Abstract:In high-altitude regions, such as the Peruvian Andes, understanding the transformation of precipitation types under climate change is critical to the sustainability of water resources and the survival of glaciers. In this study, we investigate the distribution and types of precipitation on a tropical glacier in the Peruvian Central Andes. We utilized data from an optical-laser disdrometer and compact weather station installed at 4709 m ASL, combined with future climate scenarios from the CMIP6 project, to model potential future changes in precipitation types. Our findings highlight that increasing temperatures could lead to significant reductions in solid-phase precipitation, including snow, graupel and hail, with implications for the mass balance of Andean glaciers. For instance, a 2 °C rise might result in less than 10% of precipitation as solid, in regard to the present day, transforming the hydrological processes of the region. The two future climate scenarios from the CMIP6 project, SSP2-4.5 and SSP5-8.5, offer a broad perspective on potential climate outcomes that could impact precipitation patterns in the Andes. Our study underscores the need to revisit and expand our understanding of high-altitude precipitation in the face of climate change, paving the way for improved water resource management strategies and sustainable glacier preservation efforts in these fragile ecosystems.

Abstract:Abstract Calving glaciers respond quickly to atmospheric variability through ice dynamic adjustment. Particularly, single weather extremes may cause changes in ice-flow velocity and terminus position. Occasionally, this can lead to substantial event-driven mass loss at the ice front. We examine changes in terminus position, ice-flow velocity, and calving flux at the grounded lacustrine Schiaparelli Glacier in the Cordillera Darwin using geo-referenced time-lapse camera images and remote sensing data (Sentinel-1) from 2015 to 2022. Lake-level records, lake discharge measurements, and a coupled energy and mass balance model provide insight into the subglacial water discharge. We use downscaled reanalysis data (ERA-5) to identify climate extremes and track land-falling atmospheric rivers to investigate the ice-dynamic response on possible atmospheric drivers. Meltwater controls seasonal variations in ice-flow velocity, with an efficient subglacial drainage system developing during the warm season and propagating up-glacier. Calving accounts for 4.2% of the ice loss. Throughout the year, warm spells, wet spells, and landfalling atmospheric rivers promote calving. The progressive thinning of the ice destabilizes the terminus position, highlighting the positive feedback between glacier thinning, near-terminus ice-flow acceleration, and calving flux.

Abstract:Understanding the response of Himalayan glaciers to global warming is vital because of their role as a water source for the Asian subcontinent. However, great uncertainties still exist on the climate drivers of past and present glacier changes across scales. Here, we analyse continuous hourly climate station data from a glacierized elevation (Pyramid station, Mount Everest) since 1994 together with other ground observations and climate reanalysis. We show that a decrease in maximum air temperature and precipitation occurred during the last three decades at Pyramid in response to global warming. Reanalysis data suggest a broader occurrence of this effect in the glacierized areas of the Himalaya. We hypothesize that the counterintuitive cooling is caused by enhanced sensible heat exchange and the associated increase in glacier katabatic wind, which draws cool air downward from higher elevations. The stronger katabatic winds have also lowered the elevation of local wind convergence, thereby diminishing precipitation in glacial areas and negatively affecting glacier mass balance. This local cooling may have partially preserved glaciers from melting and could help protect the periglacial environment.

Abstract:Andean glaciers are among the fastest shrinking and largest contributors to sea level rise on Earth. They also represent crucial water resources in many tropical and semi-arid mountain catchments. Yet the magnitude of the recent ice loss is still debated. Here we present Andean glacier mass changes (from 10° N to 56° S) between 2000 and 2018 using time series of digital elevation models derived from ASTER stereo images. The total mass change over this period was −22.9 ± 5.9 Gt yr−1 (−0.72 ± 0.22 m w.e. yr−1 (m w.e., metres of water equivalent)), with the most negative mass balances in the Patagonian Andes (−0.78 ± 0.25 m w.e. yr−1) and the Tropical Andes (−0.42 ± 0.24 m w.e. yr−1), compared to relatively moderate losses (−0.28 ± 0.18 m w.e. yr−1) in the Dry Andes. Subperiod analysis (2000–2009 versus 2009–2018) revealed a steady mass loss in the tropics and south of 45° S. Conversely, a shift from a slightly positive to a strongly negative mass balance was measured between 26 and 45° S. In the latter region, the drastic glacier loss in recent years coincides with the extremely dry conditions since 2010 and partially helped to mitigate the negative hydrological impacts of this severe and sustained drought. These results provide a comprehensive, high-resolution and multidecadal data set of recent Andes-wide glacier mass changes that constitutes a relevant basis for the calibration and validation of hydrological and glaciological models intended to project future glacier changes and their hydrological impacts.

