Abstract:We introduce two new tools for studying CAT(0) spaces: \emph{curtains}, versions of cubical hyperplanes; and the \emph{curtain model}, a counterpart of the curve graph. These tools shed new light on CAT(0) spaces, allowing us to prove a dichotomy of a rank-rigidity flavour, establish Ivanov-style rigidity theorems for isometries of the curtain model, find isometry-invariant copies of its Gromov boundary in the visual boundary of the underlying CAT(0) space, and characterise rank-one isometries both in terms of their action on the curtain model and in terms of curtains. Finally, we show that the curtain model is universal for WPD actions over all groups acting properly on the CAT(0) space.

Abstract:A CAT(0) space has rank at least n if every geodesic lies in an n -flat. Ballmann's Higher Rank Rigidity Conjecture predicts that a CAT(0) space of rank at least 2 with a geometric group action is rigid – isometric to a Riemannian symmetric space, a Euclidean building, or splits as a metric product. This paper is the first in a series motivated by Ballmann's conjecture. Here we prove that a CAT(0) space of rank at least n ≥2 is rigid if it contains a periodic n -flat and its Tits boundary has dimension ( n −1). This does not require a geometric group action. The result relies essentially on the study of flats which do not bound flat half-spaces – so-called Morse flats . We show that the Tits boundary ∂ T F of a periodic Morse n -flat F contains a regular point – a point with a Tits-neighborhood entirely contained in ∂ T F . More precisely, we show that the set of singular points in ∂ T F can be covered by finitely many round spheres of positive codimension.

Abstract:We study the theory of convergence for CAT$(0)$-lattices (that is groups $\Gamma$ acting geometrically on proper, geodesically complete CAT$(0)$-spaces) and their quotients (CAT$(0)$-orbispaces). We describe some splitting and collapsing phenomena, explaining precisely how these action can degenerate to a possibly non-discrete limit action. Finally, we prove a compactness theorem for the class of compact CAT$(0)$-homology orbifolds, and some applications: an isolation result for flat orbispaces and an entropy-pinching theorem.

Abstract:For a conformal theory it is natural to seek the conformal moduli space, M_c to which it belongs, generated by the exactly marginal deformations. By now we should have the tools to determine M_c in the presence of enough supersymmetry. Here it is shown that its dimension is determined in terms of a certain index. Moreover, the D-term of the global group is an obstruction for deformation, in presence of a certain amount of preserved supersymmetry. As an example we find that the deformations of the membrane (3d) field theory, under certain conditions, are in 35/SL(4,C). Other properties including the local geometry of M_c are discussed.

Abstract:Motivated by the question of whether braid groups are CAT(0), we investigate the CAT(0) behavior of fundamental groups of plane curve complements and certain universal families. If $C$ is the branch locus of a generic projection of a smooth, complete intersection surface to $\PP^2$, we show that $\pi_1(\PP^2\setminus C)$ is CAT(0). In the other direction, we prove that the fundamental group of the universal family associated with the singularities of type $E_6$, $E_7$, and $E_8$ is not CAT(0).

Lipschitz extensions from spaces of nonnegative curvature into CAT(1) spaces

Abstract:We prove that complete $\text{CAT}(\kappa)$ spaces of sufficiently small radii possess metric cotype 2 and metric Markov cotype 2. This generalizes the previously known result for complete $\text{CAT}(0)$ spaces. The generalization involves extending the variance inequality known for barycenters in $\text{CAT}(0)$ spaces to an inequality analogous to one for 2-uniformly convex Banach spaces, and demonstrating that the barycenter map on such spaces is Lipschitz continuous on the corresponding Wasserstein 2 space. By utilizing the generalized Ball extension theorem by Mendel and Naor, we obtain an extension result for Lipschitz maps from Alexandrov spaces of nonnegative curvature into $\text{CAT}(\kappa)$ spaces whose image is contained in a subspace of sufficiently small radius, thereby weakening the curvature assumption in the well-known Lipschitz extension theorem for Alexandrov spaces by Lang and Schröder. As an additional application, we obtain that $\ell_p$ spaces for $p > 2$ cannot be uniformly embedded into any $\text{CAT}(\kappa)$ space with sufficiently small diameter.

