operational requirements and financial constraints. Consequently, pipeline owners are often confronted with decisions as to whether a corroded pipe is still fit for service with an acceptable reliability or what is the remaining service life of the pipe before it poses a serious threat to public safety. The methodology presented in this paper to predict remaining service life of pressurized steel pipelines can be used to support decisions related to continued safe pipe operation and optimal pipe inspection intervals and maintenance schedules.

Abstract:X-ray microcomputed tomography (X-ray CT) technique was performed to monitor the whole corrosion cracking process of a cylinder reinforced concrete specimen non-destructively. Based on gray threshold separation and 3D reconstruction technology, the spatial distributions of each substance were obtained. Combined with Digital Volume Correlation (DVC) technique, the development of corrosion depth, generation and migration of corrosion products, variation of internal strain field and crack propagation during the corrosion process were all analyzed. The experiment results indicate that the electric current accelerated method can lead to a non-uniformity corrosion at the early age. The distribution fields of rusts and strain are affected by the micro- and meso- structure of concrete. A turning point of maximum principle strain along the cracking path can be identified as the critical point at which micro-cracks of concrete connect and propagate into macro-cracks. The statistical analysis reveals that the gray values of mortar matrix, corrosion products, steel bar and coarse aggregates in corroded concrete follow a Garrison distribution, while the pores do not.

This study investigated the impacts of water quality on iron release, dissolved oxygen consumption (ΔDO), corrosion scale evolution and bacterial community succession in cast iron pipes used for drinking water distribution at pilot scale, and proposed a source water switch strategy accordingly. Three sets of old cast iron pipe section (named BP, SP and GP) were excavated on site and assembled in a test base, which had historically transported blended water, surface water and groundwater, respectively. Results indicate that an increasing Cl- or SO42- concentration accelerated iron release, but alkalinity and calcium hardness exhibited an opposite tendency. Disinfectant shift from free chlorine to monochloramine slightly inhibited iron release, while the impact of peroxymonosulfate depended on the source water historically transported in the test pipes. The ΔDO was highly consistent with iron release in all three pipe systems. The mass ratio of magnetite to goethite in the corrosion scales of SP was higher than those of BP and GP and kept almost unchanged over the whole operation period. Siderite and calcite formation confirmed that an increasing alkalinity and hardness inhibited iron release. Iron-reducing bacteria decreased in the BP but increased in the SP and GP; meanwhile, sulfur-oxidizing, sulfate-reducing and iron oxidizing bacteria increased in all three pipe systems. To avoid the occurrence of "red water", a source water switch strategy was proposed based on the difference between local and foreign water qualities.
