Abstract:Models struggle to accurately simulate observed sea ice thickness changes, which could be partially due to inadequate representation of thermodynamic processes. We analyzed co‐located winter observations of the Arctic sea ice from the Multidisciplinary Drifting Observatory for the Study of the Arctic Climate for evaluating and improving thermodynamic processes in sea ice models, aiming to enable more accurate predictions of the warming climate system. We model the sea ice and snow heat conduction for observed transects forced by realistic boundary conditions to understand the impact of the non‐resolved meter‐scale snow and sea ice thickness heterogeneity on horizontal heat conduction. Neglecting horizontal processes causes underestimating the conductive heat flux of 10% or more. Furthermore, comparing model results to independent temperature observations reveals a ∼5 K surface temperature overestimation over ice thinner than 1 m, attributed to shortcomings in parameterizing surface turbulent and radiative fluxes rather than the conduction. Assessing the model deficiencies and parameterizing these unresolved processes is required for improved sea ice representation.

Abstract:We present a field investigation over a melting valley glacier on the Tibetan Plateau. In the ablation zone, aerodynamic roughness lengths ( z 0 M ) vary on the order of 10 −4 –10 −2 m, whose evolution corresponds to three melt phases with distinct surface cover and moisture exchange: snow (sublimation/evaporation), bare ice (deposition/condensation), and ice hummocks (sublimation/evaporation). Bowen-ratio similarity is validated in the stably stratified katabatic winds, which suggests a useful means for data quality check. A roughness sublayer is regarded as irrelevant to the present ablation season, because selected characteristics of scalar turbulence over smooth snow are quite similar to those over hummocky ice. We evaluate three parametrizations of the scalar roughness lengths ( z 0 T for temperature and z 0 q for humidity), viz. key factors for the accurate estimation of sensible heat and latent heat fluxes using the bulk aerodynamic method. The first approach is based on surface-renewal models and has been widely applied in glaciated areas; the second has never received application over an ice/snow surface, despite its validity in (semi-)arid regions; the third, a derivative of the first, is proposed for use specifically over rough ice defined as z 0 M > 10 −3 m or so. This empirical z 0 M threshold value is deemed of general relevance to glaciated areas (e.g. ice sheet/cap and valley/outlet glaciers), above which the first approach gives notably underestimated z 0 T , q . The first and the third approaches tend to underestimate and overestimate turbulent heat/moisture exchange, respectively, frequently leading to relative errors higher than 30%. Comparatively, the second approach produces fairly low errors in energy flux estimates both in individual melt phases and over the whole ablation season; it thus emerges as a practically useful choice to parametrize z 0 T , q in glaciated areas. Moreover, we find all three candidate parametrizations unable to predict diurnal variations in the excess resistances to humidity transfer, thus encouraging more efforts for improvement.

Abstract:We present direct eddy covariance measurements of the surface heat flux in sea ice over a wide range of conditions across the Arctic Ocean made during two research cruises. Photographic imagery of the surface around the ship provides a local, in situ estimate of the ice fraction. Aerodynamically rough conditions prevail for the majority of the time in the consolidated pack ice. The results are analyzed in the framework of a recently-developed parameterization scheme in which the exchange coefficients over ice are functions of a roughness Reynolds number, R * , hence account for aerodynamic roughness variability. This parameterization accurately represents the measured fluxes under all conditions, while under aerodynamically rough conditions the existing parameterizations from both the Met Office Unified Model, and ECMWF Integrated Forecast System overestimate the fluxes. The results corroborate those of a previous airborne study over the marginal ice zone, and encompass a wider range of atmospheric stability conditions.

