Abstract:Lago Argentino hosts a series of calving glaciers originating from the Southern Patagonian Icefield, the largest temperate ice cap of the southern hemisphere. Brazo Rico and Brazo Sur are two basins located in the southern part of Lago Argentino, where a series of high-resolution seismic profiles have allowed reconstruction of its depositional setting and sedimentary architecture, and to produce the following maps: top of the acoustic basement, top of the glacial sequence, and thickness of the glacio-lacustrine deposits. Data reveal the role of basement highs in the complex dynamic behavior of the two main glaciers, Perito Moreno and Frías glaciers, which fluctuated along Brazo Rico and Brazo Sur since the end of the Last Glacial Maximum. Their advances and retreats are testified by the presence of several moraine fronts buried beneath a generally undisturbed, glacio-lacustrine and lacustrine sequence, which records the depositional history of the southern arms of Lago Argentino.

Abstract:Lago Viedma is a proglacial lake into which the Viedma Glacier flows from the Southern Patagonian Ice Field. This glacier has rapidly lost mass in recent times, and its deglacial history is reflected in the lake's subsurface. New high‐resolution multi‐channel seismic profiles acquired in the northwestern sector of the lake have allowed us to reconstruct the bathymetry of the area and identify several small sub‐basins, which have a maximum depth of 240 m in this sector. Four seismic facies have been recognized, separated by erosional unconformities, reflecting the depositional conditions in this sector of the basin during different Quaternary sedimentation phases. There is a transitional phase from ice‐contacted deposits to subglacial deposits, probably associated with a subglacial fan, and finally a phase of lacustrine sedimentation. In addition, three depositional stages were identified within the lacustrine deposits, indicating a different sedimentary input, and the morphologies observed at the lake bottom suggest the existence of at least ten stagnations of the glacial margin. This study helps to improve the history of the retreat of the Viedma Glacier in this area during the Pleistocene/Holocene and provides a basis for further geophysical measurements aimed at mapping this remote lacustrine environment.

Abstract:Remote sensing techniques are frequently applied for the surveying of remote areas, where the use of conventional surveying techniques remains difficult and impracticable. In this paper, we focus on one of the remote glacier areas, namely the Tyndall Glacier area in the Southern Patagonian Icefield in Chile. Based on optical remote sensing data in the form of multi-spectral Sentinel-2 imagery, we analyze the extent of different snow and ice classes on the surface of the glacier by means of pixel-wise classification. Our study comprises three main steps: (1) Labeled Sentinel-2 compliant data are obtained from theoretical spectral reflectance curves, as there are no training data available for the investigated area; (2) Four different classification approaches are used and compared in their ability to identify the defined five snow and ice types, thereof two unsupervised approaches (k-means clustering and rule-based classification via snow and ice indices) and two supervised approaches (Linear Discriminant Analysis and Random Forest classifier); (3) We first focus on the pixel-wise classification of Sentinel-2 imagery, and we then use the best-performing approach for a multi-temporal analysis of the Tyndall Glacier area. While the achieved classification results reveal that all of the used classification approaches are suitable for detecting different snow and ice classes on the glacier surface, the multi-temporal analysis clearly reveals the seasonal development of the glacier. The change of snow and ice types on the glacier surface is evident, especially between the end of ablation season (April) and the end of accumulation season (September) in Southern Chile.

Abstract:The Cordillera Darwin Icefield (CDI) has experienced widespread retreat since the Little Ice Age (LIA, ∼1870 AD). Prior to this, information on outlet glacier dynamics is limited as there are few terrestrial observations and little mapped deglacial evidence, limiting our understanding of CDI dynamics on Holocene centennial to millennial timescales. Here we present a glacial geomorphological map of terrestrial landforms and features for the CDI and surrounding areas of the Tierra del Fuego archipelago. We digitized more than 8,000 glacial landforms and features covering an area of ∼13,300 km 2 from a combination of digital elevation models (DEMs) and high-resolution satellite and aerial imagery (<3 m), supported by multitemporal field mapping. This work provides a detailed geomorphological assessment for the area, summarized in a single map, that identifies three main glacial landsystem types of the Patagonian–Fuegian landscape: (i) upland glacier, (ii) lowland land-terminating, and (iii) glaciomarine fjord. The resulting map forms the basis for future chronological campaigns.

