Abstract:A bimetallic–organic porous material (Cu/Co-BTC) with a paddle-wheel structure has been successfully synthesized by a solvothermal approach. The as-synthesized materials were characterized by XRD, SEM, ICP-AES, UV-Vis, TGA and N 2 adsorption at 77 K. The prepared Cu/Co-BTC samples were investigated in thiophene (TP) adsorption from model gasolines by the fixed bed adsorption method at 298 K. The results showed that only a small amount of Co could be successfully introduced into the framework of HKUST-1, and the introduction of Co had little effect on the crystalline structure, morphology, porosity, and thermal stability. The bimetallic Cu/Co-BTC with a Cu/Co ratio of 174 displayed significantly improved adsorption desulfurization performance, showing an increase in breakthrough volume by 30% compared with HKUST-1, implying that the central metal in the MOF plays an important role in adsorption desulfurization. The addition of toluene or cyclohexene (3.20–3.30 vol%) as a competitor in the model gasoline led to a decline in desulfurization performance, especially when cyclohexene was added. The bimetallic Cu/Co-BTC showed a slight loss in breakthrough volume by only 5% after regenerating 7 times, displaying an excellent regeneration property.

Abstract:This work investigates the adsorption of organosulfur compounds in model fuels over metal organic frameworks (MOFs) using a combined experimental/computational approach. Adsorption isotherms of three MOFs, MIL-101(Cr), MIL-100(Fe), and Cu-BTC, follow the Langmuir isotherm models, and Cu-BTC shows the highest adsorption capacity for both dibenzothiophene (DBT) and 4,6-dimethyldibenzothiophene (4,6-DMDBT), ascribing to the highest density of adsorption sites and fairly strong adsorption sites on Cu-BTC. Experimental results show adsorption selectivity of various compounds in model fuels follows the order of quinoline (Qu) > indole (In) > DBT > 4,6-DMDBT > naphthalene (Nap), which is consistent with the order of calculated binding energies. Adsorption capacities of thiophenic compounds decrease significantly with the introduction of Qu, In, or water due to their strong competitive adsorptions over the coordinatively unsaturated Cu sites on Cu-BTC. The binding energies of Qu, In, H2O, and DBT are calculated as -56.04, -41.01, -50.27, and -27.52 kJ/mol, respectively. The experimental and computational results together suggest that the adsorption strength of thiophenic compounds over Cu-BTC is dominated by the interaction of both the conjugated pi system (pi-M) and the lone pair of electrons on sulfur atom (sigma-M) of thiophenes, with the coordinatively unsaturated sites (CUS) on Cu-BTC. Alkyl groups on 4- and/or 6-positions of thiophenic compounds function as both eletron donor to increase sigma-M interaction and steric inhibitor to decrease (sigma-M interaction. MOFs with strong and highly dense CUS can be promising materials for ADS of fuels.

Abstract:Molecular engineering of Cu(II)‐based metal‐organic frameworks (Cu‐MOFs) using Ce ions as a molecular scalpel fabricates abundant Cu(I) and Cu‐coordination‐unsaturated sites, enhancing the adsorption performance of Cu‐MOFs for adsorbing aromatic sulfur‐containing compounds from liquid hydrocarbon fuels. High‐efficiency adsorption of aromatic sulfur‐containing compounds from liquid hydrocarbon fuels over metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs) is challenging because of inert metal sites. A new method, the Ce‐enhanced modulation of MOFs' microenvironment, is proposed to modulate the –COO···Cu(II)– coordination microenvironment of Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST‐1) using Ce(III) as a molecular scalpel for fabricating abundant high‐efficiency Cu(I) and Cu‐coordination‐unsaturated sites and improving the pore structures around adsorptive sites. The optimal CH‐250 thus exhibits adsorptive capacities for 20.2, 28.0, and 58.3 mg S g–1 of thiophene, benzo‐thiophene, and dibenzothiophene, respectively, which are superior to most reported MOFs, zeolites, and nanoporous carbons. The constructed Cu(I) sites show stronger affinity for dibenzothiophene (−0.86 eV) than the initial Cu(II) (−0.74 eV) for out‐of‐plane adsorption. Further, they are far stronger in‐plane adsorption interactions in DBT/CH‐250 (−0.90 eV) than those in DBT/HKUST‐1 (−0.37 eV). Thus, molecular engineering for modulating the coordination microenvironment of MOFs shows great potential for adsorption desulfurization.

