Abstract:Active rock glaciers are viscous flow features embodying ice-rich permafrost and other ice masses. They contain significant amounts of ground ice and serve as potential freshwater reservoirs as mountain glaciers melt in response to climate warming. However, current knowledge about ice content in rock glaciers has been acquired mainly from in situ investigations in limited study areas, which hinders a comprehensive understanding of ice storage in rock glaciers situated in remote mountains over local to regional scales. This study proposes a novel approach for assessing the hydrological value of rock glaciers in a more quantitative way and presents exploratory results focusing on a small region. We develop an empirical rheological model to infer ice content of rock glaciers using readily available input data, including rock glacier planar shape, surface slope angle, active layer thickness, and surface velocity. The model is calibrated and validated using observational data from the Chilean Andes and the Swiss Alps. We apply the model to five rock glaciers in the Khumbu and Lhotse valleys, northeastern Nepal. The velocity constraints applied to the model are derived from interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) measurements. The volume of rock glacier is estimated based on an existing scaling approach. The inferred volumetric ice fraction in the Khumbu and Lhotse valleys ranges from 70 ± 8 % to 74 ± 8 %, and the water volume equivalents lie between 1.4 ± 0.2 and 5.9±0.6×106 m 3 for the coherently moving parts of individual rock glaciers. Due to the accessibility of the model inputs, our approach is applicable to permafrost regions where observational data are lacking, which is valuable for estimating the water storage potential of rock glaciers in remote areas.

Abstract:Gravimetric measurements allow monitoring mass transport in the Earth system and one example is temporal variations in the global water cycle including the cryosphere. Coupling gravity observations to the underlying processes requires modeling of the relevant mass elements. When observing the gravity field from space (i.e., by satellites), point mass models or simple spherical surface layers (mascons) are a reasonable choice. However, for terrestrial observations taken right on the surface of the relevant masses, precise modeling of the geometry of those mass elements and the related gravitational effects becomes crucial for the quality of the modeling and the correct interpretation of the results. In this study, two different modeling techniques are investigated, the right rectangular prism and the general polyhedron. Both approximations provide the possibility to analytically calculate the corresponding gravitational signal. Although modeling in terms of polyhedrons is numerically more complex and less efficient, the representation of the actual surface is superior as the inclined polyhedral surface fits much better to the actual topographic surface than the step function implied by rectangular prisms with horizontal top plane. The case study presented here is related to the gravimetric mass balance of a mountain glacier (Vernagtferner in the Ötz valley, Austria) where on the one hand high resolution digital terrain models (DTM of resolution 1 m × 1 m) are available, while on the other hand, the accuracy requirements are very high (on the level of 10 −7 m/s 2 , i.e., 10 μGal). We evaluate first and second order derivatives of the gravitational potential induced by the melting of ice masses between epochs 2009 and 2016 at gravity sites on and off the actual glacier body. Furthermore, the relation of ground surface slope to the differences between the modeling approaches is investigated for a small part of the DTM, containing a variety of different slope regimes. Besides the original grid spacing, denser and coarser grids are also evaluated in order to examine the relation of the considered DTM resolution to the modeling differences. The modeling choice, the location of the computation points and the morphology of the mass distribution are the main factors that determine the quality of the results. The comparison of the two methods for the original 1 m resolution, provides differences up to 2.9 μGal for the vertical component of the attraction V z , 9.1 μGal/m for the gradient V zx , 4.6 μGal/m for V yz and 17.1 μGal/m for V zz . Coarser grid resolutions increase these values significantly, up to 500 μGal at specific locations, while grids denser than the 1 m resolution decrease them for about 48%.