A glacial lake outburst flood associated with recent mountain glacier retreat, Patagonian Andes

Abstract:Geomorphological mapping, sedimentology, lichenometry and dendrochronology were used to assess the nature and timing of glacier recession, moraine development and catastrophic mass movements in a tributary of the Leones valley, east of the Hielo Patagónico Norte, Chile. We show that during the 'Little Ice Age' Glaciar Calafate advanced downvalley to produce a terminal moraine. Recession of the glacier from this position occurred in the 1 870s and produced a moraine dammed lake. In late 2000 a large rockfall into the lake breached the moraine and triggered a glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF) that entrained and subsequently deposited some 2 x 106 m 3 of material. We interpret this event as a delayed paraglacial response to the retreat of Glaciar Calafate during the twentieth century.

Abstract:<p>Change analysis of rock glaciers is crucial to analyzing the adaptation of surface and subsurface processes to changing environmental conditions at different timescales because rock glaciers are considered as potentially unstable slopes and solid water reservoirs. To quantify surface change in complex surface topographies with varying surface orientation and roughness, a full three‐dimensional (3D) change analysis is required. This study therefore proposes a novel approach for accurate 3D point cloud‐based quantification and analysis of geomorphological activity on rock glaciers. It is applied to the lower tongue area of the Äußeres Hochebenkar rock glacier, Ötztal Alps, Austria. Multi‐temporal and multi‐source topographic LiDAR data are used to quantify surface changes and to reveal their spatial and temporal characteristics at different timescales within the period 2006–2018. LiDAR‐based examinations are complemented with subsurface characteristics obtained from electrical resistivity tomography. This combined approach reveals active and variable spatial and temporal surface dynamics in the investigated area, with minimum detectable change between 0.09 and 0.65 m at 95% confidence. Given that this approach overcomes current uncertainties in established methods of differentiating complex rock glacier surfaces, we consider it a valuable addition that can be applied to objects of similar properties such as landslides or glaciers.</p>

Abstract:We present a glacial-related lake inventory for a region spanning 41.5° - 47° S in Patagonian Andes , where information on past glacier lake outburst floods (GLOF's) has hitherto remained significantly underreported. Analyzing remotely sensed images, we obtained data on 702 glacial-related lakes. Through detailed geomorphic assessments and manual supervision, we revised current inventories and added 35 GLOFs triggered from moraine/bedrock dammed lakes failures. The regional GLOF inventory presented contains information on 71 historical failures of moraine/bedrock dammed glacial lakes. From this database we analyzed outburst timing and managed to constrain 37 events occurrences within a period of 1 year. Around 40 % of them have occurred since the early 2000's, most of them originating from lakes probably formed as a delayed response to the glacial retreat imposed by the end of the Little Ice Age. On the other hand, we analyzed meteorological conditions for a sub-set of 10 events constrained within a 10-days period, finding a strong link between atmospheric rivers, cut-off lows impacting the southern Andes, and GLOFs. Only one case is likely to have been triggered by a Mw 4.9 earthquake. Based on topographic potential for avalanching, we estimated GLOF hazard potential, recognizing at least 3 subregions with high hazard, which moreover can be highly susceptible to climate conditions that regionally affect GLOF occurrence.

Abstract:In GPR profiles, ice is usually imaged as a mostly electromagnetic transparent facies. However, diffraction events, as well as internal layering, can be also observed. In some cases, the bedrock below glaciers is masked by dense diffractions usually interpreted as the effect of liquid water pockets inside the so-called warm ice. However, the actual physical meaning of such GPR facies is not always obvious, because it can be related also to mixed debris and ice deposits.We adopted a strategy well known in medical sciences and referred as "differential diagnosis" in order to infer which is the actual meaning of a high scattering facies imaged within the Eastern Gran Zebrù glacier (Central Italian Alps) and, more generally, of all the internal glacier features. In fact, in many cases, there is no direct information to limit the subjectivity of geophysical interpretation; therefore, we provide all the discriminative hypotheses based on both independent and integrated criteria including GPR attribute analysis, imaging effects, reflection analysis, GPR frequency evaluations combined with geomorphological and remote sensing data obtained by two photogrammetric UAV and thermal infrared surveys.On the basis of the differential diagnosis, we concluded that the high scattering zone embedded within the studied glacier is most likely related to a mixture of ice and debris probably formed during a past shrinking phase. Beside this case study, this approach could be helpful in other GPR glaciological surveys, in which the target is related not only to the bedrock detection, but also to a detailed analysis of the internal facies of a glacier.

