Abstract:A reflexive Banach space with an unconditional basis admits an equivalent $1$-unconditional $2R$ norm and embeds into a reflexive space with a $1$-symmetric $2R$ norm. Partial results on $1$-symmetric $2R$ renormings of spaces with a symmetric basis are obtained.

The main results are summarized as follows:1. ss(E) is locally uniformly rotund if and only if ss and E are locally uniformly rotund;2. ss(E) is strongly rotund if and only if ss and E are strongly rotund;3. Abstract:We prove that every separable infinite-dimensional Banach space admits a G\^ateaux smooth and rotund norm which is not midpoint locally uniformly rotund. Moreover, by using a similar technique, we provide in every infinite-dimensional Banach space with separable dual a Fr\'echet smooth and weakly uniformly rotund norm which is not midpoint locally uniformly rotund. These two results provide a positive answer to some open problems by A. J. Guirao, V. Montesinos, and V. Zizler.

Abstract:In the present paper, we introduce and study a class N of norms alpha on the sequence space C-00, called permutation symmetric gauge norms, which properly contains the classical class of {parallel to.parallel to(p) : 1 <= p <= infinity}. For each alpha is an element of N, we define the generalized sequence space l(alpha), which is proved to be a Banach space, and then we obtain a characterization of l(alpha) in terms of the projection onto C-00. For the duality, the expected results in the classical sequence spaces l(p) (1 <= p <= infinity) are still valid in these new settings, including the characterization of dual space and the existence of Holder's inequality. It is worthy pointing out that the generalized sequence space l(alpha) is not a reflexive space, which is different from the usual sequence spaces.

In this paper, we construct p -summable vector-valued sequence spaces in non-Archimedean 2-normed spaces l p ( X ) for 1 ≤ p ≤ ∞. Futhermore, we show that l p ( X ) is a non-Archimedean 2-semi-normed spaces and we also give some inclusion relations on l p ( X ).

Abstract:One of the hallmarks in the study of the classification of Banach spaces with a unique (normalized) unconditional basis was the unexpected result by Bourgain, Casazza, Lindenstrauss, and Tzafriri from their 1985 Memoir that the 2-convexified Tsirelson space had that property (up to equivalence and permutation). Indeed, on one hand, finding a "pathological" space (i.e., not built out as a direct sum of the only three classical sequence spaces with a unique unconditional basis) shattered the hopeful optimism of attaining a satisfactory description of all Banach spaces which enjoy that important structural feature. On the other hand it encouraged furthering a research topic that had received relatively little attention until then. After forty years, the advances on the subject have shed light onto the underlying patterns shared by those spaces with a unique unconditional bases belonging to the same class, which has led to reproving the original theorems with fewer technicalities. Our motivation in this note is to revisit the aforementioned result on the uniqueness of unconditional basis of from the current state-of-art of the subject and to fill in some details that we missed from the original proof.

An asymptotic analog of a local-to-global phenomenon for uniformly convex renormings

Abstract:In this note, we investigate the renorming theory of Banach spaces with property $(\beta)$ of Rolewicz. In particular, we give a "coordinate-free" proof of the fact that every Banach space with property $(\beta)$ admits an equivalent norm that is asymptotically uniformly smooth; a result originally due to Kutzarova for spaces with a Schauder basis. We also show that if a natural modulus associated with a Banach space $X$ with property $(\beta)$ is positive at some point in the interval $(0,1)$, then $X$ admits an equivalent norm with property $(\beta)$. This is an asymptotic analog of a profound result from the local geometry of Banach spaces that states that if the modulus of uniform convexity of a Banach space $X$ is positive at some point in the interval $(0,2)$, then $X$ admits an equivalent norm that is uniformly convex.

Abstract:We introduce a new diametral notion for points of the unit sphere of Banach spaces, that naturally complements the notion of Delta-points, but is weaker than the notion of Daugavet points. We prove that this notion can be used to provide a new geometric characterization of the Daugavet property, as well as to recover -- and even to provide new -- results about Daugavet points in various contexts such as absolute sums of Banach spaces or projective tensor products. Finally, we show that this notion leads to powerful new ideas for renorming questions, and that those ideas can be combined with previous constructions from the literature in order to renorm every infinite dimensional Banach space with an unconditional Schauder basis to have a Daugavet point.

Abstract:We introduce and study a strict monotonicity property of the norm in solid Banach lattices of real functions that prevents such spaces from having the local diameter two property. Then we show that any strictly convex 1-symmetric norm on $\ell_\infty(\mathbb N)$ possesses this strict monotonicity property. In the opposite direction, we show that any Banach space which is strictly convex renormable and contains a complemented copy of $c_0,$ admits an equivalent strictly convex norm for which the space has the local diameter two property. In particular, this enables us to construct a strictly convex norm on $c_0(\Gamma),$ where $\Gamma$ is uncountable, for which the space has a 1-unconditional basis and the local diameter two property.

Abstract:General $(\alpha, \beta)$ norms are an important class of Minkowski norms which contains the original $(\alpha, \beta)$ norms. In this note, by studying the behavior of the Darboux curves of the indicatrix, we give a characterization of 3-dimensional general $(\alpha, \beta)$ norms. By studying the isoperimetric properties of the indicatrix, as well as the isoperimetric inequalities in a Minkowski space, we give some global geometric quantities which characterizes Randers norms of arbitrary dimensions.

Abstract:In this work, we study the non rough norms in Banach spaces with small diameter properties, namely the Ball Dentable Property (BDP), the Ball Huskable Property (BHP) and the Ball Small Combination of Slice Property (BSCSP). We introduce two more notions of non rough norms, namely the weakly average non rough norms and average non rough norms in Banach spaces. We prove the duality between these three versions of non rough norms and the small diameter properties in Banach spaces. We also prove that each of the three non rough norms is a three space property under certain assumptions.

Abstract:We investigate the flow generated by a magnetic stirrer in cylindrical containers by optical observations, PIV measurements and particle and dye tracking methods. The tangential flow is that of an ideal vortex outside of a core, but inside downwelling occur with a strong jet in the very middle. In the core region dye patterns remain visible over minutes indicating a pure stirring and mixing property in this region. The results of quantitative measurements can be described by simple formulas in the investigated region of the stirring bar's rotation frequency. The tangential flow turns out to be dynamically similar to that of big atmospheric vortices like dust devils and tornadoes.

Abstract:We define new norms for symmetric tensors over ordered normed spaces; these norms are defined by considering linear combinations of tensor products or powers of positive elements only. Relations between the different norms are studied. The results are applied to the problem of representing a finitely exchangeable distribution as a mixture of powers, i.e, mixture of distributions of i.i.d. sequences, using a signed mixing measure.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the linear direct sum of a real normed linear space with an order unit space and with a base normed space to obtain respectively a new order unit space and a new base normed space. As a consequence, we find that an $\ell_1$-space may be shown to be an order unit space. (However, not in the natural order.) Dually, an $\ell_{\infty}$-space may be shown to be a base normed space. To understand this aberration, we characterize the real normed linear spaces which are isometrically isomorphic to order unit spaces. We prove that other than the classical case of $\ell_{\infty}$, $\ell_1$ is also isometrically isomorphic to an order unit space whereas $\ell_2$ is not isometrically isomorphic to any order unit space.
