Abstract:We demonstrated a high output power distributed-Bragg-reflector (DBR) laser integrated with semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) for the frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) light detection and ranging (LiDAR) system. In order to acquire higher output power, different from the conventional SG-DBR laser, the front mirror in this work is a section of uniform grating to get higher transmissivity. Therefore, the output power of the laser reaches 96 mW when the gain current and SOA current are 200 mA and 400 mA, respectively. Besides, we fabricated a spot size converter (SSC) at the laser output port to enhance the fiber coupling efficiency, which reached 64% coupled into the lensed fiber whose beam waist diameter is 2.5 μm. A tuning range of 2.8 nm with free spectral range (FSR) of 0.29 nm and narrow Lorentzian linewidth of 313 kHz is achieved. To realize distance and velocity measurement, we use the iterative learning pre-distortion method to linearize the frequency sweep, which is an important part of the FMCW LiDAR technology.

Abstract:Narrow linewidth and fast-chirped frequency are essential in frequency-modulated continuous-wave lasers. We introduce a laser that meets these requirements by coupling a distributed feedback laser with an external high-Q microring resonator, where a bulky stacked piezoelectric chip is attached to the resonator for fast tuning. The laser demonstrates an ultranarrow intrinsic linewidth of 22 Hz in the self-injection-locked state. Actuated by the bulky piezoelectric chip, the maximum triangular actuation bandwidth can reach 100 kHz. The driving voltage is filtered to avoid a resonant mechanical mode, obtaining the minimum residual linearity error at 10 kHz with a 4.2 GHz tuning range. A light detection and ranging system was set up for a proof-of-concept experiment, demonstrating a high detection precision with standard deviations of 2.7 and 4.0 cm for targets at 15 and 30 m, respectively.

Abstract:We demonstrate a fully solid-state beam scanner that incorporates a Si3N4 photonic integrated switch array, a collimator lens, and a lithographically patterned diffraction grating. The off-chip components enable nearly circular output beams under the reduced system complexity. By manipulating the optical switch array and tuning the input wavelength, two-dimensional beam steering with $32\times23$ = 736 resolvable spots across a $14.3^{\circ }\times 9.9^{\circ }$ field of view (FOV) is realized. Furthermore, the coherent ranging within 18 m is demonstrated experimentally by utilizing the triangular frequency modulation. The tested results validate the feasibility of the proposed beam scanner, which might offer a flexible, scalable, and easily-implemented solution for the solid-state frequency modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) LiDAR.

Abstract:A 1560 nm high-power linearly-polarized all-fiber single-frequency narrow-linewidth laser with near diffraction-limited beam quality is demonstrated. The Yb–Er energy transfer efficiency and the ability of the signal laser to capture pump light have been improved by specifically choosing the pumping wavelength and the input signal power in the final power amplifier stage of this laser system. Under the off-peak absorption pumping wavelength of 940 nm, along with the maximum input signal power of 6 W, a maximum output power of 102 W with a slope efficiency of 40.5% is acquired. At the highest output power status, a polarization extinction ratio (PER) of 15.5 dB, a linewidth of 3.05 kHz, and a beam quality of Mx2 = 1.14, My2 = 1.06 are obtained, respectively. This advanced single-frequency fiber laser has great potential for the long-range coherent Doppler lidar and the next generation of gravitational wave detection.

Abstract:High-power single-longitudinal-mode regrowth-free gain-coupled distributed feedback laser diode based on ridge waveguide with periodic current injection is achieved at 990 nm. Our device is fabricated only by standard i-line lithography with micron-scale precision, obtains an excellent performance at high injection current. A continuous-wave power of over 0.681 W is achieved at 3 A. The maximum continuous-wave power at single-longitudinal-mode operation is up to 0.303 W at 1.4 A. Narrow linewidth emission has been reached with a 3 dB spectrum width less than 1.41 pm. The high side mode suppression ratio is over 35 dB. The lateral far field divergence angle is only 15.05°, the beam quality factor M2 is 1.245, achieving a laterally near-diffraction-limit emission. It is more beneficial for single-mode fiber coupling as pumping sources and other applications which require high beam quality at high power with easy fabrication technique.

Abstract:Frequency-sweeping lasers have drawn considerable attentions, especially in FMCW LIDAR. The frequency sweeping single-frequency PM fiber laser is respectively realized by piezoelectric (PZT) modulation and pump modulation, which using the same Er-doped distributed Bragg reflection (DBR) fiber cavity. The central wavelength is 1552.49 nm with the extinction ratio of above 20 dB. The frequency sweeping range of PZT modulation is seen to be up to 745 MHz under the modulation repetition rate of 1Hz, and the modulation repetition rate of the pump can be tuned from 1Hz to 20 kHz. However, the frequency sweeping range and tunable range of pump modulation is 635 MHz and from 1Hz to 10 kHz, respectively. Comparing with both methods, the PZT modulation has wider sweeping range and tunable range, however, the mechanical resonance will be occurred. The pump modulation indicates virtually linearly frequency modulation. Future works to achieve more characteristic of two modulation methods are undergoing.
High efficient 120W 1018nm single-frequency narrow linewidth amplification based on wide-tunable DBR fiber seed source

