Abstract:The Polar Pennsylvania State University–National Center for Atmospheric Research Fifth‐Generation Mesoscale Model (Polar MM5) regional climate model was run over the North Atlantic region for 1991–2000. We analyze 24‐km output over the Greenland ice sheet to evaluate spatial and temporal variability of the surface mass balance and its subcomponents. The model output is compared with 3 years of automatic weather station (AWS) data from 17 sites to identify biases. Using the in situ data, we derive simple corrections for biases in melt energy and in water vapor fluxes from the surface and from blowing snow. The simulated accumulation rate is in agreement with AWS and snow pit observations. Estimates for runoff and the surface mass balance distribution over the ice sheet are produced using modeled melt volume and a meltwater retention scheme. From the decade investigated, the magnitude of interannual variability in surface mass balance components is tentatively established. The largest variability is concentrated along the ice sheet margin, where both accumulation and ablation rates are largest. The simulated interannual fluctuations suggest a large absolute variability, ±187 km3 yr−1 for total ice sheet surface mass balance. Variability in simulated equilibrium line altitude is suggestive of a dominance of thermal variability in the south with increasing importance of accumulation variability with increasing latitude. Empirical functions for the sensitivity of surface mass balance to temperature and precipitation anomalies are presented. The precise locations and regions of maximum and minimum surface energy and mass fluxes are suggested. Using an estimate for iceberg discharge and bottom melting, the total ice sheet mass balance is estimated be −78 km3 yr−1, producing 2.2 mm of eustatic sea level rise over the 1991–2000 decade and contributing 15% to the observed (1.5 mm yr−1) global sea level rise. The more negative mass balance is attributed to including blowing‐snow sublimation loss and to regional warming in the 1990s.

Abstract:The surface snow density of glaciers and ice sheets is of fundamental importance in converting volume to mass in both altimetry and surface mass balance studies, yet it is often poorly constrained. Site-specific surface snow densities are typically derived from empirical relations based on temperature and wind speed. These parameterizations commonly calculate the average density of the top meter of snow, thereby systematically overestimating snow density at the actual surface. Therefore, constraining surface snow density to the top 0.1 m can improve boundary conditions in high-resolution firn-evolution modeling. We have compiled an extensive dataset of 200 point measurements of surface snow density from firn cores and snow pits on the Greenland ice sheet. We find that surface snow density within 0.1 m of the surface has an average value of 315 kg m−3 with a standard deviation of 44 kg m−3, and has an insignificant annual air temperature dependency. We demonstrate that two widely-used surface snow density parameterizations dependent on temperature systematically overestimate surface snow density over the Greenland ice sheet by 17–19%, and that using a constant density of 315 kg m−3 may give superior results when applied in surface mass budget modeling.

Abstract:Surface mass balance (SMB) is an important factor in the estimation of sea level change, and data are collected to estimate models for prediction of SMB over the Antarctic ice sheets. Using a quality-controlled aggregate dataset of SMB field measurements with significantly more observations than previous analyses, a fully Bayesian nearest-neighbor Gaussian process model is posed to estimate Antarctic SMB and propose new field measurement locations. A corresponding Antarctic SMB map is rendered using this model and is compared with previous estimates. A prediction uncertainty map is created to identify regions of high SMB uncertainty. The model estimates net SMB to be 2345 Gton $\text{yr}^{-1}$, with 95% credible interval (2273,2413) Gton $\text{yr}^{-1}$. Overall, these results suggest lower Antarctic SMB than previously reported. Using the model's uncertainty quantification, we propose 25 new measurement sites for field study utilizing a design to minimize integrated mean squared error.

