Abstract:We give a detailed description of the possible limits in the equivariant-Gromov-Hausdorff sense of sequences $(X_j,G_j)$, where the $X_j$'s are proper, geodesically complete, uniformly packed, CAT$(0)$-spaces and the $G_j$'s are closed, totally disconnected, unimodular, uniformly cocompact groups of isometries. We show that the class of metric quotients $G/X$, where $X$ and $G$ are as above, is compact under Gromov-Hausdorff convergence. In particular it is a geometric compactification of the class of locally geodesically complete, locally compact, locally CAT$(0)$-spaces with uniformly packed universal cover and uniformly bounded diameter.

Coarse obstructions to cocompact cubulation

Abstract:We provide geometric methods to both lower- and upper-bound the large-scale dimension of CAT(0) cube complexes quasiisometric to a given group $G$. When these bounds overlap, this provides obstructions to $G$ being cocompactly cubulated. More strongly, it prevents $G$ from being a coarse median space. As applications, we show that many free-by-cyclic groups cannot be cocompactly cubulated, and that any tubular group with a coarse median is virtually compact special.

Abstract:We prove that if a sequence of geodesically complete CAT(0)-spaces with uniformly cocompact discrete groups of isometries converges in the Gromov-Hausdorff sense to , then the dimension of the maximal Euclidean factor splitted off by and is the same, for j big enough. In other words, no additional Euclidean factors can appear in the limit.

Abstract:Let X be a locally compact geodesically complete CAT(0) space and G be a discrete group acting properly and cocompactly on X. We show that G contains an element acting as a hyperbolic isometry on each indecomposable de Rham factor of X. Abstract:Generalizing Culler and Vogtmann's Outer Space for the free group, Guirardel and Levitt construct an Outer Space for a free product of groups. We completely characterize when this space (or really its simplicial spine) supports an equivariant piecewise-Euclidean or piecewise-hyperbolic CAT(0) metric. Our results are mostly negative, extending thesis work of Bridson and related to thesis work of Cunningham. In particular, provided the dimension of the spine is at least three, it is never CAT(0). Surprisingly, we exhibit one family of free products for which the Outer Space is two-dimensional and \emph{does} support an equivariant CAT(0) metric.

Abstract:We provide sufficient conditions as to when a boundary component of a cocompact convex set in a CAT(0)-space is contractible. We then use this to study when the limit set of a quasi-convex, codimension one subgroup of a negatively curved manifold group is `wild' in the boundary. The proof is based on a notion of coarse upper curvature bounds in terms of barycenters and the careful study of interpolation in geodesic metric spaces.

Abstract:We provide a systematic description of the automorphism groups of specially cocompact CAT(0) cube complexes. We show that these groups are topologically finitely generated, present a method to explicitly obtain generating sets, and prove a dichotomy on their size. Furthermore, we show that, under some extra assumptions, the normal subgroup known as Aut^+ is simple, non-discrete, and tdlc. In particular, we obtain a new class of simple, non-discrete, tdlc groups that are accessible to further study. Finally, we study the relative size of Aut^+ in the automorphism group, providing a sufficient condition for its closure to be finite index and presenting a common example where it is not even cocompact.

Abstract:A CAT(0) space has rank at least n if every geodesic lies in an n -flat. Ballmann's Higher Rank Rigidity Conjecture predicts that a CAT(0) space of rank at least 2 with a geometric group action is rigid – isometric to a Riemannian symmetric space, a Euclidean building, or splits as a metric product. This paper is the first in a series motivated by Ballmann's conjecture. Here we prove that a CAT(0) space of rank at least n ≥2 is rigid if it contains a periodic n -flat and its Tits boundary has dimension ( n −1). This does not require a geometric group action. The result relies essentially on the study of flats which do not bound flat half-spaces – so-called Morse flats . We show that the Tits boundary ∂ T F of a periodic Morse n -flat F contains a regular point – a point with a Tits-neighborhood entirely contained in ∂ T F . More precisely, we show that the set of singular points in ∂ T F can be covered by finitely many round spheres of positive codimension.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a proper, geodesically complete CAT(0) space under a proper, non-elementary, isometric action by a group $\Gamma$ with a rank one element. We construct a generalized Bowen-Margulis measure on the space of unit-speed parametrized geodesics of $X$ modulo the $\Gamma$-action. Although the construction of Bowen-Margulis measures for rank one nonpositively curved manifolds and for CAT(-1) spaces is well-known, the construction for CAT(0) spaces hinges on establishing a new structural result of independent interest: Almost no geodesic, under the Bowen-Margulis measure, bounds a flat strip of any positive width. We also show that almost every point in $\partial_\infty X$, under the Patterson-Sullivan measure, is isolated in the Tits metric. (For these results we assume the Bowen-Margulis measure is finite, as it is in the cocompact case). Finally, we precisely characterize mixing when $X$ has full limit set: A finite Bowen-Margulis measure is not mixing under the geodesic flow precisely when $X$ is a tree with all edge lengths in $c \mathbb Z$ for some $c > 0$. This characterization is new, even in the setting of CAT(-1) spaces. More general (technical) versions of these results are also stated in the paper.

A Gentle Introduction to CAT(0) Spaces

Abstract:In this project we explore the geometry of general metric spaces, where we do not necessarily have the tools of differential geometry on our side. Some metric spaces (X,d) allow us to define geodesics, permitting us to compare geodesic triangles in (X,d) to geodesic triangles in a so called model space. In Chapters 1 and 2 we first discuss how to define the length of curves, and geodesics on (X,d), and then using these to portray the notion of ``non-positive curvature'' for a metric space. Chapter 3 concerns itself with special cases of such non-positively curved metric spaces, called CAT(0) spaces. These satisfy particularly nice properties, such as being uniquely geodesic, contractible, and having a convex metric, among others. We mainly follow the book by Martin R. Bridson and André Haefliger, with some differences. Firstly, we restrict ourselves to using the Euclidean plane E^2 as our model space, which is all that is necessary to define CAT(0) spaces. Secondly, we skip many sections of the mentioned book, as many are not relevant for our specific purposes. Finally, we add details to some of the proofs, which can be sparse in details or completely non-existent in the original literature. In this way we hope to create a more streamlined, self-contained, and accessible introduction to CAT(0) spaces.

Abstract:We study the theory of convergence for CAT$(0)$-lattices (that is groups $\Gamma$ acting geometrically on proper, geodesically complete CAT$(0)$-spaces) and their quotients (CAT$(0)$-orbispaces). We describe some splitting and collapsing phenomena, explaining precisely how these action can degenerate to a possibly non-discrete limit action. Finally, we prove a compactness theorem for the class of compact CAT$(0)$-homology orbifolds, and some applications: an isolation result for flat orbispaces and an entropy-pinching theorem.

Abstract:We prove the arborescence of any locally finite complex that is $CAT(0)$ with a polyhedral metric for which all vertex stars are convex. In particular locally finite $CAT(0)$ cube complexes or equilateral simplicial complexes are arborescent. Moreover, a triangulated manifold admits a $CAT(0)$ polyhedral metric if and only if it admits arborescent triangulations. We prove eventually that every locally finite complex which is $CAT(0)$ with a polyhedral metric has a barycentric subdivision which is arborescent.