Abstract:The impact of global climate change on glaciers has drawn significant attention; however, limited research has been conducted to comprehend the consequences of glacier melting on the associated formation and evolution of glacial lakes. This study presents a semi-automated methodology developed on the cloud platforms Google Earth Engine and Google Colab to effectively detect dynamic changes in the glaciers as well as glacial and non-glacial lakes of the Cordillera Real, Bolivia, using over 200 Landsat images from 1984 to 2021. We found that the study area experienced a rise in temperature and precipitation, resulting in a substantial decline in glacier coverage and a simultaneous increase in both the total number and total area of lakes. A strong correlation between glacier area and the extent of natural glacier-fed lakes highlights the significant downstream impact of glacier recession on water bodies. Over the study period, glaciers reduced their total area by 42%, with recent years showing a deceleration in glacier recession, aligning with the recent stabilization observed in the area of natural glacier-fed lakes. Despite these overall trends, many smaller lakes, especially non-glacier-fed ones, decreased in size, attributed to seasonal and inter-annual variations in lake inflow caused by climate variability. These findings suggest the potential decline of natural lakes amid ongoing climate changes, prompting alterations in natural landscapes and local water resources. The study reveals the response of glaciers and lakes to climate variations, including the contribution of human-constructed water reservoirs, providing valuable insights into crucial aspects of future water resources in the Cordillera Real.

Abstract:A 136-m-long drill core of sediments was recovered from tropical high-attitude Lake Titicaca, Bolivia-Peru, enabling a reconstruction of past climate that spans four cycles of regional glacial advance and retreat and that is estimated to extend continuously over the last 370,000 yr. Within the errors of the age model, the periods of regional glacial advance and retreat are concordant respectively with global glacial and interglacial stages. Periods of ice advance in the southern tropical Andes generally were periods of positive water balance, as evidenced by deeper and fresher conditions in Lake Titicaca. Conversely, reduced glaciation occurred during periods of negative water balance and shallow closed-basin conditions in the lake. The apparent coincidence of positive water balance of Lake Titicaca and glacial growth in the adjacent Andes with Northern Hemisphere ice sheet expansion implies that regional water balance and glacial mass balance are strongly influenced by global-scale temperature changes, as well as by precessional forcing of the South American summer monsoon. Abstract:Glaciers are one of the vital proxy indicators of contemporary climate change. In recent times, there has been a general trend of glacier retreat; however, the glacier's reaction to climate change is variable within the Hindu Kush (HK) and Karakoram region. Considering the significance of this region's glaciers to water availability, changes in glacier area and volume, climate change impacts, and their socio-economic impacts on the habitations living downstream, it becomes critical to evaluate the response of glaciers to climate change at a local level in this region. We present the response of glaciers of the Rongdo basin, eastern Karakoram region, to climate change for the last five decades based on the study carried out using satellite data and field observations. By analysis of the remote sensing data from CORONA, US Military Agency Photograph, Landsat series of satellites, and ASTER DEM, we created a detailed and updated inventory of the glaciers in the Rongdo basin and derived glacier area information for different time periods. Results exhibit that some of the glaciers in the study area have increased while others decreased over time, with a total deglaciation of 6.8% over the last decades. In general, glaciers indicate an inverse relationship between glacier size and area loss. However, there has been a state of expansion in the glacier cover that started somewhere after the 1990s to 2000 and continued up to 2020, thereby corroborating the Karakoram anomaly at a local level in concurrence with the earlier studies.

