Abstract:Thiophene (C 4 H 4 S) removal from coke oven gas is critical to its subsequent high valuable utilization but remains a challenge. MOF-199 was considered as a promising candidate for C 4 H 4 S adsorption removal owing to its nature of enriched opened Cu sites. However, the presence of mixed valence of Cu(II) and Cu(I) in MOF-199 makes it puzzling to their respective contribution to the removal of C 4 H 4 S. Herein, a series of MOF-199 with different Cu(I) contents were synthesized using different methods, including hydrothermal, solution diffusion, and ultrasonic, and their C 4 H 4 S adsorption performance were investigated. The respective contributions of Cu(II) and Cu(I) to the C 4 H 4 S removal was systematically discussed. The collected results indicated that although the samples prepared with different methods present a remarkable difference in textural characters, the latter was found to have a negligible influence on the C 4 H 4 S removal owing to MOF-199(H) affording an inferior surface area and pore volumes but performing the best C 4 H 4 S removal capacity of 53.7 mg S/g. The co-adsorption results of CH 3 SCH 3 and C 4 H 4 S indicated that the excellent performance of MOF-199(H) mainly attributed to the presence of Cu(I), which provides active sites for C 4 H 4 S adsorption through π complex coordination. Cu(II) species was also found to the C 4 H 4 S adsorption via soft-acid-base coordinated interaction, but its contribution is 8.3 mg S/g, only accounting for 15.5 %. Additionally, the adsorption of C 4 H 4 S on MOF-199(H) was found to follow the intra-particle diffusion model and the Langmuir models. Moreover, MOF-199(H) also exhibited an excellent regeneration performance due to the weak interaction between C 4 H 4 S and their opened Cu sites, the C 4 H 4 S adsorption capacity still reaches 50.6 mg S/g after three regeneration cycles, about 94 % of its initial value. The results collected in this study will provide new insights for the manipulation of performance of C 4 H 4 S adsorption on the MOF-199.

Abstract:A single metal-organic framework (MOF) exhibits some drawbacks in deep adsorptive desulfurization such as insufficient functional active sites, water instability, low surface area, etc. Herein, a dual-amino-functionalized (ZIF-8-NH2)-PVP-(Cu-BTC-NH2) core-shell dual MOF adsorbent was first synthesized by the hydrothermal growth method. The adsorption performance of thiophene sulfur (ThS) is systematically investigated and evaluated at mild temperatures through batch tests. The (ZIF-8-NH2)-PVP-(Cu-BTC-NH2) exhibits good adsorption ability toward ThS, which is attributed to the associative effects of dual MOFs with structure features such as hydrogen bond, open metal active sites, suitable pore sizes and π-π conjugation, etc. Meanwhile, the (ZIF-8-NH2)-PVP-(Cu-BTC-NH2) embedded 25 wt % water still remains crystal intact and good adsorption desulfurization performance, which is attributed to the NH2- functional groups. After five recycles, more than 90% ThS uptake onto (ZIF-8-NH2)-PVP-(Cu-BTC-NH2) could be recovered, exhibiting good reuse performance. This study presents a new strategy for grafting MOF-on-MOF with specific functional groups to improve the abilities of desulfurization and water resistance.

Efficient adsorptive removal of dibenzothiophene from model fuels by encapsulated of Cu+ and phosphotungstic acid (PTA) in Co-MOF

Abstract:Co-containing materials have raised much concern in adsorption desulfurization due to its unsaturated metal sites. Herein, we introduced Cu+ and phosphotungstic acid (PTA) to Co-MOF to prepare Co-MOF-Cu+/PTA through post-modification method under mild condition, and then Co-MOF-Cu+/PTA were used for adsorption and removal dibenzothiophene (DBT) from model fuels. The physico-chemical property of adsorbents was characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), NH3-temperature programmed desorption (NH3-TPD), and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The ICP-MS and EDX characterization results showed that Cu+ had been uniformly dispersed on the Co-MOF-Cu+/PTA. The NH3-TPD demonstrated that the PTA could enhance surface acidity of the Co-MOF-Cu+/PTA. Due to the introduction of Cu+ and PTA, the adsorption capacity of the Co-MOF-Cu+/PTA for DBT was much greater than Co-MOF. The Cu+ ions served as active sites for π-π interaction and sulfur-metal (S-M) adsorption, meanwhile the Co2+ and PTA adsorbed DBT through acid-base interaction. The adsorption capacity of Co-MOF-Cu+/PTA for DBT could reach 188.7 mg/g. The adsorption behavior was spontaneous and endothermic, and be well fitted by Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic. The Co-MOF-Cu+/PTA had excellent selectivity and regeneration performance.

