Abstract:Torpedoes play an irreplaceable role in naval warfare; therefore, it is significant to study the dynamic response of the direct navigation of torpedoes. In order to study the dynamic response of torpedoes under different Munk moment coefficients, the dynamic equation of torpedoes is established based on the momentum theorem and the momentum moment theorem. The linear motion mathematical model of torpedoes is obtained. The relationship between the torpedo and the Munk moment coefficient is derived. The straight-line motion model of the torpedo under different Munk moments is established, and the dynamic properties of the space motion of the torpedo are analyzed. It is found that the Munk moment coefficient increase will lead to an increase in the deflection of the torpedo’s direct motion on each degree of freedom, and the Munk moment coefficient is related to the additional mass matrix. During the design of the torpedo, the added mass should be reduced by changing the shape of the torpedo as much as possible so as to reduce the pitch moment, yaw, and roll moments of the torpedo.
An efficient and modular modeling for launch dynamics of tubed rockets on a moving launcher

Abstract:This paper develops a modular modeling and efficient formulation of launch dynamics with marching fire (LDMF) using a mixed formulation of the transfer matrix method for multibody systems (MSTMM) and Newton-Euler formulation. Taking a ground-borne multiple launch rocket systems (MLRS), the focus is on the launching subsystem comprising the rocket, flexible tube, and tube tail. The launching subsystem is treated as a coupled rigid-flexible multibody system, where the rocket and tube tail are treated as rigid bodies while the flexible tube as a beam with large motion. Firstly, the tube and tube tail can be elegantly handled by the MSTMM, a computationally efficient order-N formulation. Then, the equation of motion of the in-bore rocket with relative kinematics w.r.t. the tube using the Newton-Euler method is derived. Finally, the rocket, tube, and tube tail dynamics are coupled, yielding the equation of motion of the launching subsystem that can be regarded as a building block and further integrated with other subsystems. The deduced dynamics equation of the launching subsystem is not limited to ground-borne MLRS but also fits for tanks, self-propelled artilleries, and other air-borne and naval-borne weapons undergoing large motion. Numerical simulation results of LDMF are given and partially verified by the experiment.

Abstract:In order to improve the recoil reduction ability of the weapon without reducing the projectile velocity, the weapon with a nozzle and two chambers separated by a partition is proposed. Taking the 35 mm caliber grenade launcher as the research object, the physical model of its launching process is proposed, and the one-dimensional two-phase flow interior ballistic model is established. MacCormack difference scheme is used to calculate the coupling of multiple physical fields formed by front and rear chambers and nozzles. Compared with the calculation results obtained by using the classical interior ballistic model, the correctness of the two-phase flow interior ballistic model is verified. The effects of the charge amount in the rear chamber and the size of the air guide hole in the barrel on the internal ballistic performance of the weapon with a nozzle and two chambers separated by a partition. The calculation results show that compared with conventional weapons, the recoil impulse can be reduced with maintaining muzzle velocity, and the recoil reduction efficiency can reach 72.27%, which is of great significance for improving weapon performance.

Abstract:Abstract To study the dynamic performance of a grenade machine gun system with soft recoil technology and analyze the floating mechanism parameters affecting the firing dispersion, a rigid-flexible coupling multi-body dynamics model was established. A twenty-round firing process of the grenade machine gun system was simulated and analyzed. The firing dispersion of the grenade machine gun system was obtained based on the external ballistics model, and the simulation model was validated by comparing the numerical results with the experimental data. The effects of the floating mechanism parameters on the cradle force, the projectile dispersion, and the firing dispersion sparsity were discussed. The results show that the projectile dispersion of the GMG system is well predicted by the simulation model, and the floating parameters that are matched reasonably could improve the firing dispersion and reduce the gun recoil force.

Abstract:Ballistic design work has been carried out to assess the appearance and dimensions of the double-barrel launcher with an accelerating-channel length of up to 1 m. Based on the ballistic design, the development, design study, and manufacture of the double-barrel launcher have been performed. An ignition system has been developed, with which it is possible to throw two supercavitating strikers into an air or water environment simultaneously and with a programmable delay. Test experiments on throwing two supercavitating strikers into air and water have been conducted under the conditions of a hydroballistic stand.

