Abstract:I reflect on some of the basic aspects of present day Beyond the Standard Model particle physics, focusing mostly on the issues of naturalness, in particular on the so-called hierarchy problem. To all of us, physics as natural science emerged with Galileo and Newton, and led to centuries of unparalleled success in explaining and often predicting new phenomena of nature. I argue here that the long standing obsession with the hierarchy problem as a guiding principle for the future of our field has had the tragic consequence of deviating high energy physics from its origins as natural philosophy, and turning it into a philosophy of naturalness.

Abstract:If the results of the first LHC run are not betraying us, many decades of particle physics are culminating in a complete and consistent theory for all nongravitational physics: the standard model. But despite this monumental achievement there is a clear sense of disappointment: many questions remain unanswered. Remarkably, most unanswered questions could just be environmental, and disturbingly to some the existence of life may depend on that environment. Meanwhile there has been increasing evidence that the seemingly ideal candidate for answering these questions, string theory, gives an answer few people initially expected: a large “landscape” of possibilities that can be realized in a multiverse and populated by eternal inflation. At the interface of “bottom-up” and “top-down” physics, a discussion of anthropic arguments becomes unavoidable. Developments in this area are reviewed, focusing especially on the last decade.

Deriving Ontological Statements from the Unnatural Higgs Mass

Abstract:We provide novel, metatheoretical arguments strengthening the position that the naturalness problem of the light Higgs mass is a pseudo-problem: No physics beyond the standard model of particle physics is needed to explain the small value of the Higgs boson. By evaluating previous successes of the guiding principle of technical naturalness, we restrict its applicability to non-fundamental phenomena in the realm of provisional theories within limited energy scales. In view of further breaches of autonomy of scales in apparently fundamental phenomena outside particle physics, the hierarchy problem of the Higgs mass is instead reinterpreted as an indication of the ontologically fundamental status of the Higgs boson. Applying the concept of Selective Realism justifies this seemingly contradictory attribution within the effective theories of the standard model of particle physics. Moreover, we argue that the ongoing naturalness debate about the Higgs mass is partly based on the adherence to the methodology of effective theories (often claimed to be universally applicable), for which there is no justification when dealing with presumably fundamental phenomena such as the Higgs mechanism, even if it is embedded into an effective theory.

Anthropic considerations in nuclear physics

Abstract:In this short review, I discuss the sensitivity of the generation of the light and the life-relevant elements like carbon and oxygen under changes of the parameters of the Standard Model pertinent to nuclear physics. Chiral effective field theory allows for a systematic and precise description of the forces between two, three, and four nucleons. In this framework, variations under the light quark masses and the electromagnetic fine structure constant can also be consistently calculated. Combining chiral nuclear effective field theory with Monte Carlo simulations allows to further calculate the properties of nuclei, in particular of the Hoyle state in carbon, that plays a crucial role in the generation of the life-relevant elements in hot, old stars. The dependence of the triple-alpha process on the fundamental constants of Nature is calculated and some implications for our anthropic view of the Universe are discussed.

The weak anthropic principle and the landscape of string theory

Abstract:We note that there is an exception to the general arguments that no falsifiable predictions can be made, on the basis of of presently available data, by applying the weak anthropic principle (WAP) to the landscape of string theory. If there are infinitely more vacua in the landscape for one sign of a parameter than the other, within an anthropicaly allowed range, then under very weak assumptions about the probability measure one gets a firm prediction favoring that sign of that parameter. It is interesting to note that while the understanding of the string landscape is evolving, present evidence on the nature of the landscape allows such an argument to be made, leading to the conclusion that the WAP favors a negative value for the cosmological constant, $\Lambda$, in contradiction to the result of astronomical observations. The viability of applying the WAP to string theory then requires that either there are found an infinite discretum of anthropically allowed vacua for $\Lambda >0$, or the recently found infinite discretum of solutions for $\Lambda <0$ be reduced to a finite value.

Abstract:Following the selection metaphor as introduced by Lee Smolin in his 1997 book with respect to a possible model of the reproduction of Universes, this model is being reconstructed utilizing the strict analogical form of the metaphor chosen. It is asked then for the genotypal level associated with the primarily phenotypal model, and it is asked in particular where the information processing mechanism of that cosmological sort of selection could actually be found. It is argued that massive black holes in the centres of galaxies may play this important role. Some consequences on black holes in general are discussed then pointing to the necessity to actually revisit the concepts of virtual and actual black holes also.

