Abstract:We demonstrate a fully solid-state beam scanner that incorporates a Si3N4 photonic integrated switch array, a collimator lens, and a lithographically patterned diffraction grating. The off-chip components enable nearly circular output beams under the reduced system complexity. By manipulating the optical switch array and tuning the input wavelength, two-dimensional beam steering with $32\times23$ = 736 resolvable spots across a $14.3^{\circ }\times 9.9^{\circ }$ field of view (FOV) is realized. Furthermore, the coherent ranging within 18 m is demonstrated experimentally by utilizing the triangular frequency modulation. The tested results validate the feasibility of the proposed beam scanner, which might offer a flexible, scalable, and easily-implemented solution for the solid-state frequency modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) LiDAR.

Abstract:We demonstrate a hybrid solid-state beam scanner based on 32-channel silicon nitride optical switch with the assistance of transmission blazed grating. The optical switch exhibits rather low power consumption of 7.2 mW/π. Besides, end-fire antennas offer high optical efficiency with less reflection. Non-mechanical two-dimensional beam steering with range of 14.32° × 9.94° and beam divergence of <0.1° is achieved by wavelength tuning and onchip optical path switching. The proposed system eliminates complex control and time-consuming array phase calibration, providing a flexible, scalable and effective solution for all solid-state coaxial light detection and ranging (LiDAR) technology.

Abstract:We demonstrate dispersive optical phased arrays based on the Si3N4-on-Si platform. Two-dimensional beam steering across a 45.6 °× 10 °FOV with a beam width of 1.45 °× 0.032 °is achieved by wavelength tuning alone. Abstract:The beam scanner is a predominant part in the light detection and ranging (LiDAR) system to achieve three-dimensional (3D) imaging. The solid-state beam-steering device has emerged as a promising candidate technology for a beam scanner with the advantages of robustness, stability, and high scanning speed. Here we propose a frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) LiDAR system with an in-fiber solid-state beam scanner. A 45 degrees tilted fiber grating (TFG) is first employed to achieve in-fiber solid-state spectral scanning in the LiDAR system. A maximum output efficiency of 93.7% is achieved with proper polarization control. A single-mode fiber is then used to fabricate a 2-cm 45 degrees TFG, which significantly reduces the size and the cost of the beam scanner in the LiDAR system. We experimentally realize 3D imaging of targets placed at a distance of 1.2 m based on our proposed LiDAR system. Abstract:The beam-steering device is a critical component in LiDAR systems for 3D imaging. Solid-state beam-steering devices attract the most attention for their advantages of robustness, fast beam-steering speed, and stability. However, solid-state beam-steering devices, such as optical phased arrays (OPAs), are challenging to realize 2D scanning ability. Here we employed a virtually imaged phased array (VIPA) in the LiDAR system to realize all solid-state two-dimensional (2D) beam-steering based on dispersion only. A frequency swept laser source is used for performing optical frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) ranging and 2D beam steering simultaneously. The 2D disperser is compact and can be easily implemented owing to its simple structure. The mechanism of continuous scanning and ranging is beneficial for obtaining high lateral resolution, and a lateral resolution of 0.06° is achieved. 3D maps of the object at a distance of 2 m are obtained with cm-level ranging precision. The frame rate of the proposed LiDAR system only depends on the wavelength-tuning speed of the swept laser source, with the potential to realize ultrafast solid-state LiDAR systems.

Abstract:This article presents a 16-channel analog silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) with on-chip front-end for direct time-of-flight (D-ToF) LiDAR applications. The proposed receiver is mainly composed of 16-channel SiPM, variable gain amplifier (VGA) and time-to-digital converter (TDC). Each SiPM channel consists of 256 microcells, and their outputs are connected to a common output terminal in parallel. A novel active quenching circuit is adopted to reduce the long exponential tail in conventional SiPM and enable the capability of multi-echo detection. Current steering circuits are adopted within microcells to make the output current of SiPM immune to SPAD gain variations. The receiver was fabricated in 180-nm HV CMOS technology and integrated into the 16-line LiDAR prototype with optical components. Measurement results show that the sensor is capable of 20 m range imaging with 3 cm accuracy under 40 klux background light conditions. With the mechanical scanning system, a high-resolution image ( $240\times16$ ) can be obtained.