Abstract:The energy budget of Arctic sea ice is strongly affected by the snow cover. Intensive sampling of snow properties was conducted near Qikiqtarjuaq in Baffin Bay on typical landfast sea ice during two melt seasons in 2015 and 2016. The sampling included stratigraphy, vertical profiles of snow specific surface area (SSA), density and irradiance, and spectral albedo (300–1100 nm). Both years featured four main phases: (I) dry snow cover, (II) surface melting, (III) ripe snowpack, and (IV) melt pond formation. Each phase was characterized by distinctive physical and optical properties. A high SSA value of 49.3 m 2 kg −1 was measured during phase I on surface wind slabs together with a corresponding broadband albedo (300–3000 nm) of 0.87. Phase II was marked by alternating episodes of surface melting, which dramatically decreased the SSA below 3 m 2 kg −1 , and episodes of snowfall re-establishing pre-melt conditions. Albedo was highly time-variable, with minimum broadband values around 0.70. In phase III, continued melting led to a fully ripe snowpack composed of clustered rounded grains. Albedo began to decrease in the visible as snow thickness decreased but remained steady at longer wavelengths. Moreover, significant spatial variability appeared for the first time following snow depth heterogeneity. Spectral albedo was simulated by radiative transfer using measured SSA and density vertical profiles and estimated impurity contents based on limited measurements. Simulations were most of the time within 1 % of measurements in the visible and within 2 % in the infrared. Simulations allowed the calculations of albedo and of the spectral flux at the snow–ice interface. These showed that photosynthetically active radiation fluxes at the bottom of the snowpack durably exceeded 5 W m −2 ( ∼9.2 μ mol m −2 s −1 ) only when the snowpack thickness started to decrease at the end of phase II.

Abstract:As an important exchange process of water and heat between the cryosphere and the atmosphere,snow and glacier sublimation is a principal pathway of moisture content loss of cryosphere.The observations and simulations of snow and glacier sublimation for the process and influencing factors were conducted earlier in the Antarctic and the Arctic Pole,North America and northern Europe,and had made great progress.Based on the analysis of the sublimation of ice and snow and the latent heat of sublimation in different regions and climatic conditions,the influencing factors to sublimation of ice and snow were analyzed.Although sublimation of ice and snow is an important part of regional hydrological process and energy budget balance,under humid climate conditions,sublimation of ice and snow is inhibited.it is greatly affected by local topography(elevation,slope and aspect),vegetation and meteorological elements,resulting in large differences in reported sublimation of ice and snow.However,there are many factors that affect the sublimation,resulting in the obvious spatial and temporal differences of research results.The researches lack of long-term,systematic observation and research,and which has contributed to the lack of understanding in the water-heat process of snow and glacier.There are still great uncertainties and difficulties in this study that need to be overcome.
The effects of surface roughness on the calculated, spectral, conical–conical reflectance factor as an alternative to the bidirectional reflectance distribution function of bare sea ice

Abstract:The conical–conical reflectance factor (CCRF) has been calculated as an alternative to the bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) for three types of bare sea ice with varying surface roughness ( σ = 0.1–10) and ice thicknesses (50–2000 cm) over an incident solar irradiance wavelength range of 300–1400 nm. The comprehensive study of the CCRF of sea ice presented here is paramount for interpreting sea ice measurements from satellite imagery and inter-calibrating space-borne sensors that derive albedo from multiple multi-angular measurements. The calculations performed by a radiative-transfer code (PlanarRad) show that the CCRF of sea ice is sensitive to realistic values of surface roughness. The results presented here show that surface roughness cannot be considered independently of sea ice thickness, solar zenith angle and wavelength. A typical CCRF of sea ice has a quasi-isotropic reflectance over the hemisphere, associated with a strong forward-scattering peak of photons. Surface roughness is crucial for the location, size and intensity of the forward-scattering peak. As the surface roughness increases, a spreading of the CCRF peak is observed. The hemisphere was split in to 216 quadrangular regions or quads. The peak remains specular for the smaller surface roughnesses ( σ =0.001 to σ =0.01 ), whereas for larger surface roughness features (above σ =0.05 ), the peak spreads out over multiple quads with a lower intensity than for smaller roughness features, and the highest value is displaced further out on the solar principal plane. Different types of sea ice have a similar pattern with wavelength: the CCRF increases by 30 % from first-year sea ice to multi-year sea ice at 400 nm and up to 631 % at 1100 nm, 32 % from melting sea ice to multi-year sea ice at 400 nm and a maximum of 98 % at 900 nm, and 11 % from melting sea ice to first-year sea ice at 400 nm and up to 86 % at 800 nm. The CCRF calculations presented in this study form the first set of complete CCRF values as an approximation of the BRDF for bare sea ice with a wide range of configurations.
A Variational Method for Computation of Sensible Heat Flux over the Arctic Sea Ice