Contrasting climate change impact on river flows from high-altitude catchments in the Himalayan and Andes Mountains

Abstract:Mountain ranges are the world's natural water towers and provide water resources for millions of people. However, their hydrological balance and possible future changes in river flow remain poorly understood because of high meteorological variability, physical inaccessibility, and the complex interplay between climate, cryosphere, and hydrological processes. Here, we use a state-of-the art glacio-hydrological model informed by data from high-altitude observations and the latest climate change scenarios to quantify the climate change impact on water resources of two contrasting catchments vulnerable to changes in the cryosphere. The two study catchments are located in the Central Andes of Chile and in the Nepalese Himalaya in close vicinity of densely populated areas. Although both sites reveal a strong decrease in glacier area, they show a remarkably different hydrological response to projected climate change. In the Juncal catchment in Chile, runoff is likely to sharply decrease in the future and the runoff seasonality is sensitive to projected climatic changes. In the Langtang catchment in Nepal, future water availability is on the rise for decades to come with limited shifts between seasons. Owing to the high spatiotemporal resolution of the simulations and process complexity included in the modeling, the response times and the mechanisms underlying the variations in glacier area and river flow can be well constrained. The projections indicate that climate change adaptation in Central Chile should focus on dealing with a reduction in water availability, whereas in Nepal preparedness for flood extremes should be the policy priority.
Targeting the Source of Fine Sediment and Associated Geochemical Elements by Using Novel Fingerprinting Methods in Proglacial Tropical Highlands (Cordillera Blanca, Perú)

Abstract:In the Cordillera Blanca, the glaciers delineated by some of the highest peaks in the tropical Peruvian Andes have experienced a fast retreat over the last few decades. At the foot of Artesonraju Peak, the glacier‐fed river conveys fine sediments to Parón Lake, which is enclosed in the proglacial area created by the retreating glaciers of the unique confluence of the Huandoy, Chacraraju, Nevado Caraz and Artesonraju peaks (above 6000 m.a.s.l.). This research addresses the sediment contributions of main glacial landforms to sediment mixtures delivered to the river and lake system (1.6 km2) by applying novel conservativeness and consistency methods for tracer selection and a frequentist unmixing model. A total of 27 surface soil and sediment samples (0–3 cm) were collected from moraines, alluvial fans and recent colluvium, and 10 composite sediment mixtures, including suspended sediments, were collected to identify the sediment provenance. The unmixing results reveal large variability of the contributing sources related to their predominance and the locations of the mixtures. The largest contributions were from moraines, in percentages varying from 28% to as much as 77%. Alluvial fans contributed between 23 and 47% of the sediments, and colluvium material contributed the least, between 6 and 28%. At the time of sampling, ice melt discharge incising moraines and alluvial fans and eroding riverbanks were the main mechanisms of fine sediment delivery. Runoff over the bare surfaces of recently exposed moraines and the lack of vegetation cover in very active landforms also control sediment mobilisation. Overall, highly dynamic changes in this paraglacial environment involve active sediment fluxes accompanying snow and ice melt. Our results indicate that in high tropical mountains, shrinking glaciers expose new surfaces of glacial materials, which deliver fine sediments. Exploring the Fingerprints of Past Rain-on-Snow Events in a Central Andean Mountain Range Basin Using Satellite Imagery

Abstract:Rain-on-snow (ROS) events can alter nival regimes and increase snowmelt, peak river flow, and reduce water storage. However, detection of ROS events is challenging and only the most intense and obvious cases are identified. Rain is known to reduce snow cover and decrease near-infrared reflectance due to increased grain size. This study explored the fingerprints of ROS events on mountain snowpack with a simple typology that classifies changes in snow reflectance using fifteen years of MODIS imagery, reanalysis, and surface hydrometeorological data. The Maipo River Basin, with strong nival regime and a steep topography, in the western Andean mountain range was selected as a case study. Statistical analysis showed two distinct and opposite responses in the near infrared reflectance distribution of snow-covered pixels after precipitation, consistent with the typology for rain or snow events. For the probable ROS events, the daily maximum and minimum temperature increased in the days preceding the event and subsequently decreased, in some cases followed by a less consistent response in river flow. Although much remains to be studied, this approach can be used to expand historical records and improve modelling and detection schemes.

