Abstract:Formaldehyde (HCHO) is known as one of the important indoor organic pollutants. How to remove and decompose the low concentration of formaldehyde at room temperature is important for indoor environments. Catalytic ozonation is an efficient method to thoroughly remove HCHO at room temperature, with high efficiency and few byproducts. A series of MnOx/γ-Al2O3 catalysts were prepared in this work via the impregnation method and treated with different reagents (acid, alkali, and H2O2) to evaluate their catalytic activity for HCHO removal. The results showed that MnAl-II (acid treatment) performed well in activity tests, reaching a nearly 100% HCHO conversion at an O3/HCHO of 2.0 and attaining a CO2 selectivity of above 95% at an O3/HCHO of 3.0 at 30 °C, with almost no ozone residual existing. The larger specific surface area, abundant oxygen vacancies, and higher number of acid sites contributed to the excellent performance of MnAl-II. Stability and H2O resistance tests of MnAl-II were also conducted. To reveal the intermediate product formation and further investigate the reaction mechanism of HCHO ozonation, in-situ DRIFTS measurement was carried out combined with DFT calculations.

Abstract:Gold catalysts supported on high surface area CeO2 were synthesized and tested for low temperature formaldehyde oxidation. It was found that the reactivity was greatly enhanced by increasing surface area of the support. Complete conversion of formaldehyde was obtained on a 3.0Au/CeO2-270 catalyst with a surface area of 270m2g−1 at 50°C, and a conversion of 92.3% was obtained at 37°C over the same catalyst, which made it promising for indoor formaldehyde removal. Detailed characterizations of the catalyst showed that the enhancement could be attributed to two factors. One was that Au species mainly in high oxidation states formed on the high surface area CeO2 resulted in a high degree of HCHO adsorption, as revealed by in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy. The other was the high surface area CeO2 provided more oxygen vacancies by the nano effect and the formation of AuxCe1−xO2−δ solid solution as revealed by Raman spectroscopy, on which oxygen molecules could be transformed to active species for the reaction.
Highly dispersed Fe-Ce mixed oxide catalysts confined in mesochannels toward low-temperature oxidation of formaldehyde

Abstract:Catalytic oxidation of formaldehyde (HCHO) is regarded as a promising strategy to eliminate this indoor air pollutant. The design of a highly active and cost-effective catalyst is still pivotal to improve the performance for HCHO oxidation. Herein, we report an Fe-Ce-O solid solution catalyst supported on ordered mesoporous silica (SBA-15) prepared by simple two-step impregnation-calcination, achieving highly efficient HCHO elimination at a low temperature. This strategy brings about the formation of small solid solution nanoparticles (7-12.9 nm) with good dispersion in confined spaces. Meanwhile, the catalysts possess large surface areas (similar to 500 m(2)g(-1)) and pore volumes (0.5 cm(3)g(-1)) with a pore size of similar to 7.5 nm. The results show that Fe content and calcination temperature have great effects on the generation of oxygen vacancies in the catalyst, and further on the catalytic performance. The 20% FeOx-CeOx/SBA-15-350 catalyst displays superior catalytic activity with 65% and 94.9% conversion at 30 degrees C and 60 degrees C with a low concentration of HCHO (9.8 mu g L-1), respectively, comparable to that for many reported precious metal catalysts. The high ratio of Ce(3+)due to the formation of an Fe-Ce-O solid solution and highly dispersed active sites by the spatial confinement is favorable for more oxygen vacancy generation, which mainly contributes to the excellent performance. This work opens up an avenue to design highly efficient non-noble metal nanocatalysts for volatile organic compound (VOC) elimination.

Abstract:O 2 activation is vital for catalyzing the oxidation of formaldehyde (HCHO). Despite the high O 2 activation capabilities demonstrated by noble metal catalysts, their practical application is impeded by their exorbitant cost. Herein, Co single atoms were successfully incorporated into titanium dioxide nanowires (TiO 2 -NWs). Furthermore, the key step in the HCHO catalytic oxidation process was elucidated through in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (in situ DRIFTS) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Finally, the intricate O 2 activation mechanism was explored, revealing the catalyst's exceptional performance in ambient HCHO oxidation. Notably, it outperformed commercial TiO 2 (TiO 2 -P25) by 13.3 times and Co-supported TiO 2 -P25 by 1.9 times. Co single atoms facilitated the conversion of O 2 into superoxide (O 2 - ), significantly reducing the reaction barrier of dioxymethylene to formate. This superior O 2 activation was attributed to the active nature and unsaturated electronic configuration of Co single atoms. This study provides a novel, cost-effective strategy for creating HCHO elimination catalysts with accessible nonnoble transition metals.

