Abstract:In this paper, we investigate finitely generated groups of isometries of CAT(0) spaces containing some central hyperbolic isometry, and study CAT(0) groups. We show that every CAT(0) group $\Gamma$ has the semi-direct product structure $\Gamma=(\cdots(((\Gamma'\rtimes\langle\delta_{n}\rangle)\rtimes\langle\delta_{n-1}\rangle)\rtimes\langle\delta_{n-2}\rangle)\cdots)\rtimes\langle\delta_{1}\rangle$ where $\Gamma'$ is a CAT(0) group with finite center and $\delta_i\in \Gamma$ for $i=1,\dots,n$, and $\Gamma$ contains a finite-index subgroup $\Gamma'\times A$ where $A$ is isomorphic to ${\mathbb{Z}}^n$. We introduce some examples and remarks. Also we provide an example of a virtually irreducible CAT(0) group with trivial-center that acts geometrically on some CAT(0) space that splits as a product $T \times {\mathbb{R}}$.

Abstract:A CAT(0) space has rank at least n if every geodesic lies in an n -flat. Ballmann's Higher Rank Rigidity Conjecture predicts that a CAT(0) space of rank at least 2 with a geometric group action is rigid – isometric to a Riemannian symmetric space, a Euclidean building, or splits as a metric product. This paper is the first in a series motivated by Ballmann's conjecture. Here we prove that a CAT(0) space of rank at least n ≥2 is rigid if it contains a periodic n -flat and its Tits boundary has dimension ( n −1). This does not require a geometric group action. The result relies essentially on the study of flats which do not bound flat half-spaces – so-called Morse flats . We show that the Tits boundary ∂ T F of a periodic Morse n -flat F contains a regular point – a point with a Tits-neighborhood entirely contained in ∂ T F . More precisely, we show that the set of singular points in ∂ T F can be covered by finitely many round spheres of positive codimension.

Boundary rigidity of 3D CAT(0) cube complexes

Abstract:The boundary rigidity problem is a classical question from Riemannian geometry: if $(M, g)$ is a Riemannian manifold with smooth boundary, is the geometry of $M$ determined up to isometry by the metric $d_g$ induced on the boundary $\partial M$? In this paper, we consider a discrete version of this problem: can we determine the combinatorial type of a finite cube complex from its boundary distances? As in the continuous case, reconstruction is not possible in general, but one expects a positive answer under suitable contractibility and non-positive curvature conditions. Indeed, in two dimensions Haslegrave gave a positive answer to this question when the complex is a finite quadrangulation of the disc with no internal vertices of degree less than $4$. We prove a $3$-dimensional generalisation of this result: the combinatorial type of a finite CAT(0) cube complex with an embedding in $\mathbb{R}^3$ can be reconstructed from its boundary distances. Additionally, we prove a direct strengthening of Haslegrave's result: the combinatorial type of any finite 2-dimensional CAT(0) cube complex can be reconstructed from its boundary distances.

Convergence and collapsing of CAT$(0)$-lattices

Abstract:We study the theory of convergence for CAT$(0)$-lattices (that is groups $\Gamma$ acting geometrically on proper, geodesically complete CAT$(0)$-spaces) and their quotients (CAT$(0)$-orbispaces). We describe some splitting and collapsing phenomena, explaining precisely how these action can degenerate to a possibly non-discrete limit action. Finally, we prove a compactness theorem for the class of compact CAT$(0)$-homology orbifolds, and some applications: an isolation result for flat orbispaces and an entropy-pinching theorem.

Abstract:Given a sublinear function $\kappa$, $\kappa$-Morse boundaries $\pka X$ of proper \CAT spaces are introduced by Qing, Rafi and Tiozzo. It is a topological space that consists of a large set of quasi-geodesic rays and it is quasi-isometrically invariant and metrizable. In this paper, we study the sublinearly Morse boundaries with the assumption that there is a proper cocompact action of a group $G$ on the \CAT space in question. We show that $G$ acts minimally on $\pka G$ and that contracting elements of $G$ induces a weak north-south dynamic on $\pka G$. Furthermore, we show that a homeomorphism $f \from \pka G \to \pka G'$ comes from a quasi-isometry if and only if $f$ is successively quasi-m{ö}bius and stable. Lastly, we characterize exactly when the sublinearly Morse boundary of a \CAT space is compact.