Albedo reduction caused by black carbon and dust accumulation: a quantitive model applied to the western margin of the Greenland ice sheet

Abstract:Abstract. Ice loss due to surface melt of the Greenland ice sheet has increased in recent years. Surface melt in the ablation zone is controlled by atmospheric temperature and surface albedo. Impurities such as mineral dust and black carbon darken the snow and ice surfaces and therefore reduce the surface albedo which leads to more absorbed solar energy and ultimately amplifying melt. These impurities accumulate on the ice surface both from atmospheric fallout and by melt-out of material which was enclosed in the snowpack or the ice compound. A general impurity accumulation model is developed and applied to calculate the surface albedo evolution at two locations in western Greenland. The model is forced either by regional climate model output or by a parameterisation for temperature and precipitation. Simulations identify mineral dust as the main contributor to impurity mass on ice where the dominating part originates from melt out of englacial dust. Daily reduction of impurities is in the range of one per-mille which leads to a residence time of decades on the ice surface. Therefore the impurities have a prolonged effect on surface melt once they are located on the ice surface. The currently englacially stored mineral dust and black carbon will effect future melt and sea level rise and can be studied with the presented model.

Abstract:We implement a data assimilation framework for integrating ice surface and terminus position observations into a numerical ice-flow model. The model uses the well-known shallow shelf approximation (SSA) coupled to a level set method to capture ice motion and changes in the glacier geometry. The level set method explicitly tracks the evolving ice–atmosphere and ice–ocean boundaries for a marine outlet glacier. We use an Ensemble Transform Kalman Filter to assimilate observations of ice surface elevation and lateral ice extent by updating the level set function that describes the ice interface. Numerical experiments on an idealized marine-terminating glacier demonstrate the effectiveness of our data assimilation approach for tracking seasonal and multi-year glacier advance and retreat cycles. The model is also applied to simulate Helheim Glacier, a major tidewater-terminating glacier of the Greenland Ice Sheet that has experienced a recent history of rapid retreat. By assimilating observations from remotely-sensed surface elevation profiles we are able to more accurately track the migrating glacier terminus and glacier surface changes. These results support the use of data assimilation methodologies for obtaining more accurate predictions of short-term ice sheet dynamics.

On the Simulation of Regional Scale Sublimation over Boreal and Agricultural Landscapes in a Climate Model

Abstract:In this study, a detailed evaluation of regional scale sublimation over two contrasting surface types is performed, based on observations and simulations from a regional climate model. New observed estimates of regional scale evaporative fractions (sublimation/precipitation) based on remotely sensed and gridded surface climate data suggest values of 0.16 and 0.09 respectively for boreal forest and agricultural regions during midwinter. While not dominating the water balance, this does indicate that sublimation is a significant component at the regional scale. On the other hand, simulated results were substantially less: 0.02 and -0.02 (i.e., net vapour deposition) respectively. Further analysis revealed that in both cases a net vapour deposition onto the ground snowpack was found, though in the forested case this was offset by a positive vapour flux off the canopy yielding a small net positive flux overall. Even over the agricultural region, sublimation was simulated during daytime in January, but this was overwhelmed by night-time frost, resulting in a net daily vapour deposition.The source of the surface vapour flux bias was further investigated. An attempt was made to enhance sublimation by increasing the sensible heat flux based on the "windless exchange" concept, which has been found helpful in studies of stand-alone snowpack models. However, in the coupled atmosphere-land surface model used here, increases in sensible heat flux into the snow were largely offset by increases in upward surface longwave flux: the net impact on sublimation and surface temperature bias was small. A proposed cold snow-vapour deposition feedback mechanism, under clear sky conditions, was determined to be unlikely for the simulation under consideration. The impact of cloud cover appears to be much more relevant to our simulation of the surface energy balance over snow. Satellite and limited surface radiation observations suggest that insufficient cloud radiative forcing simulated in the model was responsible for the excessive night-time frost.
On the importance of the humidity flux for the surface mass balance in the accumulation zone of the Greenland Ice Sheet