Abstract:Using satellite remote sensing, this study aims to assess the validity of upscaling ground‐based structural observations of small valley glaciers, to larger‐scale ice masses that are too vast or inaccessible for field‐study or ground‐truthing. Focusing on four adjacent valley glaciers on Bylot Island, Nunavut, Arctic Canada, we establish that ground‐based structural observations from two smaller (Stagnation and Fountain glaciers) can be used to interpret the structures visible in optical satellite imagery in two much larger glaciers (Aktineq and Sermilik glaciers). All the glaciers investigated have prominent longitudinal lineations, which are interpreted from ground observations to be longitudinal foliation. Other structures that were identified include primary stratification, crevasses, crevasse traces, and thrust‐faults. Strong longitudinal foliation is concentrated at flow‐unit boundaries, with differential ablation of ice facies commonly resulting in a ridge‐and‐furrow supraglacial topography that controls supraglacial streams and debris concentrations. Consequently, areas of strong foliation appear darker than areas of weak foliation in satellite imagery. As coarser resolution imagery is utilised to map large‐scale ice masses, sub‐pixel structural information is lost. Individual lineations mapped in coarser resolution imagery therefore probably comprise groups of clustered foliation at the sub‐pixel scale. Lateral narrowing measurements and calculated one‐dimensional strain across zones of longitudinal foliation are assessed as a tool for identifying large‐scale surface strain patterns, in particular large‐scale pure shear regimes. These one‐dimensional strain measurements suggest that flow‐unit boundaries are areas that undergo considerable cumulative strains. The upscaling approach used here can be applied to the largest ice masses, notably the Antarctic Ice Sheet.

Abstract:To be able to precisely estimate discharges in un-gaged streams and reconstruct hydrological features in river systems, the temporal and spatial variations of at-a-station hydraulic geometry (AHG) and their impacting factors need to be detected. To this end, the Yalong River and Upper Jinsha River, which located in southeast Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, are selected as case study. This investigation explores quantitative data on the magnitude of spatial and temporal variations in AHGs over a period of 10 years for 38 mountain reaches with drainage areas ranging from 0.53 x 10(3) to 259.18 x 10(3) km(2). Effects of ice regime and drainage area on AHG were discussed and the stability of AHG was analyzed. 42.1% of the reaches have flow velocity exponents that are greater than the river width and flow depth exponents combined. No significant spatial variation tendency is observed for AHG exponents while significant temporal variations are reported. Larger fluctuations are found for AHG exponents in annual variations compared with those in inter-annual variations. Ice regimes significantly contribute to the seasonal changes of AHGs. The relative differences of AHG coefficients (a, c, k) and exponents (b, f, m) with and without ice vary between -49.4 to 80.8% and - 70.1% to 22.6%, respectively. Compared with no ice regime, the reaches with border ice and slush ice run have smaller exponents m and Froude Number and larger coefficients c and exponents f. Besides, coefficients a and exponents m increase while coefficients k and exponents b decrease with the increase of drainage area. However, coefficients c and exponents f exhibit no tendency with drainage area changes. AHG stabilities increase with the increased stream order and drainage area. Results of this study can enrich the AHG database for mountain rivers and provide a preliminary understanding of ice effects on AHG variations.

Abstract:Long‐term records of the flow patterns and dynamics of surge‐type glaciers improve our understanding of their underlying dynamic processes, and are critical to better resolve their contribution to a changing cryosphere. We adapt a modeling approach designed to emulate glacier surging and fold kinematics using the full Stokes ice‐flow model Elmer/Ice to simulate surging of the Dusty Glacier, located in the St. Elias Mountains, Canada. We combine distributed mass‐balance and numerical ice‐flow models to reconstruct the fold kinematics of the 2001–2003 surge of the Dusty Glacier by comparing model results to Landsat‐7 and Sentinel‐2 imagery, and assess the sensitivity of centennial‐scale modeled glacier structure to different mass balance and sliding parameterizations. This study demonstrates the feasibility of using the approach to reconstruct the surface structure kinematics of a surge‐type glacier in nature, highlighting its potential application to other surge‐type glaciers and regions.

Abstract:As a heavily glaciated region, the Eastern Pamir plays a crucial role in regional water supply. However, considerable ambiguity surrounds the distribution of glacier ice thickness and the details of ice volume. Accurate data at the local scale are largely insufficient. In this study, ground-penetrating radar (GPR) was applied to assess the ice thickness at Muztagh Glacier No.16 (MG16) in Muztagh Ata, Eastern Pamir, for the first time, detailing findings from four distinct profiles, bridging the gap in regional measurements. We utilized a total of five different methods based on basic shear stress, surface velocity, and mass conservation, aimed at accurately delineating the ice volume and distribution for MG16. Verification was conducted using measured data, and an aggregated model outcome provided a unified view of ice distribution. The different models showed good agreement with the measurements, but there were differences in the unmeasured areas. The composite findings indicated the maximum ice thickness of MG16 stands at 115.87 ± 4.55 m, with an ice volume calculated at 0.27 ± 0.04 km3. This result is relatively low compared to the findings of other studies, which lies in the fact that the GPR measurements somewhat constrain the model. However, the model parameters remain the primary source of uncertainty. The results from this study can be used to enhance water resource assessments for future glacier change models.