Abstract:In this paper, a highly active silver-based catalyst, K-Ag/La-CeO2/Al2O3, was developed for low temperature formaldehyde oxidative removal based on oxygen vacancy theory, as an endeavor to bridge one of the gaps between the laboratory research and practical applications. Oxygen vacancies were generated by doping La2O3 into the CeO2 surface modification layer on an alumina support. They raised the fraction of Ag2O on CeO2 surface, reduced the activation energy from 109 to 74 kJ/mol, enabled the low temperature activity, and increased active sites for fast reaction. The catalyst demonstrated a decent adsorption capacity of 0.39 mmol HCHO/g_cat. in the presence of air at 25 degrees C. It completely converted formaldehyde into CO2 and H2O at a temperature higher than 85 degrees C and a residence time less than 0.1 s and achieved 4-10 % formaldehyde conversion at 25 degrees C. In situ DRIFTS suggested that formaldehyde combusted in the presence of the catalyst through a pathway with formic acid and CO as intermediate species. Besides formaldehyde oxidation, this catalyst design approach can also be applied to low temperature combustion of other volatile organic compounds.
Insights into High-Performance Monolith Catalysts of Co3O4 Nanowires Grown on Nickel Foam with Abundant Oxygen Vacancies for Formaldehyde Oxidation

Abstract:Monolith catalysts of cobalt oxides grown on metal substrates exhibited good catalytic performance in the oxidation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and oxygen vacancies play a key role in activating. However, there is rarely a report about the increase in oxygen vacancies using a facile method in monolith catalysts. Besides, the corresponding mechanism of the promotional effects of oxygen vacancies over the monolith catalysts still remains elusive. In this work, Co3O4 nanowires with abundant oxygen vacancies in situ grown on the Ni foam (r-Co3O4 NW@Ni foam) were synthesized and used as high-performance monolith catalysts for catalytic oxidation of formaldehyde. The r-Co3O4 NW@Ni foam catalysts showed outstanding catalytic activity and stability. The T10 (temperature when HCHO conversion achieved 10%) of r-Co3O4 NW@Ni foam catalysts (75 degrees C) was lower than that of Co3O4 NW@Ni foam catalysts (100 degrees C) and Co3O4 NP catalysts (132 degrees C). More importantly, the r-Co3O4 NW@Ni foam catalysts have more active oxygen species because of the promotional effects of surface oxygen vacancies. In situ diffuse reflectance infrared transform spectroscopy (in situ DRIFTs) results revealed that the formate species were reaction intermediates of HCHO catalytic oxidation reactions. However, the formate species on the surface of r-Co3O4 NW@Ni foam catalysts were more active thus could easily take part in catalytic reactions. Furthermore, combined with the calculation results, the abundant surface oxygen vacancies could weaken O-2 adsorption energy and make r-Co3O4 NW@Ni foam catalysts adsorb and store more active oxygen species, thus promoting more reaction intermediates to generate with a higher rate in redox cycles. The present investigations in this work may lead to an alternative development of high-performance monolith catalysts for VOC catalytic oxidation.

Abstract:As a main pollutant in indoor environments, formaldehyde has high toxicity and a long release period. The use of catalytic-oxidation technique to remove formaldehyde can effectively improve indoor air quality. Spinel Co3O4 is an inexpensive catalyst with good low-temperature catalytic activity for formaldehyde oxidation. This paper systematically reviews the progress of research on Co3O4-based catalysts for formaldehyde oxidation in recent years. First, the limited performance of pristine Co3O4 and influencing factors (e.g., morphology, crystal face exposure, surface oxygen vacancy, surface reactive species, and environmental factors) is described. Subsequently, we introduce current modification methods to improve catalytic activity, including Co3O4/transition metal oxide composites, Co3O4-supported noble metals, and alkali-metal-ion doping. The reaction mechanism of catalytic oxidation for formaldehyde on Co3O4-based catalysts is also discussed. Finally, perspectives on challenges related to Co3O4 catalysts for formaldehyde oxidation are proposed.

