Abstract:This paper describes the development of a constitutive model for predicting dynamic anisotropic damage and fragmentation of rock materials under blast loading. In order to take account of the anisotropy of damage, a second rank symmetric damage tensor is introduced in the present model. Based on the mechanics of microcrack nucleation, growth and coalescence, the evolution of damage is formulated. The model provides a quantitative method to estimate the fragment distribution and fragment size generated by crack coalescence in the dynamic fragmentation process. It takes account of the experimental facts that a brittle rock material does not fail if the applied stress is lower than its static strength and certain time duration is needed for fracture to take place when it is subjected to a stress higher than its static strength. Numerical results are compared with those from independent field tests.

Abstract:Avalanche control by explosion is a widely applied method to minimize the avalanche risk to infrastructure in snow-covered mountain areas. However, the mechanisms involved leading from an explosion to the release of an avalanche are not well understood. Here we test the hypothesis that weak layers fail due to the stress caused by propagating acoustic waves. The underlying mechanism is that the stress induced by the acoustic waves exceeds the strength of the snow layers. We compare field measurements to a numerical simulation of acoustic wave propagation in a porous material. The simulation consists of an acoustic domain for the air above the snowpack and a poroelastic domain for the dry snowpack. The two domains are connected by a wave field decomposition and open pore boundary conditions. Empirical relations are used to derive a porous model of the snowpack from density profiles of the field experiment. Biot's equations are solved in the poroelastic domain to obtain simulated accelerations in the snowpack and a time dependent stress field. Locations of snow failure were identified by comparing the principal normal and shear stress fields to snow strength which is assumed to be a function of snow porosity. One air pressure measurement above the snowpack was used to calibrate the pressure amplitude of the source in the simulation. Additional field measurements of air pressure and acceleration measurements inside the snowpack were compared to individual field variables of the simulation. The acceleration of the air flowing inside the pore space of the snowpack was identified to have the highest correlation to the acceleration measurements in the snowpack.

Abstract:For a building structure subjected to impulsive loading, particularly shock and impact loading , the response of the critical columns is crucial to the behaviour of the entire system during and after the blast loading phase. Therefore, an appropriate evaluation of the column response and damage under short-duration impulsive loading is important in a comprehensive assessment of the performance of a building system. This paper reports a dynamic analysis approach for the response of RC columns subjected to impulsive loading. Considering that the dynamic response of a column in a frame structure can also be affected by the floor movement which relates to the global vibration of the frame system, a generic column-mass model is used, in which a concentrated mass is attached to the column top to simulate the effect of a global vibration. To take into account the high shear effect under impulsive load, the model is formulated using Timoshenko beam theory, and three main nonlinear mechanisms are considered. Two typical scenarios, one under a direct air blast loading, and another under a blast-induced ground excitation, are analyzed and the primary response features are highlighted.
3D elastoplastic simulation of ski-triggered snow slab avalanches

Abstract:The stability of dry-snow avalanches is strongly dependent on the interaction between the snow slab above a weak-layer and, as presented in this work, the skier induced load. This induced load causes an additional stress field on the slab which eventually triggers an avalanche. I present the results of 3D finite element simulations in an elastoplastic domain. The plastic deformation of the weak-layer follows the Mohr-Coulomb-Cap model which provides a more realistic model as a pure elastic approach. I investigate how the stress field on top of the weak-layer changes if one is skiing down-slope or parallel to the slope. A layered snow slab changes the stress on top of the weak-layer and to investigate these changes I simulated two different representative layered slabs. One containing only soft layers to investigate how the weak layer is affected by the ski induced stress and the other hard-soft-hard layer to examine bridge effects caused by the hard layers. A hard layer in the snow slab forms a sort of bridge which spreads the induced stress over a larger lateral distance, at the same time decreasing the stress to the layers below the bridge. Furthermore, I show a possible connection between the plastic deformation and the critical crack length.

Abstract:International Journal of Modeling, Simulation, and Scientific Computing, Ahead of Print. Realistic simulation of dynamic interaction between plants and different natural environmental factors is a key topic in the field of natural landscape simulation. At present, few researches focus on the accumulation of snow on plants and the simulation of the dynamic deformation of a branch under the influence of the accumulation of snow. Therefore, we propose a simulation method for the dynamic interaction between snowfall and plants based on physical models. We first analyze the structure of the target plant and establish its physical structure model. Then we use the particle system and the plant branch collision detection method to calculate the amount of snow accumulation on the branches and generate the fluctuating snow grid surface based on the Berlin noise function. Finally, the cantilever beam model is used to calculate the deformation of branches under snow pressure. This modeling method proposed in this paper can provide a new research idea and technical reference for simulating the dynamic interaction between plants and environmental factors represented by snow.