Abstract:Glacier and ice sheet retreat exposes freshly deglaciated terrain which often contains small‐scale fragile geomorphological features which could provide insight into subglacial or submarginal processes. Subaerial exposure results in potentially rapid landscape modification or even disappearance of the minor‐relief landforms as wind, weather, water and vegetation impact on the newly exposed surface. Ongoing retreat of many ice masses means there is a growing opportunity to obtain high resolution geospatial data from glacier forelands to aid in the understanding of recent subglacial and submarginal processes. Here we used an unmanned aerial vehicle to capture close‐range aerial photography of the foreland of Isfallsglaciären, a small polythermal glacier situated in Swedish Lapland. An orthophoto and a digital elevation model with ~2 cm horizontal resolution were created from this photography using structure from motion software. These geospatial data was used to create a geomorphological map of the foreland, documenting moraines, fans, channels and flutes. The unprecedented resolution of the data enabled us to derive morphological metrics (length, width and relief) of the smallest flutes, which is not possible with other data products normally used for glacial landform metrics mapping. The map and flute metrics compare well with previous studies, highlighting the potential of this technique for rapidly documenting glacier foreland geomorphology at an unprecedented scale and resolution. The vast majority of flutes were found to have an associated stoss‐side boulder, with the remainder having a likely explanation for boulder absence (burial or erosion). Furthermore, the size of this boulder was found to strongly correlate with the width and relief of the lee‐side flute. This is consistent with the lee‐side cavity infill model of flute formation. Whether this model is applicable to all flutes, or multiple mechanisms are required, awaits further study. © 2016 The Authors. Abstract:Abstract We present a shape optimization algorithm to estimate the ice thickness distribution within a two-dimensional, non-sliding mountain glacier, given a transient surface geometry and a mass-balance distribution. The approach is based on the minimization of the surface topography misfit at the end of the glacier's evolution in the shallow ice approximation of ice flow. Neither filtering of the surface topography where its gradient vanishes nor interpolation of the basal shear stress is involved. Novelty of the presented shape optimization algorithm is the use of surface topography and mass-balance only within a time-dependent Lagrangian approach for moving-boundary glaciers. On real-world inspired geometries, it is shown to produce estimations of even better quality in smaller time than the recently proposed steady and transient inverse methods. A sensitivity analysis completes the study and evinces the method's higher susceptibility to perturbations in the surface topography than in surface mass-balance or rate factor.

Snowcover Survey over an Arctic Glacier Forefield: Contribution of Photogrammetry to Identify "Icing" Variability and Processes

Abstract:Current climate shift has significant impacts on both quality and quantity of snow precipitation. This directly influences spatial variability of the snowpack as well as cumulative snow height. Contemporary glacier retreat reorganizes periglacial morphology: while the glacier area decreases, the moraine area increases. The latter is becoming a new water storage potential almost as important as the glacier itself, but with a much more complex topography. This work hence fills one of the missing variables of the hydrological budget equation of an arctic glacier basin by providing an estimate of the snow water equivalent (SWE) of the moraine contribution. Such a result is achieved by investigating Structure from Motion (SfM) image processing applied to pictures collected from an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) as a method to produce snow depth maps over the proglacial moraine area. Several UAV campaigns were carried out on a small glacial basin in Spitsbergen (Arctic): measurements were made at the maximum snow accumulation season (late April) while reference topography maps were acquired at the end of hydrological year (late September) when the moraine is mostly free of snow. Snow depth is determined from Digital Surface Model (DSM) subtraction. Using dedicated and natural ground control points for relative positioning of the DSMs, the relative DSM georeferencing with sub-meter accuracy removes the main source of uncertainty when assessing snow depth. For areas where snow is deposited on bare rock surfaces, the correlation between avalanche probe in-situ snow depth measurements and DSM differences is excellent. Differences in ice covered areas between the two measurement techniques are attributed to the different quantities measured.