Abstract:In this study, a variational approach was employed to compute surface sensible heat flux over the Arctic sea ice. Because the variational approach is able to take into account information from the Monin-Obukhov similarity theory ( MOST) as well as the observed meteorological information, it is expected to improve the pure MOST-based approach in computation of sensible heat flux. Verifications using the direct eddy-correlation measurements over the Arctic sea ice during the Surface Heat Budget of the Arctic Ocean (SHEBA) experiment period of 1997/98 show that the variational method yields good agreement between the computed and the measured sensible heat fluxes. The variational method is also shown to be more accurate than the traditional MOST method in the computation of sensible heat flux over the Arctic sea ice.

Abstract:Abstract. The roughness of glacier surfaces is an important factor governing surface albedo and turbulent heat transfer. Previous studies have not directly observed spatial and temporal variation in surface roughness (z0) over a whole glacier and whole melting season. Such observations can do much to help us understand variation in z0 and thus variations in albedo and turbulent heat transfer. This study, at the August-one ice cap in the Qilian mountains, collected three-dimensional ice surface data at plot-scale, using both automatic and manual close-range digital photogrammetry. Data was collected from sampling sites spanning the whole glacier for the whole of the melting season. The automatic site collected daily photogrammetric measurements from July to September of 2018 for a plot near the center of the ice cap; during this time, snow cover gave place to ice and then returned to snow. Z0 was calculated from this data. Manual measurements were taken at sites dotted from terminal to top; they showed that z0 was larger at the snow and ice transition zone than in areas fully snow or ice covered. This zone moved up the ice cap during the melting season. It is clear that persistent snowfall and rainfall both reduce z0. Using data from a meteorological station near the automatic photogrammetry site, we were able to calculate surface energy balances over the course of the melting season. We found that high or rising turbulent heat as a component of surface energy balance tended to produce a smooth ice surface; low or decreasing turbulent heat tended to produce a rougher surface.

Abstract:In absence of the high-frequency measurements of wind components, sonic temperature and water vapour required by the eddy covariance (EC) method, Monin–Obukhov similarity theory (MOST) is often used to calculate heat fluxes. However, MOST requires assumptions of stability corrections and roughness lengths. In most environments and weather situations, roughness length and stability corrections have high uncertainty. Here, we revisit the modified Bowen-ratio method, which we call C-method, to calculate the latent heat flux over snow. In the absence of high-frequency water vapour measurements, we use sonic anemometer data, which have become much more standard. This method uses the exchange coefficient for sensible heat flux to estimate latent-heat flux. Theory predicts the two exchange coefficients to be equal and the method avoids assuming roughness lengths and stability corrections. We apply this method to two datasets from high mountain (Alps) and polar (Antarctica) environments and compare it with MOST and the three-layer model (3LM). We show that roughness length has a great impact on heat fluxes calculated using MOST and that different calculation methods over snow lead to very different results. Instead, the 3LM leads to good results, in part due to the fact that it avoids roughness length assumptions to calculate heat fluxes. The C-method presented performs overall better or comparable to established MOST with different stability corrections and provides results comparable to the direct EC method. An application of this method is provided for a new station installed in the Pamir mountains.