Abstract:Co3O4 catalysts prepared with different precipitants (NH3·H2O, KOH, NH4HCO3, K2CO3 and KHCO3) were investigated for the oxidation of formaldehyde (HCHO). Among these, KHCO3-precipitated Co3O4 (KHCO3-Co) was the most active low-temperature catalyst, and was able to completely oxidize HCHO at the 100-ppm level to CO2 at 90 °C. In situ diffuse reflectance infrared spectroscopy demonstrated that hydroxyl groups on the catalyst surface were regenerated by K+ and CO32–, thus promoting the oxidation of HCHO. Moreover, H2-temperature programmed reduction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy showed that employing KHCO3 as the precipitant increased the Co3+/Co2+ molar ratio on the surface of the Co3O4 catalyst, thus further promoting oxidation. Structural characterization revealed that catalysts precipitated with carbonate or bicarbonate reagents exhibited greater specific surface areas and pore volumes. Overall, these data suggest that the high activity observed during the Co3O4 catalyzed oxidation of HCHO can be primarily attributed to the presence of K+ and CO32– on the Co3O4 surface and the favorable Co3+/Co2+ ratio.
Complete oxidation of formaldehyde over a Pd/CeO2 catalyst at room temperature: tunable active oxygen species content by non-thermal plasma activation

Abstract:Formaldehyde is a main indoor pollutant and its removal is essential to protect human health and meet strict environmental regulations. It is highly desirable to develop efficient catalysts to achieve complete oxidation of formaldehyde at room temperature. However the preparation of catalysts generally requires harsh conditions and long times. In this work, a quick, mild and efficient alternative method was employed to prepare a Pd/CeO2 catalyst and adjust its characteristics via non-thermal plasma activation. The plasma activation could obtain tunable active oxygen species content since it can change the metallic Pd percentage, oxygen vacancy concentration and Pd particle size simultaneously. A close relationship between the active oxygen species content and HCHO catalytic oxidation activity was established. The Pd/CeO2 catalyst activated by plasma for only 2 minutes showed the best conversion of over 76% due to its highest active oxygen species amount. The results of in situ DRIFTS of HCHO oxidation over the Pd/CeO2 catalyst suggested that the intermediates mainly included formate, dioxymethylene and polyoxymethylene species. The high content of active oxygen species could promote the rate determining step of formate species oxidation. This study provides a quick and efficient catalyst activation method for HCHO catalytic oxidation at room temperature.

Abstract:Room-temperature catalytic oxidation is a highly promising method for controlling formaldehyde (HCHO) concentrations indoors because it does not require any additional energy input, while completely converting HCHO into harmless H 2 O and CO 2 . This study focuses on the synthesis of Co 3 O 4 porous nanofiber monolithic catalysts through electrospinning and investigates the mechanism behind the formation of its porous structure by analyzing the morphological changes that occur during the calcination of its fibers. In this research, we utilized heat-resistant polyacrylonitrile (PAN) as template to synthesize Co 3 O 4 porous nanofiber monolithic catalysts. The synthesis process involved the utilization of the oxidation characteristics of PAN in the presence of cobalt acetate tetrahydrate (CH 3 COO) 2 Co·4H 2 O at 270–330 °C. Co 3 O 4 porous nanofiber monolithic catalyst demonstrated exceptional performance, exhibiting over 99% catalytic activity toward HCHO at room-temperature in indoors (10–12 ppm, 25 °C) at a gas hourly space velocity of 60,000 mL·g −1 h −1 . This catalyst demonstrates its suitability for practical applications and its potential for energy savings. These results highlight the superiority of Co 3 O 4 porous nanofiber monolithic catalyst over catalysts produced via the direct calcination method. The outstanding activity and stability of Co 3 O 4 porous nanofiber monolithic catalyst make it a promising candidate for applications requiring efficient formaldehyde removal, particularly in indoors.

Abstract:Engineering functional defects in support materials has gained ever-increasing attention as a novel approach to boosting the catalytic performance of oxide-supported catalysts. Herein, we demonstrate the feasibility of engineering oxygen vacancy in iron oxide through amorphization in conjunction with foreign cation doping and elucidate the important role of support functionality in the catalytic oxidation of formaldehyde (HCHO). A supported Pt catalyst on Fe-W-O amorphous nanosheets (denoted as Pt/a-Fe-W-O) was synthesized using a one-step solvothermal method. This simple method allowed us to simultaneously create abundant oxygen vacancies in the substrate and to ensure uniform dispersion of tiny Pt nanoparticles with an average diameter of 1.4 nm on the high-surface-area substrate. This renders an increased possibility of Pt/O-vacancy coexistence in close proximity, which synergistically boosts the formation of active oxygen and surface hydroxyl species. Consequently, the Pt/a-Fe-W-O catalyst with an optimal W/Fe molar ratio of 0.08:1 and a 1.51 wt% Pt loading exhibited a high specific reaction rate of 68.3 μmol gPt-1 s-1 and excellent stability during 24 h continuous test, outperforming most existing HCHO oxidation catalysts. Our study highlights the importance of functional oxygen defects in construction of synergistic active sites for promoting the reactions requiring multiple active species.

