Abstract:We study low-dimensional representations of matrix groups over general rings, by considering group actions on CAT(0) spaces, spheres and acyclic manifolds.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problems that this paper attempts to solve mainly focus on the low - dimensional representation theory and the properties of matrix groups acting on specific geometric objects. Specifically:
1. **Constraints of low - dimensional representations**: The author studied the low - dimensional representations of matrix groups over general rings and explored the constraints of these representations. A central question is whether there exist non - trivial group homomorphisms \(E_n(R)\to E_{n - 1}(R)\) for \(n\geq3\). Although this problem is purely algebraic, it is generally very difficult to answer it by algebraic methods. The author attempts to deny this problem from the perspective of geometric group theory.
2. **Actions of matrix groups on CAT(0) spaces**: The author studied the actions of matrix groups on CAT(0) spaces, spheres and acyclic manifolds. The main results include:
- For low - dimensional CAT(0) spaces, the matrix group action always has a global fixed point (Theorem 1).
- For low - dimensional spheres and acyclic manifolds, the matrix group action is always trivial (Theorem 3).
3. **Stable range and K - theory**: The author also studied the relationship between the actions of matrix groups on CAT(0) spaces and the stable range. Specifically, for any finitely generated ring \(R\) and integer \(n\geq3\), the matrix group \(E_n(R)\) has the property \(FA_{n - 2}\) (Theorem 1). In addition, the author also discussed the property \(FA_d\) of the general linear group \(GL_n(R)\) (Theorem 2).
4. **Group actions on manifolds**: The author considered the actions of matrix groups on compact manifolds, especially the actions of \(SL_n(\mathbb{Z})\) and its subgroups on low - dimensional spheres and acyclic manifolds. The main results show that these actions are trivial under certain conditions (Theorem 3 and Theorem 4).
5. **Actions of stable elementary groups**: Finally, the author proved that the stable elementary group \(E(R)\) and the unit stable elementary group \(EU(R,\Lambda)\) cannot act non - trivially on any compact manifold (Theorem 5).
In summary, the main objective of this paper is to study the actions of matrix groups on different geometric objects by means of geometric group theory, thereby solving the problems of the constraints of low - dimensional representations and the properties of related group actions.