Abstract:Highly selective adsorption capacity is critical for meeting the challenge of deep removal of thiophene-based sulfurs from oil. How to regulate the active metal sites in metal organic frameworks (MOFs) to enhance the adsorption performance have been long sought after. Herein, the open metal sites with higher valence state are successfully constructed in bimetallic organic frameworks of MIL-47(xV/Cr)-Brs. The density function theory calculations and the spectra analysis reveal that not only the enhanced Metal-S and π-π interactions, but also the H-Bond between μ 2 -OH and S of thiophene synergistically improve the desulfurization performance, resulting in excellent capacity of 256 mgS g −1 and high selectivity of thiophene/aromatics. Even in a harsh operation condition of water presence in oil, MIL-47(2V/Cr)-Br maintains its superior capacity, exceeding all the reported works so far as we know. More significantly, the continue flow desulfurization from the commercial oil further demonstrate the advantages of bimetallic MOF in the practical adsorptive desulfurization, which may pave a way for understanding and designing novel hetero-metallic sorbents for adsorption and separation.

Abstract:Bimetallic metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have shown more impressive performance in gas adsorption compared with monometallic MOFs. Herein, a Cu-Zn bimetallic metal-organic framework (Zn/Cu-BTC) was synthesized via a one-pot method, and its structure, thermal stability and CO2 adsorption property were investigated and compared with those of corresponding monometallic Cu-BTC and Zn-BTC. The results showed that Zn/Cu-BTC has a specific ortho-octahedral crystal morphology with a unique X-ray diffraction peak, the atomic ratio of Zn to Cu is about 1 : 5, and it remained stable at a temperature up to 490 K. In Zn/Cu-BTC, Cu2+ played a role in increasing the specific surface area and porosity of the MOF and improving the gas adsorption performance. The CO2 adsorption of Zn/Cu-BTC is lower than that of Cu-BTC but much higher than that of Zn-BTC, and CO2 adsorption heat was 30.52 kJ mol-1, which indicated physical adsorption. In addition, Zn/Cu-BTC had higher CO2/N2 adsorption selectivity compared with Zn-BTC and Cu-BTC, with a maximum value of 17. This study can be a reference for the research on improving the adsorption selectivity of gases by constructing bimetallic MOFs.
Cu-doped BCN nanofibers for highly selective adsorption desulfurization through S-Cu coordination and π-π interaction

Abstract:Boron carbon nitride (BCN) has emerged as an effective material owing to its high specific surface area, porous structure, and excellent chemical inertness. However, the existing BCN adsorbents for adsorption desulfurization (ADS) exhibit inferior adsorption capacity and selectivity. Herein, a series of novel BCN nanofibers doped with Cu(I) adsorption sites (BCN-Cu-X, X = 0.02, 0.04, 0.06, 0.08 mmol) were fabricated via a simple one-pot pyrolysis method derived from a carboxylic acid copper coordination compound. The results demonstrated that BCN-Cu-0.04 shows a remarkably increased adsorption capacity for dibenzothiophene (DBT) about 33% higher than BCN under the same conditions. It is also noteworthy to mention that BCN-Cu-0.04 presents high ADS performance even for the refractory sulfur compound 4,6-Dimethyldibenzothiophene (4,6-DMDBT, 42.2 mg S/g adsorbent). Furthermore, density functional theory (DFT) calculations proved that the enhanced performance of BCN-Cu-X in ADS is attributed to the π-π interaction and newly formed sulfur-copper (S-Cu) coordination bond, which is different from other Cu-based adsorbents. This study may inspire the development of new synthetic routes which are possible to realize high-efficiency and high-selectivity ADS.