Abstract:The accelerated decline of tropical Andean glaciers is affecting the water cycle of mountains in the region. In the Cordillera Real (Bolivia) on the Huayna-Potosí peak (6088 m a.s.l.), the rapid retreat of the Oeste Glacier is exposing new rock outcrops and glacial materials. Changes in the hydrological regime by glacier retreat are likely to modify the supply of sediments and subsequently affect the geochemical transfer of particle-bound elements within proglacial and downstream ecosystems. To address this issue, a sampling campaign in the proglacial area of Huayna-Potosí aimed to identify and collect sediments from the primary active landforms. To characterise elemental transfer and identify sediment provenance using fingerprinting techniques, streambed sediments were collected along the main stream from the glacier tongue at 5002 m a.s.l. to a wetland shallow lake at 4700 m a.s.l.. Geomorphological features control the production of fine particles and the distribution of particle-bound geochemical elements. Complex processes of solubilization, mobilisation, and retention govern the elemental transfer. Significant increases in 238 U, as well as some major elements, were observed in the surface lake sediments, while Pb, Cr, and Cu decreased, and 137 Cs was not detected. The spatial distribution patterns of geochemical elements and the assessment of the sediment provenance indicate that deglaciation fosters geochemical processes and the elemental transfer dynamics in the wetlands. Moraines and colluvium were found to be the primary contributors to sediment yield (93 %) while the rich organic soils in swamps contributed the least (7 %). The enhanced supply of sediments to the shallow lake in parallel to glacier decline may affect water quality and bring about further changes in the wetlands. Identifying primary sediment sources is essential for water management. Our findings enhance understanding of the compositional characteristics of mobilised sediment and their variations, aiding in more effective resource management to preserve these high-altitude wetlands.

Abstract:The impacts of the accelerated glacier retreat in recent decades on glacier runoff changes are still unknown in most Andean catchments, increasing uncertainties in estimating water availability. This particularly affects the outer tropics and Dry Andes, heavily impacted by prolonged droughts. Current global estimates overlook climatic and morphometric disparities, which significantly influence model parameters, among Andean glaciers. Meanwhile, local studies have used different approaches to estimate glacier runoff in a few catchments. Improving 21st-century glacier runoff projections relies on calibrating and validating models using corrected historical climate inputs and calibrated parameters across diverse glaciological zones. Here, we simulate glacier evolution and related runoff changes between the periods 2000–2009 and 2010–2019 across 786 Andean catchments (11 282 km 2 of glacierized area, 11° N to 55° S) using the Open Global Glacier Model (OGGM). TerraClimate atmospheric variables were corrected using in situ data, getting a mean temperature bias by up to 2.1 °C and enhanced monthly precipitation. Glacier mass balance and volume were calibrated, where melt factor and the Glen A parameter exhibited significant alignment with varying environmental conditions. Simulation outcomes were validated against in situ data in three documented catchments (with a glacierized area > 8 %) and monitored glaciers. Our results at the Andes scale reveal an average reduction of 8.3 % in glacier volume and a decrease of 2.2 % in surface area between the periods 2000–2009 and 2010–2019. Comparing these two periods, glacier and climate variations have led to a 12 % increase in mean annual glacier melt (86.5 m 3 s −1 ) and a decrease in rainfall on glaciers of − 2 % ( − 7.6 m 3 s −1 ) across the Andes, with both variables comprising the glacier runoff. We confirmed the utility of our corrected regional simulations of glacier runoff contribution at the catchment scale, where our estimations align with previous studies (e.g., Maipo 34° S, Chile) as well as provide new insights on the seasonal glaciers' largest contribution (e.g., La Paz 16° S, Bolivia) and new estimates of glacier runoff contribution (e.g., Baker 47° S, Chile).

