Abstract:Solvent degradation results in loss of solvent which increase the capture cost due to the need of solvent replacement, waste treatment and strategies to avoid emission of unwanted compounds as well as possible operationally problems due to increased corrosion. Degradation studies have typically been conducted under oxidative or thermal degradation conditions. In addition, several laboratory rigs have been built to study solvent degradation under process conditions, like SINTEF's Solvent Degradation rig (SDR). In this work a summary of findings from 4 test campaigns in SINTEF's SDR using MEA as solvent. During these campaigns several parameters has been varied such as increase in desorber temperature, increase in NOx and O2 in the flue gas, increase in MEA concentration and a test with an inhibitor (potassium iodide, KI). From these campaigns lean samples have been analyzed for a wide range of compounds and 4-(2-hydroxyethyl)-2-piperazinone (HEPO, 23936-04-1) was found to be the largest (on weight basis) degradation products at the end of each campaign. Other major degradation compounds were N-(2-hydroxyethyl)-glycine (HeGly, 5835-28-9), N,N'-bis(2-hydroxyethyl)-urea (MEA-Urea, 15438-70-7) and 2-[(2-aminoethyl)amino]-ethanol (HEEDA, 111-41-1). The results showed that increase in desorber temperature had the most significant effect, which also resulted in an increase in the total degradation. A clear increase in nitrosamine was also observed when the NOx level in the flue gas was increased. Two of the campaigns were run with the same conditions/scheme except that an inhibitor (KI) was added to the solvent before the experiment was started for the last campaign. By comparing the total degradation at the end of these two campaigns no significant difference was observed. Even if the total degradation at the end was similar for these two campaigns, lower loss was observed for the experiment with inhibitor until the desorber temperature was increased and there were also clear differences in the degradation profile for these two campaigns, where typical oxidative degradation products were lower in the campaign with inhibitor while the thermal was higher. In one campaign 40wt% MEA was used instead of 30wt% and by comparing these campaigns an increased absolute degradation with higher MEA concentration was observed
