Abstract:The experimental characterization of quantum spin liquids poses significant challenges due to the absence of long-range magnetic order, even at absolute zero temperature. The identification of these states of matter often relies on the analysis of their excitations. In this paper, we propose a method for detecting the signatures of the fractionalized excitations in quantum spin liquids using a tunneling spectroscopy setup. Inspired by the recent development of the quantum twisting microscope, we consider a planar tunneling junction, in which a candidate quantum spin liquid material is placed between two graphene layers. By tuning the relative twist angle and voltage bias between the leads, we can extract the dynamical spin structure factor of the tunneling barrier with momentum and energy resolution. Our proposal presents a promising tool for experimentally characterizing quantum spin liquids in two-dimensional materials.

Abstract:Rationally and precisely controlling the structures of two-dimensional (2D) layered materials allows us to tune the electronic structures and quantum states of matter, discover new physical properties, thus enable new applications. For example, tuning the twist angles between 2D materials results in the formation of moiré patterns and the manipulation of electronic states, which have led to novel quantum phenomena, including unconventional superconductivity, moiré excitons, and tunable Mott insulators. We have shown how the phase, layer stacking and thus physical properties of 2D MX 2 materials can be influenced by screw dislocations. Moreover, we achieved systematic interlayer twisting of MX 2 spiral layers grown via by screw dislocations due to mismatched geometry between Euclidean crystal lattices and non-Euclidean (curved) surfaces ( Science 2020 , 370 , 442). We experimentally demonstrated the growth of twisted spirals of WS 2 and WSe 2 draped over nanoparticles near their centers and microscopic structural analysis confirmed the moiré superlattices between the atomic layers. Tuning the stacking and twisting of 2D materials opens up new dimensions of 2D quantum materials ( Acc. Mater. Res. 2022 , 3 , 369) for the study of moiré excitons, nonlinear optical properties, chiral optoelectronics, valleytronics and twistronics.

Abstract:In van der Waals heterostructures, electronic bands of two-dimensional (2D) materials, their nontrivial topology, and electron-electron interactions can be dramatically changed by a moire pattern induced by twist angles between different layers. Such process is referred to as twistronics, where the tuning of twist angle can be realized through mechanical manipulation of 2D materials. Here we demonstrate an experimental technique that can achieve in situ dynamical rotation and manipulation of 2D materials in van der Waals heterostructures. Using this technique we fabricated heterostructures where graphene is perfectly aligned with both top and bottom encapsulating layers of hexagonal boron nitride. Our technique enables twisted 2D material systems in one single stack with dynamically tunable optical, mechanical, and electronic properties.

Abstract:Twisted vdW quantum materials have emerged as a rapidly developing field of 2D semiconductors. These materials establish a new central research area and provide a promising platform for studying quantum phenomena and investigating the engineering of novel optoelectronic properties such as single-photon emission, non-linear optical response, magnon physics, and topological superconductivity. These captivating electronic and optical properties result from, and can be tailored by, the interlayer coupling using moiré patterns formed by vertically stacking atomic layers with controlled angle misorientation or lattice mismatch. Their outstanding properties and the high degree of tunability position them as compelling building blocks for both compact quantum-enabled devices and classical optoelectronics. This article offers a comprehensive review of recent advancements in the understanding and manipulation of twisted van der Waals structures and presents a survey of the state-of-the-art research on moiré superlattices, encompassing interdisciplinary interests. It delves into fundamental theories, synthesis and fabrication, and visualization techniques, and the wide range of novel physical phenomena exhibited by these structures, with a focus on their potential for practical device integration in applications ranging from quantum information to biosensors, and including classical optoelectronics such as modulators, light emitting diodes (LEDs), lasers, and photodetectors. It highlights the unique ability of moiré superlattices to connect multiple disciplines, covering chemistry, electronics, optics, photonics, magnetism, topological and quantum physics. This comprehensive review provides a valuable resource for researchers interested in moiré superlattices, shedding light on their fundamental characteristics and their potential for transformative applications in various fields.

