Abstract:The thickness and properties of brash ice are usually compared with the properties of the surrounding level ice. The differences between these ice types are important to understand since the consolidated brash ice layer is typically assumed to have the same properties as level ice. Therefore, significant effort in the measurement campaign during the winters of 2020–2021, 2021–2022, and 2023 was made to develop a better understanding of the full-scale brash ice channel development. The channels were located near the shore in the Bay of Bothnia, Luleå, Sweden. The main parameters investigated were the snow, slush, and total ice thicknesses, including ice formed from freezing water and from freezing slush as well as the ice microstructure and strength. To our knowledge, this is the first paper to report the influence of snow in brash ice channels. It was observed that a significant amount of snow covered the brash ice channels between the ship passages. After each ship passage, the snow was submerged and formed slush-filled voids, which thereafter transformed into snow ice (SI) clusters frozen together with columnar ice. The SI content in the brash ice and side ridges was estimated from image analyses. The analyses showed that the snow ice content was 73% in level ice in the vicinity of the ship channel, 58% in the side ridges of the channel, and 21% in the middle of the test channel, whereas in the main channel, the SI contents were 54%, 43%, and 41% in each location, respectively.

Geometric Model on the Evolution of Brash Ice Channels

Abstract:The formation of a brash ice channel results from frequent ship navigation along fairways or in ports. The formation of brash ice evolves over the winter and is due to the ‘freezing breaking’ cycle induced by sub-zero temperatures and the ship traffic. Very few studies have been made to evaluate or model the evolution of the channel profile over the winter. The following outlines the analysis of full scale data and model scale brash ice channel measurements. A simple geometric model is developed based on environmental parameters and ship characteristics, namely Cumulative Freezing Degree Days and the vessel beam. The model provides a scheme that can be integrated into brash ice growth models for conceptual designs and marine operations.

Abstract:Frost damage is an important issue for service life evaluation of concrete structures in cold regions. In fact, the frost action can have both strengthening and damaging effects on the mechanical properties of concrete material, depending on several environmental and material factors, and this complexity makes the damage evaluation more difficult in the real environment. This paper aims to develop a unified model through a micro‐mesoscale approach, which can quantitatively estimate and distinguish the strengthening/damaging effects by frost action. At microscale, the model takes into account the prestressed condition by internal pore pressures, as well as the change of effective elastic properties when ice forms in micropores. At mesoscale, the mechanical contribution of ice and liquid inside mesocracks is considered. Finally, the static mechanical behaviors of concrete under different situations are simulated based on a two‐dimensional discrete model rigid body spring method. The simulated results can clearly distinguish and separate each strengthening and damaging effect. The microice may enlarge the strengths by 50–110% while the mesocracks may reduce the strength by 40–80%, the effect of ice in mesocracks is also discussed. The final apparent performance depends on which strengthening/damaging effect is more dominant and is mainly controlled by the entrained air amount. Previous experiments are also used to verify the proposed model, and they are found in a good agreement.

Abstract:In order to study the collision of sea ice on bridge piers of a sea-crossing bridge, this study establishes a finite element model of the impact of sea ice on bridge piers in aqueous media based on explicit dynamics analysis software and programming software using the arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian (ALE) method. The results show that, when the sea-ice spacing is larger than the sea-ice edge length, the increase in sea-ice spacing leads to a decrease in the collision force and a significant increase in the probability of climbing and overturning. The increase in sea-ice mass significantly increases the impact force on the bridge abutment, and the peak value increases linearly with the increase in mass, and the sea-ice climbing and overturning phenomena are obvious. Different shapes of sea ice are obtained by cutting the sea-ice field with the two-dimensional Voronoi method, and the maximum impact force increases significantly with the increase in the average area. Irregularly shaped sea ice leads to a larger impact force and triggers the accumulation climbing phenomenon, which is verified by experiments, and the experimental values are in good agreement with the simulated values. In conclusion, this study reveals the significant effects of the spacing, mass, and shape of sea ice on the impact force of bridge piers, which provides an important reference for the design of bridge structures.

Abstract:This study numerically examines the evolution of cavitation, trajectory, and impact load during the process of water exit of a submerged and ventilated cavitation cylinder in a brash ice zone by coupling the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method with the discrete element method (DEM). A two-way coupling scheme is used to study the influence on the fluid due to the brash ice. The ice conditions off Wilkes Land in the Antarctic marginal ice zone in late winter were used to formulate a DEM particle model without failure limitation. The brash ice zone was established according to random positions of the ice generated by self-programming. The CFD-DEM coupling method was verified through comparisons with both experimental results and empirical formulae in the literature. The results show that the cavity quickly broke while crossing the water surface, and a prominent formation of spikes was observed in brash ice conditions. The displacement and deflection angle of the cylinder had different features in the two directions perpendicular to the axis. Furthermore, strong alternating loads were observed when the water surface was crossed in comparison with those in ice-free conditions.

Abstract:Abstract. The microstructure of polycrystalline ice with a threading solution of brine controls its numerous characteristics, including the ice mechanical properties, ice–atmosphere interactions, sea ice albedo, and (photo)chemical behavior in and on the ice. Ice samples were previously prepared in laboratories in order to study various facets of ice–impurity interactions and (photo)reactions to model natural ice–impurity behavior. We examine the impact of the freezing conditions and solute (CsCl used as a proxy for naturally occurring salts) concentrations on the microscopic structure of ice samples via an environmental scanning electron microscope. The method allows us to observe the ice surfaces in detail, namely, the free ice, brine puddles, brine-containing grain boundary grooves, individual ice crystals, and imprints left by entrapped air bubbles at temperatures higher than −25 ∘C. The amount of brine on the external surface is found proportional to the solute concentration and is strongly dependent on the sample preparation method. Time-lapse images in the condition of slight sublimation reveal subsurface association of air bubbles with brine. With rising temperatures (up to −14 ∘C), the brine surface coverage increases to remain enhanced during the subsequent cooling and until the final crystallization below the eutectic temperature. The ice recrystallization dynamics identify the role of surface spikes in retarding the ice boundaries' propagation (Zener pinning). The findings thus quantify the amounts of brine exposed to incoming radiation, available for the gas exchange, and influencing other mechanical and optical properties of ice. The results have straightforward and indirect implications for artificially prepared and naturally occurring salty ice, respectively.

