Abstract:The symmetries of the DNA double helix require a new term in its linear response to stress: the coupling between twist and stretch. Recent experiments with torsionally-constrained single molecules give the first direct measurement of this new material parameter. We extract its value from a recent experiment. We also present a very simple microscopic theory predicting a value comparable to the one observed. Finally we sketch the effect of constrained twist on entropic elasticity of DNA arising from the connection between Link, Twist, and Writhe.

Abstract:The concept of the "twist angle" has garnered significant attention from researchers, due to its compelling association with the occurrence of intriguing physical phenomena in two-dimensional (2D) materials. In particular, since the discovery of unconventional superconductivity in twisted bilayer graphene (tBLG) in 2018, extensive theoretical and experimental research has been carried out on twisted 2D materials, including twisted TMDs, twisted BP, twisted hBN and so on, opening up a new field of twistonics. Although research on the condensed matter physics of twisted 2D materials has received considerable attention, controllable preparation of 2D materials, especially precise control over the twist angle, is still in its infancy. This review aims to summarize the cutting-edge advances in the fabrication of twisted 2D materials, providing a comprehensive understanding of this new field. First, several common strategies for producing tBLG are presented, and the advantages and disadvantages of each method are also elaborated. Then, the synthesis of tTMDs through one-step growth and two-step growth is described. Besides, other twisted 2D materials mainly in the theoretical stage are introduced. Furthermore, the potential formation mechanism of the twist angle is also briefly explained. Finally, the current challenges and future perspectives for controllable preparation of twisted 2D materials with the desired angles are outlined. We hope to bring some new insights and inspiration to those in the field of twisted 2D materials preparation.

Abstract:For the first time in history, humankind might conceivably begin to imagine itself as a multi-planetary species. This goal will entail technical innovation in a number of contexts, including that of healthcare. All life on Earth shares an evolution that is coupled to specific environmental conditions, including gravitational and magnetic fields. While the human body may be able to adjust to short term disruption of these fields during space flights, any long term settlement would have to take into consideration the effects that different fields will have on biological systems, within the space of one lifetime, but also across generations. Magnetic fields, for example, influence the growth of stem cells in regenerative processes. Circadian rhythms are profoundly influenced by magnetic fields, a fact that will likely have an effect on mental as well as physical health. Even the brain responds to small perturbations of this field. One possible mechanism for the effects of weak magnetic fields on biological systems has been suggested to be the radical pair mechanism. The radical pair mechanism originated in the context of spin chemistry to describe how magnetic fields influence the yields of chemical reactions. This mechanism was subsequently incorporated into the field of quantum biology. Quantum biology, most generally, is the study of whether non-trivial quantum effects play any meaningful role in biological systems. The radical pair mechanism has been used most consistently in this context to describe the avian compass. Recently, however, a number of studies have investigated other biological contexts in which the radical pair might play a role, from the action of anaesthetics and antidepressants, to microtubule development and the proper function of the circadian clock... Abstract:Since Newton, classical and quantum physics depend upon the ‘Newtonian paradigm’. The relevant variables of the system are identified. For example, we identify the position and momentum of classical particles. Laws of motion in differential form connecting the variables are formulated. An example is Newton’s three laws of motion. The boundary conditions creating the phase space of all possible values of the variables are defined. Then, given any initial condition, the differential equations of motion are integrated to yield an entailed trajectory in the prestated phase space. It is fundamental to the Newtonian paradigm that the set of possibilities that constitute the phase space is always definable and fixed ahead of time. This fails for the diachronic evolution of ever-new adaptations in any biosphere. Living cells achieve constraint closure and construct themselves. Thus, living cells, evolving via heritable variation and natural selection, adaptively construct new-in-the-universe possibilities. We can neither define nor deduce the evolving phase space: we can use no mathematics based on set theory to do so. We cannot write or solve differential equations for the diachronic evolution of ever-new adaptations in a biosphere. Evolving biospheres are outside the Newtonian paradigm. There can be no theory of everything that entails all that comes to exist. We face a third major transition in science beyond the Pythagorean dream that ‘all is number’ echoed by Newtonian physics. However, we begin to understand the emergent creativity of an evolving biosphere: emergence is not engineering.

Abstract:Weirdly enough, the term held a much smaller place in science until about 50 years ago. Scientists were well aware, of course, of nonlinear interactions, effects, equations and processes, but few people noticed their profound importance. The famous Fermi–Pasta–Ulam experiment in 1953 showed that nonlinearity threatened the legitimacy of fundamental assumptions in statistical mechanics — namely, the notion of ergodicity, or the idea that a system over time will visit all states equally, so that time averages can be replaced with easier-to-calculate ensemble averages. The rediscovery of the ubiquity of dynamical chaos from the 1960s onwards made nonlinearity a household word — at least in households populated by physicists, mathematicians, meteorologists or ecologists. But nonlinearity also has other meanings, as I noticed when absorbing the message of a recent paper on human ageing. The title is "Nonlinear dynamics of multi-omics profilesduring human aging" (X. Shen et al. Nat. Aging https://doi.org/10.1038/s43587-024-00692-2; 2024). But in what sense are these dynamics 'nonlinear'?
