Abstract:Physics engines, a quintessential product of computer science, have become indispensable tools in simulating physical phenomena through mathematical computations. Their prominence in game development, engineering simulations, and various physics applications is unquestionable. Ensuring their optimization is pivotal for meeting the rigorous demands of practical experiments. The significance of this study is twofold: theoretical foundations and practical necessities. From a theoretical standpoint, this paper delves into the core principles and architectural underpinnings of physics engines. We venture into the integration of multithreading and the application of niche algorithms within these engines. Further analysis illuminates how leveraging these technologies can drastically enhance the performance of a physics engine. In culmination, we propose a robust, feasible theoretical framework for physics engines, filling in the pivotal details. This exploration aims to galvanize and steer the evolution of physics engine design. Addressing practical necessities, our research emphasizes real-world applications of various physics engines. We examine tailored optimization strategies suited for specific needs and investigate methodologies to elevate the operational efficiency of specialized physics engines. This dimension of our study holds substantial real-world implications.

Abstract:Uncovering the mechanisms of physics is driving a new paradigm in artificial intelligence (AI) discovery. Today, physics has enabled us to understand the AI paradigm in a wide range of matter, energy, and space-time scales through data, knowledge, priors, and laws. At the same time, the AI paradigm also draws on and introduces the knowledge and laws of physics to promote its own development. Then this new paradigm of using physical science to inspire AI is the physical science of artificial intelligence (PhysicsScience4AI, PS4AI). Although AI has become the driving force for development in various fields, there is still a "black box" phenomenon that is difficult to explain in the field of AI deep learning. This article will briefly review the connection between relevant physics disciplines (classical mechanics, electromagnetism, statistical physics, quantum mechanics) and AI. It will focus on discussing the mechanisms of physics disciplines and how they inspire the AI deep learning paradigm, and briefly introduce some related work on how AI solves physics problems. PS4AI is a new research field. At the end of the article, we summarize the challenges facing the new physics-inspired AI paradigm and look forward to the next generation of artificial intelligence technology. This article aims to provide a brief review of research related to physics-inspired AI deep algorithms and to stimulate future research and exploration by elucidating recent advances in physics.

Abstract:'Intuitive physics' enables our pragmatic engagement with the physical world and forms a key component of 'common sense' aspects of thought. Current artificial intelligence systems pale in their understanding of intuitive physics, in comparison to even very young children. Here we address this gap between humans and machines by drawing on the field of developmental psychology. First, we introduce and open-source a machine-learning dataset designed to evaluate conceptual understanding of intuitive physics, adopting the violation-of-expectation (VoE) paradigm from developmental psychology. Second, we build a deep-learning system that learns intuitive physics directly from visual data, inspired by studies of visual cognition in children. We demonstrate that our model can learn a diverse set of physical concepts, which depends critically on object-level representations, consistent with findings from developmental psychology. We consider the implications of these results both for AI and for research on human cognition.

Abstract:I reflect on some of the basic aspects of present day Beyond the Standard Model particle physics, focusing mostly on the issues of naturalness, in particular on the so-called hierarchy problem. To all of us, physics as natural science emerged with Galileo and Newton, and led to centuries of unparalleled success in explaining and often predicting new phenomena of nature. I argue here that the long standing obsession with the hierarchy problem as a guiding principle for the future of our field has had the tragic consequence of deviating high energy physics from its origins as natural philosophy, and turning it into a philosophy of naturalness.

Abstract:Sora, OpenAI's latest text-to-video model, is particularly skilled at understanding the physical world, and all of the content it generates mostly consistent with the laws of physics. This indicates that Sora already has the beginnings of a world model and has the potential to become an excellent physics engine in the near future. This paper analyses and explains in detail the potential applications of Sora in physics engines and virtual reality. In addition, its advantages and disadvantages over traditional physics engines are compared based on its unique behavioural characteristics. Finally, it looks forward to the application of Sora in other fields.

