Abstract:Hardened and tempered ultrahigh strength steels are new generation materials that show strengths exceeding 2100 MPa tensile strength with reasonable ductility for applications such as springs. It is possible to reduce the thickness of the steel and enable light weighting components with ultra-high strengths. Hardened and tempered steel with a 0.45%C steel with 2%Si–0.8%Mn–0.75Cr–0.2%Ni, microalloyed with 0.1%V, gave a 2 GPa steels with 10% elongation. Hardening from a temperature of 870 °C and tempering at 350 °C, the best property of 2124 MPa tensile strength with 14% elongation and 37% reduction in area is achieved. Hardening from 930 °C and tempering at 300 °C, the highest tensile strength of 2155 MPa with 12% elongation and 36% reduction in area is achieved. The structure and property correlation are brought out in the study. The steel was strengthened by a lath martensite matrix with dispersion of ε-carbide and (V, Ti)4C3 precipitation and finer grains obtained by Al and the residual carbides.
