Abstract:We find conditions on a function space $\bf{L}$ that ensure that it behaves as an $L_p$-space in the sense that any unconditional basis of a complemented subspace of $\bf{L}$ either is equivalent to the unit vector system of $\ell_2$ or has a subbasis equivalent to a disjointly supported basic sequence. This dichotomy allows us to classify the symmetric basic sequences of $\bf{L}$. Several applications to Orlicz function spaces are provided.

Abstract:A compact space X is said to be minimal if there exists a map f : X → X such that the forward orbit of any point is dense in X. We consider rigid minimal spaces, motivated by recent results of Downarowicz, Snoha and Tywoniuk (J Dyn Differ Equ, 29:243-257, 2017) on spaces with cyclic group of homeomorphisms generated by a minimal homeomorphism, and results of the first author, Clark and Oprocha (Adv Math, 335:261-275, 2018) on spaces in which the square of every homeomorphism is a power of the same minimal homeomorphism. We show that the two classes do not coincide, which gives rise to a new class of spaces that admit minimal homeomorphisms, but no minimal maps. We modify the latter class of examples to show for the first time existence of minimal spaces with degenerate homeomorphism groups. Finally, we give a method of constructing decomposable compact and connected spaces with cyclic group of homeomorphisms, generated by a minimal homeomorphism, answering a question in Downarowicz et al.
Minimal Submanifolds and Waists of Locally Symmetric Spaces

Abstract:We study the higher expansion properties of locally symmetric spaces, with a particular focus on octonionic hyperbolic manifolds. We show that codimension two minimal submanifolds of compact octonionic locally symmetric spaces must have large volume, at least linear in the volume of the ambient space. As a corollary we prove linear waist inequalities for octonionic hyperbolic manifolds in codimension two and construct the first locally symmetric examples of power-law systolic freedom. We also show that any codimension two submanifold of small volume can be homotoped to a lower dimensional set. We use this to prove that branched covers of octonionic hyperbolic manifolds are stable in the sense of Dinur-Meshulam and to establish a uniform lower bound on the non-abelian Cheeger constants of octonionic hyperbolic manifolds. In a more general setting, we prove that maps from locally symmetric spaces to low dimensional euclidean spaces admit fibers whose fundamental group has large exponent of growth. We show as a consequence that cocompact lattices in $SL_n(\mathbb{R})$ have property $ FA_{\lfloor n/8\rfloor-1}$: any action on a contractible $CAT(0)$ simplicial complex of dimension at most $ \lfloor n/8\rfloor -1$ has a global fixed point.

Tight-minimal dichotomies in Banach spaces

Abstract:We extend the methods used by V. Ferenczi and Ch. Rosendal to obtain the `third dichotomy' in the program of classification of Banach spaces up to subspaces, in order to prove that a Banach space E with an admissible system of blocks with admissible set A, contains an infinite dimensional subspace with a basis which is either A-tight or A-minimal. In this setting we obtain, in particular, dichotomies regarding subsequences of a basis, and as a corollary, we show that every normalized basic sequence has a subsequence which either satisfies a tightness property or is spreading. Other dichotomies between notions of minimality and tightness are demonstrated, and the Ferenczi-Godefroy interpretation of tightness in terms of Baire category is extended to this new context.

Abstract:It is proved that, if $(P_n)$ is a sequence of polynomials with complex coefficients having unbounded valences and tending to infinity at sufficiently many points, then there is an infinite dimensional closed subspace of entire functions, as well a dense $\mathfrak{c}$-dimensional subspace of entire functions, all of whose nonzero members are hypercyclic for the corresponding sequence $(P_n(D))$ of differential operators. In both cases, the subspace can be chosen so as to contain any prescribed hypercylic function.

Abstract:Let $\cal M$ be a semi-finite von Neumann algebra equipped with a distinguished faithful, normal, semi-finite trace $\tau$. We introduce the notion of equi-integrability in non-commutative spaces and show that if a rearrangement invariant quasi-Banach function space $E$ on the positive semi-axis is $\alpha$-convex with constant 1 and satisfies a non-trivial lower $q$-estimate with constant 1, then the corresponding non-commutative space of measurable operators $E({\cal M}, \tau)$ has the following property: every bounded sequence in $E({\cal M}, \tau)$ has a subsequence that splits into a $E$-equi-integrable sequence and a sequence with pairwise disjoint projection supports. This result extends the well known Kadec-Pe\l czy\'nski subsequence decomposition for Banach lattices to non-commutative spaces. As applications, we prove that for $1\leq p <\infty$, every subspace of $L^p(\cal M, \tau)$ either contains almost isometric copies of $\ell^p$ or is strongly embedded in $L^p(\cal M, \tau)$.

Abstract:Suppose A is a unital subhomogeneous C*-algebra. We show that every central sequence in A is hypercentral if and only if every pointwise limit of a sequence of irreducible representations is multiplicity free. We also show that every central sequence in A is trivial if and only if every pointwise limit of irreducible representations is irreducible. We also give a nice repesentation of the latter algebras.

Abstract:A collection D of subsets of a space is minimal if each element of D contains a point which is not contained in any other element of D. Abase of a topological space is sigma-minimal if it can be written as a union of countably many minimal collections. We will construct a compact linearly ordered space X satisfying that X is not metrizable and every subspace of X has a sigma-minimal base for its relative topology. This answers a problem of Bennett and Lutzer in the negative.

Abstract:First, we solve a crucial problem under which conditions increasing uniform K-monotonicity is equivalent to lower locally uniform K-monotonicity. Next, we investigate properties of substochastic operators on $L^1+L^\infty$ with applications. Namely, we show that a countable infinite combination of substochastic operators is also substochastic. Using K-monotonicity properties, we prove several theorems devoted to the convergence of the sequence of substochastic operators in the norm of a symmetric space E under addition assumption on E. In our final discussion we focus on compactness of admissible operators for arbitrary Banach couples.

Abstract:In this paper we compute the minimal number of Darboux chart needed to cover a Hermitian symmetric space of compact type in terms of the degree of their embeddings in $\mathbb{C} P^N$. The proof is based on the recent work of Y. B. Rudyak and F. Schlenk [18] and on the symplectic geometry tool developed by the first author in collaboration with A. Loi and F. Zuddas [12]. As application we compute this number for a large class of Hermitian symmetric spaces of compact type.

Abstract:A topological space is said to be sequential if every sequentially closed subspace is closed. We consider Banach spaces with weak*-sequential dual ball. In particular, we show that if $X$ is a Banach space with weak*-sequentially compact dual ball and $Y \subset X$ is a subspace such that $Y$ and $X/Y$ have weak*-sequential dual ball, then $X$ has weak*-sequential dual ball. As an application we obtain that the Johnson-Lindenstrauss space $JL_2$ and $C(K)$ for $K$ scattered compact space of countable height are examples of Banach spaces with weak*-sequential dual ball, answering in this way a question of A. Plichko.

Abstract:There exists a d-minimal expansion of the $\mathbb R$-vector space over $\mathbb R$ which defines every sequence. In this paper, we prove this assertion and the following more general assertion: Let $\mathcal R$ be either the ordered $\mathbb R$-vector space structure over $\mathbb R$ or the ordered group of reals. A first-order expansion of $\mathcal R$ by a countable subset $D$ of $\mathbb R$ and a compact subset $E$ of $\mathbb R$ of finite Cantor-Bendixson rank is d-minimal if $(\mathcal R,D)$ is locally o-minimal.
