Abstract:In response to the need for weight reduction of transport systems, such as motor vehicles and railway rolling stock, recent years have seen aluminising of structural materials, application of sheet metal to steel structures, and downgauging of such materials continuing apace. Such welded structures consisting of thin base metals, readily deform, often forming gaps in joints. During DC pulsed MIG arc welding with wire electrode plus polarity, it is found that, if measures are taken to maintain the amount of deposited metal necessary to submerge joint gaps, the heat input increases, and melt-through occurs. It is, therefore, difficult to establish compatibility between gap tolerance assurance and melt-through prevention.