Subglacial roughness of the Greenland Ice Sheet: relationship with contemporary ice velocity and geology

Abstract:Abstract. The subglacial environment of the Greenland Ice Sheet (GrIS) is poorly constrained both in its bulk properties, for example geology, the presence of sediment, and the presence of water, and interfacial conditions, such as roughness and bed rheology. There is, therefore, limited understanding of how spatially heterogeneous subglacial properties relate to ice-sheet motion. Here, via analysis of 2 decades of radio-echo sounding data, we present a new systematic analysis of subglacial roughness beneath the GrIS. We use two independent methods to quantify subglacial roughness: first, the variability in along-track topography – enabling an assessment of roughness anisotropy from pairs of orthogonal transects aligned perpendicular and parallel to ice flow and, second, from bed-echo scattering – enabling assessment of fine-scale bed characteristics. We establish the spatial distribution of subglacial roughness and quantify its relationship with ice flow speed and direction. Overall, the beds of fast-flowing regions are observed to be rougher than the slow-flowing interior. Topographic roughness exhibits an exponential scaling relationship with ice surface velocity parallel, but not perpendicular, to flow direction in fast-flowing regions, and the degree of anisotropy is correlated with ice surface speed. In many slow-flowing regions both roughness methods indicate spatially coherent regions of smooth beds, which, through combination with analyses of underlying geology, we conclude is likely due to the presence of a hard flat bed. Consequently, the study provides scope for a spatially variable hard- or soft-bed boundary constraint for ice-sheet models.
Numerical Simulation of the Effects of Surface Roughness on Light Scattering by Hexagonal Ice Plates

Abstract:Cirrus clouds have an extensive global coverage and their high altitude means they play a critical role in the atmospheric radiation balance. Hexagonal ice plates and columns are two of the most abundant species present in cirrus and yet there remains a poor understanding of how surface roughness affects the scattering of light from these particles. To advance current understanding, the scattering properties of hexagonal ice plates with varying surface roughness properties are simulated using the discrete dipole approximation and the parent beam tracer physical–optics method. The ice plates are chosen to have a volume-equivalent size parameter of 2πr/λ=60, where r is the radius of the volume-equivalent sphere, and a refractive index n=1.31+0i at a wavelength λ=0.532 μm. The surface roughness is varied in terms of a characteristic length scale and an amplitude. The particles are rotated into 96 orientations to obtain the quasi-orientation averaged scattering Mueller matrix and integrated single-scattering parameters. The study finds that the scattering is largely invariant with respect to the roughness length scale, meaning it can be characterised solely by the roughness amplitude. Increasing the amplitude is found to lead to a decrease in the asymmetry parameter. It is also shown that roughness with an amplitude much smaller than the wavelength has almost no effect on the scattering when compared with a pristine smooth plate. The parent beam tracer method shows good agreement with the discrete dipole approximation when the characteristic length scale of the roughness is several times larger than the wavelength, with a computation time reduced by a factor of approximately 500.

On sea ice emission modeling for MOSAiC's L-band radiometric measurements

Abstract:The retrieval of sea ice thickness using L-band passive remote sensing requires robust models for emission from sea ice. In this work, measurements obtained from surface-based radiometers during the MOSAiC expedition are assessed with the Burke, Wilheit and SMRT radiative transfer models. These models encompass distinct methodologies: radiative transfer with/without wave coherence effects, and with/without scattering. Before running these emission models, the sea ice growth is simulated using the Cumulative Freezing Degree Days (CFDD) model to further compute the evolution of the ice structure during each period. Ice coring profiles done near the instruments are used to obtain the initial state of the computation, along with Digital Thermistor Chain (DTC) data to derive the sea ice temperature during the analyzed periods. The results suggest that the coherent approach used in the Wilheit model results in a better agreement with the horizontal polarization of the in situ measured brightness temperature. The Burke and SMRT incoherent models offer a more robust fit for the vertical component. These models are almost equivalent since the scattering considered in SMRT can be safely neglected at this low frequency, but the Burke model misses an important contribution from the snow layer above sea ice. The results also suggest that a more realistic permittivity falls between the spheres and random needles formulations, with potential for refinement, particularly for L-band applications, through future field measurements.