Abstract:Avalanche is a natural disaster in the snow-covered mountainous area in winter, which may cause great disasters to human life and property. It is also a danger for skiers and climbers. This paper presents a new physically based algorithm to simulate the dynamic avalanches under position-based dynamics framework. To realistically simulate avalanches’ dynamic characteristics, we introduce the Bingham plastic model from geodynamics to model snow flow motion in avalanches. The interaction between snow flow in the avalanche and the surrounding objects is simulated by a level set-based two-way fluid–solid coupling model. We also propose static and kinetic friction mixed model to determine the accumulated transition of the avalanche. To create an avalanche scene with more realistic details, we employ an aerodynamics-based snow drag force model to generate snow fog effect. Finally, by choosing different criterion shear rate and friction parameters, different kinds of wet and dry avalanche scenes are realistically rendered. Compared with the real photographs of avalanches, our simulated results are quite satisfactory.

Abstract:In engineering applications snow often undergoes large and fast deformations. During these deformations the snow transforms from a sintered porous material into a granular material. In order to capture the fundamental mechanical behavior of this process a discrete element (DE) model is the physically most appropriate. It explicitly includes all the relevant components: the snow microstructure, consisting of bonded grains, the breaking of the bonds and the following rearrangement and interaction of the loose grains. We developed and calibrated a DE snow model based on the open source DE code liggghts. In the model snow grains are represented by randomly distributed elastic spheres connected by elastic-brittle bonds. This bonded structure corresponds to sintered snow. After applying external forces, the stresses in the bonds might exceed their strength, the bonds break, and we obtain loose particles, corresponding to granular snow. Model parameters can be divided into temperature dependent material parameters and snow type dependent microstructure parameters. The model was calibrated by angle of repose experiments and several high strain rate mechanical tests, performed in a cold laboratory. We demonstrate the performance of the DE snow model by the simulation of a combined compression and shear deformation of different snow types with large strains. The model successfully reproduces the experiments. Most characteristics of the mechanical snow behavior are captured by the model, like the fracture behavior, the differences between low and high density snow, the granular shear flow or the densification of low density snow. The model is promising to simulate arbitrary high strain rate processes for a wide range of snow types, and thus seems useful to be applied to different snow engineering problems.

Abstract:Snow, characterized as a unique granular and low‐density material, exhibits intricate behavior influenced by the proximity to its melting point and its three‐phase composition. This composition entails a structured ice skeleton surrounded by voids filled with air and spread with liquid water. Mechanically, snow experiences dynamic transformations, including bonding/degradation between its grains, significant inelastic deformations, and a distinct rate sensitivity. Given snow's varied structures and mechanical strengths in natural settings, a comprehensive constitutive model is necessary. Our study introduces a pioneering formulation grounded on the modified Cam‐Clay model, extended to finite strains. This formulation is further enriched by an implicit gradient damage modeling, creating a synergistic blend that offers a detailed representation of snow behavior. The versatility of the framework is emphasized through the careful calibration of damage parameters. Such calibration allows the model to adeptly capture the effects of diverse strain rates, particularly at high magnitudes, highlighting its adaptability in replicating snow's unique mechanical responses across various conditions. Upon calibration against established experimental benchmarks, the model demonstrates a suitable alignment with observed behavior, underscoring its potential as a comprehensive tool for understanding and modeling snow behavior with precision and depth.

Abstract:To explore the dynamic mechanical properties and damage evolution law of the more common layered rock masses in geotechnical engineering, this paper determined the Holmquist–Johnson–Cook (HJC) constitutive model parameters of dolomite, gray sandstone, and limestone according to the static mechanical parameters of the rock mass. We used Hypermesh/ANSYS software to establish the numerical analysis model, carried out the dynamic impact numerical simulation of the layered rock mass, and analyzed the stress wave propagation characteristics, dynamic stress–strain relationship, energy dissipation, and damage evolution laws of layered rock masses under different combinations. At the same time, this paper analyzed the stress characteristics of the layered rock mass and studied its failure characteristics. The research results show that the wave impedance matching relationship alters the dynamic characteristics of the layered rock mass; however, with the increase in impact velocity, the difference gradually weakens. The difference in elastic modulus leads to different initial failure modes of layered rock masses, and the quality of the wave impedance matching relationship leads to differences in the law of damage evolution of layered rock masses. Under different combination forms, the failure degree and failure modes of the two parts of the layered rock mass are different.