Abstract:We demonstrate a 63-channel grating-lobe-free optical phased array, in which end-fire antennas were fabricated with a pitch of 775 nm to eliminate grating lobe. Phase mismatch was configured to suppress the optical crosstalk in the dense waveguides. Two-dimensional beam steering within 16°× 2.7° were presented by thermal phase shifting and wavelength tuning.

Abstract:We demonstrate 32-channel dispersive optical phased arrays on a Si3N4-on-SOI integration platform. The phase difference is introduced by the arrayed waveguide. Beam steering in phased-array direction with an aliasing-free range of 22.4 degrees and free spectrum ranges of similar to 60 nm and similar to 6 nm is achieved. Meanwhile, the main lobe is deflected simultaneously by 19.67 degrees in the other direction by tuning the wavelength from 1500 nm to 1630 nm. Measurement results show that the dispersive optical phased array provides a compact, low-power and massively parallel solution for LiDAR applications.

Abstract:Spectral scan, or beam steering by only wavelength tuning enables inertia-less fast-scanning LiDAR, while the field of view is fundamentally limited by the total available wavelength range and the dispersion ability of common gratings. Here, we propose to relieve the restriction by combining a diffraction grating and a low-cost diffractive element, which enables wide-angle two-dimensional beam steering. An FoV far beyond the reach of other spectral scan methods can be achieved. Several diffractive elements samples are fabricated to demonstrate spectrally scanning field of views of $7.7^{\circ } \times 10^{\circ }$ and $7.7^{\circ } \times 29^{\circ }$ from an 100-nm wavelength tuning range. Also, to show the potential to further extend the spectral scan range, blazed diffractive elements are fabricated with high diffraction efficiency, which corresponds to a spectral scan range up to 40.3°. Based on the structure, a solid-state coherent LiDAR system is built. Three-dimensional imaging with mm-level range resolution is demonstrated.

Abstract:Nonmechanical beam-steering devices are of importance to achieve fast, compact, and reliable LiDAR. We propose a 2D nonmechanical beam-steering device based on a virtually imaged phased array (VIPA) for frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) LiDAR. In the design, 2D nonmechanical beam steering and high-resolution FMCW ranging can be achieved at the same time by wavelength tuning. The design formulas of the VIPA-based 2D disperser are greatly simplified by introducing appropriate approximation, and a feasible design procedure is proposed for the first time, to the best of our knowledge. Based on the proposed method, several design examples with different optimal properties are exhibited.

Abstract:Narrow linewidth and fast-chirped frequency are essential in frequency-modulated continuous-wave lasers. We introduce a laser that meets these requirements by coupling a distributed feedback laser with an external high-Q microring resonator, where a bulky stacked piezoelectric chip is attached to the resonator for fast tuning. The laser demonstrates an ultranarrow intrinsic linewidth of 22 Hz in the self-injection-locked state. Actuated by the bulky piezoelectric chip, the maximum triangular actuation bandwidth can reach 100 kHz. The driving voltage is filtered to avoid a resonant mechanical mode, obtaining the minimum residual linearity error at 10 kHz with a 4.2 GHz tuning range. A light detection and ranging system was set up for a proof-of-concept experiment, demonstrating a high detection precision with standard deviations of 2.7 and 4.0 cm for targets at 15 and 30 m, respectively.

Abstract:Non-mechanical LiDAR systems have attracted extensive research interests due to their advantages of robustness and high beam-steering speed. Recently, spectral scanning has emerged as a promising solid-state beam-steering method, which combines dispersive elements with frequency-swept laser sources to perform ultrafast beam-steering. However, swept light sources used in LiDAR systems, such as semiconductor lasers and supercontinuum sources, are usually suffering from low sweep rate, bulky and high-cost that severely hinder the development of spectral-scanning LiDAR. Here, we propose a non-mechanical spectral-scanning frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) LiDAR system based on a simple compact tunable vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL). The fast-swept VCSEL together with wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) technology is employed for high-speed beam-steering. Millimeter-level ranging accuracy and a lateral resolution of 0.286° with an overall depth voxel acquisition rate of 128 kHz are achieved experimentally.

