Abstract:Building on a recent construction of G. Plebanek and the third named author, it is shown that a complemented subspace of a Banach lattice need not be linearly isomorphic to a Banach lattice. This solves a long-standing open question in Banach lattice theory.

Abstract:It is shown that every separable reflexive Banach space is a quotient of a reflexive Hereditarily Indecomposable space, which yields that every separable reflexive Banach is isomorphic to a subspace of a reflexive Indecomposable space. Furthermore, every separable reflexive Banach space is a quotient of a reflexive complementably $\ell_p$ saturated space with $1<p<\infty$ and of a $c_0$ saturated space.

Abstract:A Banach space $X$ is reflexive if the Mackey topology $\tau(X^*,X)$ on $X^*$ agrees with the norm topology on $X^*$. Borwein [B] calls a Banach space $X$ {\it sequentially reflexive\/} provided that every $\tau(X^*,X)$ convergent {\it sequence\/} in $X^*$ is norm convergent. The main result in [B] is that $X$ is sequentially reflexive if every separable subspace of $X$ has separable dual, and Borwein asks for a characterization of sequentially reflexive spaces. Here we answer that question by proving \proclaim Theorem. {\sl A Banach space $X$ is sequentially reflexive if and only if $\ell_1$ is not isomorphic to a subspace of $X$.}

Abstract:We prove that, for every compact spaces $K_1,K_2$ and compact group $G$, if both $K_1$ and $K_2$ map continuously onto $G$, then the Banach space $C(K_1 \times K_2)$ contains a complemented subspace isometric to the Banach space $C(G)$. Consequently, $C(K_1\times K_2)$ contains a complemented copy of $C([0,1])$ for every non-scattered $K_1,K_2$. Also, answering a question of Alspach and Galego, we get that $C(\beta\omega\times\beta\omega)$ contains a complemented copy of $C([0,1]^\kappa)$ for every cardinal number $1\le\kappa\le{\mathfrak c}$ and hence a complemented copy of $C(K)$ for every metric compact space $K$. On the other hand, for the pointwise topology, we show that $C_p(\beta\omega\times\beta\omega)$ contains no complemented copy of $C_p(2^\omega)$.

Abstract:Based on an application of the Davis-Figiel-Johnson-Pelzyśki procedure, this note shows that every weakly compact subset of a Banach space can be uniformly embedded into a reflexive Banach space. As its application, we present the recent renorming theorems for reflexive spaces of Odell-Schlumprecht and Hájek-Johanis can be extended and localized to weakly compact convex subsets of an arbitrary Banach space.

Abstract:We introduce the notion of isometric envelope of a subspace in a Banach space, establishing its connections with several key elements: (a) we explore its relation to the mean ergodic projection on fixed points within a semigroup of contractions, (b) we draw parallels with Korovkin sets from the 1970s, (c) we investigate its impact on the extension properties of linear isometric embeddings. We use this concept to address the recent conjecture that the Gurarij space and the spaces , are the only separable approximately ultrahomogeneous Banach spaces (a certain multidimensional transitivity of the action of the linear isometry group). The similar conjecture for Fraïssé Banach spaces (a strengthening of the approximately homogeneous property) is also considered. We characterize the Hilbert space as the only separable reflexive space in which any closed subspace coincides with its envelope; and we show that the Gurarij space satisfies the same property. We compute some envelopes in the case of Lebesgue spaces, showing that the reflexive -spaces are the only reflexive rearrangement invariant spaces on [0, 1] for which all 1-complemented subspaces are envelopes. We also identify the isometrically unique "full" quotient space of by a Hilbertian subspace, for appropriate values of p , as well as the associated topological group embedding of the unitary group into the isometry group of .

Abstract:We investigate the flow generated by a magnetic stirrer in cylindrical containers by optical observations, PIV measurements and particle and dye tracking methods. The tangential flow is that of an ideal vortex outside of a core, but inside downwelling occur with a strong jet in the very middle. In the core region dye patterns remain visible over minutes indicating a pure stirring and mixing property in this region. The results of quantitative measurements can be described by simple formulas in the investigated region of the stirring bar's rotation frequency. The tangential flow turns out to be dynamically similar to that of big atmospheric vortices like dust devils and tornadoes.

Abstract:Let $X,Y$ be two Banach spaces and $B_{X}$ the closed unit ball of $X$. We prove that if there is an isometry $f:B_{X}\rightarrow Y$ with $f(0)=0$, then there exists an isometry $F:X\rightarrow Y^{\ast \ast }$. If, in addition, $Y$ is weakly nearly strictly convex, then there is an isometry $F:X\rightarrow Y$. Making use of these results, we show that if $Y$ is weakly nearly strictly convex and there is an isometry $f:B_{X}\rightarrow Y$ with $f(0)=0$, then there exists a linear isometry $S:X\rightarrow Y$.