Abstract:The concept of the "twist angle" has garnered significant attention from researchers, due to its compelling association with the occurrence of intriguing physical phenomena in two-dimensional (2D) materials. In particular, since the discovery of unconventional superconductivity in twisted bilayer graphene (tBLG) in 2018, extensive theoretical and experimental research has been carried out on twisted 2D materials, including twisted TMDs, twisted BP, twisted hBN and so on, opening up a new field of twistonics. Although research on the condensed matter physics of twisted 2D materials has received considerable attention, controllable preparation of 2D materials, especially precise control over the twist angle, is still in its infancy. This review aims to summarize the cutting-edge advances in the fabrication of twisted 2D materials, providing a comprehensive understanding of this new field. First, several common strategies for producing tBLG are presented, and the advantages and disadvantages of each method are also elaborated. Then, the synthesis of tTMDs through one-step growth and two-step growth is described. Besides, other twisted 2D materials mainly in the theoretical stage are introduced. Furthermore, the potential formation mechanism of the twist angle is also briefly explained. Finally, the current challenges and future perspectives for controllable preparation of twisted 2D materials with the desired angles are outlined. We hope to bring some new insights and inspiration to those in the field of twisted 2D materials preparation.

Abstract:The electronic band structure is an intrinsic property of solid-state materials that is intimately connected to the crystalline arrangement of atoms. Moiré crystals, which emerge in twisted stacks of atomic layers, feature a band structure that can be continuously tuned by changing the twist angle between adjacent layers. This class of artificial materials blends the discrete nature of the moiré superlattice with intrinsic symmetries of the constituent materials, providing a versatile platform for investigation of correlated phenomena whose origins are rooted in the geometry of the superlattice, from insulating states at "magic angles" to flat bands in quasicrystals. Here we present a route to mechanically tune the twist angle of individual atomic layers with a precision of a fraction of a degree inside a scanning probe microscope, which enables continuous control of the electronic band structure in-situ. Using nanostructured rotor devices, we achieve the collective rotation of a single layer of atoms with minimal deformation of the crystalline lattice. In twisted bilayer graphene, we demonstrate nanoscale control of the moiré superlattice period via external rotations, as revealed using piezoresponse force microscopy. We also extend this methodology to create twistable boron nitride devices, which could enable dynamic control of the domain structure of moiré ferroelectrics. This approach provides a route for real-time manipulation of moiré materials, allowing for systematic exploration of the phase diagrams at multiple twist angles in a single device.

Abstract:Spin-ordered states close to metal-insulator transitions are poorly understood theoretically and challenging to probe in experiments. Here, we propose that the quantum twisting microscope, which provides direct access to the energy-momentum resolved spectrum of single-particle and collective excitations, can be used as a novel tool to distinguish between different types of magnetic order. To this end, we calculate the single-particle spectral function and the dynamical spin-structure factor for both a ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic generalized Wigner crystal formed in fractionally filled moiré superlattices of transition metal dichalcogenide heterostructures. We demonstrate that magnetic order can be clearly identified in these response functions. Furthermore, we explore signatures of quantum phase transitions in the quantum twisting microscope response. We focus on the specific case of triangular moiré lattices at half filling, which have been proposed to host a topological phase transition between a chiral spin liquid and a 120 degree ordered state. Our work demonstrates the potential for quantum twisting microscopes to characterize quantum magnetism in moiré heterostructures.

Abstract:Moiré superlattices in twisted two-dimensional materials have emerged as ideal platforms for engineering quantum phenomena, which are highly sensitive to twist angles, including both the global value and the spatial inhomogeneity. However, only a few methods provide spatial-resolved information for characterizing local twist angle distribution. Here we directly visualize the variations of local twist angles and angle-dependent evolutions of the quantum states in twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) by scanning microwave impedance microscopy (sMIM). Spatially resolved sMIM measurements reveal a pronounced alteration in the local twist angle, approximately 0.3° over several micrometers in some cases. The variation occurs not only when crossing domain boundaries but also occasionally within individual domains. Additionally, the full-filling density of the flat band experiences a change of over 2 × 10 11 /cm 2 when crossing domain boundaries, aligning consistently with the twist angle inhomogeneity. Moreover, the correlated Chern insulators (ChIs) undergo variations in accordance with the twist angle, gradually weakening and eventually disappearing as the deviation from the magic angle increases. Our findings signify the crucial role of twist angles in shaping the distribution and existence of quantum states, establishing a foundational cornerstone for advancing the study of twisted two-dimensional materials.