The Launch Dynamics of Supersonic Projectiles

Abstract:The aerodynamics of a projectile launched from barrels of various devices is quite complicated due to its interactions with the unsteady flow field around it. A computational study using moving grid method is performed here to analyze the effect of the projectile-shock wave interaction. Cylindrical and conical projectiles have been employed to study such interactions and the fluid dynamics of such flow fields. It is found that the overall effect of projectile overtaking a blast wave on the unsteady aerodynamic characteristics of the projectile is hardly affected by the projectile configurations. However, it is noticed that the projectile configurations do affect the unsteady flow structures and hence the drag coefficient for the conical projectile shows considerable variation from that of the cylindrical projectile. The projectile aerodynamic characteristics, when it interacts with the secondary shock wave, are analyzed in detail. It is also observed that the change in the characteristics of the secondary shock wave during the interaction is different for different projectile configurations. Both inviscid and viscous simulations were done to study the projectile aerodynamics. It is found that the effect of the viscosity on the projectile aerodynamics is negligible but the viscosity does affect the unsteady flow structures around the projectile.

Abstract:The majority of ballistic experiments in granular media in the literature involve horizontally launching projectiles. Notwithstanding the significant scientific findings resulting from these studies, the depth-dependence of geostatic stresses is not captured in a horizontal configuration. The design and performance of a vertical ballistic range is described herein. The range is capable of launching projectiles at impact speeds of up to 900 m/s into soil targets. A pluviator is employed to prepare sand targets with precise and highly repeatable bulk densities. Use of a photon Doppler velocimeter (PDV) and other instrumentation to track projectile velocity both in-flight and during penetration into the soil target are elucidated. A relationship is found between the muzzle velocity and chamber pressure. Launcher performance is quantified by comparing measured muzzle velocities with theoretical velocities calculated from isentropic expansion of gas behind the projectile in the launcher barrel. It is found that the launcher efficiency is in the range of 70 to 90%, with efficiency increasing for heavier projectiles. The PDV instrumentation developed for the range successfully resolves projectile velocities in flight and during penetration into the soil target.

Abstract:The analysis of a new "rolling release" mechanism is presented for three different "siege engine" designs. The range obtained with the rolling release is compared to the ranges obtained using the simpler "cup" and the proven "sling" release mechanisms. It is found that the rolling release is a significant improvement over the cup release, but the range of the rolling release is still well short of that attained with the sling release. It is also noted that the familiar "spoon" projectile holder used on many siege engines operates in a rolling release manner, contrary to appearances and to some previous published studies. Instead, the release mechanism used in ancient engines and in modern kit-purchased replicas is the rolling release.

Abstract:The flight behavior of the spin-stabilized 105 mm M1 artillery projectile, when fired with high quadrant elevation, is studied using six-degrees-of-freedom trajectory simulations and theoretical methods of stability analysis. Trajectory simulation results confirm the known effect of overstabilization at the apogee, leading to high angles of attack (AoA), drift to the left, and base-forward descent. For quadrant elevations between nose-forward and base-forward descent, a previously unknown descent mode was discovered, with projectiles performing a low-frequency coning motion at high angles of attack of 73 and 104 deg, respectively. An exhaustive theoretical description of such high-AoA limit cycles is given that overcomes the limitation to small angles of attack prevalent in traditional concepts of projectile stability. Based on a formulation of the angular motion in spherical coordinates, conditions for the existence of limit cycles are identified and stability criteria are derived using Lyapunov’s first method of linearization around equilibrium and eigenvalue analysis of the resulting Jacobian. The resulting criteria indicate that limit cycle flight is primarily governed by the Magnus moment coefficient. The method is applied to the 105 mm M1 projectile, and the coning motions observed in the trajectory simulations are accurately reproduced by the theory.

Abstract:As a complex beam structure system, the barrel vibration during firing directly affects the system stability and projectile hitting accuracy. In this paper, an efficient calculation method is proposed for the dynamic response of the complex beam structure system. Based on the extended Hamilton's theorem, the kinetic equations of the axially moving beam under the action of moving mass are established and solved; the model of the cradle-barrel-projectile beam structural system is established, and the kinetic response is numerically calculated by considering the interaction relationship of the relevant structures during the firing process of the artillery; the kinetic tests of the artillery firing muzzle are designed and completed. The results show that the proposed method outperforms the existing commercial software in solving the dynamic response of complex beam structure systems and has higher computational efficiency while ensuring the accuracy of the calculation. This paper provides a theoretical reference for the rapid calculation and prediction of the dynamic response of artillery firing and an efficient calculation method for the dynamics of complex beam structure systems.