Abstract:Let X be a reflexive Banach space with an unconditional basis and Y be any Banach space. We show that X⊗̂Y has Pelczyński’s property (V) if and only if Y has Pelczyński’s property (V) and every bounded linear operator from X to Y^* is compact. We also show that if Y is reflexive then 𝒦(X,Y) has Pelczyński’s property (V). As an application, we provide new examples of non-reflexive Banach spaces with Pelczyński’s property (V).

Abstract:Given a Banach space. We show that its three times dual space can be written as a direct sum. Then being one of the sumands null is a necessary and sufficient condition for the dual space to be reflexive. We end with an application of this result to the known relationship between the reflexivity of a Banach space and that of its dual space.

Abstract:In this survey paper we present known results about reflexive subspace lattices. We show that every nest and every atomic Boolean subspace lattice in a complex Banach space is reflexive, even strongly reflexive. Our main tool is Ringrose's Lemma about presence of rank-one operators in a reflexive algebra of operators. We consider realizations of small lattices as subspace lattices in Banach spaces. We exhibit some realizations of the pentagon and prove that some of these realizations are reflexive. On the other hand, we show that double triangle subspace lattices in finite-dimensional Banach spaces are non-reflexive.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a Banach space and $(\Omega,\Sigma)$ be a measure space. We provide a characterization of sequences in the space of $X$-valued countably additive measures on $\Omega,\Sigma)$ of bounded variation that generate complemented copies of $\ell_1$. As application, we prove that if a dual Banach space $E^*$ has Pe\l czy\'nski's property (V*) then so does the space of $E^*$-valued countably additive measures with bounded variation. Another application, we show that for a Banach space $X$, the space $\ell_\infty(X)$ contains a complemented copy of $\ell_1$ if and only if $X$ contains all $\ell_1^n$ uniformly complemented.

Abstract:Reflexive cones in Banach spaces are cones with weakly compact intersection with the unit ball. In this paper we study the structure of this class of cones. We investigate the relations between the notion of reflexive cones and the properties of their bases. This allows us to prove a characterization of reflexive cones in term of the absence of a subcone isomorphic to the positive cone of \ell_{1}. Moreover, the properties of some specific classes of reflexive cones are investigated. Namely, we consider the reflexive cones such that the intersection with the unit ball is norm compact, those generated by a Schauder basis and the reflexive cones regarded as ordering cones in a Banach spaces. Finally, it is worth to point out that a characterization of reflexive spaces and also of the Schur spaces by the properties of reflexive cones is given.

Complements of unions: insights on spaceability and applications

Abstract:This paper presents two general criteria to determine spaceability results in the complements of unions of subspaces. The first criterion applies to countable unions of subspaces under specific conditions and is closely related to the results of Kitson and Timoney in [J. Math. Anal. Appl. \textbf{378} (2011), 680-686]. This criterion extends and recovers some classical results in this theory. The second criterion establishes sufficient conditions for the complement of a union of Lebesgue spaces to be $\left(\alpha,\beta\right)$-spaceable, or not, even when they are not locally convex. We use this result to characterize the measurable subsets having positive measure. Armed with these results, we have improved existing results in environments such as: Lebesgue measurable function sets, spaces of continuous functions, sequence spaces, nowhere Hölder function sets, Sobolev spaces, non-absolutely summing operator spaces, and even sets of functions of bounded variation.

Abstract:We extend the well known criteria of reflexivity of Banach lattices due to Lozanovsky and Lotz to the class of finitely generated Banach $C(K)$- modules. Namely we prove that a finitely generated Banach $C(K)$-module is reflexive if and only if it does not contain any subspace isomorphic to either $l^1$ or $c_0$.

Abstract:The problem of characterizing normed ordered spaces which admit a representation in the algebraic, order and norm sense as a subspace of $C(X)$, the space of all continuous functions on a compact Hausdorff space is a classical problem that has been considered by many authors. In this article we consider the more general case of calibrated ordered spaces, that is, ordered spaces with a specified family of seminorms generating its topology. For such spaces equivalent conditions on representability as a subspace of $C(X)$ for some locally compact Hausdorff space $X$, in the algebraic, order and seminorm sense are stated and proved. Some characterizations appear to be new even in the normed case. As an application of the main theorem, we state and prove a characterization of norm additivity property of two positive functionals.

On Subspaces of Indecomposable Banach Spaces

Abstract:We address the following question: what is the class of Banach spaces isomorphic to subspaces of indecomposable Banach spaces? We show that this class includes all Banach spaces of density not bigger than the continuum which do not admit $\ell_\infty$ as a quotient (equivalently do not admit a subspace isomorphic to $\ell_1(\mathfrak{c})$). This includes all Asplund spaces and all weakly Lindelöf determined Banach spaces of density not bigger than the continuum. However, we also show that this class includes some Banach spaces admitting $\ell_\infty$ as a quotient. Our method of constructing indecomposable Banach spaces above a given Banach space is a considerable modification of the method of constructing Banach spaces of continuous functions with few$^*$ operators developed before by the first-named author.