Abstract:In this study, a facile strategy is reported for the preparation of porous carbon materials with adjustable pore size through carbonization of MOF-5 at 900 degrees C with the assistance of different additives. Results show that the physical and chemical properties (such as morphology, carbon defect content, BET specific surface area, pore structure) of the porous carbon materials can be adjusted through introduction of different compounds (i.e., C16H32O2, C6H14O6, C18H36O2, Na2CO3, KOH, Cu(NO3)2, NaCl, KCl, MgCl2, ethyl cellulose) during the carbon-ization processes. CO2 adsorption experiment results show that there is a linear relationship between the CO2 adsorption capacity (at 25 degrees C and 0.15 bar) and the cumulative pore volume of pores at 5-7 angstrom, suggesting that pores in the range of 5-7 angstrom play a major role in CO2 adsorption at such condition. While the CO2 adsorption capacity (at 25 degrees C and 0.15 bar) is independent on the BET specific surface area of the materials. Among the prepared porous carbon materials, 5C-C6H14O6-900 exhibits the highest CO2 adsorption capacity (i.e., 3.32 mmol/g at 25 degrees C and 1 bar, 0.88 mmol/g at 25 degrees C and 0.15 bar), with good adsorption/desorption cycle stability and CO2/N2 selectivity. Our work provides a facile and general method to adjust and control the pore size dis-tribution of MOF-derived porous carbon materials. Besides, the analysis results indicate that the micropores in a specific pore size range play a decisive role in the adsorption of CO2 at low pressure, which provides a new idea for the preparation of high-efficiency adsorbents at low pressures.
Fe3O4@C Core-Shell Carbon Hybrid Materials as Magnetically Separable Adsorbents for the Removal of Dibenzothiophene in Fuels

Abstract:Herein, we demonstrate a new class of core-shell magnetic carbon hybrid materials (Fe3O4@C) for remarkable adsorptive desulfurization of dibenzothiophene (DBT), which have been successfully prepared through hydrocarbonization of glucose on the surface of Fe3O4 and the subsequent pyrolyzation process. The as-obtained Fe3O4@C retains amorphous nature of carbon shells with a large surface area and displays an increase of iron atoms as active sites under elevated pyrolyzation temperature which is favorable in the adsorption of sulfur-containing species through physical and chemical adsorption, respectively. We investigate the adsorption capacity and efficiency of Fe3O4@C as a magnetically adsorbent for the removal of DBT in model oils under various experimental conditions including the adsorbent obtained at different temperatures, the amount of adsorbents, the DBT initial concentration, the regeneration approach, as well as the interference species. Our results demonstrated that the as-obtained Fe3O4@C at 650 °C (Fe3O4@C-650) displays a remarkable estimated adsorption performance (57.5 mg DBT/g for 200 ppmw), extraordinary high desulfurization efficiency (99% for 200 ppmw), and a high selectivity for DBT compared with its derivatives. Moreover, Fe3O4@C can be recovered in a quite easy, economical, and eco-friendly manner by an external magnet after five cycles without significant weight loss, which significantly simplifies the operation procedure and favors the recycle of Fe3O4@C. Combined with the economic and eco-friendly merits, Fe3O4@C offers a new avenue to employ the magnetic carbon materials for industrial applications and provides a promising substitute for adsorptive desulfurization in view of academic, industrial, and environmental aspects.
Synthesis and Adsorption Desulfurization Performance of Modified Mesoporous Silica Materials M-MCM-41 (M = Fe, Co, Zn)