Abstract:I aim to clarify the physical content and significance of naturalness. Physicists' earliest understanding of naturalness, as an autonomy of scales (AoS) requirement provides the most cogent definition of naturalness and I will assert that i) this provides a uniform notion which undergirds a myriad prominent naturalness conditions, ii) this is a reasonable criterion to impose on EFTs and iii) the successes and violations of naturalness are best understood when adhering to this notion of naturalness. I argue that this principle is neither an aesthetic nor a sociologically-influenced principle. I contend that naturalness may only be plausibly argued to be an aesthetic/sociological principle when formal measures of naturalness and their use in physics communities are conflated with the central dogma of naturalness - the former may indeed be argued to be sociologically-influenced and somewhat arbitrary - but these formal measures of naturalness are in fact less successful than AoS naturalness. I put forward arguments as to why AoS naturalness is well-defined and why it was reasonable for physicists to endorse this naturalness principle on both theoretical and empirical grounds. Up to date, no compelling reasons have appeared as to why the laws of nature should generically decoupling into quasi-autonomous physical domains. A decoupling of scales in the quantum realm is often claimed to be entailed by the Decoupling Theorem (Cao and Schweber (1993)), yet I will show that this theorem is too weak to underwrite quasi-autonomous physical domains in quantum field theories because one should additionally impose that parameters be natural. Violations of naturalness would then have ontological import - unnatural parameters would not be accurately described by EFTs but rather by field theories exhibiting some kind of UV/IR interplay.

Abstract:A well-known topic within the philosophy of physics is the problem of fine-tuning: the fact that the universal constants seem to take non-arbitrary values in order for live to thrive in our Universe. In this paper we will talk about this problem in general, giving some examples from physics. We will review some solutions like the design argument, logical probability, cosmological natural selection, etc. Moreover, we will also discuss why it's dangerous to uphold the Principle of Naturalness as a scientific principle. After going through this paper, the reader should have a general idea what this problem exactly entails whenever it is mentioned in other sources and we recommend the reader to think critically about these concepts.

Abstract:In the first part of the paper, I give a low-resolution overview of the current state of particle physics - the triumph of the Standard Model and its discontents. I review and re-endorse the remarkably direct and (to me) compelling argument that existing data, properly interpreted, point toward a unified theory of fundamental particle interactions and toward low-energy supersymmetry as the near-term future of high energy physics as a natural science. I then attempt, as requested, some more "visionary" - i.e. even lower resolution - comments about the farther future. In that spirit, I emphasize the continuing importance of condensed matter physics as a source of inspiration and potential application, in particular for expansion of symmetry concepts, and of cosmology as a source of problems, applications, and perhaps ultimately limitations.
On practical naturalness and its implications for weak scale supersymmetry

Abstract:We revisit the various measures of naturalness for models of weak scale supersymmetry including 1. electroweak (EW) naturalness, 2. naturalness via sensitivity to high scale parameters (EENZ/BG), 3. sensitivity of Higgs soft term due to high scale (HS) radiative corrections and 4. stringy naturalness (SN) from the landscape. The EW measure is most conservative and seems unavoidable; it is also model independent in that its value is fixed only by the weak scale spectra which ensues, no matter which model is used to generate it. The EENZ/BG measure is ambiguous depending on which ``parameters of ignorance'' one includes in the low energy effective field theory (LE-EFT). For models with calculable soft breaking terms, then the EENZ/BG measure reduces to the tree-level EW measure. The HS measure began life as a figurative expression and probably shouldn't be taken more seriously than that. SN is closely related to EW naturalness via the atomic principle, although it is also sensitive to the distribution of soft terms on the landscape. If the landscape favors large soft terms, as in a power law distribution, then it favors m(h) ~ 125 GeV along with sparticles beyond present LHC reach. In this context, SN appears as a probability measure where more natural models are expected to be more prevalent on the landscape than finetuned models. We evaluate by how much the different measures vary against one another with an eye to determining by how much they may overestimate finetuning; we find overestimates can range up to a factor of over 1000. In contrast to much of the literature, we expect the string landscape to favor EW natural SUSY models over finetuned models so that the landscape is not an alternative to naturalness.

Implications of the Reduction Principle for Cosmological Natural Selection

Abstract:Smolin (1992) proposed that the fine-tuning problem for parameters of the Standard Model might be accounted for by a Darwinian process of universe reproduction - Cosmological Natural Selection (CNS) - in which black holes give rise to offspring universes with slightly altered parameters. The laws for variation and inheritance of the parameters are also subject to CNS if variation in transmission laws occurs. This is the strategy introduced by Nei (1967) to understand genetic transmission, through the evolutionary theory of modifier genes, whose methodology is adopted here. When mechanisms of variation themselves vary, they are subject to Feldman's (1972) evolutionary Reduction Principle that selection favors greater faithfulness of replication. A theorem of Karlin (1982) allows one to generalize this principle beyond biological genetics to the unknown inheritance laws that would operate in CNS. The reduction principle for CNS is illustrated with a general multitype branching process model of universe creation containing competing inheritance laws. The most faithful inheritance law dominates the ensemble of universes. The Reduction Principle thus provides a mechanism to account for high fidelity of inheritance between universes. Moreover, it reveals that natural selection in the presence of variation in inheritance mechanisms has two distinct objects: maximization of both fitness and faithful inheritance. Tradeoffs between fitness and faithfulness open the possibility that evolved fundamental parameters are compromises, and not local optima to maximize universe production, in which case their local non-optimality may point to their involvement in the universe inheritance mechanisms.

