Abstract:Let A and B be countable discrete groups and let Γ=A∗B be their free product. We show that if both A and B are uniformly embeddable in a Hilbert space then so is Γ. We give two different proofs: the first directly constructs a uniform embedding of Γ from uniform embeddings of A and B; the second works without change to show that if both A and B are exact then so is Γ.

Singular value gap estimates for free products of semigroups

Abstract:We establish lower estimates for singular value gaps of free products of $1$-divergent semigroups $\Gamma_1,\Gamma_2\subset \mathsf{GL}_d(\mathbb{K})$ which are in ping-pong position. As an application, we prove that if $\Gamma_1$ and $\Gamma_2$ are quasi-isometrically embedded subgroups in ping pong position, then the group they generate $\langle \Gamma_1,\Gamma_2\rangle$ is also quasi-isometrically embedded. In addition, we establish that the class of linear finitely generated groups, admitting a faithful linear representation over $\mathbb{R}$ which is a quasi-isometric embedding, is closed under free products.

Abstract:This paper studies the locally uniform exponential growth and product set growth for a finitely generated group $G$ acting properly on a finite product of hyperbolic spaces. Under the assumption of coarsely dense orbits or shadowing property on factors, we prove that any finitely generated non-virtually abelian subgroup has uniform exponential growth. These assumptions are fulfilled in many hierarchically hyperbolic groups, including mapping class groups, specially cubulated groups and BMW groups. Moreover, if $G$ acts weakly acylindrically on each factor, we show that, with two exceptional classes of subgroups, $G$ has uniform product set growth. As corollaries, this gives a complete classification of subgroups with product set growth for any group acting discretely on a simply connected manifold with pinched negative curvature, for groups acting acylindrically on trees, and for 3-manifold groups.

Abstract:Let X be a real strictly convex and Kadec Banach space and G a nonempty closed relatively boundedly weakly compact subset of X. Let B(X) (resp. K(X)) be the family of nonempty bounded closed (resp. compact) subsets of X endowed with the Hausdorff distance and let BG(X) denote the closure of the set {A∈B(X):A∩G=∅} and KG(X)=BG(X)∩K(X). We introduce the admissible family A of B(X) and prove that EAo(G) (resp. EoA(G)), the set of all subsets F∈A⊆BG(X) (resp. F∈A⊆B(X)) such that the minimization problem min(F,G) (resp. the maximization problem max(F,G)) is well-posed, is a dense Gδ-subset of A. Furthermore, when X is uniformly convex, we prove that A⧹EAo(G) and A⧹EoA(G) are σ-porous in A.
Uniform property $Γ$ and the small boundary property

Abstract:We prove that, for an action $\alpha \colon G \curvearrowright X$ of a countably infinite discrete amenable group on a compact metric space, the small boundary property is implied by uniform property $\Gamma$ of the Cartan subalgebra $(C(X) \subseteq C(X) \rtimes_\alpha G)$. The reverse implication has been demonstrated by Kerr and Szabó for free actions, from which we obtain the equivalence of the two conditions in the free case. We moreover show that, if $\alpha$ is free and minimal, then almost finiteness of $\alpha$ is implied by tracial $\mathcal{Z}$-stability of the subalgebra $(C(X) \subseteq C(X) \rtimes_\alpha G)$. The reverse implication is due to Kerr, resulting in the equivalence of these two properties as well. As an application, we prove that if $\alpha \colon G \curvearrowright X$ and $\beta \colon H \curvearrowright Y$ are free actions and $\alpha$ has the small boundary property, then $\alpha \times \beta \colon G \times H \curvearrowright X \times Y$ has the small boundary property. An analogous permanence property is obtained for almost finiteness in case $\alpha$ and $\beta$ are free minimal actions.

Abstract:The embedding theorem of Roelcke and Dierolf for the completions of four standard uniform structures on topological groups and their quotients holds more generally for spaces of uniform measures. The natural mappings between the four spaces of uniform measures on a topological group are injective and their restrictions to positive cones are topological embeddings. The same holds for spaces of uniform measures on the quotient of a topological group by a neutral subgroup.

Uniform exponential mixing for congruence covers of convex cocompact hyperbolic manifolds

Abstract:Let $\Gamma$ be a Zariski dense convex cocompact subgroup contained in an arithmetic lattice of $\operatorname{SO}(n, 1)^{\circ}$. We prove uniform exponential mixing of the geodesic flow for congruence covers of the hyperbolic manifold $\Gamma \backslash \mathbb{H}^n$ avoiding finitely many prime ideals. This extends the work of Oh-Winter who proved the result for the $n = 2$ case. Following their approach, we use Dolgopyat's method for the proof of exponential mixing of the geodesic flow. We do this uniformly over congruence covers by establishing uniform spectral bounds for the congruence transfer operators associated to the geodesic flow. This requires another key ingredient which is the expander machinery due to Bourgain-Gamburd-Sarnak extended by Golsefidy-Varjú.