Abstract:Twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) has the natural merits of tunable flat bands and localized states distributed as a triangular lattice. However, the application of this state remains obscure. By density functional theory (DFT) and pz orbital tight-binding model calculations, we investigate the tip-shaped electrostatic potential of top valence electrons of TBG at half filling. Adsorption energy scanning of molecules above the TBG reveals that this tip efficiently attracts molecules selectively to AA-stacked or AB-stacked regions. Tip shapes can be controlled by their underlying electronic structure, with electrons of low bandwidth exhibiting a more localized feature. Our results indicate that TBG tips offer applications in noninvasive and nonpolluting measurements in scanning probe microscopy and theoretical guidance for 2D material-based probes.
Double-twisted spectroscopy with delocalized atoms

Abstract:Interaction of atoms with twisted light is the subject of intense experimental and theoretical investigation. In almost all studies, the atom is viewed as a localized probe of the twisted light field. However, as argued in this paper, conceptually novel effects will arise if light-atom interaction is studied in the double-twisted regime with delocalized atoms, that is, either via twisted light absorption by atom vortex beam, or via two-twisted-photon spectroscopy of atoms in a non-vortex but delocalized state. Even for monochromatic twisted photons and for an infinitely narrow line, absorption will occur over a finite range of detuning. Inside this range, a rapidly varying absorption probability is predicted, revealing interference fringes induced by two distinct paths leading to the same final state. The number, location, height and contrast of these fringes can give additional information on the excitation process which would not be accessible in usual spectroscopic settings. Visibility of the predicted effects will be enhanced at the future Gamma factory thanks to the large momenta of ions.

Abstract:Twisted 2D material heterostructures provide an exciting platform for investigating new fundamental physical phenomena. Many of the most interesting behaviours emerge at small twist angles, where the materials reconstruct to form areas of perfectly stacked crystal separated by partial dislocations. However, understanding the properties of these systems is often impossible without correlative imaging of their local reconstructed domain architecture, which exhibits random variations due to disorder and contamination. Here we demonstrate a simple and widely accessible route to visualise domains in as-produced twisted transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) heterostructures using electron channelling contrast imaging (ECCI) in the scanning electron microscope (SEM). This non-destructive approach is compatible with conventional substrates and allows domains to be visualised even when sealed beneath an encapsulation layer. Complementary theoretical calculations reveal how a combination of elastic and inelastic scattering leads to contrast inversions at specified detector scattering angles and sample tilts. We demonstrate that optimal domain contrast is therefore achieved by maximising signal collection while avoiding contrast inversion conditions.

Abstract:Imaging twisty magnets Twisting monolayers of graphene with respect to each other has led to a number of unusual correlated states. This approach has inspired researchers to try their hand at twisting two-dimensional (2D) magnets, but such experiments have proven a difficult challenge. Song et al . made structures out of layers of the 2D magnet chromium triiodide with a small twist angle (see the Perspective by Lado). Using nitrogen vacancy centers in diamond as a magnetometer, the authors imaged the magnetic domains in both twisted monolayer and twisted trilayer structures. For twisted trilayers, a periodic pattern of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic domains was revealed. —JS

Theory of phonon spectroscopy with the quantum twisting microscope

Abstract:We develop a theory of probing phonon modes of van-der-Waals materials using the quantum twisting microscope. While elastic tunneling dominates the tunneling current at small twist angles, the momentum mismatch between the K-points of tip and sample at large twist angles can only be bridged by inelastic scattering. This allows for probing phonon dispersions along certain lines in reciprocal space by measuring the tunneling current as a function of twist angle and bias voltage. We illustrate this modality of the quantum twisting microscope by developing a systematic theory for graphene-graphene junctions. We show that beyond phonon dispersions, the tunneling current also encodes the strength of electron-phonon couplings. Extracting the coupling strengths for individual phonon modes requires careful consideration of various inelastic tunneling processes. These processes are associated with the intralayer and interlayer electron-phonon couplings and appear at different orders in a perturbative calculation of the tunneling current. We find that the dominant process depends on the particular phonon mode under consideration. Our results inform the quest to understand the origin of superconductivity in twisted bilayer graphene and provide a case study for quantum-twisting-microscope investigations of collective modes.