Abstract:It is highly uncertain how the humidity flux between the snow surface and the atmosphere contributes to the surface mass balance (SMB) of the interior Greenland Ice Sheet (GrIS). Due to sparse observations, evaluations of the simulated humidity flux are limited. Model-based estimates of the humidity flux contribution to the SMB are, therefore, unconstrained and even disagree in magnitude and sign. In this study, we evaluate the regional climate model MAR at the EGRIP (East Greenland Ice-Core Project) site in the accumulation zone of the GrIS. We use a combined dataset of continuous one-level bulk estimates of the humidity flux covering the period of May 2016–August 2019 and eddy-resolving eddy-covariance humidity flux measurements from all four summer seasons. In summer, we document a bias of too little sublimation ( − 1.3 W m −2 , − 1.65 mm w.e.) caused by a cold bias in both air and surface temperature, leading to a reduced humidity gradient. In winter, MAR overestimates vapor deposition by about 1 order of magnitude. This is a consequence of an overestimated temperature gradient in too stable atmospheric conditions compared to observations. Both systematic errors cause a large discrepancy in the annual net humidity flux between the model and observations of − 9 mm w.e. yr −1 . Remarkably, the simulated net annual humidity flux contributes positively to the SMB, contrary to observations documenting a net sublimation flux. We correct the systematic errors by applying a simple but effective correction function to the simulated latent heat flux. Using this correction, we find that 5.1 % of the annual mass gain at the EGRIP site sublimates again, and 4.3 % of the total mass gain is deposited vapor from the near-surface air. The estimated net humidity flux contribution to the annual SMB is about − 1 % (net sublimation) compared to + 5.6 % for the uncorrected simulation. In summer, the corrected MAR simulation shows that vapor deposition accounts for 9.6 % of the total mass gain and that 31 % of the total mass gain at the EGRIP site sublimates again. The net fluxes contribute to − 32 % of the summer SMB. These results demonstrate that the humidity flux is a major driver of the summer SMB in the accumulation zone of the GrIS and highlight that even small changes could increase its importance for the annual SMB in a warming climate.

Simulation-Based Inference of Surface Accumulation and Basal Melt Rates of an Antarctic Ice Shelf from Isochronal Layers

Abstract:The ice shelves buttressing the Antarctic ice sheet determine the rate of ice-discharge into the surrounding oceans. The geometry of ice shelves, and hence their buttressing strength, is determined by ice flow as well as by the local surface accumulation and basal melt rates, governed by atmospheric and oceanic conditions. Contemporary methods resolve one of these rates, but typically not both. Moreover, there is little information of how they changed in time. We present a new method to simultaneously infer the surface accumulation and basal melt rates averaged over decadal and centennial timescales. We infer the spatial dependence of these rates along flow line transects using internal stratigraphy observed by radars, using a kinematic forward model of internal stratigraphy. We solve the inverse problem using simulation-based inference (SBI). SBI performs Bayesian inference by training neural networks on simulations of the forward model to approximate the posterior distribution, allowing us to also quantify uncertainties over the inferred parameters. We demonstrate the validity of our method on a synthetic example, and apply it to Ekström Ice Shelf, Antarctica, for which newly acquired radar measurements are available. We obtain posterior distributions of surface accumulation and basal melt averaging over 42, 84, 146, and 188 years before 2022. Our results suggest stable atmospheric and oceanographic conditions over this period in this catchment of Antarctica. Use of observed internal stratigraphy can separate the effects of surface accumulation and basal melt, allowing them to be interpreted in a historical context of the last centuries and beyond.

Unsteady Circulation in a Glacial Fjord: A Multiyear Modeling Study of Milne Fiord

Abstract:The exchange of heat and freshwater between glaciers and the ocean is dictated by the circulation in glacial fjords and ice shelf cavities. Therefore, our ability to estimate and predict these fluxes depends on our understanding of the circulation mechanisms inside these polar estuaries. Here, we use an exceptionally long observational data set (8+ years) to develop and validate a high‐resolution realistic numerical model of Milne Fiord (Nunavut, Canada), a glacial fjord with an ice shelf at its mouth. Model results show the circulation inside Milne Fiord from 2011 to 2019 is highly three‐dimensional and unsteady. Three distinct circulation modes are identified (eddy, front, barotropic). The shifts between circulation modes are driven by density variations in the offshore coastal current, which restrict vertical stretching, allowing (or not) the coastal current to develop sufficient relative vorticity to enter the fjord. The unsteadiness of the system results in an overturning estuarine circulation with mean velocities ∼50 times smaller than the instantaneous field. Moreover, analysis of the model outputs suggest that at least 2 years of simulation are needed to yield reliable average heat flux estimates in this environment. This work highlights the value of combining long term (>1 year) observations with numerical modeling. This allowed us to uncover the spatial and temporal variability of the system, which impacts how heat and freshwater fluxes can be reliably estimated.

