Abstract:We provide a sufficient condition for the sum of a finite number of complemented subspaces of a Banach space to be complemented. Under this condition a formula for a projection onto the sum is given. We also show that the condition is sharp (in a certain sense). As applications, we get (1) sufficient conditions for the complementability of sums of marginal subspaces in $L^p$ and sums of tensor powers of subspaces in a tensor power of a Banach space and (2) quantitative results on stability of the complementability property of the sum of linearly independent subspaces.

Abstract:We prove that, for every compact spaces $K_1,K_2$ and compact group $G$, if both $K_1$ and $K_2$ map continuously onto $G$, then the Banach space $C(K_1 \times K_2)$ contains a complemented subspace isometric to the Banach space $C(G)$. Consequently, $C(K_1\times K_2)$ contains a complemented copy of $C([0,1])$ for every non-scattered $K_1,K_2$. Also, answering a question of Alspach and Galego, we get that $C(\beta\omega\times\beta\omega)$ contains a complemented copy of $C([0,1]^\kappa)$ for every cardinal number $1\le\kappa\le{\mathfrak c}$ and hence a complemented copy of $C(K)$ for every metric compact space $K$. On the other hand, for the pointwise topology, we show that $C_p(\beta\omega\times\beta\omega)$ contains no complemented copy of $C_p(2^\omega)$.

Abstract:We study the complemented subspaces of the $J$-sums of Banach spaces $J(\Phi)$ and $\hat J(\Phi)$ introduced by Bellenot. As an application, we show that, under some conditions, $J(\Phi)$ and $\hat J(\Phi)$ are subprojective, i.e., every closed infinite-dimensional subspace of either of them contains a complemented infinite-dimensional subspace.

Abstract:Building on a recent construction of G. Plebanek and the third named author, it is shown that a complemented subspace of a Banach lattice need not be linearly isomorphic to a Banach lattice. This solves a long-standing open question in Banach lattice theory.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a Banach space and $(\Omega,\Sigma)$ be a measure space. We provide a characterization of sequences in the space of $X$-valued countably additive measures on $\Omega,\Sigma)$ of bounded variation that generate complemented copies of $\ell_1$. As application, we prove that if a dual Banach space $E^*$ has Pe\l czy\'nski's property (V*) then so does the space of $E^*$-valued countably additive measures with bounded variation. Another application, we show that for a Banach space $X$, the space $\ell_\infty(X)$ contains a complemented copy of $\ell_1$ if and only if $X$ contains all $\ell_1^n$ uniformly complemented.
Complements of unions: insights on spaceability and applications

Abstract:This paper presents two general criteria to determine spaceability results in the complements of unions of subspaces. The first criterion applies to countable unions of subspaces under specific conditions and is closely related to the results of Kitson and Timoney in [J. Math. Anal. Appl. \textbf{378} (2011), 680-686]. This criterion extends and recovers some classical results in this theory. The second criterion establishes sufficient conditions for the complement of a union of Lebesgue spaces to be $\left(\alpha,\beta\right)$-spaceable, or not, even when they are not locally convex. We use this result to characterize the measurable subsets having positive measure. Armed with these results, we have improved existing results in environments such as: Lebesgue measurable function sets, spaces of continuous functions, sequence spaces, nowhere Hölder function sets, Sobolev spaces, non-absolutely summing operator spaces, and even sets of functions of bounded variation.

Abstract:In this article, we introduce the concept of weakly uniquely stationary representations. This framework enables us to investigate the complementability of closed subspaces within the context of continuous cohomology with coeffcients in Banach modules. As an application, we extend and refine several cohomological results from the literature, particularly in the settings of nilpotent groups, products of groups, and lattices.

Abstract:We prove that Schlumprecht space $S$ is isomorphic to $(\sum_{k=1}^\infty \oplus \ell_infty ^{n_k})_S $ for any sequence of integers $(n_k)$. We also show that every complemented subspace of $S$ which has some subsymmetric basis, is isomorphic to $S$.

Abstract:We study the question for which Tychonoff spaces $X$ and locally convex spaces $E$ the space $C_p(X,E)$ of continuous $E$-valued functions on $X$ contains a complemented copy of the space $(c_0)_p=\{x\in\mathbb{R}^\omega\colon x(n)\to0\}$, both endowed with the pointwise topology. We provide a positive answer for a vast class of spaces, extending classical theorems of Cembranos, Freniche, and Domański and Drewnowski, proved for the case of Banach and Fréchet spaces $C_k(X,E)$. Also, for given infinite Tychonoff spaces $X$ and $Y$, we show that $C_p(X,C_p(Y))$ contains a complemented copy of $(c_0)_p$ if and only if any of the spaces $C_p(X)$ and $C_p(Y)$ contains such a subspace.