Opto-twistronic Hall effect in a three-dimensional spiral lattice

Abstract:Studies of moire systems have elucidated the exquisite effect of quantum geometry on the electronic bands and their properties, leading to the discovery of new correlated phases. However, most experimental studies have been confined to a few layers in the 2D limit. The extension of twistronics to its 3D limit, where the twist is extended into the third dimension between adjacent layers, remains underexplored due to the challenges in precisely stacking layers. Here, we focus on 3D twistronics on a platform of self-assembled spiral superlattice of multilayered WS2. Our findings reveal an opto-twistronic Hall effect in the spiral superlattice. This mesoscopic response is an experimental manifestation of the noncommutative geometry that arises when translational symmetry is replaced by a non-symmorphic screw operation. We also discover signatures of altered laws of optical excitation, manifested as an unconventional photon momentum-lattice interaction owing to moire of moire modulations in the 3D twistronic system. Crucially, our findings mark the initial identification of higher-order quantum geometrical tensors in light-matter interactions. This breakthrough opens new avenues for designing quantum materials-based optical lattices with large nonlinearities, paving the way for the development of advanced quantum nanophotonic devices.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) materials have received a lot of interest over the past decade. Especially van der Waals (vdW) 2D materials, such as transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs), and their heterostructures exhibit semiconducting properties that make them highly suitable for novel device applications. Controllable mixing and matching of the 2D materials with different properties and a precise control of the in-plane twist angle in these heterostructures are essential to achieve superior properties and need to be established through large-scale device fabrication. To gain fundamental insight into the control of these twist angles, 2D heterostructures of tungsten disulfide (WS2) and graphene grown by bottom-up synthesis via metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) are investigated using a scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM). Specifically, the combination of conventional high-resolution imaging with scanning nano beam diffraction (SNBD) using advanced 4D STEM techniques is used to analyze moiré structures. The latter technique is used to reveal the epitaxial alignment within the WS2/Gr heterostructure, showing a direct influence of the underlying graphene layers on the moiré formation in the subsequent WS2 layers. In particular, the importance of grain boundaries within the underlying WS2 and Gr layers for the formation of moiré patterns with rotation angles below 2° is discussed.

Abstract:Twisting the angle between van der Waals stacked 2D layers has recently sparked great interest as a new strategy to tune the physical properties of the materials. The twist angle and associated strain profiles govern the electrical and optical properties of the twisted 2D materials, but their detailed atomic structures remain elusive. Herein, using combined atomic-resolution electron microscopy and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we identified five unique types of moiré features in commensurately twisted transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) bilayers. These stacking variants are distinguishable only when the moiré wavelength is short. Periodic lattice strain is observed in various commensurately twisted TMD bilayers. Assisted by Zernike polynomial as a hierarchical active-learning framework, a hexagon-shaped strain soliton network has been atomically unveiled in nearly commensurate twisted TMD bilayers. A new twisting phase transition in layered materials

Abstract:Twisted two-dimensional (2D) layered materials exhibit many novel and unique phenomena, such as insulation and superconductivity transition, and superlubricity. However, the effect of twisting on these phenomena remains unclear. A key challenge is the lack of linkage between the twisting and the material properties. Here, twisting induced moiré pattern is directly correlated with the configuration entropy of the bilayer graphene, based on which a new twisting phase transition in layered materials is uncovered. Most critically, the twisting phase transition is found size dependent. The diversity of phase transition among the AB stacking and the twisted phases could provide insights into the twistronics and twistribology.

Twisted X-rays: incoming waveforms yielding discrete diffraction patterns for helical structures

Abstract:Conventional X-ray methods use incoming plane waves and result in discrete diffraction patterns when scattered at crystals. Here we find, by a systematic method, incoming waveforms which exhibit discrete diffraction patterns when scattered at helical structures. As examples we present simulated diffraction patterns of carbon nanotubes and tobacco mosaic virus. The new incoming waveforms, which we call twisted waves due to their geometric shape, are found theoretically as closed-form solutions to Maxwell's equations. The theory of the ensuing diffraction patterns is developed in detail. A twisted analogue of the Von Laue condition is seen to hold, with the peak locations encoding the symmetry and the helix parameters, and the peak intensities indicating the electronic structure in the unit cell. If suitable twisted X-ray sources can in the future be realized experimentally, it appears from our mathematical results that they will provide a powerful tool for directly determining the detailed atomic structure of numerous biomolecules and nanostructures with helical symmetries. This would eliminate the need to crystallize those structures or their subunits.

Abstract:Moiré superlattices—twisted van der Waals (vdW) structures with small angles—are attracting increasing attention in condensed matter physics, due to important phenomena revealed therein, including unconventional superconductivity, correlated insulating states, and ferromagnetism. Moiré superlattices are typically comprised of atomic layers of vdW materials where the exotic physics arises from quantum electronic coupling between adjacent atomic layers. The abundant phenomena revealed in moire electronics have motivated intensive studies on their photonic counterpart. In addition to vdW materials, twisted photonic systems can also be comprised of metamaterials, metasurfaces, and photonic crystals, mediated by interlayer electromagnetic coupling instead. The interplay between short-ranged interlayer quantum and long-ranged electromagnetic coupling in twisted structures is expected to yield rich phenomena in nano-optics. This study reviews recent progress in twisted structures for nanophotonics and outlook for emerging topics, opportunities, fundamental challenges, and potential applications.