Abstract:Abstract We use a spatially distributed and physically based energy and mass balance model to derive the Østrem curve, which expresses the supraglacial debris‐related relative melt alteration versus the debris thickness, for the Djankuat Glacier, Caucasus, Russian Federation. The model is driven by meteorological data from two on‐glacier weather stations and ERA‐5 Land reanalysis data. A direct pixel‐by‐pixel comparison of the melt rates obtained from both a clean ice and debris‐covered ice mass balance model results in the quantification of debris‐related relative melt‐modification ratios, capturing the degree of melt enhancement or suppression as a function of the debris thickness. The main results show that the distinct surface features and different surface temperature/moisture and near‐surface wind regimes that persist over debris‐covered ice significantly alter the pattern of the energy and mass fluxes when compared to clean ice. Consequently, a maximum relative melt enhancement of 1.36 is modeled on the glacier for thin/patchy debris with a thickness of 0.03 m. However, insulating effects suppress sub‐debris melt under debris layers thicker than a critical debris thickness of 0.09 m. Sensitivity experiments show that especially within‐debris properties, such as the thermal conductivity and the vertical debris porosity gradient, highly impact the magnitude of the sub‐debris melt rates. Our results also highlight the scale‐dependency as well as the dynamic nature of the debris thickness‐melt relationship for changing climatic conditions, which may have significant implications for the climate change response of debris‐covered glaciers.

Abstract:Abstract. Geothermal heat flow (GHF) is the dominant factor affecting the basal thermal regime of ice sheet dynamics. But it is poorly defined for the Antarctic ice sheet. We compare the basal thermal state of the Totten Glacier catchment as simulated by eight different GHF datasets. We use a basal energy and water flow model coupled with a 3D full-Stokes ice dynamics model to estimate the basal temperature, basal friction heat and basal melting rate. In addition to the location of subglacial lakes, we use specularity content of the airborne radar returns as a two-sided constraint to discriminate between local wet or dry basal conditions and compare the returns with the basal state simulations with different GHFs. Two medium magnitude GHF distribution maps derived from seismic modelling rank well at simulating both cold- and warm-bed regions, the GHFs from Shen et al. (2020) and Shapiro and Ritzwoller (2004). The best-fit simulated result shows that most of the inland bed area is frozen. Only the central inland subglacial canyon, co-located with high specularity content, reaches the pressure melting point consistently in all the eight GHFs. Modelled basal melting rates in the slow-flowing region are generally 0–5 mm yr−1 but with local maxima of 10 mm yr−1 at the central inland subglacial canyon. The fast-flowing grounded glaciers close to the Totten ice shelf are lubricating their bases with meltwater at rates of 10–400 mm yr−1.

Abstract:<p>Change analysis of rock glaciers is crucial to analyzing the adaptation of surface and subsurface processes to changing environmental conditions at different timescales because rock glaciers are considered as potentially unstable slopes and solid water reservoirs. To quantify surface change in complex surface topographies with varying surface orientation and roughness, a full three‐dimensional (3D) change analysis is required. This study therefore proposes a novel approach for accurate 3D point cloud‐based quantification and analysis of geomorphological activity on rock glaciers. It is applied to the lower tongue area of the Äußeres Hochebenkar rock glacier, Ötztal Alps, Austria. Multi‐temporal and multi‐source topographic LiDAR data are used to quantify surface changes and to reveal their spatial and temporal characteristics at different timescales within the period 2006–2018. LiDAR‐based examinations are complemented with subsurface characteristics obtained from electrical resistivity tomography. This combined approach reveals active and variable spatial and temporal surface dynamics in the investigated area, with minimum detectable change between 0.09 and 0.65 m at 95% confidence. Given that this approach overcomes current uncertainties in established methods of differentiating complex rock glacier surfaces, we consider it a valuable addition that can be applied to objects of similar properties such as landslides or glaciers.</p>