Abstract:The negative surface mass balance of glaciers and ice caps under a warming climate impacts local ecosystems, influencing the volume and timing of water flow in local catchments while also contributing to global sea level rise. Peripheral glaciers distinct to the Greenland ice sheet respond faster to climate change than the main ice sheet. Accurate assessment of surface mass balance depends on in situ observations of near-surface climate and ice ablation, but very few in situ observations of near-surface climate and ice ablation are freely available for Greenland's peripheral glaciers. The transect of three automated weather and ablation stations on the peripheral A. P. Olsen Ice Cap in northeast Greenland is an example of these much needed data. The transect has been monitored since 2008, and in 2022, the old weather and ablation stations were replaced by a new standardized setup. In order to ensure comparable data quality of the old and new monitoring station setups, it is necessary to re-evaluate the data collected between 2008 and 2022. This paper presents the fully reprocessed near-surface climate and ablation data from the A. P. Olsen Ice Cap transect from 2008 to 2022, with a focus on data quality and the usability in ice ablation process studies. The usability of the data is exemplified by the data in an energy balance melt model for two different years. We show that the inherent uncertainties in the data result in an accurate reproduction of ice ablation for just one of the two years. A transect of three automatic ablation and weather stations of this length is unique to Greenland's peripheral glaciers, and it has a broad scale of usage from input to climate reanalysis and detailed surface ablation studies. Abstract:A new continuum-mechanical formulation is proposed which encompasses all material processes within and surrounding an ice sheet. Using this formulation, the balance of mass and free-surface relations for ice sheets are derived and elaborated upon. The resulting three-dimensional mass-balance relation is then integrated vertically to produce an ice-sheet quasi-mass-balance relation in the horizontal plane, and is demonstrated to reduce velocity errors in regions with high magnitude surface gradients. An analytic velocity satisfying the corrected mass-balance relation is formulated as a means to verify future numerical ice-sheet models.

Abstract:Meltwater runoff from the Greenland ice sheet surface influences surface mass balance (SMB), ice dynamics, and global sea level rise, but is estimated with climate models and thus difficult to validate. We present a way to measure ice surface runoff directly, from hourly in situ supraglacial river discharge measurements and simultaneous high-resolution satellite/drone remote sensing of upstream fluvial catchment area. A first 72-h trial for a 63.1-km2 moulin-terminating internally drained catchment (IDC) on Greenland's midelevation (1,207-1,381 m above sea level) ablation zone is compared with melt and runoff simulations from HIRHAM5, MAR3.6, RACMO2.3, MERRA-2, and SEB climate/SMB models. Current models cannot reproduce peak discharges or timing of runoff entering moulins but are improved using synthetic unit hydrograph (SUH) theory. Retroactive SUH applications to two older field studies reproduce their findings, signifying that remotely sensed IDC area, shape, and supraglacial river length are useful for predicting delays in peak runoff delivery to moulins. Applying SUH to HIRHAM5, MAR3.6, and RACMO2.3 gridded melt products for 799 surrounding IDCs suggests their terminal moulins receive lower peak discharges, less diurnal variability, and asynchronous runoff timing relative to climate/SMB model output alone. Conversely, large IDCs produce high moulin discharges, even at high elevations where melt rates are low. During this particular field experiment, models overestimated runoff by +21 to +58%, linked to overestimated surface ablation and possible meltwater retention in bare, porous, low-density ice. Direct measurements of ice surface runoff will improve climate/SMB models, and incorporating remotely sensed IDCs will aid coupling of SMB with ice dynamics and subglacial systems.
Evaluating Greenland surface-mass-balance and firn-densification data using ICESat-2 altimetry