Abstract:During operation, a launcher is subjected to severe impact load that can be reduced and controlled by buffers inside the launcher. The present paper proposes a double-layer permanent-magnet axial buffer where the eddy current damper consumes recoil energy from impact load and regulates the displacement, velocity and recoil resistance of the recoiling part. Then the recuperator makes the recoiling part return to its starting position smoothly. The eddy currents generated in the buffer serve as a cushion for impact load. Through solving the differential equations of motion of the recoiling part, the recoil displacement, recoil resistance and eddy current damping energy efficiency for different parameters are obtained. Experimental investigations using a prototype are conducted to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed design. Over a broad range, experimental results match well with numerical ones. The maximum error of recoil displacement is 4.8% and the maximum error of recoil resistance is 7.4%. It is shown that the proposed buffer provides a greater damping force, tremendously decrease the peak, and effectively controls an instantaneous strong impact load, compared with existing eddy current buffers employed in launchers in the literature. On Dynamics of a Cannon Barrel-Recoil Mechanism with Nonlinear Hydraulic Damper and Air-Springs

Abstract:The objective of this paper is to investigate the dynamics of the barrel assembly-recoil mechanism of military cannons when using air springs and hydraulic dampers of nonlinear characteristics in their recoil mechanisms. The nonlinear characteristics of the damper and spring and the recoil mechanism orientation introduce extra nonlinearity to the dynamic model of the system. An extremely nonlinear model of the barrel assembly is derived and solved using Runge-Kutta 4 method to provide the dynamic response of the barrel assembly upon firing. The simulation results using the data of a Howitzer M114 cannon are presented for recoil mechanism orientation ≤ 50 degrees and number of recoil elements up to 4. The performance of the recoil mechanism is evaluated through the minimum and maximum displacements of the barrel assembly, the settling time of its response upon firing and the steady-state error of its time response. The analysis shows that the it is possible with the suggested recoil elements to obtain barrel assembly response similar to that of a critically damped second-order system. It is possible with proper selection of the recoil assembly parameters to decrease the maximum barrel displacement to only 14 mm without undershoot and the settling time to about 2 seconds with steady-state error as small as about 1 mm .

Abstract:Firing precision,launch safety and absence of dynamic design means are difficult problems,thus restricting the development of ″metal storm″ weapon.Based on transfer matrix method of the multibody system,from the viewpoint of the weapon system including projectile,gun,and propellant,a launch dynamics model of multi-rigid-flexible-body system and a launch dynamics equation of ″metal storm″ weapon are established,difficult problems of vibration characteristic computation and the dynamic response analysis are solved.A launch dynamics simulation program of ″metal storm″ weapon is written.Vibration characteristics,interior ballistics,motion in bore,dynamic response,exterior ballistics,and firing dispersion are obtaind by simulation.A quantitative relation between the dynamic performance and system parameters is established.Results provide a theory base and technical means for dynamic design,performance improvement,and solving difficult problems of the restricted development of ″metal storm″ weapon.

Abstract:Compared with steam catapult system, electromagnetic launcher (EML) system is highly integrated, and it has high and well matching performance. It will be widely used aircraft carriers ejection, rocket launchers etc in future. Double-side tabular permanent magnet linear synchronous motor (PMLSM) for electromagnetic launcher can meet the requirements of big thrust and high efficiency etc. It can accelerate the launcher at the expected speed in short time. The thrust characteristic of the launcher is essential to the whole electromagnetic launcher system. Large thrust and small thrust ripple are both expected. This paper studies thrust characteristic of different pole arc coefficients, compares the series and parallel magnetic circuit structures, and analyses the method of staggering a certain distance between poles on both sides. In order to achieve the goal of large thrust, the launcher is often designed with high current density. As a result, it is of great loss and has quick temperature rise. This paper establishes numerical model of the two-dimensional (2D) primary transient temperature field. The temperature field of the short-term system is analyzed. The calculated and experimental results of the electromagnetic launchers can provide a basis for optimum design.