Abstract:Rock–ice avalanches that occur in cold alpine regions often cause widespread devastation because of their high mobility and massive destructive potential. The protection structure designs are often empirical because of the current poor understanding of the impact mechanisms between rock–ice avalanches and rigid barriers. In this study, a series of small-scale flume tests were conducted to investigate the effect of ice content on the flow behavior and the impact dynamics on a rigid barrier. The experimental results were used to calibrate numerical simulations using the discrete element method. Results reveal that the normalized peak impact force and runup height increase with increasing ice content, while the bottom shear stress decreases. Additionally, particle segregation occurs in both the vertical and flow directions during the flow process—ice particles tend to segregate upward and forward and the overall degree of segregation peaks when the ice content is 40%. Both proportions of contact number and impact force on the rigid barrier contributed by the ice are larger than the initial ice content. This study helps reveal the influence of ice as a special component on the mobility and impact mechanisms of rock–ice avalanches and should improve rock–ice avalanche hazard assessments.

Abstract:Floating glacial ice features of various sizes pose a substantial threat to the structural integrity of offshore structures in ice-prone regions. Relatively small ice feathers, e.g., bergy bits and growlers, are a major concern because they are more difficult to detect by marine radars and perform concurrent ice management operations, especially in extreme sea states.This two-part companion paper aims to assess potential loads of accidental ice actions that are exerted on an offshore semi-submersible platform and the consequences of these actions. Paper I investigates the probability distributions of glacial ice impact velocities and the associated impact heights under different sea states. Given the critical impact energy identified from Paper I, Paper II investigates ice crushing and structural damage during glacial ice impacts in accidental limit states (ALS) and ice-structure interactions. Three different approaches, i.e., the integrated approach, weakly coupled approach and fully coupled approach, are employed. The methods are based on different coupling strategies between ice and the structure and are used to identify the critical local ice sharpness for stiffened panels of the platform column, which causes maximum structural damage given an energy demand. The accuracy of the simulation results, calculation efficiency and scope of application using the three approaches are compared and discussed.With the identified critical sharpness of the ice model, numerical simulations are performed to impact various locations of the platform column. Apart from scenarios with head-on ice impacts, several oblique impact scenarios are simulated, where the glacial ice feature slides along the contact plane with different initial indentations of the panel. The results are discussed with respect to the resistance and energy absorption of the ice and structure and ice-structure interactions.

Abstract:The porous structure of snow becomes denser with time under gravity, primarily due to the creep of its ice matrix with viscoplasticity. Despite investigation of this behavior at the macroscopic scale, the driving microscopic mechanisms are still not well understood. Thanks to high‐performance computing and dedicated solvers, we modeled snow elasto‐viscoplasticity with 3D images of its microstructure and different mechanical models of ice. The comparison of our numerical experiments to oedometric compression tests measured by tomography showed that ice in snow rather behaves as a heterogeneous set of ice crystals than as homogeneous polycrystalline ice. Similarly to dense ice, the basal slip system contributed at most, in the simulations, to the total snow deformation. However, in the model, the deformation accommodation between crystals was permitted by the pore space and did not require any prismatic and pyramidal slips, whereas the latter are pre‐requisite for the simulation of dense ice.

Abstract:We review several aspects of aerodynamics that affect the growth, morphology, and symmetry of snow crystals. We derive quantitative estimates for aerodynamical forces that orient falling snow crystals, estimate how air flow around snow crystals affects their growth rates (the ventilation effect), and examine how the combination of orientation and growth modification can stabilize or destabilize different growth behaviors. Special attention is given to the formation of triangular snow crystals, since it appears that aerodynamical effects are responsible for producing this unusual morphology, both in nature and in the laboratory.

Abstract:Snow and ice accumulation on surfaces presents significant safety and efficiency challenges across various industries, necessitating the development of effective mitigation strategies. In this study, the dynamics and energy dissipation of natural snowflakes impacting superhydrophobic surfaces (SHS) were explored using high-speed imaging and a novel image processing method. The size, velocity (impact and bounce), and contact time of natural wet snowflakes were quantitatively analyzed, identifying two primary impact outcomes: bouncing and fragmentation. The analysis focused on bouncing to study the coefficient of restitution (COR) of snowflakes. It was found that small snowflakes (<1.40 mm in diameter) with low impact velocities (<2.90 m/s) tend to be bounced, whereas larger, faster snowflakes are more likely to be fragmented. For the first time, the contact time of natural snowflakes on SHS was also reported, introducing a dimensionless contact time (DCT) for quantifying energy dissipation during the impact. The results indicate that energy dissipation has a cubic relationship with snowflake size and a quadratic relationship with its impact velocity, demonstrating that larger and faster snowflakes dissipate more energy. It is observed that a reduction in DCT leads to an exponential increase in COR and a decrease in normalized energy dissipation, supporting the theoretical prediction that the COR approaches one and the normalized energy dissipation approaches zero as the DCT approaches zero. These results are significant for enhancing the design and efficiency of anti-icing surfaces, contributing to the development of models that simulate snow accumulation behaviors and inform better design of both active and passive snow mitigation strategies.