Abstract:We show that, given a Banach space $X$, the Lipschitz-free space over $X$, denoted by $\mathcal{F}(X)$, is isomorphic to $(\sum_{n=1}^\infty \mathcal{F}(X))_{\ell_1}$. Some applications are presented, including a non-linear version of Pelczyśki's decomposition method for Lipschitz-free spaces and the identification up to isomorphism between $\mathcal{F}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ and the Lipschitz-free space over any compact metric space which is locally bi-Lipschitz embeddable into $\mathbb{R}^n$ and which contains a subset that is Lipschitz equivalent to the unit ball of $\mathbb{R}^n$. We also show that $\mathcal{F}(M)$ is isomorphic to $\mathcal{F}(c_0)$ for all separable metric spaces $M$ which are absolute Lipschitz retracts and contain a subset which is Lipschitz equivalent to the unit ball of $c_0$. This class contains all $C(K)$ spaces with $K$ infinite compact metric (Dutrieux and Ferenczi had already proved that $\mathcal{F}(C(K))$ is isomorphic to $\mathcal{F}(c_0)$ for those $K$ using a different method). Finally we study Lipschitz-free spaces over certain unions and quotients of metric spaces, extending a result by Godard.

Abstract:We investigate a construction which associates a finite von Neumann algebra $M(\Gamma,\mu)$ to a finite weighted graph $(\Gamma,\mu)$. Pleasantly, but not surprisingly, the von Neumann algebra associated to to a `flower with $n$ petals' is the group von Neumann algebra of the free group on $n$ generators. In general, the algebra $M(\Gamma,\mu)$ is a free product, with amalgamation over a finite-dimensional abelian subalgebra corresponding to the vertex set, of algebras associated to subgraphs `with one edge' (or actually a pair of dual edges). This also yields `natural' examples of (i) a Fock-type model of an operator with a free Poisson distribution; and (ii) $\C \oplus \C$-valued circular and semi-circular operators.

Abstract:Let (M,φ)=(M1,φ1)∗(M2,φ2)$${(M, \varphi) = (M_1, \varphi_1) * (M_2, \varphi_2)}$$ be a free product of arbitrary von Neumann algebras endowed with faithful normal states. Assume that the centralizer M1φ1$${M_1^{\varphi_1}}$$ is diffuse. We first show that any intermediate subalgebra M1⊂Q⊂M$${M_1 \subset Q \subset M}$$ which has nontrivial central sequences in M is necessarily equal to M1. Then we obtain a general structural result for all the intermediate subalgebras M1⊂Q⊂M$${M_1 \subset Q \subset M}$$ with expectation. We deduce that any diffuse amenable von Neumann algebra can be concretely realized as a maximal amenable subalgebra with expectation inside a full nonamenable type III1 factor. This provides the first class of concrete maximal amenable subalgebras in the framework of type III factors. We finally strengthen all these results in the case of tracial free product von Neumann algebras.

Abstract:The universal C*-algebras of discrete product systems generalize the Toeplitz- Cuntz algebras and the Toeplitz algebras of discrete semigroups. We consider a semigroup P which is quasi-lattice ordered in the sense of Nica, and, for a product system p:E\to P, we study those representations of E, called covariant, which respect the lattice structure of P. We identify a class of product systems, which we call compactly aligned, for which there is a purely C*-algebraic characterization of covariance, and study the algebra C*_{cov}(P,E) which is universal for covariant representations of E. Our main theorem is a characterization of the faithful representations of C*_{cov}(P,E) when P is the positive cone of a free product of totally-ordered amenable groups.

Abstract:Let G be a group and A , B , C be subgroups of G . In this paper, we prove that if G=AB∪BC , then G = AB or G = BC . But, in general, G=AB∪AC does not imply that G = AB or G = AC . We also prove that if G is a 2-decomposed group, and G is a Sylow tower group or G is nilpotent-by-nilpotent, then G=AB∪AC implies that G = AB or G = AC . Other interesting special cases are also discussed.

Abstract:We study uniform perturbations of crossed product C$^*$-algebras by amenable groups. Given a unital inclusion of C$^*$-algebras $C\subseteq D$ and sufficiently close separable intermediate C$^*$-subalgebras $A$, $B$ for this inclusion with a conditional expectation from $D$ onto $B$, if $A=C\rtimes G$ with $G$ discrete amenable, then $A$ and $B$ are isomorphic. Furthermore, if $C\subseteq D$ is irreducible, then $A=B$.

On free regular and Bondesson convolution semigroups

Abstract:Free regular convolution semigroups describe the distribution of free subortinators, while Bondesson class convolution semigroups correspond to classical subordinators with completely monotone Levy density. We show that these two classes of convolution semigroups are in bijection with the class of complete Bernstein functions and we establish an integral identity linking the two semigroups. We provide several explicit examples that illustrate this result.

Abstract:We characterize those (continuously-normed) Banach bundles $\mathcal{E}\to X$ with compact Hausdorff base whose spaces $\Gamma(\mathcal{E})$ of global continuous sections are topologically finitely-generated over the function algebra $C(X)$, answering a question of I. Gogić's and extending analogous work for metrizable $X$. Conditions equivalent to topological finite generation include: (a) the requirement that $\mathcal{E}$ be locally trivial and of finite type along locally closed and relatively $F_{\sigma}$ strata in a finite stratification of $X$; (b) the decomposability of arbitrary elements in $\ell^p(\Gamma(\mathcal{E}))$, $1\le p<\infty$ as sums of $\le N$ products in $\ell^p(C(X))\cdot \Gamma(\mathcal{E})$ for some fixed $N$; (c) the analogous decomposability requirement for maximal Banach-module tensor products $F\widehat{\otimes}_{C(X)}\Gamma(\mathcal{E})$ or (d) equivalently, only for $F=\ell^1(C(X))$.