Abstract:The complex [Zn2(tdc)2dabco] (H2tdc = thiophene-2,5-dicarboxylic acid; dabco = 1,4-diazabicyclooctane) shows a remarkable increase in carbon dioxide (CO2) uptake and CO2/dinitrogen (N2) selectivity compared to the nonthiophene analogue [Zn2(bdc)2dabco] (H2bdc = benzene-1,4-dicarboxylic acid; terephthalic acid). CO2 adsorption at 1 bar for [Zn2(tdc)2dabco] is 67.4 cm3·g-1 (13.2 wt %) at 298 K and 153 cm3·g-1 (30.0 wt %) at 273 K. For [Zn2(bdc)2dabco], the equivalent values are 46 cm3·g-1 (9.0 wt %) and 122 cm3·g-1 (23.9 wt %), respectively. The isosteric heat of adsorption for CO2 in [Zn2(tdc)2dabco] at zero coverage is low (23.65 kJ·mol-1), ensuring facile regeneration of the porous material. Enhancement by the thiophene group on the separation of CO2/N2 gas mixtures has been confirmed by both ideal adsorbate solution theory calculations and dynamic breakthrough experiments. The preferred binding sites of adsorbed CO2 in [Zn2(tdc)2dabco] have been unambiguously determined by in situ single-crystal diffraction studies on CO2-loaded [Zn2(tdc)2dabco], coupled with quantum-chemical calculations. These studies unveil the role of the thiophene moieties in the specific CO2 binding via an induced dipole interaction between CO2 and the sulfur center, confirming that an enhanced CO2 capacity in [Zn2(tdc)2dabco] is achieved without the presence of open metal sites. The experimental data and theoretical insight suggest a viable strategy for improvement of the adsorption properties of already known materials through the incorporation of sulfur-based heterocycles within their porous structures.

Abstract:Three zinc-trimesic acid (Zn-BTC) MOFs, BIT-101, BIT-102 and BIT-103, have been synthesized via a structure-directing strategy. Interestingly, BIT-102 and -103 exhibit extraordinary catalytic performance (up to Conv. 100% and Sele. 95.2%) in the cycloaddition of CO2 under solvent-and halogen-free conditions without any additives or co-catalysts.

Abstract:Adsorption of stubborn sulfides from fuels is a feasible desulfurization strategy to obtain clean fuels, however, the exploration of efficient adsorbents to achieve this target remains a formidable challenge. Here, a hybrid nanocomposite comprising carbon-doped boron nitride (BN) and ZIF-8 derived carbon was constructed through a facile one-pot pyrolysis method. Thanks to the hierarchical porous structure and more exposed Lewis acid sites, the obtained adsorbent gave remarkable desulfurization performance for dibenzothiophene (DBT, 35.6 mg S/g), which was superior to that of the state-of-the-art carbon-doped BN reported under similar conditions so far. Moreover, the as-prepared absorbent exhibited impressive adsorptive capacity for 4-methyldibenzothiophene (4-MDBT) and 4,6-dimethyldibenzothiophene (4,6-DMDBT). Therefore, the BN-C hybrid materials presented here hold great promise for adsorptive desulfurization, as well as other related fields.

Abstract:The adsorption desulfurization (ADS) is a promising technology for deep removing thiophene-type sulfurs, yet it remains challenges in maintaining good performance for real applications in the presence of water. Guided by theoretical calculations, we constructed hydrophobic selective channels by crosslinking porous aromatic framework (PAF) of PAF-56 on the surface of adsorbent MOF-199 with Cu nodes reduced. The optimized Cu(I)-BTC@PAF30 shows a high saturated dibenzothiophenes (DBT) adsorption capacity of 61.7 mgS g−1 from the dehydrated model oil. Attributed to the good DBT-affinity (with binding energy (BE) of −90.52 KJ mol−1) and water-repulsion (with BE of −14.72 KJ mol−1), PAF-56 coating layer significantly improves the hydrophobicity, and keeps the DBT adsorption capacity as high as 50.8 mgS g−1 in the presence of 0.5% (v/v) water, the decline of 17.6% was much smaller than the dramatical 70.9% decrease in pristine Cu(I)-BTC. More importantly, it effectively prevents Cu(I) nodes from the oxidation, and exhibits a superior stable cyclic performance with the removal efficiency above 91% after 20 cycles. Therefore, Cu(I)-BTC@PAF30 can be a good representative of this surface modification strategy to achieve promising application in industrial ADS.

