Abstract:This study shows that metal matrix composites containing silicon carbide (SiC) produced from rice husks and disseminated in LM25 alloy can be a good alternative to traditional alloys because they provide better wear resistance, fatigue endurance and mechanical strength. Stir casting was used to create the AA LM25 and SiC composites, with SiC content varied at 1, 3 and 5 wt%. Depending on the SiC percentage, the solidified composites showed a range of microstructural and mechanical properties. SiC particles play a crucial role in refining grain size and improving mechanical properties. Microstructure research showed a trend from coarse grains in low SiC content composites to ultra-fine grains in high SiC content composites. Specimen B (10 vol.% SiC) demonstrated an ideal balance in mechanical testing, with a tensile strength of 564 MPa, an izod impact value of 23.5 J and a hardness of 175 Shore-D. With the addition of SiC, fatigue strength increased noticeably; specimen B performed best at 310 MPa. Superior wear and creep qualities were demonstrated by specimen C (15 vol.% SiC), which had the lowest specific wear rate of 0.0094 mm 3 /Nm in dry conditions and 0.0084 mm 3 /Nm in wet conditions. Specimen C demonstrated increased load-bearing capability in the creep test, with creep stresses of 0.17 at 2000s, 0.25 at 4000 s, 0.42 at 6000 s, 0.71 at 8000 s and 1.53 at 10,000 s. The SEM analysis revealed many features such as agglomerated particles, uniform dispersion of SiC particles, voids, porosity, ductile fracture and continuous crack propagation. These findings underscore the necessity of optimizing the SiC content to get the intended balance between strength, toughness and durability. The potential of LM25 composites with SiC reinforcement for a range of technical applications is highlighted by this work, offering an improved substitute for traditional alloys.