Abstract:Synthesis of catalysts with high catalytic degradation activity for formaldehyde (HCHO) at room temperature is highly desirable for indoor air quality control. Herein, a novel K-Mn3O4@CeO2 catalyst with excellent catalytic oxidation activity toward HCHO at near room temperature was reported. In particular, the K addition in K-Mn3O4@CeO2 considerably enhanced the oxidation activity, and importantly, 99.3 % conversion of 10 mL of a 40 mg/L HCHO solution at 30 °C for 14 h was achieved, with simultaneous strong cycling stability. Moreover, the addition of K species considerably influenced the chemical valence state of Mn from +4 (ε-MnO2) to +8/3 (Mn3O4) on the surface of CeO2, which obviously changed the tunnel structure and the number of oxygen vacancies. One part of K species is uniformly dispersed on K-Mn3O4@CeO2, and the other part exists in the tunnel structure of Mn3O4@CeO2, which is mainly used to balance the negative charge of the tunnel and prevent collapse of the structure, providing enough active sites for the catalytic oxidation of HCHO. We observed a phase transition from tunneled KMnO2 to Mn3O4 to tunneled MnO2 with the decreasing K+ content, in which K-Mn3O4@CeO2 exhibited higher HCHO oxidation activity. In addition, K-Mn3O4@CeO2 exhibited lower oxygen vacancy formation and HCHO adsorption energies in aqueous solution based on density functional theory calculations. This is because the K species provide more active oxygen species and richer oxygen vacancies on the surface of K-Mn3O4@CeO2, promote the mobility of lattice oxygen and the room-temperature reduction properties of oxygen species, and enhance the ability of the catalyst to replenish the consumed oxygen species. Finally, a possible HCHO catalytic oxidation pathway on the surface of K-Mn3O4@CeO2 catalyst is proposed.
Influence of Environmental Humidity on Au/Co3O4 Catalytic property for Formaldehyde Oxidation at Room Temperature

Abstract:Au/Co3O4 catalyst was prepared by co-precipitation method and applied in the catalytic oxidation of formaldehyde.Au-loading significantly reduced the temperature of formaldehyde oxidation,and 60％ of formaldehyde were removed at room temperature (25 ℃,RH 0％,GHSV 80 000 h-1) with 100％ CO2 selectivity.When moisture was introduced,over 95％ of formaldehyde were oxidized with 100％ CO2 selectivity (25 ℃,RH 50％,GHSV 80 000 h-1),and no activity decrease was observed for more than 20 h.XPS results revealed that Au loaded on Co3O4 was mainly metallic,and its introduction increased surface Oads/Olatt ratio.In sjtu DRIFTS results indicated that formate and dioxymethylene (DOM) were the main intermediates,and the presence of moisture accelerated the formation of the formate species.The results obtained by regulating the reaction conditions revealed that moisture facilitated formaldehyde oxidation and products dissociation.
Catalytic oxidation of formaldehyde on nano-Co 3 O 4 , 2 DCo 3 O 4 , and 3 DCo 3 O 4 catalysts

Abstract:Introduction Formaldehyde (HCHO) emitted from the widely used building and decorative materials is becoming a major indoor pollutant in airtight buildings, and it could cause serious and hazardous effects on human health. Thus it is essential for human health to remove indoor formaldehyde [1]. Currently, the catalytic materials used in HCHO catalytic oxidation are mainly oxide-supported precious metals [2]. Noble metal catalysts are superior, but the high cost is prohibitive. Metal oxide catalysts are cheap, exhibit sufficient activity and are more practical. Co3O4 is widely used in catalytic field [3], however, the Co3O4 with the different structures and the same components for HCHO oxidation is seldom reported. In this work, nano-Co3O4, 2D-Co3O4, and 3D-Co3O4 are prepared, and their HCHO catalytic activities are evaluated. Materials and Methods SBA-15 (p6mm) and KIT-6 (ia3d) mesoporous silica were synthesized under acidic conditions using tetraethoxysilane as the silica source and Pluronic P123 as the structuredirecting agent [4]. Nano-Co3O4 was prepared by the precipitation method [5]. In a typical synthesis of 2D-Co3O4 or 3D-Co3O4, 3.0 g of SBA-15 or KIT-6 molecular sieve was added to a Co(NO3)2·6H2O ethanol solution (0.84 mol/L, 30 ml). The samples were evaporated to dryness at 80 °C. The products were calcined at 200 °C for 6 h. The above steps about casting and evaporating were repeated. Finally, the materials were calcined at 450 °C for 6 h. The SBA-15 and KIT-6 hard templates were removed using a 2 mol/L NaOH solution. Centrifugal separation was used to eliminate sodium silicate, and the samples were dried at 100 °C. The obtained powder was 2D-Co3O4 or 3D-Co3O4. Results and Discussion
Evaluation of an ε-manganese (IV) oxide/manganese vanadium oxide composite catalyst enriched with oxygen vacancies for enhanced formaldehyde removal