Abstract:AbstractOne of the current tendencies is to equip the unguided munition designed for ballistic shooting with low cost, solid propellant lateral thrusters based, actuators to achieve the controlled flight functionality and reduce the collateral damage. The basic technical challenge connected with this type of pulsed control system is that each from the thrusters could be used only once which results in projectile low control authority. The thruster parameters have crucial impact on the achieved hit accuracy. The main goal of this article was to investigate and understand the influence of control force magnitude on the guidance process using six-degree-of-freedom numerical simulation. 122 mm artillery rocket controlled with the aim of 30 solid propellant thrusters mounted before center of mass was chosen as a test object. Single channel control was considered. The impact point prediction algorithm based on point mass model was developed and implemented into a Matlab software. Using Monte-Carlo simulations the optimum lateral thruster force amplitude was obtained for shots at low elevation angle. The numerical experiments showed that with the proposed method the circular error probable of the projectile might be reduced 10 times when compared to unguided case.

Abstract:Electromagnetic launch technology has important applications in many fields. However, the extremely harsh multi-physics environment during the launch is quite different from that of conventional guns. Little experimental research studied the dynamic distribution of the extreme impact environment and magnetic fields in the projectile. To this end, this paper designs a projectile-borne storage testing system for the dynamic measurement of harsh multi-physics environments. The detailed assessment of the measured dynamic multi-physics field shows that the velocity skin effect (VSE) is an important factor affecting the dynamic results. It causes a higher current density in the armature, and the magnetic induction and acceleration in the dynamic experiment are lower than those in the static-based experiment and simulation. Moreover, it causes the concentrated heat on the trailing edge of the armature, which lead to the melt-wave erosion, even affects the movement of integrated projectile during launch. Furthermore, the physical mechanism behind these phenomenon is revealed, and the causes of muzzle velocity error are analyzed. In conclusion, a feasible, dynamic measurement method for multi-physics coupled environments is presented, which can provide references for follow-up modeling and simulation researches and promote the development of railguns.

Abstract:Problems involving chains, cables, or ropes that are dropped, folded, or pass around pulleys attract ongoing interest, in part because they can become variable-mass situations if the chain is partitioned into sections for analysis. Less attention has been paid to trying to intentionally project the end of a string as far as possible. Here we consider the launch of a grappling hook connected to a long flexible rope, such as the cartoon character Batman might do. As a real-life example of their use, rocket-propelled ropes with grapnels were employed to ascend French cliffs on D-Day, although the wetness of the lines made the task more difficult than expected. Line launchers have also been used to access the roofs of burning buildings.

Abstract:An electromagnetic rail launcher (ERL) is essentially a high-speed linear motor, which can accelerate projectiles from milligrams to several kilograms and the velocities of which can reach more than several kilometers per second. In this article, the dynamic electromechanical characteristics of an ERL with the cross-section of plane, convex, and concave rails under different conditions of frictional coefficient and channel cooling are investigated. The kinematic characteristics of armatures and the stress distribution of three types of rails are compared. The mathematical relation between the frictional coefficient, the sliding time, and the armature speed in an ERL with three types of rails is obtained. The equations for the frictional coefficient, the sliding time, and the displacement of armature in an ERL with three types of rails are obtained. Under the same frictional coefficient condition, the velocity and displacement of armature in an ERL with a convex rail are the largest. The peak stress in a plane rail during one shot period is the greatest. In light of obtaining a higher armature velocity and moderate stress in a rail, the ERL with convex rails is the best one.

Abstract:Based on the 60 mm artillery grenade, a slow-release structure was designed to reduce the severity of ammunitions response to accidental thermal stimulation and improve the thermal stability of ammunitions. The slow-release structure was made of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and connected the fuse and the projectile body through internal and external threads. To study the safety of the slow-release structure under artillery launching overload, mechanical analysis of the slow-release structure was simulated via finite element analysis (FEA). The impacts of various factors (e.g., fuse mass, number of threads, and nominal diameter of internal threads of the slow-release structure) on the connection strength of the slow-release structure were studied. A strength-prediction model based on the fuse mass and internal thread parameters was established by fitting the maximum effective stress of the slow-release structure. This led to good prediction results. In conclusion, this study provides references and theoretical support for the design of thermal protection structures insensitive to ammunition.