Abstract:A partially coherent low frequency microwave emission model for polar ice sheet is developed to operate from 0.5GHz to 2.0GHz predicting brightness temperatures. The emission from polar ice sheet over the wide frequency band is shown to be correlated with its temperature profile and affected by its density fluctuations. The density fluctuations creating weakly reflective internal interfaces cause the decay of wave coherence so that the ice sheet can be divided into blocks. The coherent wave interaction are accounted for within the block by full wave simulations while inter-block wave interaction are taken incoherently by cascading boundary conditions in radiative transfer. The layer thickness / correlation length of the density fluctuation cause distinct frequency spectrum of the brightness temperature. The air/ snow interface and intermediate snow layer interfaces are rough causing angular coupling and polarization coupling in microwave emissions, and affect the angular patterns of the brightness temperature.. We apply the small perturbation method to study the roughness effects of multiple interfaces. Results of vertical and horizontal emissivities are illustrated as a function of observation angles.

Abstract:Ice friction plays a vital role in different fields, including glaciology, polar runways, and winter sports, the mechanisms of which are complex and affected by many parameters, such as temperature, velocity, and load. It is commonly accepted that the frictional characteristics of ice can be attributed to a lubricating layer. Sphere-on-ice friction experiments were conducted to study the influence of temperature, pressure, and velocity on ice friction. The lubrication state of ice friction under different conditions was analyzed, and it was found that the contact angle and roughness were crucial factors. Characterizations of the worn surfaces done using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS) and three-dimensional white-light interference indicated that abrasive and oxidation wear were the main wear mechanisms arising from ice friction. The underlying mechanism was explored using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The results suggested that the effects of velocity, temperature, and load on the presence of hydrogen bonding alter the fluidity of the lubricating layer existing between the ice and sphere, which in turn affects the ice friction characteristics. In the lubricating layer, the concentrations of water molecules near the sliders and ice were higher than those in the inner water. Moreover, the adsorption energy verified that water molecules tended to be adsorbed on the ice and sliders. In addition, the calculation results indicated that some water molecules were re-oriented in the ice friction because spikes were observed in the radial distribution function (RDF) graphs.
Snow topography on undeformed Arctic sea ice captured by an idealized "snow dune" model

Abstract:Our ability to predict the future of Arctic sea ice is limited by ice's sensitivity to detailed surface conditions such as the distribution of snow and melt ponds. Snow on top of the ice decreases ice's thermal conductivity, increases its reflectivity (albedo), and provides a source of meltwater for melt ponds during summer that decrease the ice's albedo. In this paper, we develop a simple model of pre-melt snow topography that accurately describes snow cover of flat, undeformed Arctic sea ice on several study sites for which data was available. The model considers a surface that is a sum of randomly sized and placed "snow dunes" represented as Gaussian mounds. This model generalizes the "void model" of Popović et al. (2018) and, as such, accurately describes the statistics of melt pond geometry. We test this model against detailed LiDAR measurements of the pre-melt snow topography. We show that the model snow-depth distribution is statistically indistinguishable from the measurements on flat ice, while small disagreement exists if the ice is deformed. We then use this model to determine analytic expressions for the conductive heat flux through the ice and for melt pond coverage evolution during an early stage of pond formation. We also formulate a criterion for ice to remain pond-free throughout the summer. Results from our model could be directly included in large-scale models, thereby improving our understanding of energy balance on sea ice and allowing for more reliable predictions of Arctic sea ice in a future climate.

Abstract:Natural particles such as ice crystals in cirrus clouds generally are not pristine but have additional microroughness on their surfaces. A two-dimensional finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) program with a perfectly matched layer absorbing boundary condition is developed to calculate the effect of surface roughness on light scattering by long ice columns. When we use a spatial cell size of 1/120 incident wavelength for ice circular cylinders with size parameters of 6 and 24 at wavelengths of 0.55 and 10.8 microm, respectively, the errors in the FDTD results in the extinction, scattering, and absorption efficiencies are smaller than approximately 0.5%. The errors in the FDTD results in the asymmetry factor are smaller than approximately 0.05%. The errors in the FDTD results in the phase-matrix elements are smaller than approximately 5%. By adding a pseudorandom change as great as 10% of the radius of a cylinder, we calculate the scattering properties of randomly oriented rough-surfaced ice columns. We conclude that, although the effect of small surface roughness on light scattering is negligible, the scattering phase-matrix elements change significantly for particles with large surface roughness. The roughness on the particle surface can make the conventional phase function smooth. The most significant effect of the surface roughness is the decay of polarization of the scattered light.