Abstract:Remote sensing techniques are frequently applied for the surveying of remote areas, where the use of conventional surveying techniques remains difficult and impracticable. In this paper, we focus on one of the remote glacier areas, namely the Tyndall Glacier area in the Southern Patagonian Icefield in Chile. Based on optical remote sensing data in the form of multi-spectral Sentinel-2 imagery, we analyze the extent of different snow and ice classes on the surface of the glacier by means of pixel-wise classification. Our study comprises three main steps: (1) Labeled Sentinel-2 compliant data are obtained from theoretical spectral reflectance curves, as there are no training data available for the investigated area; (2) Four different classification approaches are used and compared in their ability to identify the defined five snow and ice types, thereof two unsupervised approaches (k-means clustering and rule-based classification via snow and ice indices) and two supervised approaches (Linear Discriminant Analysis and Random Forest classifier); (3) We first focus on the pixel-wise classification of Sentinel-2 imagery, and we then use the best-performing approach for a multi-temporal analysis of the Tyndall Glacier area. While the achieved classification results reveal that all of the used classification approaches are suitable for detecting different snow and ice classes on the glacier surface, the multi-temporal analysis clearly reveals the seasonal development of the glacier. The change of snow and ice types on the glacier surface is evident, especially between the end of ablation season (April) and the end of accumulation season (September) in Southern Chile.

Current glaciers in Mexico are those inherited from the Last Glacial Maximum, (26000 - 19000 years before the present), increasing in size during the period of the Little Ice Age (1300 to 1850 common era), and they are unique in several ways; they are located at 19° north latitude, and they received snow precipitation from both the Pacific Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico (Atlantic Ocean). Research on glacial chronology, physical glaciology, and glacial geochemistry at Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México has provided valuable information on climate and environmental changes at different time scales, from millennial to decadal, and even annual. The first part of this work deals with the reconstruction of the glacial history in Mexico and establishing a glacial chronology from the Last Glacial Maximum to the Little Ice Age. The second part of this work focuses on monitoring recent changes (the last 60 years, 1960s to 2023) of the glacier extent on Iztaccíhuatl, Popocatépetl, and Citlaltépetl (the three highest mountains in Mexico), as well as having an updated inventory of all the glaciers at those mountains. Changes in glacier extent and thickness of ice are directly related to the increase in air temperature, variation in precipitation patterns, and glacier dynamics on some of the last glaciers of the northern tropics. The third part or this work focuses on a compilation of geochemical data from 17 years (from 2006 to 2013) of sampling ice (shallow ice cores) and snow at Iztaccíhuatl and Citlaltépetl glaciers. This database has the potential for providing interesting and useful information on natural and anthropogenic-induced changes related to the occurrence of heavy metals in tropical glaciers in the northern hemisphere of North America. Black carbon concentrations analyzed in snow and glacier ice, and preliminary data on stable isotopes of Zn, also add information on natural vs. anthropogenic sources of heavy metals in central Mexico.

Abstract:Snow patterns in ice-free areas of Greenland play important roles in ecosystems. Within a changing climate, a comprehensive understanding of the snow responses to climate change is of interest to anticipate forthcoming dynamics in these areas. In this study, we analyze the future snowpack evolution of a polar maritime Arctic location, Qeqertarsuaq (Disko Island, Central-Western Greenland). A physically-based snow model (FSM2) is validated and forced with CMIP6 projections for SSP2–4.5 and SSP5–8.5 greenhouse gasses emission scenarios, using two models: CanESM5 and MIROC6. The future snowpack evolution is assessed through four key seasonal (October to May) snow climate indicators: snow depth, snow days, snowfall fraction and ablation rate. Comparison against the observed air temperature for the reference climate period demonstrates superior accuracies for MIROC6 SSP2.4–5, with anomalies at 19 %, compared to CanESM5 SSP5.8–5 (25 %) and CanESM5 SSP2.4–5 (78 %). In terms of precipitation, CanESM5 SSP2.4–5 and SSP2.4–5 exhibit smaller anomalies against the observed data (5 %) in contrast to MIROC6 SSP2.4–5 (15 %) and MIROC6 SSP2.8–5 (17 %). Results demonstrate distinct snowpack responses to climate change depending on the model and emission scenario. For CanESM5, seasonal snow depth anomalies with respect to the reference period range from – 38 % (SSP2–4.5, 2040–2050 period) to – 74 % (SSP5–8.5, 2090–2100 period). MIROC6 projects lower snowpack reductions, with a decrease ranging from – 38 % (SSP2–4.5, 2040–2050 period) to – 57 % (SSP5–8.5, 2090–2100 period). Similar reductions are anticipated for snowfall and snow days. Changes in the snowpack evolution are primarily driven by positive trends in downwelling longwave radiation and air temperature. The projected increase in precipitation by the mid to late 21st century will lead to more frequent rain-on-snow events, intensifying snowpack melting. These findings help enhance the comprehension of future snow dynamics in the ice-free zones of Greenland, as well as the associated hydrological and ecological changes.