Abstract:A topological space $X$ is called almost discrete, if it has precisely one nonisolated point. In this paper, we get that for a countable product $X=\prod X_i$ of almost discrete spaces $X_i$ the space $C_p(X)$ of continuous real-valued functions with the topology of pointwise convergence is a $\mu$-space if, and only if, $X$ is a weak $q$-space if, and only if, $t(X)=\omega$ if, and only if, $X$ is functionally generated by the family of all its countable subspaces. This result makes it possible to solve Archangel'skii's problem on the product of Grothendieck spaces. It is proved that in the model of $ZFC$, obtained by adding one Cohen real, there are Grothendieck spaces $X$ and $Y$ such that $X\times Y$ is not weakly Grothendieck space. In $(PFA)$: the product of any countable family almost discrete Grothendieck spaces is a Grothendieck space.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce the notions of $\alpha$-quasicomplemented and totally $\alpha$-quasicomplemented subspaces and we established some results under these contexts. We show, for example, that if $X$ is a separable or reflexive Banach space and $Y$ is a closed infinite codimensional subspace of $X$, then $Y$ is totally$\mathit{\ }\alpha$-quasicomplemented if, and only if, $\alpha<\aleph_{0}$ $\left( \text{this is an analogue of the theorem of Murray-Mackey and Lindenstrauss}\right) $. We also show that if $H$ is a Hilbert space and $Y,W\subset H$ are closed subspaces of $H$ such that $W$ is orthogonal to $Y$ and $\operatorname{codim}\left( Y+W\right) =\infty$, then $Y$ has a quasicomplement $Z$ containing $W$ with $\dim Z/W=\infty$. Other results in the different contexts are also included. Such results establish a connection between the theory of quasicomplemented subspaces and $\left( \alpha,\beta\right) $-spaceability.

Abstract:In this paper, we characterize complementable operators and provide more precise expressions for the Schur complement of these operators using a single Douglas solution. We demonstrate the existence of subspaces where the given operator is invariably complementable. Additionally, we investigate the range-Hermitian property of these operators.

Abstract:Let $\Gamma$ be a discrete group acting on a compact Hausdorff space $X$. Given $x\in X$, and $\mu\in\text{Prob}(X)$, we introduce the notion of contraction of $\mu$ towards $x$ with respect to unitary elements of a group von Neumann algebra not necessarily coming from group elements. Using this notion, we study relative commutants of subalgebras in tracial crossed product von Neumann algebras. The results are applied to negatively curved groups and $\text{SL}(d,\mathbb{Z})$, $d \geq 2$.

Abstract:We give a new proof of a characterization of the closeness of the range of a continuous linear operator and of the closeness of the sum of two closed vector subspaces of a Banach space. Then we state sufficient conditions for the closeness of the sum of two closed subspaces of the Banach space of bounded functions and apply this result on various pseudo almost periodic spaces and pseudo almost automorphic spaces.

Abstract:In combinatorial problems it is sometimes possible to define a $G$-equivariant mapping from a space $X$ of configurations of a system to a Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^m$ for which a coincidence of the image of this mapping with an arrangement $\mathcal{A}$ of linear subspaces insures a desired set of linear conditions on a configuration. Borsuk-Ulam type theorems give conditions under which no $G$-equivariant mapping of $X$ to the complement of the arrangement exist. In this paper, precise conditions are presented which lead to such theorems through a spectral sequence argument. We introduce a blow up of an arrangement whose complement has particularly nice cohomology making such arguments possible. Examples are presented that show that these conditions are best possible.

Complementation of Subquandles

Abstract:Saki and Kiani proved that the subrack lattice of a rack $R$ is necessarily complemented if $R$ is finite but not necessarily complemented if $R$ is infinite. In this paper, we investigate further avenues related to the complementation of subquandles. Saki and Kiani's example of an infinite rack without complements is a quandle, which is neither ind-finite nor profinite. We provide an example of an ind-finite quandle whose subobject lattice is not complemented, and conjecture that profinite quandles have complemented subobject lattices. Additionally, we provide a complete classification of subquandles whose set-theoretic complement is also a subquandle, which we call \textit{strongly complemented}, and provide a partial transitivity criterion for the complementation in chains of strongly complemented subquandles. One technical lemma used in establishing this is of independent interest: the inner automorphism group of a subquandle is always a subquotient of the inner automorphism group of the ambient quandle.