A cosmological case study of a tower of warm dark matter states: $N$naturalness

Abstract:In this work, we study the cosmological effects of a tower of warm dark matter states on the cosmic microwave background (CMB) and on large-scale structure (LSS). For concreteness, we consider the $N$naturalness model, which is a proposed mechanism to solve the Higgs hierarchy problem. In this framework, the sector of particles of the Standard Model is copied $N$ times where the Higgs mass-squared value is the only parameter that changes between sectors. The other sectors are similar to our own, except their particles are proportionally heavier and cooler compared to the Standard Model sector. Since each sector is extremely weakly coupled to other sectors, direct observations of the new particles are not expected. The addition of new photon-like species and new neutrino-like species, however, can be detected through the CMB and in LSS data. These additional neutrinos form a tower of states with increasing mass and decreasing temperature compared to the SM neutrinos. This tower causes a more gradual suppression of the matter power spectrum across different comoving wavenumbers than a single warm dark matter state would. We quantitatively explore these effects in the $N$naturalness model and compute the parameter space allowed by the Planck 2018, weak lensing, and Lyman-$\alpha$ datasets. Depending on the underlying parameters, Planck 2018 and weak lensing data can require $N$naturalness to be tuned at the $10\%$ level for Dirac neutrinos and at the $5\%$ level for Majorana neutrinos. The additional neutrino states are crucial in constraining the model, particularly through their suppression of the power spectrum at small scales. The inclusion of many warm dark matter species is computationally very challenging and we make detailed assessments of our approximations and comment on potential future improvements.

Abstract:We study the prospects for probing the Nnaturalness solution to the electroweak hierarchy problem with future gravitational wave observatories. Nnaturalness, in its simplest incarnation, predicts N copies of the Standard Model with varying Higgs mass parameters. We show that in certain parameter regions the scalar reheaton transfers a substantial energy density to the sector with the smallest positive Higgs squared mass while remaining consistent with bounds on additional effective relativistic species. In this sector, all six quarks are much lighter than the corresponding QCD confinement scale, allowing for the possibility of a first-order chiral symmetry-breaking phase transition and an associated stochastic gravitational wave signal. We consider several scenarios characterizing the strongly-coupled phase transition dynamics and estimate the gravitational wave spectrum for each. Pulsar timing arrays (SKA), spaced-based interferometers (BBO, Ultimate-DECIGO, μ Ares, asteroid ranging), and astrometric measurements (THEIA) all have the potential to explore new regions of Nnaturalness parameter space, complementing probes from next generation cosmic microwave background radiation experiments.

Lectures on Naturalness, String Landscape and Multiverse

Abstract:The cosmological constant and electroweak hierarchy problem have been a great inspiration for research. Nevertheless, the resolution of these two naturalness problems remains mysterious from the perspective of a low-energy effective field theorist. The string theory landscape and a possible string-based multiverse offer partial answers, but they are also controversial for both technical and conceptual reasons. The present lecture notes, suitable for a one-semester course or for self-study, attempt to provide a technical introduction to these subjects. They are aimed at graduate students and researchers with a solid background in quantum field theory and general relativity who would like to understand the string landscape and its relation to hierarchy problems and naturalness at a reasonably technical level. Necessary basics of string theory are introduced as part of the course. This text will also benefit graduate students who are in the process of studying string theory at a deeper level. In this case, the present notes may serve as additional reading beyond a formal string theory course.

Anthropic Selection for a Low-Entropy Past

Abstract:The definition of thermodynamic entropy is dependent on one's assignment of physical microstates to observed macrostates. As a result, low entropy in the distant past could be equivalently explained by selection of a particular observer. In this paper, I make the case that because we observe a low-entropy past everywhere even as we look further and further away, anthropic selection over observers does not explain the non-equilibrium state of the observed cosmos. Under a uniform prior over possible world states, the probability of a non-equilibrium past, given our local observations, decreases to zero as the size of the world tends toward infinity. This claim is not dependent on choice of observer, unless the amount of information used to encode the observer's coarse-graining perception function scales linearly with the size of the world. As a result, for anthropic selection to choose a world like the one we live in, the initial state of a universe with size $N$ must be low-information, having Kolmogorov complexity that does not scale with $N$.

Abstract:The argument from naturalness is widely employed in contemporary quantum field theory. Essentially a formalized aesthetic criterion, it received a meaning in the debate on the Higgs mechanism, which goes beyond aesthetics. We follow the history of technical definitions of fine tuning at the scale of electroweak symmetry breaking. It is argued that they give rise to a special interpretation of probability, which we call Gedankenfrequency. By extension of its original meaning, the argument from naturalness is used to compare different models beyond the Standard Model. We show that in this case naturalness cannot be defined objectively. Rather, it functions as socio-historical heuristics in particle physics and it contributes to the advent of a probabilistic version of Popper's falsificationism.

Abstract:A novel approach to understanding the hierarchy problem is presented making use of topological aspects of the renormalisation group and the ER-EPR interpretation of entanglement. A common discussion of the renormalisation group, the black hole horizon and the expected entanglement between outgoing Hawking radiation and the interior, the cosmic censorship mechanism and the cosmological constant problem is envisaged.