Abstract:According to studies by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), tropical mountainous areas are experiencing increasingly unfavorable climatic conditions regarding geohazards due to a heightened occurrence of intense rainfall events. These climatic shifts contribute to heightened geological risks, notably an elevated frequency of landslides, exacerbating the challenges faced by these regions. There is an urgent need to understand and measure how rainfall variability affects geo-hydrological hazards, which remain difficult to determine and predict. The complex and non-linear space-time relationships and dynamics of rainfall, El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO), and landslides in the Tropical Andean Mountain region in Colombia require an adequate analysis and understanding of their link in terms of its spatial and temporal component at different scales. By evaluation in annual, seasonal, and monthly scales, additional insights on the relationships using a wavelet spectral analysis and a space-time permutation scan statistics method using SaTScan TM are provided. In this study, a space-time and frequency analysis of landslides using a 42-year (1981–2022) rainfall and Multivariate ENSO Index v2.0 time series is presented. According to the results, landslides closely aligned with rainfall patterns, exhibiting a bimodal annual cycle. The ENSO added complexity, with La Niña years leading to more frequent landslides throughout the year and El Niño years showing concentrated occurrences in specific months. This study highlights the influence of rainfall patterns and antecedent rainfall on landslide occurrence, the impact of ENSO phases on rainfall and landslides, and the increasing trend of landslides in Colombia.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Glacier and permafrost hazards such as glacial‐lake outburst floods and rock–ice avalanches cause significant socio‐economic damages worldwide, and these processes may increase in frequency and magnitude if the atmospheric temperature rises. In the extratropical Andes nearly 200 human deaths were linked to these processes during the twentieth century. We analysed bibliographical sources and satellite images to document the glacier and permafrost dynamics that have caused socio‐economic damages in this region in historic time (including glacial lake outburst floods, ice and rock–ice avalanches and lahars) to unravel their causes and geomorphological impacts. In the extratropical Andes, at least 15 ice‐dammed lakes and 16 moraine‐dammed lakes have failed since the eighteenth century, causing dozens of floods. Some floods rank amongst the largest events ever recorded (5000 × 10 6 m 3 and 229 × 10 6 m 3 , respectively). Outburst flood frequency has increased in the last three decades, partially as a consequence of long‐term (decades to centuries) climatic changes, glaciers shrinkage, and lake growth. Short‐term (days to weeks) meteorological conditions (i.e. intense and/or prolonged rainfall and high temperature that increased meltwater production) have also triggered outburst floods and mass movements. Enormous mass failures of glaciers and permafrost (> 10 × 10 6 m 3 ) have impacted lakes, glaciers, and snow‐covered valleys, initiating chain reactions that have ultimately resulted in lake tsunamis and far‐reaching (> 50 km) flows. The eruption of ice‐covered volcanoes has also caused dozens of damaging lahars with volumes up to 45 × 10 6 m 3 . Despite the importance of these events, basic information about their occurrence (e.g. date, causes, and geomorphological impact), which is well established in other mountain ranges, is absent in the extratropical Andes. A better knowledge of the processes involved can help to forecast and mitigate these events. Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