Central limit theorem on CAT(0) spaces with contracting isometries

Abstract:Let $G$ be a group with a non-elementary action on a proper CAT(0) space $X$, and let $\mu$ be a measure on $G$ such that the random walk $(Z_n)_n$ generated by $\mu$ has finite second moment on $X$. Let $o$ be a basepoint in $X$, and assume that there exists a rank one isometry in $G$. We prove that in this context, $(Z_n o )_n$ satisfies a Central Limit Theorem, namely that the random variables $\frac{1}{\sqrt{n}}(d(Z_n o, o) - n \lambda) $ converge in law to a non-degenerate Gaussian distribution $N_\mu$, for $\lambda$ the (positive) drift of the random walk. The strategy relies on the use of hyperbolic models introduced by H. Petyt, A. Zalloum and D. Spriano, which are analogues of curve graphs and cubical hyperplanes for the class of CAT(0) spaces. As a side result, we prove that the probability that the nth-step $Z_n$ acts on $X$ as a contracting isometry goes to 1 as $n$ goes to infinity.

Infinitesimal conformal deformations of triangulated surfaces in space

Abstract:We study infinitesimal conformal deformations of a triangulated surface in Euclidean space and investigate the change in its extrinsic geometry. A deformation of vertices is conformal if it preserves length cross-ratios. On one hand, conformal deformations generalize deformations preserving edge lengths. On the other hand, there is a one-to-one correspondence between infinitesimal conformal deformations in space and infinitesimal isometric deformations of the stereographic image on the sphere. The space of infinitesimal conformal deformations can be parametrized in terms of the change in dihedral angles, which is closely related to the Schläfli formula.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the capacity dimension of the boundary of $CAT(0)$ spaces. We first compare the two metrics on the boundary of a hyperbolic $CAT(0)$ space, i.e., the visual metric and the conical metric, and prove that they give the same capacity dimension of the boundary. Then we study the capacity dimension of the boundary of buildings, which is an important class of $CAT(0)$ spaces. Finally, we give a possible method to prove the finiteness of the asymptotic dimension of $CAT(0)$ spaces.

Abstract:We prove that if a sequence of geodesically complete CAT(0)-spaces with uniformly cocompact discrete groups of isometries converges in the Gromov-Hausdorff sense to , then the dimension of the maximal Euclidean factor splitted off by and is the same, for j big enough. In other words, no additional Euclidean factors can appear in the limit.

Abstract:In this project we explore the geometry of general metric spaces, where we do not necessarily have the tools of differential geometry on our side. Some metric spaces (X,d) allow us to define geodesics, permitting us to compare geodesic triangles in (X,d) to geodesic triangles in a so called model space. In Chapters 1 and 2 we first discuss how to define the length of curves, and geodesics on (X,d), and then using these to portray the notion of ``non-positive curvature'' for a metric space. Chapter 3 concerns itself with special cases of such non-positively curved metric spaces, called CAT(0) spaces. These satisfy particularly nice properties, such as being uniquely geodesic, contractible, and having a convex metric, among others. We mainly follow the book by Martin R. Bridson and André Haefliger, with some differences. Firstly, we restrict ourselves to using the Euclidean plane E^2 as our model space, which is all that is necessary to define CAT(0) spaces. Secondly, we skip many sections of the mentioned book, as many are not relevant for our specific purposes. Finally, we add details to some of the proofs, which can be sparse in details or completely non-existent in the original literature. In this way we hope to create a more streamlined, self-contained, and accessible introduction to CAT(0) spaces.

Abstract:We show that certain representations over fields with positive characteristic of groups having CAT(0) fixed point property ${\rm F}\mathcal{B}_{\widetilde{A}_n}$ have finite image. In particular, we obtain rigidity results for representations of the following groups: the special linear group over $\mathbb{Z}$, $SL_k(\mathbb{Z})$, the special automorphism group of a free group, ${\rm SAut}(F_k)$, the mapping class group of a closed orientable surface, ${\rm Mod}(\Sigma_g)$, and many other groups. In the case of characteristic zero we show that low dimensional complex representations of groups having CAT(0) fixed point property ${\rm F}\mathcal{B}_{\widetilde{A}_n}$ have finite image if they always have compact closure.

Abstract:We investigate Farley's CAT(0) cubical model for Thompson's group F (we adopt the classical language of F, using binary trees and piecewise linear maps). Main results include: in general, Thompson's group elements are parabolic; we find simple, exact formulas for the CAT(0) translation lengths, in particular the elements of F are ballistic and uniformly bounded away from zero; there exist flats of any dimension and we construct explicitly many of them; we reveal large regions in the Tits Boundary, for example the positive part of a non-separable Hilbert sphere, but also more complicated objects. En route, we solve several open problems proposed in Farley's papers.