Abstract:The nature of the existence, revealed through Human cognitive system, has been evolving since the development of the languages. Part of such revelations were the geometrical forms and the numbers, whose beauty and order, wondrous and mysterious, conveyed a sense of unreality beyond the physical reality normally discerned; to Plato they were indications of the other reality of which only those few glimpses had occurred. And full access for the earthlings required breaking out of their shackles of captivity; beautifully portrayed in the Masters cave allegory. The Present era sense of wonder of the effectiveness of the mathematics in the formulations of the discoveries of the fundamental and natural laws of existence, and the advances in computation, and especially in artificial intelligence (AI), have revived the platonic idea with some adherents among the very minds who contribute to furthering of our understanding of our physical universe. The work presented here is an attempt in proving that a physical world precludes the prospects for the mathematics to be its other reality. This end is achieved by bringing to light the processes involved in the discernment of the world by humans. The fundamentals involved make it clear that the events of the physical universe, are played out in our physical brains operational language of physics; and the symbolic language of mathematics is another machine language of our computational brains for the specific expressions of the underlying physics of some of the phenomena it processes. This rapidly developing language, presently much in appearances strange to the physical reality, and taken by many great minds; Plato, Galileo, Kant, Winger and the likes, as indication of an incontrovertible and mysteriousness mathematical world, is in fact inadvertently, blazing the trail for discoveries of more novelties of the physics of the physical universe.

Abstract:Abstract The wide application of virtual reality and augmented reality makes the engine of developing virtual reality develop towards more realistic rendering, more convenient operation and better performance. In the realization of virtual reality scene, the three-dimensional particle effects play an excellent performance, and enhance the immersion of the experiencer. However, the production and optimization of three-dimensional particle effects have always been a complicated task for developers. Based on the visual blueprint script of Unreal Engine 4 and the modular particle editor, the author elaborates the method of making particle effects in detail, calculates the cost of particle system in real time by using the console of Unreal Engine 4, and then analyses the reasons that affect the performance of particle effects according to the data. Three methods, GPU launcher, material instruction reduction and LOD application, are used to optimize the performance of particle effects, and data are used to show the results of optimization.

History and Philosophy of Physics

Abstract:This book represents a continuation, an elaboration, and possibly a clear explanation of the ideas which were expounded in the previous book Time and Methods in Environmental Interfaces Modeling (henceforth abbreviated as TM, Mihailovic et al 2016). In that book as well as in whole of our published scientific work we were either implicitly or explicitly driven by a need to understand how the space between the human mind and observed physical reality is bridged. Here we use synonymously the terms physical reality and reality since the reality is all of physical existence, and concepts related to it as opposed to those products of our mind which remain on the level of mind. Relying on that book we add our new experiences in research in which physics plays a dominant role. To these experiences we attached some epistemological features as well as a view of physics through the optics of Godel Incompleteness Theorems (Godel 1931). Innovative delivery methods committed to the interaction and collaboration of different specialist areas are utilised, which—in curriculum terms—encourages connections to be made between separate subjects to the benefit of both. Beyond enhancing the understanding of the nature of the microcosm, this approach aims to stimulate a 'creative curiosity' about the world.

Latent Intuitive Physics: Learning to Transfer Hidden Physics from A 3D Video

Abstract:We introduce latent intuitive physics, a transfer learning framework for physics simulation that can infer hidden properties of fluids from a single 3D video and simulate the observed fluid in novel scenes. Our key insight is to use latent features drawn from a learnable prior distribution conditioned on the underlying particle states to capture the invisible and complex physical properties. To achieve this, we train a parametrized prior learner given visual observations to approximate the visual posterior of inverse graphics, and both the particle states and the visual posterior are obtained from a learned neural renderer. The converged prior learner is embedded in our probabilistic physics engine, allowing us to perform novel simulations on unseen geometries, boundaries, and dynamics without knowledge of the true physical parameters. We validate our model in three ways: (i) novel scene simulation with the learned visual-world physics, (ii) future prediction of the observed fluid dynamics, and (iii) supervised particle simulation. Our model demonstrates strong performance in all three tasks.

Second Life Physics: Virtual, real, or surreal?