Abstract:This paper reports the achievement of 120W single-frequency narrow linewidth 1018nm laser based on wide-tunable DBR fiber seed source. The DBR structure seed source uses 8mm long doped optical fibers with a line width of 3.25k. The wavelength tuning range of this seed source exceeds 1.5 nm with the temperature range from 1°C to 95°C. The tuning wavelength and temperature show extremely high linearity, and there is no mode hopping during the tuning process. By adopting a multi-level fiber amplification structure, selecting appropriate doped fibers and optimizing their length, an output power exceeding 120W of 1018nm laser has been achieved. Measurement results indicate that the slope efficiency of the main amplification 77.3%, with an amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) suppression ratio greater than 60 dB. he output linewidth is 10.3 kHz, and the beam quality factor M2 is less than 1.3.

Abstract:The key to realizing a high-performance frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) laser frequency-sweeping light source is how to extend the frequency-swept bandwidth and eliminate the effect of nonlinearity. To solve these issues, this paper designs a broadband high-linear FMCW frequency-sweeping light source system based on the combination of fixed temperature control and digital optoelectronic phase-locked loop (PLL), which controls the temperatures of the two lasers separately and attempts to achieve the coarse spectral stitching based on a time-division multiplexing scheme. Furthermore, we uses the PLL to correct the frequency error more specifically after the coarse stitching, which achieves the spectrum fine stitching and, meanwhile, realizes the nonlinearity correction. The experimental results show that our scheme can successfully achieve bandwidth expansion and nonlinearity correction, and the sweeping bandwidth is twice as much as that of the original single laser. The full-width half-maximum (FWHM) of the FMCW output is reduced from 150 kHz to 6.1 kHz, which exhibits excellent nonlinear correction performance. The relative error of the FMCW ranging system based on this frequency-swept light source is also reduced from 1.628% to 0.673%. Therefore, our frequency-swept light source with excellent performance has a promising application in the FMCW laser ranging system.

Abstract:Based on a 1.8-cm-long heavily Tm3+-doped germanate fiber and being in-band-pumped by a 1610 nm single-mode laser, a high-efficiency and high-power single-frequency distribute Bragg reflector (DBR) fiber laser emitting at 1950 nm is demonstrated. The DBR fiber laser has a maximum output power of ~617 mW and a slope efficiency for the absorbed pump power reaches to more than 42.2%. A stable single-longitudinal-mode laser output with a signal-to-noise ratio of greater than 63 dB is realized. The measured relative intensity-noise of the fiber laser reaches to around -150 dB/Hz at frequencies of over 8.4 MHz. It is beneficial to exploit the sub-watt and high-efficiency single-frequency laser from fiber oscillators directly, especially in the application of multiple paths coherent beam combination and optical medical technology.

Abstract:A 1080 nm single-polarization single frequency distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) fiber laser is fabricated by directly inscribing fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) in ytterbium-doped fiber using a femtosecond laser. The high reflectivity FBG with high birefringence is prepared by femtosecond laser overexposure, serving a polarizing element. The low reflectivity FBG is inscribed by scanning axially along the fiber to narrow the FBG bandwidth. This DBR fiber laser avoided the mode hopping as temperature variation and intracavity fusion loss. A single frequency laser with an output power greater than 11 mW, a linewidth of 32 kHz, and a polarization extinction ratio of 10 dB is achieved at a pump power of 517 mW. The influences of the cavity length and LR-FBG reflectivity on the linewidth and output power are further studied. This provides a reference for optimizing the performance of integrated single-frequency DBR fiber laser prepared by a femtosecond laser.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a high-power eight-wavelength distributed feedback (DFB) laser array with 100 GHz spacing using the grating reflector (GR). The GR, which is a uniform sampled grating, can provide light reflection instead of high reflection (HR) facet coating. Thus, the front and rear facets are both coated with anti-reflection coatings (AR/AR) to avoid the influence of a random grating phase at the HR facet. Therefore, more output power, better single-longitudinal-mode operation, and higher wavelength precision can be simultaneously achieved, compared with traditional DFB lasers with HR/AR facet coatings. The maximum output power and side mode suppression ratio of the fabricated eight-channel GR-DFB laser array as high as 70 mW and 55 dB can be achieved, which may benefit wavelength division multiplexing transmission systems, gas sensors, optical computing systems, and microwave photonic signal processing.