Abstract:Formaldehyde removal is vital to health, but the construction of high-performance non-precious metal catalysts still faces great challenges, in which increasing oxygen vacancies by dopant modification is an advanced strategy to enhance catalytic activity. In this work, a novel ε-MnO2/Mn2V2O7 composite catalyst with a synergistic effect was synthesized on the basis of a thermal decomposition strategy. Meanwhile, the precursor for the catalyst was synthesized from the reaction among CO2-storage material, Mn2+, and vanadate without additional template agents and surfactants. Aided by the catalyst, the degradation rate of a 20 mg/L 10 mL formaldehyde (HCHO) solution can reach 72.0% and maintain above 67% after 5 cycles at 30 °C for 1 h. Subsequently, the as-obtained synergistic catalytic mechanism showed that the high-valent V5+ may partially replace Mn4+ in the MnO2 framework, promoting the formation of enriched oxygen vacancies (V4+-□-Mn3+) on the surface of the composite catalyst via the redox coupling of Mn4+/Mn3+ and V5+/V4+. This leads to an increase in adsorbed oxygen, significantly improving the degradation performance of HCHO. This work provides a novel and advanced strategy for dopant modification to develop superior non-precious metal catalysts.

Abstract:Although oxygen vacancies (OVs) commonly act as adsorption/active sites in catalytic oxidation of formaldehyde (HCHO), thereby strongly influencing catalyst activity, their control and translation into scale-up products for practical application remain challenging. Herein, δ-MnOx/activated carbon was synthesized via in situ reduction coupled with ammonia modification, and the developed method was found to allow easy OV control for large-scale production. OV concentration was effectively regulated through adjustment of Mn3+ content, and OV roles in the catalytic reaction were probed by several techniques. The optimized catalyst featured superior HCHO removal efficiency and CO2 selectivity at room temperature, mainly due to oxygen activation by abundant OVs to form reactive oxygen species. The intermediates and pathways of HCHO removal were investigated. Thus, this work provides insights into the enhancement of active site exposure through OV control for a single bulk catalyst and demonstrates its applicability for efficient and commercially viable room-temperature oxidation of HCHO.

Abstract:Formaldehyde (HCHO) is a common indoor organic pollutant, which causes serious damage to people's health. The removal of formaldehyde is a difficult problem that human beings have to face in healthy life. MOF derivatives are a research hotspot in the field of catalysis in recent years. In this paper, a UiO-66 derived ZrO2 was selected for the study of formaldehyde degradation. Combining ZrO2 and g-C3N4 through multiple calcinations, a heterostructure was successfully constructed, which enabled the catalyst to absorb visible light. Then supported Ag by photoreduction can further improve the dispersibility and visible light absorption ability of the catalyst. When the addition amount of ZrO2 is 300 mg, Ag@g-C3N4/ZrO2-300 degrades 81.3 % of formaldehyde after 3 h of illumination and exhibits excellent stability. This work provides a certain reference value for the application of MOF and its derivatives in the field of formaldehyde degradation.

Abstract:Catalytic oxidation of gaseous formaldehyde at room temperature over non-noble metal catalysts has wide application prospect. Regulation of catalyst surface active species such as surface hydroxyls, valence state of active metal, oxygen vacancies, etc., is effective in promoting catalytic performance. Herein, we prepared a series of Mn/HZSM-5 catalysts with a facile ball mill strategy. The optimal catalyst 0.4%Mn/HZSM-5 exhibited superior activity of nearly 100% HCHO conversion at 30 °C under 100 ppm gaseous HCHO condition. The characterization results revealed that the catalyst with high specific surface area has a large number of Mn 4+ ions and hydroxyls on surface, which facilitates providing more active sites for formaldehyde oxidation. Combining XPS and chemisorption experiments, it was clear that the interaction between Mn 4+ and the carriers provided more surface reactive oxygen species. In addition, in situ DRIFTS results revealed that Mn 4+ and hydroxyls could jointly activate formaldehyde, and Mn 4+ could further activate oxygen to oxidize the reaction intermediate to CO 2 and H 2 O.