Abstract:Adsorption desulfurization is a potential new method for deep desulfurization of fuel oil. The development of adsorbents with high adsorption capacity and selectivity is the core of deep adsorption desulfurization. The adsorption behavior of thiophene in MCM-41 mesoporous materials modified by various metal ions was studied in order to understand the adsorption desulfurization process of molecular sieves. The Fe-, Co-, and Zn-modified MCM-41 materials were prepared using a one-step in situ hydrothermal synthesis method. The modified MCM-41 molecular sieves maintained the mesoporous structure, and the metal ions had specific dispersion on the surface of the molecular sieves. Adsorption of thiophene on the surfaces of molecular sieves had both physical and chemical characteristics. The adsorption desulfurization performance of the modified molecular sieve was superior to that of the pure silica molecular sieve. In the simulated gasoline with sulfur content of 220 μg/g, when the amount of adsorbent used was 100 mg, the adsorptive desulfurization performance tended to be in equilibrium, and the optimum adsorption temperature was 30°C. Fe-MCM-41 and MCM-41 molecular sieves reached adsorption equilibrium after ~60 min, but the desulfurization rate of Co-MCM-41 and Zn-MCM-41 still increased slightly. The kinetic simulation results indicated that the pseudo-second-order kinetics adsorption model described well the adsorption process of thiophene on molecular sieves. The molecular sieve Fe-MCM-41 had the best desulfurization performance with an equilibrium adsorption capacity of 14.02 mg/g and the desulfurization rate was ~90%.

Abstract:The adsorption desulfurization (ADS) is a promising technology for deep removing thiophene-type sulfurs, yet it remains challenges in maintaining good performance for real applications in the presence of water. Guided by theoretical calculations, we constructed hydrophobic selective channels by crosslinking porous aromatic framework (PAF) of PAF-56 on the surface of adsorbent MOF-199 with Cu nodes reduced. The optimized Cu(I)-BTC@PAF30 shows a high saturated dibenzothiophenes (DBT) adsorption capacity of 61.7 mgS g−1 from the dehydrated model oil. Attributed to the good DBT-affinity (with binding energy (BE) of −90.52 KJ mol−1) and water-repulsion (with BE of −14.72 KJ mol−1), PAF-56 coating layer significantly improves the hydrophobicity, and keeps the DBT adsorption capacity as high as 50.8 mgS g−1 in the presence of 0.5% (v/v) water, the decline of 17.6% was much smaller than the dramatical 70.9% decrease in pristine Cu(I)-BTC. More importantly, it effectively prevents Cu(I) nodes from the oxidation, and exhibits a superior stable cyclic performance with the removal efficiency above 91% after 20 cycles. Therefore, Cu(I)-BTC@PAF30 can be a good representative of this surface modification strategy to achieve promising application in industrial ADS.

Abstract:Adsorption of stubborn sulfides from fuels is a feasible desulfurization strategy to obtain clean fuels, however, the exploration of efficient adsorbents to achieve this target remains a formidable challenge. Here, a hybrid nanocomposite comprising carbon-doped boron nitride (BN) and ZIF-8 derived carbon was constructed through a facile one-pot pyrolysis method. Thanks to the hierarchical porous structure and more exposed Lewis acid sites, the obtained adsorbent gave remarkable desulfurization performance for dibenzothiophene (DBT, 35.6 mg S/g), which was superior to that of the state-of-the-art carbon-doped BN reported under similar conditions so far. Moreover, the as-prepared absorbent exhibited impressive adsorptive capacity for 4-methyldibenzothiophene (4-MDBT) and 4,6-dimethyldibenzothiophene (4,6-DMDBT). Therefore, the BN-C hybrid materials presented here hold great promise for adsorptive desulfurization, as well as other related fields.