Abstract:Empowered by compact micro-ring (MRR) arrays, wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM)-based focal plane switch array (FPSA) chip is a promising solution for light detection and ranging (LiDAR) due to its parallelism and high-level integration. However, an MRR channel with a shifting central wavelength may interrupt another channel by dropping an optical signal with an unexpected wavelength, which causes discontinuous beam scanning. To overcome this bottleneck, we propose and fabricate a hitless two-dimensional (2-D) FPSA chip based on a 2 x 8 Mach-Zehnder interferometer-embedded micro-ring resonator (MZER) array. The FPSA chip realizes a beam divergence of 0.18 degrees x 0.05 degrees, a field of view (FoV) of 9.07 degrees x 6.42 degrees with single-ended emission, and a FoV of 10.75 degrees x 6.42 degrees with dual-ended field-of-view splicing technology. Besides, we demonstrate the hitless function of our FPSA chip by performing continuous wavelength sweeping and further applying it to a free-space optical communication link. The experimental results validate the feasibility of our proposed hitless FPSA chip, which efficiently prevents signal interruptions during beam steering.

Abstract:In a solid-state photonics-based Lidar, all essential components can be integrated into a silicon chip. It is simple and effective to use a tunable laser source to implement Lidar's beam steering. However, how to effectively increase the steering angle in a small wavelength tuning range is usually a key challenge due to the limited material and waveguide dispersion. In Silicon-on-insulator waveguide, we design a novel solid-state Lidar using two trans-electrical (TE) polarized beams counter-propagating towards each other. Two corresponding output beams from just a single grating coupler (GC) can be seamlessly combined to double the beam steering angle. Furthermore, a low-priced solid-state Lidar is designed for TE polarized beams counter-propagating towards each other by using wavelength division multiplexed laser array.

Abstract:A light beam scanning technology for3D sensing has been attracting much interest thanks to its signal-to-noise-ratio merit compared to conventional flash 3D sensing. A Solid-state beam scanner based on a vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) with amplification function was invented. In this paper, though enlarging the length of scanner to 6 mm, a narrow beam divergence of <0.025$^\circ $ was recorded. We proposed and developed a solid-state scanner with ultra-large field of view and high resolution by counter-propagation integration and by equipping a one-dimensional 7-spot diffractive optical element (DOE), functioning a beam splitter. It greatly enlarged the field of view to 105$^\circ $ with maintaining the narrow beam divergence. A record number of resolution points of >4000 was obtained. Its intensity variation is < 40 and could be further improved by better DOE design and fabrication process. The DOE could be simply stacked on the scanner and thus the submodule size of the scanner could be managed within 7 mm $ \times $ 1 mm $ \times $ 1 mm. We also discussed its integrability with a tunable seed laser and its application in 2D beam scanning for better signal to noise ratios.

Abstract:An optical system for scanning angle amplification in tunable laser based all-solid lidar is theoretically analyzed and experimentally demonstrated with θ=51° when tuning the wavelength from 1531.2nm to 1566.6nm. We have achieved 22 points beam-steering which is identical to the tunable laser channels. The device has several microseconds beam switching speed and 1.4° beam divergence. The size of the device is compact which is only 5cm×4.5cm×1.8cm, and the total system is low-cost.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a novel light detection and ranging (LiDAR) system for 3-D imaging, combined with laser feedback interferometry (LFI) and frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW). Compared with the conventional FMCW method, the intracavity interference between the echo signal and local oscillator enhances the amplitude of the generated beat signal effectively, which improves the sensitivity in weak-signal detection with low photon consumption. The improvement is still effective even with frequency modulation nonlinearity. Besides, the system inherits the advantages of FMCW, possessing the capacity to measure position and velocity simultaneously. In experiments, the validity of distance and velocity measurement is demonstrated, and 3-D imaging is realized by employing a pair of beam scanners. With a less than $200 \mu \text{W}$ probe beam, the system achieves imaging over 65 m away in various scenes with good fidelity, and the distance resolution is better than 1 mm. A portable prototype is also designed and fabricated. Overall, the proposed system possesses high echo-signal sensitivity, simple structure, and dynamic information availability, which provides a new idea for FMCW-LiDAR optimization for practical applications.