Abstract:Abstract Direct geological information in Antarctica is limited to ice free regions along the coast, high mountain ranges, or isolated nunataks. Therefore, indirect methods are required to reveal subglacial geology and heterogeneities in crustal properties, which are critical steps toward interpreting geological history. We present a 3D crustal model of density and susceptibility distribution in the Wilkes Subglacial Basin (WSB) and the Transantarctic Mountains (TAM) based on joint inversion of airborne gravity and magnetic data. The applied “variation of information” technique enforces a coupling between inferred susceptibility and density, relating these quantities to the same gravity and magnetic sources to give an enhanced inversion result. Our model reveals a large body located in the interior of the WSB interpreted as a batholithic intrusive structure, as well as a linear dense body at the margin of the Terre Adélie Craton. Density and susceptibility relationships are used to inform the interpretation of petrophysical properties and the reconstruction of the origin of those crustal bodies. The petrophysical relationship indicates that the postulated batholitic intrusion is granitic, but independent from the Granite Harbor Igneous Complex described previously in the TAM area. Emplacement of a large volume of intrusive granites can potentially elevate local geothermal heat flow significantly. Finally, we present a new conceptual tectonic model based on the inversion results, which includes development of a passive continental margin with seaward dipping basalt horizons and magmatic underplating followed by two distinct intrusive events associated with the protracted Ross Orogen.

Seasonal Dynamics of a Temperate Tibetan Glacier Revealed by High-Resolution UAV Photogrammetry and In Situ Measurements

Abstract:The seasonal dynamic changes of Tibetan glaciers have seen little prior investigation, despite the increase in geodetic studies of multi-year changes. This study compares seasonal glacier dynamics (“cold” and “warm” seasons) in the ablation zone of Parlung No. 4 Glacier, a temperate glacier in the monsoon-influenced southeastern Tibetan Plateau, by using repeat unpiloted aerial vehicle (UAV) surveys combined with Structure-from-Motion (SfM) photogrammetry and ground stake measurements. Our results showed that the surveyed ablation zone had a mean change of −2.7 m of ice surface elevation during the period of September 2018 to October 2019 but is characterized by significant seasonal cyclic variations with ice surface elevation lifting (+2.0 m) in the cold season (September 2018 to June 2019) but lowering (−4.7 m) in the warm season (June 2019 to October 2019). Over an annual timescale, surface lowering was greatly suppressed by the resupply of ice from the glacier’s accumulation area—the annual emergence velocity compensates for about 55% of surface ablation in our study area. Cold season emergence velocities (3.0 ± 1.2 m) were ~5-times larger than those observed in the warm season (0.6 ± 1.0 m). Distinct spring precipitation patterns may contribute to these distinct seasonal signals. Such seasonal dynamic conditions are possibly critical for different glacier responses to climate change in this region of the Tibetan Plateau, and perhaps further afield.

Abstract:We use high resolution, ground-based observations of ice displacement to investigate ice deformation across the floating left-lateral shear margin of Priestley Glacier, Terra Nova Bay, Antarctica. Bare ice conditions allow us to fix survey marks directly to the glacier surface. A combination of continuous positioning of a local reference mark, and repeat positioning of a network of 33 stakes installed across a 2 km width of the shear margin are used to quantify shear strain rates and the ice response to tidal forcing over an 18-day period. Along-flow velocity observed at a continuous Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) station within the network varies by up to ∼30% of the mean speed (±28 m a −1 ) over diurnal tidal cycles, with faster flow during the falling tide and slower flow during the rising tide. Long-term deformation in the margin approximates simple shear with a small component of flow-parallel shortening. At shorter timescales, precise optical techniques allow high-resolution observations of across-flow bending in response to the ocean tide, including across-flow strains on the order of 10 –5 . An elastodynamic model informed by the field observations is used to simulate the across-flow motion and deformation. Flexure is concentrated in the shear margin, such that a non-homogeneous elastic modulus is implied to best account for the combined observations. The combined pattern of ice displacement and ice strain also depends on the extent of coupling between the ice and valley sidewall. These conclusions suggest that investigations of elastic properties made using vertical ice motion, but neglecting horizontal displacement and surface strain, will lead to incorrect conclusions about the elastic properties of ice and potentially over-simplified assumptions about the sidewall boundary condition.