Abstract:A snow slab avalanche releases after failure initiation and crack propagation in a highly porous weak snow layer buried below a cohesive slab. While our knowledge of crack propagation during avalanche formation has greatly improved over the last decades, it still remains unclear how snow mechanical properties affect the dynamics of crack propagation. This is partly due to a lack of non-invasive measurement methods to investigate the micro-mechanical aspects of the process. Using a DEM model, we therefore analyzed the influence of snow cover properties on the dynamics of crack propagation in weak snowpack layers. By focusing on the steady-state crack speed, our results showed two distinct fracture process regimes that depend on slope angle, leading to very different crack propagation speeds. For long experiments on level terrain, weak layer fracture is mainly driven by compressive stresses. Steady-state crack speed mainly depends on slab and weak layer elastic moduli as well as weak layer strength. We suggest a semi-empirical model to predict crack speed, which can be up to 0.6 times the slab shear wave speed. For long experiments on steep slopes, a supershear regime appeared, where the crack propagation speed reached approximately 1.6 times the slab shear wave speed. A detailed micro-mechanical analysis of stresses revealed a fracture principally driven by shear. Overall, our findings provide new insight into the micro-mechanics of dynamic crack propagation in snow, and how these are linked to snow cover properties.

A New Erosion Model for Wind-Induced Structural Vibrations

Abstract:In recent years, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method has been widely utilized in simulating wind-induced snow drifting. In the simulating process, the erosion flux is the main controlling factor which can be calculated by the product of erosion coefficient and the differences between the flow stress and threshold stress. The erosion coefficient is often adopted as an empirical constant which is believed not to change with time and space. However, in reality, we do need to consider the influences of snow diameter, density, and wind speed on the erosion coefficient. In this technical note, a function of air density, sow particle density, snow particle radius, and snow particle strength bond is proposed for the erosion coefficient. Based on an experiment study, the effects of these parameters in erosion coefficient is analyzed and discussed. The probability distribution and value range of erosion coefficient are also presented in this technical note. The applicability of this approach is also demonstrated in a numerical study for predicting the snow distributions around a cube structure. The randomness of the structural vibrations is studied with details.

Abstract:We show that the plastic deformation of snow under uniaxial compression is characterized by complex spatio-temporal strain localization phenomena. Deformation is characterized by repeated nucleation and propagation of compaction bands. Compaction bands are also observed during the very first stage of compression of solid foams where a single band moves across the sample at approximately constant stress. However, snow differs from these materials as repeated nucleation and propagation of bands occurs throughout the subsequent hardening stage until the end of the deformation experiment. Band nucleation and/or reflection of bands at the sample boundaries are accompanied by stress drops which punctuate the stress strain curve. A constitutive model is proposed which quantitatively reproduces all features of this oscillatory deformation mode. To this end, a well-established compressive plasticity framework for solid foams is generalized to account for shear softening behavior, time dependence of microstructure (`rapid sintering') and non-locality of damage processes in snow.
Seismic stress path induced by obliquely incident waves and its simulation

Abstract:Considering the fact that seismic waves do not vertically propagate near the surface especially under near field earthquakes, a simplified model is deduced to analyze the seismic response under obliquely incident waves based on the propagation theory in elastic half-space. It is considered the incident waves are harmonic, reflected at the free surface. The seismic stresses at arbitrary depth and the corresponding dynamic stress paths are estimated to investigate the effect of the incident angle of input waves. Under the single incidence of P-waves or SV-waves, it is shown that in the coordinate plane (σy-σx)/2, τxy), the stress path will be a fluctuating ellipse, the angular between X axis and the long axis of the ellipse, and the ratio of long axis to short axis of the ellipse are related to the incident angle, frequency, wave velocity, etc. Moreover, preliminary discussion is also made on the way to simulate such a dynamic stress path in laboratory tests.