Abstract:Surface-mass-balance (SMB) and firn-densification (FD) models are widely used in altimetry studies as a tool to separate atmospheric-driven from ice-dynamics-driven ice-sheet mass changes and to partition observed volume changes into ice-mass changes and firn-air-content changes. Until now, SMB models have been principally validated based on comparison with ice core and weather station data or comparison with widely separated flight radar-survey flight lines. Firn-densification models have been primarily validated based on their ability to match net densification over decades, as recorded in firn cores, and the short-term time-dependent component of densification has rarely been evaluated at all. The advent of systematic ice-sheet-wide repeated ice-surface-height measurements from ICESat-2 (the Ice Cloud, and land Elevation Satellite, 2) allows us to measure the net surface-height change of the Greenland ice sheet at quarterly resolution and compare the measured surface-height differences directly with those predicted by three FD–SMB models: MARv3.5.11 (Modèle Atmosphérique Régional version 3.5.11) and GSFCv1.1 and GSFCv1.2 (the Goddard Space Flight Center FD–SMB models version 1.1 and 1.2). By segregating the data by season and elevation, and based on the timing and magnitude of modelled processes in areas where we expect minimal ice-dynamics-driven height changes, we investigate the models' accuracy in predicting atmospherically driven height changes. We find that while all three models do well in predicting the large seasonal changes in the low-elevation parts of the ice sheet where melt rates are highest, two of the models (MARv3.5.11 and GSFCv1.1) systematically overpredict, by around a factor of 2, the magnitude of height changes in the high-elevation parts of the ice sheet, particularly those associated with melt events. This overprediction seems to be associated with the melt sensitivity of the models in the high-elevation part of the ice sheet. The third model, GSFCv1.2, which has an updated high-elevation melt parameterization, avoids this overprediction.

Abstract:Meltwater runoff from the Greenland ice sheet surface influences surface mass balance (SMB), ice dynamics, and global sea level rise, but is estimated with climate models and thus difficult to validate. We present a way to measure ice surface runoff directly, from hourly in situ supraglacial river discharge measurements and simultaneous high-resolution satellite/drone remote sensing of upstream fluvial catchment area. A first 72-h trial for a 63.1-km2 moulin-terminating internally drained catchment (IDC) on Greenland's midelevation (1,207-1,381 m above sea level) ablation zone is compared with melt and runoff simulations from HIRHAM5, MAR3.6, RACMO2.3, MERRA-2, and SEB climate/SMB models. Current models cannot reproduce peak discharges or timing of runoff entering moulins but are improved using synthetic unit hydrograph (SUH) theory. Retroactive SUH applications to two older field studies reproduce their findings, signifying that remotely sensed IDC area, shape, and supraglacial river length are useful for predicting delays in peak runoff delivery to moulins. Applying SUH to HIRHAM5, MAR3.6, and RACMO2.3 gridded melt products for 799 surrounding IDCs suggests their terminal moulins receive lower peak discharges, less diurnal variability, and asynchronous runoff timing relative to climate/SMB model output alone. Conversely, large IDCs produce high moulin discharges, even at high elevations where melt rates are low. During this particular field experiment, models overestimated runoff by +21 to +58%, linked to overestimated surface ablation and possible meltwater retention in bare, porous, low-density ice. Direct measurements of ice surface runoff will improve climate/SMB models, and incorporating remotely sensed IDCs will aid coupling of SMB with ice dynamics and subglacial systems.
Modelling the evolution of an ice sheet's weathering crust

Abstract:The weathering crust is a layer of porous ice that can form at the surface of an ice sheet. It grows and decays in response changing weather and climate conditions, affecting the albedo, the melt rate, and the transport of meltwater across the surface. To understand this behaviour, we seek time-dependent solutions to a continuum, thermodynamic model for the porosity, temperature and thickness of the weathering crust, and the internal and surface melt rates. We find solutions using a numerical enthalpy method, presented in this study. We use idealised `switching' and sinusoidal forcings to explore the different dynamics exhibited during growth and decay, the timescales involved, and the impact of diurnal vs. annual variations. The results demonstrate qualitative agreement with observations, and provide insight into the relative importance of different surface heat fluxes during the growth and decay of the crust. The model therefore provides a useful tool for exploring the response of the weathering crust to climate change.