Abstract:Three three-dimensional (3D) metal-organic frameworks [M 2 (ttdc) 2 (dabco)] (М = Zn(II), 1-Zn ; Cu(II), 1-Cu ; Zn/Cu, 1-ZnCu ) based on thieno[3,2-b]thiophene-2,5-dicarboxylate (ttdc 2– ) were synthesized and characterized by a complex of physicochemical methods (single crystal X-ray diffraction, powder X-ray diffraction, chemical, thermogravimetric analyses and IR spectroscopy). 1-Cu demonstrated permanent porosity (V pore = 0.790 cm 3 ·g –1 , S BET = 1725 m 2 ⋅g −1 ) and significant CO 2 , CH 4 , C 2 H 2 , C 2 H 4 and C 2 H 6 gas uptakes at ambient conditions. The adsorption selectivities for gas mixtures, calculated by IAST, were 10.8 (10.7), 14.6 (9.4), 1.7 (1.6) and 1.5 (1.6) for the equimolar gas mixture composition CO 2 /N 2 , C 2 H 6 /CH 4 , C 2 H 6 /C 2 H 4 and C 2 H 6 /C 2 H 2 at 1 bar and 273 K (298 K), respectively. The mixed-metal compound 1-ZnCu was prepared by a crystal-to-crystal ion exchange metathesis reaction from 1-Zn with 52% degree of ion substitution, confirmed by the energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, optical microcopy and single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis.

Abstract:A single metal-organic framework (MOF) exhibits some drawbacks in deep adsorptive desulfurization such as insufficient functional active sites, water instability, low surface area, etc. Herein, a dual-amino-functionalized (ZIF-8-NH2)-PVP-(Cu-BTC-NH2) core-shell dual MOF adsorbent was first synthesized by the hydrothermal growth method. The adsorption performance of thiophene sulfur (ThS) is systematically investigated and evaluated at mild temperatures through batch tests. The (ZIF-8-NH2)-PVP-(Cu-BTC-NH2) exhibits good adsorption ability toward ThS, which is attributed to the associative effects of dual MOFs with structure features such as hydrogen bond, open metal active sites, suitable pore sizes and π-π conjugation, etc. Meanwhile, the (ZIF-8-NH2)-PVP-(Cu-BTC-NH2) embedded 25 wt % water still remains crystal intact and good adsorption desulfurization performance, which is attributed to the NH2- functional groups. After five recycles, more than 90% ThS uptake onto (ZIF-8-NH2)-PVP-(Cu-BTC-NH2) could be recovered, exhibiting good reuse performance. This study presents a new strategy for grafting MOF-on-MOF with specific functional groups to improve the abilities of desulfurization and water resistance.

Abstract:Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) are excellent adsorbents that provide abundant specific surface area, adjustable pore structure, and rich active sites. The purpose of this study was to prepare composites with hydrophobic and high microporous specific surface area and to adsorb toluene gas in moist ambience. An ethanol activation-assisted hydrothermal method was proposed to synthesize copper-benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylic acid (Cu-BTC) metal-organic framework, Cu-BTC, and ZSM-5 molecular sieve composites (Cu-BTC@ZSM-5). The dynamic adsorption process of toluene on different adsorbents was investigated, and the results showed that the toluene adsorption capacity of Cu-BTC@ZSM-5 (158.6 mg/g) was 2.53 times higher than Cu-BTC (62.7 mg/g), when the ZSM-5 content is 5% and the humidity is 30%RH. Compared with other factors, the humidity inhibited the adsorption of toluene on Cu-BTC@ZSM-5. Langmuir model and the pseudo-second kinetics model can better describe the adsorption behavior of Cu-BTC@ZSM-5. The thermodynamic results showed the adsorption process was a spontaneous exothermic process at low temperature and mainly physical adsorption. The relative regenerability can still up to 80.4% after six cycles. The adsorption mechanisms of Cu-BTC@ZSM-5 were pore-filling adsorption, π-π interaction, cation-π bonding, and hydrophobic interactions. This study will help to design a systematic route to evaluate the adsorption performance of Cu-BTC@ZSM-5 for toluene.