Abstract:The effects of deglaciation on the slope stability of glacial valleys have increasing importance in the context of climate change, as they may affect the susceptibility to large-volume landslides and catastrophic cascading geohazards. On December 16th, 2017, a massive rock slide near a retreating glacier evolved into a debris-mud flow that impacted Villa Santa Lucía in the Chilean Patagonia. This event caused 22 fatalities and severe consequences for the town in terms of infrastructure, connectivity, and economic losses. The landslide occurred in a valley of volcanic dominant geology undergoing a recent deglaciation process in a paraglacial environment, and its triggering is attributed to a historical rainfall event. This work presents the three-dimensional numerical modeling and analysis of the massive rock slide event to address the contribution of glacial processes in developing progressive paraglacial failure of the Santa Lucía landslide, with the role of rainwater infiltration as a triggering factor. A thorough geological and geotechnical characterization of the area was performed, including site reconnaissance, sample retrieval, and laboratory tests. The geological configuration was reproduced through 3D numerical modeling of the glacial stages considering the area's glacial history. The influence of the historical hydrometeorological event as a triggering factor was simulated and addressed to identify the main features related to the development of the failure initiated at the toe of the slope. The results suggest that the mechanism of deglaciation significantly damaged the rock slope, increasing stress concentration, forming critically stressed joints, and acting as critical factors in preparing the conditions for the landslide to occur. The behavior of the geological structures in the slope under glacial retreat suggests a progressive development of the failure, with the infiltrated rainwater effectively inducing a critical condition of the rock slope, as it reached high saturation in a short time, triggering the landslide. The findings provide meaningful information towards a better understanding of the behavior of rock slopes under paraglacial conditions, considering more realistic glacial influence in time, of critical importance for the design of monitoring and detection tools for strategic development and decision management related to areas where severe geohazards might happen, like the collapse of deglaciated mountain areas where glaciers are retreating.

Abstract:Alpine glacial erosion exerts a first-order control on mountain topography and sediment production, but its mechanisms are poorly understood. Observational data capable of testing glacial erosion and transport laws in glacial models are mostly lacking. New insights, however, can be gained from detrital tracer thermochronology. Detrital tracer thermochronology works on the premise that thermochronometer bedrock ages vary systematically with elevation, and that detrital downstream samples can be used to infer the source elevation sectors of sediments. We analyze six new detrital samples of different grain sizes (sand and pebbles) from glacial deposits and the modern river channel integrated with data from 18 previously analyzed bedrock samples from an elevation transect in the Leones Valley, Northern Patagonian Icefield, Chile (46.7 degrees S). We present 622 new detrital zircon (U-Th)/He (ZHe) single-grain analyses and 22 new bedrock ZHe analyses for two of the bedrock samples to determine age reproducibility. Results suggest that glacial erosion was focused at and below the Last Glacial Maximum and neoglacial equilibrium line altitudes, supporting previous modeling studies. Furthermore, grain age distributions from different grain sizes (sand, pebbles) might indicate differences in erosion mechanisms, including mass movements at steep glacial valley walls. Finally, our results highlight complications and opportunities in assessing glacigenic environments, such as dynamics of sediment production, transport, transient storage, and final deposition, that arise from settings with large glacio-fluvial catchments.