A novel Cu2O/palygorskite composite for advanced adsorption desulfurization

Abstract:In this work, a composite material for the adsorption removal of thiophenic sulfur compounds (TSCs) was prepared by loading Cu2O onto palygorskite using a simple and low‐cost impregnation method and characterized for its structure and morphology. The addition of Cu2O did not change palygorskite's structure, and the Cu+ was evenly dispersed in the palygorskite fibers. The palygorskite provided the adsorptive active centers Cu+ efficient surface and pore structure to increase the sulfur removal performance of palygorskite. The optimum desulfurization process conditions of the Cu2O/palygorskite were obtained experimentally and by response surface methodology. With solid/liquid mass ratio of 1/100 and temperature of 30°C, the maximum static adsorption capacity of the Cu2O/palygorskite in model oil, which was composed of n‐octane and a single TSC at 400 mg S/L, showed an increase of 639% for thiophene, 543% for benzothiophene, and 563% for dibenzothiophene compared to palygorskite alone. In addition, the pseudo‐second‐order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm model exhibited the most fitting results for thiophene adsorbing on the composite, indicating that chemisorption on a monolayer basis plays a key role in the adsorption process. To sum up, these results suggest the composite has some potential in the field of adsorption‐desulfurization materials.

Abstract:The governance of sulfur dioxide emissions in the atmosphere is a global challenge. Herein, a three-dimensional ultramicroporous porous organic framework named TAM-POF with high surface areas, abundant accessible N sites and suitable pore size was synthesized for elimination of SO2 in flue gases and aromatic sulfides in liquid fuels. The adsorption and separation performance of TAM-POF is investigated by equilibrium gas adsorption, instant adsorption rates and column breakthrough experiments. A record-high SO2 dynamic adsorption capacity of 2.92 mmol g−1 in ternary gas mixture (0.5/10/89.5, v/v/v, SO2/CO2/N2) and SO2/CO2 (1 2 4) and 3-methylthiophene/n-octane (42) selectivities were achieved in TAM-POF. The strong interaction between adsorbents and TAM-POF, as well as appropriate pore apertures are the main reason for their excellent desulfurization performance, which are also evidenced by theory simulation.
Enhancing Adsorption Desulfurization Performance Using Enriched Cu(I) Sites over Microenvironment‐Modulated HKUST‐1

Abstract:Molecular engineering of Cu(II)‐based metal‐organic frameworks (Cu‐MOFs) using Ce ions as a molecular scalpel fabricates abundant Cu(I) and Cu‐coordination‐unsaturated sites, enhancing the adsorption performance of Cu‐MOFs for adsorbing aromatic sulfur‐containing compounds from liquid hydrocarbon fuels. High‐efficiency adsorption of aromatic sulfur‐containing compounds from liquid hydrocarbon fuels over metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs) is challenging because of inert metal sites. A new method, the Ce‐enhanced modulation of MOFs' microenvironment, is proposed to modulate the –COO···Cu(II)– coordination microenvironment of Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST‐1) using Ce(III) as a molecular scalpel for fabricating abundant high‐efficiency Cu(I) and Cu‐coordination‐unsaturated sites and improving the pore structures around adsorptive sites. The optimal CH‐250 thus exhibits adsorptive capacities for 20.2, 28.0, and 58.3 mg S g–1 of thiophene, benzo‐thiophene, and dibenzothiophene, respectively, which are superior to most reported MOFs, zeolites, and nanoporous carbons. The constructed Cu(I) sites show stronger affinity for dibenzothiophene (−0.86 eV) than the initial Cu(II) (−0.74 eV) for out‐of‐plane adsorption. Further, they are far stronger in‐plane adsorption interactions in DBT/CH‐250 (−0.90 eV) than those in DBT/HKUST‐1 (−0.37 eV). Thus, molecular engineering for modulating the coordination microenvironment of MOFs shows great potential for adsorption desulfurization.