Abstract:Science teaching detached itself from reality and became restricted to the classrooms and textbooks with their overreliance on standardized and repetitive exercises, while students keep their own alternative conceptions. Papert, displeased with this inefficient learning process, championed physics microworlds, where students could experience a variety of laws of motion, from Aristotle to Newton and Einstein or even new laws invented by the students themselves. While often mistakenly seen as a game, Second Life (SL), the online 3-D virtual world hosted by Linden Lab, imposes essentially no rules on the residents beyond reasonable restrictions on improper behavior and the physical rules that guarantee its similitude to the real world. As a consequence, SL qualifies itself as an environment for personal discovery and exploration as proposed by constructivist theories. The physical laws are implemented through the well-known physics engine Havok, whose design aims to provide game-players a consistent, realistic environment. The Havok User Guide (2008) explicitly encourages developers to use several tricks to cheat the simulator in order to make games funnier or easier to play. As it is shown in this study, SL physics is unexpectedly neither the Newtonian idealized physics nor a real world physics virtualization, intentionally diverging from reality in such a way that it could be called hyper-real. As a matter of fact, if some of its features make objects behave more realistically than real ones, certain quantities like energy have a totally different meaning in SL as compared to physics. Far from considering it as a problem, however, the author argues that its hyper-reality may be a golden teaching opportunity, allowing surreal physics simulations and epistemologically rich classroom discussions around the what is a physical law? issue, in accordance with Papert's never-implemented proposal.

PhysDreamer: Physics-Based Interaction with 3D Objects via Video Generation

Abstract:Realistic object interactions are crucial for creating immersive virtual experiences, yet synthesizing realistic 3D object dynamics in response to novel interactions remains a significant challenge. Unlike unconditional or text-conditioned dynamics generation, action-conditioned dynamics requires perceiving the physical material properties of objects and grounding the 3D motion prediction on these properties, such as object stiffness. However, estimating physical material properties is an open problem due to the lack of material ground-truth data, as measuring these properties for real objects is highly difficult. We present PhysDreamer, a physics-based approach that endows static 3D objects with interactive dynamics by leveraging the object dynamics priors learned by video generation models. By distilling these priors, PhysDreamer enables the synthesis of realistic object responses to novel interactions, such as external forces or agent manipulations. We demonstrate our approach on diverse examples of elastic objects and evaluate the realism of the synthesized interactions through a user study. PhysDreamer takes a step towards more engaging and realistic virtual experiences by enabling static 3D objects to dynamically respond to interactive stimuli in a physically plausible manner. Beauty in artistic expressions through the eyes of networks and physics

Abstract:Beauty is subjective, and as such it, of course, cannot be defined in absolute terms. But we all know or feel when something is beautiful to us personally. And in such instances, methods of statistical physics and network science can be used to quantify and to better understand what it is that evokes that pleasant feeling, be it when reading a book or looking at a painting. Indeed, recent large-scale explorations of digital data have lifted the veil on many aspects of our artistic expressions that would remain forever hidden in smaller samples. From the determination of complexity and entropy of art paintings to the creation of the flavour network and the principles of food pairing, fascinating research at the interface of art, physics and network science abounds. We here review the existing literature, focusing in particular on culinary, visual, musical and literary arts. We also touch upon cultural history and culturomics, as well as on the connections between physics and the social sciences in general. The review shows that the synergies between these fields yield highly entertaining results that can often be enjoyed by layman and experts alike. In addition to its wider appeal, the reviewed research also has many applications, ranging from improved recommendation to the detection of plagiarism.
Deep Hidden Physics Models: Deep Learning of Nonlinear Partial Differential Equations

Abstract:A long-standing problem at the interface of artificial intelligence and applied mathematics is to devise an algorithm capable of achieving human level or even superhuman proficiency in transforming observed data into predictive mathematical models of the physical world. In the current era of abundance of data and advanced machine learning capabilities, the natural question arises: How can we automatically uncover the underlying laws of physics from high-dimensional data generated from experiments? In this work, we put forth a deep learning approach for discovering nonlinear partial differential equations from scattered and potentially noisy observations in space and time. Specifically, we approximate the unknown solution as well as the nonlinear dynamics by two deep neural networks. The first network acts as a prior on the unknown solution and essentially enables us to avoid numerical differentiations which are inherently ill-conditioned and unstable. The second network represents the nonlinear dynamics and helps us distill the mechanisms that govern the evolution of a given spatiotemporal data-set. We test the effectiveness of our approach for several benchmark problems spanning a number of scientific domains and demonstrate how the proposed framework can help us accurately learn the underlying dynamics and forecast future states of the system. In particular, we study the Burgers', Korteweg-de Vries (KdV), Kuramoto-Sivashinsky, nonlinear Schr\"{o}dinger, and Navier-Stokes equations.