Abstract:The Antarctic Peninsula shows considerable spatial variability concerning its glaciological characteristics. It has also been subjected to severe climate changes, with reported glaciological consequences. However, such changes did not occur uniformly across the region. The present study aimed to characterize the glaciers of the Antarctic Peninsula geomorphologically and identify the spatial patterns of changes in their frontal position, generating an inventory of these features that will be part of the Global Land Ice Measurements from Space project. The study comprised the period between 1991 and 2015. We used ASTER imagery and ASTER GDEM and RAMP DEM digital elevation models to map the limits of glacial drainage basins. Landsat TM and ETM + data and the Antarctic Digital Database were used in areas not covered by ASTER images. We applied a supervised classification method to the satellite images to generate a mask of ice-free areas. The inventory of glaciers resulted in the delimitation of 1906 drainage basins between latitudes 61°S and 73°S, corresponding to an area of 476,507.83 km2. Ice-free areas occupied 5363.38 km2 (1% of the total). Between 2001 and 2015, 1339.68 km2 of ice was lost, corresponding to 1093 glaciers, while the area covered by glacier advance was estimated in 91.34 km2, corresponding to 255 glaciers, and 240 oscillating glaciers (gaining and losing ice mass). Thirty-nine percent of glaciers showed a slight retreat, 21% marked retreat, and 9% advanced during the period studied. The 16 ice shelves comprised an area of 137,677.16 km2, from which only 128,436.08 km2 remained until 2015. Eleven ice shelves experienced retreat during the period studied. We identified spatiotemporal variability patterns of the glaciers using statistical analysis by implementing empirical orthogonal functions (EOF), in which the first two EOFs represented approximately 87% of the space-time variability pattern of the glaciers. The glaciers classified as outlet glaciers (61%) were identified as the most sensitive to change, especially regarding frontal retreat. The glacial catchments classified as calving and floating were the most sensitive considering any change both in advance and retreat of their frontal area.

Abstract:Abstract Calving glaciers respond quickly to atmospheric variability through ice dynamic adjustment. Particularly, single weather extremes may cause changes in ice-flow velocity and terminus position. Occasionally, this can lead to substantial event-driven mass loss at the ice front. We examine changes in terminus position, ice-flow velocity, and calving flux at the grounded lacustrine Schiaparelli Glacier in the Cordillera Darwin using geo-referenced time-lapse camera images and remote sensing data (Sentinel-1) from 2015 to 2022. Lake-level records, lake discharge measurements, and a coupled energy and mass balance model provide insight into the subglacial water discharge. We use downscaled reanalysis data (ERA-5) to identify climate extremes and track land-falling atmospheric rivers to investigate the ice-dynamic response on possible atmospheric drivers. Meltwater controls seasonal variations in ice-flow velocity, with an efficient subglacial drainage system developing during the warm season and propagating up-glacier. Calving accounts for 4.2% of the ice loss. Throughout the year, warm spells, wet spells, and landfalling atmospheric rivers promote calving. The progressive thinning of the ice destabilizes the terminus position, highlighting the positive feedback between glacier thinning, near-terminus ice-flow acceleration, and calving flux.

Abstract:Glacier and ice sheet retreat exposes freshly deglaciated terrain which often contains small‐scale fragile geomorphological features which could provide insight into subglacial or submarginal processes. Subaerial exposure results in potentially rapid landscape modification or even disappearance of the minor‐relief landforms as wind, weather, water and vegetation impact on the newly exposed surface. Ongoing retreat of many ice masses means there is a growing opportunity to obtain high resolution geospatial data from glacier forelands to aid in the understanding of recent subglacial and submarginal processes. Here we used an unmanned aerial vehicle to capture close‐range aerial photography of the foreland of Isfallsglaciären, a small polythermal glacier situated in Swedish Lapland. An orthophoto and a digital elevation model with ~2 cm horizontal resolution were created from this photography using structure from motion software. These geospatial data was used to create a geomorphological map of the foreland, documenting moraines, fans, channels and flutes. The unprecedented resolution of the data enabled us to derive morphological metrics (length, width and relief) of the smallest flutes, which is not possible with other data products normally used for glacial landform metrics mapping. The map and flute metrics compare well with previous studies, highlighting the potential of this technique for rapidly documenting glacier foreland geomorphology at an unprecedented scale and resolution. The vast majority of flutes were found to have an associated stoss‐side boulder, with the remainder having a likely explanation for boulder absence (burial or erosion). Furthermore, the size of this boulder was found to strongly correlate with the width and relief of the lee‐side flute. This is consistent with the lee‐side cavity infill model of flute formation. Whether this model is applicable to all flutes, or multiple mechanisms are required, awaits further study. © 2016 The Authors. Seismic stratigraphy of the northern area of Punta Bandera (Lago Argentino, southern Patagonia)