New Type Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Material Applied to Deep Adsorption Desulfurization

Abstract:In this research, we have prepared a new type of multistage aperture nitrogen-doped carbon materials [CN-x, (x = 600, 700, 800, 900, 1000)] by one-step carbonization at different calcination temperatures. The structure of the CN-x is characterized by X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller, Scanning electron microscopy, and Raman spectroscopy. The effects of pore structure, nitrogen morphology, and defects on the adsorption properties are analyzed. We have also studied the desulfurization activity of CN-x for dibenzothiophene (DBT). Experimental data show that CN-900 has very good adsorption desulfurization activity, exhibiting a theoretical Langmuir adsorption capacity of up to 37.28 mg/g. When the DBT concentration is 100 ppm, CN-900 reaches a DBT removal rate of over 99%. The effects of calcination temperature and nitrogen content on the adsorption properties of the CN-x are examined. The experimental results show that the nitrogen content is positively correlated with the adsorption performance. The cheap and readily available d-(+)-glucosamine hydrochloride is used as the precursor of the CN-x, and the adsorbent prepared by a simple one-step carbonization method has good application prospects in the desulfurization process.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:An ultraporous metal–organic framework (MOF)-based carbon nanofiber mat (CNFM4) with two types of hollow structure was prepared by electrospinning the mixed solution with polyacrylonitrile, polymethyl methacrylate and ZIF-8, followed by carbonization. The self-supporting CNFM4 has a higher Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) specific surface area (S BET ) (935.5 m 2 /g) and total pore volume (V total ) (0.69 cm 3 g −1 ) than the PAN, PAN/PMMA, PAN/ZIF-8-derived carbon nanofiber mats (CNFMs). Static adsorption experiment showed CNFM4 had a high benzene adsorption capacity of about 12 mmol g −1 at saturated vapor pressure at 298 K, due to its high V total . And even at low pressure of 0.1 kPa, its adsorption capacity still reached 2.75 mmol g −1 , owing to its high S BET and rich micropore. The dynamic adsorption study showed CNFM4 has a breakthrough and saturation adsorption amount of 0.4902 and 0.5714 mmol g −1 at dry gas, respectively, and even at 60 RH%, they still can keep 0.2620 and 0.3642 mmol g −1 , respectively, suggesting its application potential under the actual environment. The dynamic adsorption study also proves the important role of hollow structure at improving adsorption rate. This work provides a new idea for preparing the ultraporous MOF-based hollow CNFMs, and broadens the application of MOF-based CNFMs for VOCs removal.

Abstract:A bimetallic–organic porous material (Cu/Co-BTC) with a paddle-wheel structure has been successfully synthesized by a solvothermal approach. The as-synthesized materials were characterized by XRD, SEM, ICP-AES, UV-Vis, TGA and N 2 adsorption at 77 K. The prepared Cu/Co-BTC samples were investigated in thiophene (TP) adsorption from model gasolines by the fixed bed adsorption method at 298 K. The results showed that only a small amount of Co could be successfully introduced into the framework of HKUST-1, and the introduction of Co had little effect on the crystalline structure, morphology, porosity, and thermal stability. The bimetallic Cu/Co-BTC with a Cu/Co ratio of 174 displayed significantly improved adsorption desulfurization performance, showing an increase in breakthrough volume by 30% compared with HKUST-1, implying that the central metal in the MOF plays an important role in adsorption desulfurization. The addition of toluene or cyclohexene (3.20–3.30 vol%) as a competitor in the model gasoline led to a decline in desulfurization performance, especially when cyclohexene was added. The bimetallic Cu/Co-BTC showed a slight loss in breakthrough volume by only 5% after regenerating 7 times, displaying an excellent regeneration property.

Novel Hierarchical Fe(III)-Doped Cu-MOFs With Enhanced Adsorption of Benzene Vapor