Abstract:Recent advances in the development of ultra-low loss silicon nitride (Si3N4)-based photonic integrated circuits have allowed integrated lasers to achieve a coherence exceeding those of fiber lasers and enabled unprecedentedly fast (Megahertz bandwidth) tuning using monolithically integrated piezoelectrical actuators. While this marks the first time that fiber laser coherence is achieved using photonic integrated circuits, in conjunction with frequency agility that exceeds those of legacy bulk lasers, the approach is presently compounded by the high cost of manufacturing DFB, as required for self-injection locking, as well as the precise control over the laser current and temperature to sustain a low noise locked operation. Reflective semiconductor optical amplifiers (RSOA) provide a cost-effective alternative solution but have not yet achieved similar performance in coherence or frequency agility, as required for frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) LiDAR, laser locking in frequency metrology or wavelength modulation spectroscopy for gas sensing. Here, we overcome this challenge and demonstrate an RSOA-based and frequency agile integrated laser tuned with high speed, good linearity, high optical output power, and turn-key operability while maintaining a small footprint. This is achieved using a tunable extended distributed Bragg reflector (E-DBR) in an ultra-low loss 200 nm thin Si3N4 platform with monolithically integrated piezoelectric actuators. We co-integrate the DBR with a compact ultra-low loss spiral resonator to further reduce the intrinsic optical linewidth of the laser to the Hertz level -- on par with the noise of a fiber laser -- via self-injection locking.

Abstract:Optical carried microwave radar (OCMR), combining the advantages of lidar and microwave radar, uses an intensity-modulated laser beam as the medium to detect the distance and velocity of objects. In order to achieve a high ranging resolution at long distance, a high-power frequency chirped intensity-modulated light source at a 1064-nm wavelength was developed. A low-power narrow-linewidth 1064-nm laser beam was input to a Mach-Zehnder electro-optic modulator (EOM), and the frequency of the EOM was tuned from 10 MHz to 2.1 GHz. The output from the EOM was coupled to a laser-diode-pumped ytterbium-doped fiber amplifier (YDFA). A maximum output power of 29.5 W was achieved from the YDFA. We measured the frequency characteristics of the modulated laser beams before and after amplification, respectively. The amplification process did not bring any obvious degeneration of the modulation in terms of the bandwidth, frequency stability, chirping linearity, and modulation depth. Our research presents a new approach of obtaining a high-power broad-band intensity-modulated light source for OCMR.

Abstract:Frequency-agile lasers that can simultaneously feature low noise characteristics as well as fast mode hop-free frequency tuning are keystone components for applications ranging from frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) LiDAR, to coherent optical communication and gas sensing. The hybrid integration of III-V gain media with low-loss photonic integrated circuits (PICs) has recently enabled integrated lasers with faster tuning and lower phase noise than the best legacy systems, including fiber lasers. In addition, lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI) PICs have enabled to exploit the Pockels effect to demonstrate self-injection locked hybrid lasers with tuning rates reaching peta-hertz per second. However, Pockels-tunable laser archetypes relying on high-Q optical microresonators have thus far only achieved limited output powers, are difficult to operate and stabilize due to the dynamics of self-injection locking, and require many analog control parameters. Here, we overcome this challenge by leveraging an extended distributed Bragg reflector (E-DBR) architecture to demonstrate a simple and turn-key operable frequency-agile Pockels laser that can be controlled with single analog operation and modulation inputs. Our laser supports a continuous mode hop-free tuning range of over 10 GHz with good linearity and flat actuation bandwidth up to 10 MHz, while achieving over 15 mW in-fiber output power at 1545 nm and kHz-level intrinsic linewidth, a combination unmet by legacy bulk lasers. This hybrid laser design combines an inexpensive reflective semiconductor optical amplifier (RSOA) with an electro-optic DBR PIC manufactured at wafer-scale on a LNOI platform. We showcase the performance and flexibility of this laser in proof-of-concept coherent optical ranging (FMCW LiDAR) demonstration, achieving a 4 cm distance resolution and in a hydrogen cyanide spectroscopy experiment.

Abstract:A high pulse energy and high power all-fiber-optic single frequency laser at 1572 nm has been demonstrated and delivered for CO2 LIDAR applications. The main amplifier is made with the company’s proprietary large mode area highly erbium-doped silicate glass fiber with a core diameter of 50 $\mu$ m. The pump laser is a high power 1480 nm Raman fiber laser. A maximum pulse energy of 2.2 mJ has been achieved at 2.5 kHz pulse repetition rate with diffraction limited beam quality, which is the highest pulse energy and average power combination for an all-fiber based laser at 1572 nm to the best of our knowledge. For purpose of extended lifetime and consistent performance, the output pulse energy from the delivered unit was limited to 1.8 mJ with a pulse duration of ~600 ns, corresponding to a peak power of ~3.0 kW.

Abstract:High-power high-beam-quality 1.34 μm continuous-wave laser with twin Nd:YVO4 crystals pumped by four fiber-coupled laser diodes, which constructed a double-end-pumping structure, is reported. With total 60 W pumping power incident, the highest 16.4 W output laser power was generated, the slope efficiency and optical efficiency were measured as better than 30.0% and 27.3%, respectively. With 12 W laser output, the beam quality was measured to be better than two times diffraction-limit and the instability of laser output was determined to be better than 1% over an hour time.