Abstract:The application of diffusion theory and Monte Carlo lidar radiative transfer simulations presented in Part I of this series of study suggests that snow depth can be derived from the first-, second- and third-order moments of the lidar backscattering pathlength distribution. These methods are now applied to the satellite ICESat-2 lidar measurements over the Arctic sea ice and land surfaces of Northern Hemisphere. Over the Arctic sea ice, the ICESat-2 retrieved snow depths agree well with co-located IceBridge snow radar measured values with a root-mean-square (RMS) difference of 7.8 cm or 29.2% of the mean snow depth. The terrestrial snow depths derived from ICESat-2 show drastic spatial variation of the snowpack along ICESat-2 ground tracks over the Northern Hemisphere, which are consistent with the University of Arizona (UA) and Canadian Meteorological Centre (CMC) gridded daily snow products. The RMS difference in snow depths between ICESat-2 and UA gridded daily snow products is 14 cm, or 28% of the mean UA snow depth. To better understand these results, we also discuss the possible sources of errors in ICESat-2 derived snow depths, including surface roughness within the laser footprint, atmospheric forward scattering, solar background noise, and detector dark current. Simulation results indicate that the snow depth errors would be less than 5 cm if the standard deviation of pulse spreading due to surface roughness is within 50 cm. Our results demonstrate that the ICESat-2 lidar measurements can be used to reliably derive snow depth, which is a critical geophysical parameter for cryosphere studies including sea ice thickness estimation and also provides important constraints in the modeling of terrestrial hydrological processes.

Abstract:Sea ice regulates heat exchange between the ocean and atmosphere in Earth’s polar regions. The thermal conductivity of sea ice governs this exchange, and is a key parameter in climate modelling. However, it is challenging to measure and predict due to its sensitive dependence on temperature, salinity and brine microstructure. Moreover, as temperature increases, sea ice becomes permeable, and fluid can flow through the porous microstructure. While models for thermal diffusion through sea ice have been obtained, advective contributions to transport have not been considered theoretically. Here, we homogenize a multiscale advection–diffusion equation that models thermal transport through porous sea ice when fluid flow is present. We consider two-dimensional models of convective flow and use an integral representation to derive bounds on the thermal conductivity as a function of the Péclet number. These bounds guarantee enhancement in the thermal conductivity due to the added flow. Further, we relate the Péclet number to temperature, making these bounds useful for global climate models. Our analytic approach offers a mathematical theory which can not only improve predictions of atmosphere–ice–ocean heat exchanges in climate models, but can provide a theoretical framework for a range of problems involving advection–diffusion processes in various fields of application.

Abstract:From April through June in 2019 and 2022, we monitored snow melt at three sites near UtqiaÄ¡vik, Alaska. Along 200â€�m lines we measured snow depth, density, stratigraphy, snowâ€�covered area, and spectral albedo. Site 1 (ARM) was sloped tundra drained by water tracks. Site 2 (BEO) was flat polygonal tundra. Site 3 (ICE) was on undeformed landfast sea ice. All three sites were within a 6Â km radius. Despite similar preâ€�melt snow distributions and weather, the melt progression differed markedly between sites. In 2019, by midâ€�melt, there was 40% less snowâ€�covered area at ARM versus ICE, and 34% less snowâ€�covered area at ARM versus BEO. The 2022 melt started 2Â weeks later than in 2019 and was rapid, so smaller differences in snowâ€�covered areas developed. In both years meltout dates varied by up to 25Â days between sites, and more than 20Â days within sites, with melt rates at locations only meters apart differing by up to a factor of seven. This melt diachroneity led to highly heterogeneous meltout patterns at all three sites. Our measurements and observations indicate that, in addition to reductions in snow reflective properties and windâ€�driven heat advection, the fate of meltwater plays a key role in producing melt diachroneity. We identify seven snowâ€�water mechanisms that can enhance or inhibit melt rates, all largely controlled by the local topography and the nature of the substrate. These mechanisms are important because the most rapid changes in albedo coincide with the peak of waterâ€�snow melt interactions.