Abstract:An ethynyl-modified interpenetrated MOF material with lvt topology, [Cu2(BTEB)(NMF)2]·NMF·8H2O (compound 1, H4BTEB = 4,4',4'',4'''-(benzene-1,2,4,5-tetrayltetrakis(ethyne-2,1-diyl))tetrabenzoic acid, NMF = N-Methylformamide), was successfully synthesized by using an alkynyl-functionalized H4BTEB organic ligand under solvothermal conditions. Structural analysis shows that compound 1, consisting of a tetradentate carboxylic acid ligand and classical [Cu2(CO2)4] paddel-wheel structure building units, has a rare 4-connected lvt topology with dual interpenetrating structure, which can improve the framework stability, as well as the gas adsorption capacity and selectivity due to the restricted pore channel. According to the study of gas adsorption performance, compound 1 with a larger surface area, boasts a superior adsorption capacity for small gas molecules. Also, Ideal adsorption solution theory (IAST) computational simulation shows that compound 1 has good gas adsorption selectivity for C3H8/CH4, indicating its potential application in gas separation.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) based on Cu-benzene tricarboxylate (CuBTC) are widely used for gas storage and removal applications. However, they readily lose their crystal structures under humid conditions, limiting their practical applications. This structural decomposition reduces the specific surface area, gas adsorption capability, and recyclability of CuBTC considerably. In this study, a stable MOF against water exposure was designed based on FeBTC nanoparticle-covered CuBTC (FeCuBTC). A simple one-pot solvothermal process that enables the epitaxial growth of FeBTC on the CuBTC surface was proposed. Structural and morphological analyses after water exposure revealed that the water stability of FeCuBTC was better than that of CuBTC, which completely lost its crystallinity. This observed improvement in the water stability of the synthesized MOF proved to be beneficial for the adsorption of formaldehyde under humid conditions. The proposed strategy herein is simple yet highly effective in the design of hetero-bimetallic MOFs with considerably improved water resistance and extended applicability for environmental remediation processes.

Abstract:Herein, we demonstrate a new class of core-shell magnetic carbon hybrid materials (Fe3O4@C) for remarkable adsorptive desulfurization of dibenzothiophene (DBT), which have been successfully prepared through hydrocarbonization of glucose on the surface of Fe3O4 and the subsequent pyrolyzation process. The as-obtained Fe3O4@C retains amorphous nature of carbon shells with a large surface area and displays an increase of iron atoms as active sites under elevated pyrolyzation temperature which is favorable in the adsorption of sulfur-containing species through physical and chemical adsorption, respectively. We investigate the adsorption capacity and efficiency of Fe3O4@C as a magnetically adsorbent for the removal of DBT in model oils under various experimental conditions including the adsorbent obtained at different temperatures, the amount of adsorbents, the DBT initial concentration, the regeneration approach, as well as the interference species. Our results demonstrated that the as-obtained Fe3O4@C at 650 °C (Fe3O4@C-650) displays a remarkable estimated adsorption performance (57.5 mg DBT/g for 200 ppmw), extraordinary high desulfurization efficiency (99% for 200 ppmw), and a high selectivity for DBT compared with its derivatives. Moreover, Fe3O4@C can be recovered in a quite easy, economical, and eco-friendly manner by an external magnet after five cycles without significant weight loss, which significantly simplifies the operation procedure and favors the recycle of Fe3O4@C. Combined with the economic and eco-friendly merits, Fe3O4@C offers a new avenue to employ the magnetic carbon materials for industrial applications and provides a promising substitute for adsorptive desulfurization in view of academic, industrial, and environmental aspects.

Abstract:To develop high-performance metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for catalysis is of great importance. Here, we synthesized the mesoporous Cu 3− x Zn x (BTC) 2 (BTC = benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylate) nanocubes in a deep eutectic solvent of ZnCl 2 /ethylene glycol solution. The route can proceed at room temperature and the reaction time needed is shortened to be 30 min, which is superior to the conventional solvothermal route that usually needs high temperature and long reaction time. The formation mechanism of the mesoporous Cu 3− x Zn x (BTC) 2 nanocubes in deep eutectic solvent (DES) was investigated by in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction/small angle X-ray scattering/X-ray absorption fine structure conjunction technique. The mesoporous Cu 3− x Zn x (BTC) 2 nanocubes exhibit high catalytic activity and reusability for cyanosilylation reaction of benzaldehyde and aerobic oxidation reaction of benzylic alcohol.