Abstract:Lago Argentino is one of the largest lakes in Patagonia. Some of its arms host calving glaciers that flow from the southern Patagonian Ice Field. The best known of these is the Perito Moreno glacier. Although recent studies have reconstructed part of glacier dynamics in the southern arms of Lago Argentino, there are no studies yet for the northern arms. A high-resolution seismic survey was carried out in the northern area of Punta Bandera, i.e., in the sector between the Brazo Norte and the Canal de los Témpanos to characterize the stratigraphy of the sedimentary fill of the lake and identify the main unconformities related to glacial dynamics. Eight seismic facies grouped into two seismic units were mapped, and ten unconformities were recognized. Based on the acquired data, a bathymetric grid was created for the first time to obtain a morphological representation of the lake floor and access to a previously unmapped area of Lago Argentino. The analysis of the geometries and acoustic properties of the different seismic facies identified, correlated with the available information on land moraines, has allowed us to partially reconstruct the advance and retreat phases of the glacial lobes that formerly were present in the two arms of the lake, although the temporal assignments are still speculative due to the lack of calibrations with boreholes. Nevertheless, this study provides important information for deciphering the glaciation history of a key sector of the southern Patagonian Ice Field during the late Pleistocene/Holocene. The data show that the northern and southern areas have different lake floor morphologies, with the southern, shallower area of the Canal de los Témpanos being glaciated first than the northern, more overdeepened area of the Brazo Norte.

Abstract:Abstract The southern extreme location and the natural landscapes, highly modelled by glaciers during the Quaternary period, give Tierra del Fuego a unique opportunity to attract visitors worldwide. Its glacial landforms are geodiversity resources that are witness to global climate changes as natural processes. Therefore, this study aims to highlight different glacial landforms considering their geodidactic potential for educational information in terms of geographical study. Sixteen georesources connected by routes are analysed, using bibliographic research, fieldwork and a datasheet designed ad-hoc. Four of them were formed during middle Pleistocene glaciations and the other twelve during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), out of which two also represent the Holocene, which happens to be the youngest glaciation.
Palaeolake Jeinimeni and ice-marginal geomorphology of the central Patagonian Lago General Carrera/Buenos Aires ice-lobe (46.5°S)

Abstract:Robust geomorphological interpretations of ice-marginal glacial, meltwater and palaeolake landforms are needed to constrain models of landform evolution that can be used to underpin high-resolution geochronologies of deglaciation. The Lago General Carrera/Bueno Aires (LGCBA) ice lobe of the former Patagonian Ice Sheet is one of the most researched in Patagonia, yet there remain contrasting landform evolution models partly because the spatiotemporal relationships between landforms in the LGCBA basin and tributary valleys have not been fully investigated. To this end we present a detailed, high-resolution glacial geomorphological map of the Los Antiguos sector of the LGCBA basin, and the tributary Río Jeinimeni valley, alongside sediment-landform assemblages from a broad suite of ice-marginal, subglacial, glaciolacustrine, glaciofluvial and paraglacial landforms. We introduce evidence for a previously unmapped ice-dammed lake within the Jeinimeni valley, which may have existed during the Last Glacial Maximum. Multiple isolated, ice-marginal proglacial lakes, which formed during the recession of the LGCBA ice lobe, were also mapped. The landform evidence is synthesised into a refined landscape evolution model for the LGCBA basin and Jeinimeni valley during the Last Glacial Interglacial Transition. The data presented demonstrate that previously reconstructed high LGCBA lake-level stands above 500 m asl were likely glaciolacustrine landforms created by ice-marginal lakes dammed by the LGCBA ice lobe. The mapping in the Jeinimeni valley highlights the potential for renewed dating investigations of landforms in tributary valleys to provide maximum limiting ages for the retreat of their associated glaciers. Furthermore, the identification of glaciolacustrine varved sediments associated with palaeolake Jeinimeni and the Los Antiguos sector of the LGCBA palaeolake, highlights the potential of these annually-resolved archives to resolve spatiotemporal dynamics of main ice-lobe/tributary glaciers/lakes to improve palaeoenvironmental and palaeoclimatic reconstructions in the region.