Abstract:The porous structure of snow becomes denser with time under gravity, primarily due to the creep of its ice matrix with viscoplasticity. Despite investigation of this behavior at the macroscopic scale, the driving microscopic mechanisms are still not well understood. Thanks to high‐performance computing and dedicated solvers, we modeled snow elasto‐viscoplasticity with 3D images of its microstructure and different mechanical models of ice. The comparison of our numerical experiments to oedometric compression tests measured by tomography showed that ice in snow rather behaves as a heterogeneous set of ice crystals than as homogeneous polycrystalline ice. Similarly to dense ice, the basal slip system contributed at most, in the simulations, to the total snow deformation. However, in the model, the deformation accommodation between crystals was permitted by the pore space and did not require any prismatic and pyramidal slips, whereas the latter are pre‐requisite for the simulation of dense ice.

Abstract:In deep rock engineering, dynamic hazards such as blasting and earthquakes pose serious threats to the safety of underground rock structures, including mining and construction activities. To explore the dynamic mechanical properties and damage mechanisms of rocks under realistic ground stress conditions, this study utilized dynamic triaxial compression tests under hydrostatic pressure. These tests employed a modified split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) technique at various strain rates. Wave velocities of the specimens were measured before and after the tests to calculate the damage factor based on the P-wave velocity. Additionally, dynamic uniaxial compression tests on the damaged sandstone specimens indicated a significant reduction in dynamic strength as the damage impact air pressure increased. There was also a notable correlation between the dissipated energy ratio and the level of rock damage, with more severe damage resulting in a smaller dissipated energy ratio. Macroscopic examination through sieve grain size results confirmed the formation of more cracks under high impact air pressure, while microscopic analysis using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images uncovered the damage mechanisms within the rock post-impact. Ultimately, this study developed an improved ZWT model to effectively verify the dynamic response of the damaged sandstone.

Abstract:The prediction of wind driven snowdrift development around complex surface obstacles and elevated structures presently relies heavily on experience and experimental and numerical flow field analyses using, for example, boundary layer wind tunnels, cryospheric wind tunnels, water flumes and computational fluid dynamics (CFD). In this paper, a snowdrift modeling method is presented that compliments these techniques by using CFD coupled with a domain adaptation strategy to facilitate the transient changes in snow surface topography. The numerical technique is applied here to simulate the snowdrift development around two adjacent cubical buildings, around a complex of surface mounted buildings and around an elevated structure. The analysis technique presented allows the evaluation and three-dimensional visualization of snowdrift development, which assists the conceptual building design process to manage potential snowdrifts on and around these structures.

Abstract:Based on the damage mechanics of soil and using ABAQUS software,considering the failure mechanism of soil under dynamic compaction,the geometric nonlinear and material nonlinear axisymmetric finite element method with large deformation for simulating the formation course of stone column under consecutive impact loading is established.From comparison and analysis for the results of model test and numerical simulation,the formation course of stone column and soil deformation course are obtained.The effect of area of failure to next dynamic compaction on stone column for every compacting is taken into account when simulates the formation progress.The depth development of stone column with compaction numbers is analyzed under different conditions such as compaction energy,cushion thickness and hammer diameter.The shape of stone column is described in every compaction loading,and its spatial distribution could be predicted successfully.The achievement of this paper will be helpful to similar engineering practices.

Abstract:Abstract A new constitutive model for frozen soils under high strain rate is developed. By taking the frozen soil as a composite material and considering the adiabatic temperature rise and interfacial debonding damage, the nonlinear dynamic response (NDR) of the frozen soil is predicted. At the same time, the relationship between instantaneous temperature and unfrozen water content is given, and an evolution rule of the volume fraction of ice particles is obtained. This relationship shows good agreement with experimental data. Using this new constitutive model, the stress–strain relationship of frozen soil under impact loading at temperatures of − 3 °C, − 8 °C, − 18 °C, and − 28 °C is calculated. There is good agreements between the results based on this new constitutive model and the data of dynamic impact.

Abstract:Ice and snow have sometime been classified as a viscoelastic or viscoplastic mate- rial according to temperature, strain rate, pressure and time scale. Throughout experimental studies presented in the literature, it has been observed that at very low temperatures or high strain rate, porous ice and snow exhibit brittle behavior, but experience high viscous and plastic flow at temperatures closed to the melting point and low rates. At the macroscopic level nonlinearity is not necessarily attributed to material level permanent changes or yielding but mainly to micro cracks, porosity collapse and crack propagation. This paper attempts to address this complex behavior with a full microstructure based model.