Abstract:New hierarchical Fe(III)-doped Cu-MOFs (Fe-HK) were developed via introduction of Fe3+ ions during HKUST-1 synthesis. The obtained products were characterized by N2 adsorption, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, FTIR spectroscopy, and thermal analysis. The adsorption isotherms and kinetics of benzene vapor were measured and consecutive adsorption–desorption cycles were performed. It was found that the hierarchical-pore Fe-HK-2 exhibited optimal textural properties with high BET surface area of 1,707 m2/g and total pore volume of 0.93 cm3/g, which were higher than those of the unmodified HKUST-1. Significantly, the hierarchical-pore Fe-HK-2 possessed outstanding benzene adsorption capacity, which was 1.5 times greater than the value on HKUST-1. Benzene diffusivity of Fe-HK-2 was 1.7 times faster than that of parent HKUST-1. Furthermore, the benzene adsorption on Fe-HK-2 was highly reversible. The hierarchical-pore Fe-HK-2 with high porosity, outstanding adsorption capacity, enhanced diffusion rate, and excellent reversibility might be an attractive candidate for VOCs adsorption. This may offer a simple and effective strategy to synthesize hierarchical-pore MOFs by doping with other metal ions.

Abstract:Rational elemental doping and structural construction of carbonaceous absorbents is an efficient technique for removal of sulfide from oil. In this line, a novel N, P co-doped porous carbon network (NPC) was reported for the first time to removal of dibenzothiophene (DBT). By adjusting the carbonization temperature, a series of hierarchical porous carbons with large specific surface area and high heteroatom content are obtained. As the absorbent, the optimal NPC presents a superior sulfur adsorption capacity of 63.32 mg/g, a 90% retention of initial performance after six cycles, and a excellent selectivity for DBT removal. The in-depth analysis indicates that the unique micro-mesoporous structure ensures the shape-selective adsorption and accelerates the transport of DBT. More importantly, a large number of formed N-P bonds act as the adsorption active sites to enhance the adsorption strength for DBT. Density functional theory (DFT) calculation reveals that the synergistic effect of N, P co-doped configurations greatly reduces the adsorption energy for DBT, indicating its significant affinity to DBT. In additioin, based on the kinetic and thermodynamic analysis, it is found that the DBT adsorption of NPCs fits into the pseudo second-order kinetic and Langmuir models, revealing the spontaneous adsorption at room temperature. This present work offers a new strategy to synthesize the highly effecient adsorbent for adsorption desulfurizatioin.

Abstract:Due to its unique porosity, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have great application prospects in the fields of gas adsorption and separation. However, the synthesis of multi-functional MOFs is still a great challenge. Herein, a multi-functional Cu-MOF of {[Cu 2 (TPTA)(H 2 O) 2 ]·2DMF·NMP·4H 2 O}n with a porosity of 62.0 % was designed and synthesized. The H 2 adsorption amount of Cu-MOF is about 289.2 cm 3 g −1 at 77 K and 1 bar. Meanwhile, the selectivity adsorption of Cu-MOF towards CO 2 over CH 4 (V:V = 0.5:0.5), CO 2 /N 2 (V:V = 0.5:0.5) and CO 2 /H 2 (V:V = 0.5:0.5) is 95.1, 139.2 and 147.5, respectively, which is 1.5 times higher than the previously reported Cu-MOFs. The Cu-MOF@NF//AC asymmetric supercapacitor demonstrates high specific capacitance (53.4 F g −1 ) and stability (90.3 % after 2000 cycles). Furthermore, this work presents a novel approach to design multifunctional materials with low temperature hydrogen storage, gas separation and energy storage properties.

Abstract:MOF-199 is one of the well-studied metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) for the capture of small gas molecules. In this study, we have investigated the thermal transformation of MOF-199 microrods to CuO nanoparticles by various microscopic and spectroscopic techniques. The growth of oxide was initiated by the formation of ∼2.5 nm particles at 200 °C, which ended up as CuO nanoparticles of ∼100–250 nm size at 550 °C. An intermediate presence of Cu2O along with CuO was recorded at 280 °C. The MOF and calcined products were tested for the room-temperature desulfurization process. MOF-199 showed the maximum adsorption capacity for H2S gas (77.1 mg g–1) among all adsorbents studied. Also, MOF-199 showed a better regeneration efficiency than the derived oxide. For a sustainable process, the exhausted adsorbents were used for the photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue. The exhausted materials showed better degradation efficiencies than the fresh materials. This study reports new sustainable approaches for MOF-199 application in air and water decontamination.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.