CAT(0) geometry of complex curve complements and families

Abstract:Motivated by the question of whether braid groups are CAT(0), we investigate the CAT(0) behavior of fundamental groups of plane curve complements and certain universal families. If $C$ is the branch locus of a generic projection of a smooth, complete intersection surface to $\PP^2$, we show that $\pi_1(\PP^2\setminus C)$ is CAT(0). In the other direction, we prove that the fundamental group of the universal family associated with the singularities of type $E_6$, $E_7$, and $E_8$ is not CAT(0).

Abstract:We investigate Farley's CAT(0) cubical model for Thompson's group F (we adopt the classical language of F, using binary trees and piecewise linear maps). Main results include: in general, Thompson's group elements are parabolic; we find simple, exact formulas for the CAT(0) translation lengths, in particular the elements of F are ballistic and uniformly bounded away from zero; there exist flats of any dimension and we construct explicitly many of them; we reveal large regions in the Tits Boundary, for example the positive part of a non-separable Hilbert sphere, but also more complicated objects. En route, we solve several open problems proposed in Farley's papers.

Hyperbolic models for CAT(0) spaces

Abstract:We introduce two new tools for studying CAT(0) spaces: \emph{curtains}, versions of cubical hyperplanes; and the \emph{curtain model}, a counterpart of the curve graph. These tools shed new light on CAT(0) spaces, allowing us to prove a dichotomy of a rank-rigidity flavour, establish Ivanov-style rigidity theorems for isometries of the curtain model, find isometry-invariant copies of its Gromov boundary in the visual boundary of the underlying CAT(0) space, and characterise rank-one isometries both in terms of their action on the curtain model and in terms of curtains. Finally, we show that the curtain model is universal for WPD actions over all groups acting properly on the CAT(0) space.

Abstract:We show that certain representations over fields with positive characteristic of groups having CAT(0) fixed point property ${\rm F}\mathcal{B}_{\widetilde{A}_n}$ have finite image. In particular, we obtain rigidity results for representations of the following groups: the special linear group over $\mathbb{Z}$, $SL_k(\mathbb{Z})$, the special automorphism group of a free group, ${\rm SAut}(F_k)$, the mapping class group of a closed orientable surface, ${\rm Mod}(\Sigma_g)$, and many other groups. In the case of characteristic zero we show that low dimensional complex representations of groups having CAT(0) fixed point property ${\rm F}\mathcal{B}_{\widetilde{A}_n}$ have finite image if they always have compact closure.

Abstract:We develop a framework relating semiorthogonal decompositions of a triangulated category $\mathcal{C}$ to paths in its space of stability conditions. We prove that when $\mathcal{C}$ is the homotopy category of a smooth and proper idempotent complete pre-triangulated dg-category, every semiorthogonal decomposition whose factors admit a Bridgeland stability condition can be obtained from our framework.

Abstract:In any CAT(k) space M, the "shadow" of a tangent vector Z at a point p is the set vectors that form an angle of \pi or more with Z. Taking logarithm maps at points approaching p along a fixed geodesic ray from p with tangent Z collapses the shadow to a single ray while leaving isometrically intact every convex cone that avoids the shadow of Z.

Abstract:We prove that if a sequence of geodesically complete CAT(0)-spaces with uniformly cocompact discrete groups of isometries converges in the Gromov-Hausdorff sense to , then the dimension of the maximal Euclidean factor splitted off by and is the same, for j big enough. Abstract:In all known examples of a CAT(0) group acting on CAT(0) spaces with non-homeomorphic CAT(0) visual boundaries, the visual boundaries are each not path-connected. In this paper, we show this does not have to be the case. In particular, for each n>0n>0 we provide examples of right-angled Artin groups which exhibit non-unique CAT(0) visual boundaries where all of the visual boundaries are nn-connected. We also prove a combination theorem for certain amalgams of CAT(0) groups to act on spaces whose visual boundaries are not path-connected. We apply this theorem to some right-angled Artin groups.
