Abstract:The energy consumption in water distribution systems (WDSs) is significant. Improving the efficiency of pump operation can significantly reduce energy costs. However, optimal pump operation is a nonconvex mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) problem, which can be challenging to solve. A feasible approach is to linearize the problem and convert it into a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) problem. However, this approach introduces many auxiliary variables, which can lead to inefficiency in finding the optimal solution due to the expanded search space. To address this issue, we propose a novel method for linearization of the original MINLP problem and a strategy that can adaptively adjust the number of piecewise linearization breakpoints. By reducing the number of auxiliary variables, our approach achieved competitive computing efficiency and the ability to save energy costs, as demonstrated in two benchmark instances. Furthermore, in a realistic large-scale WDS, our approach saved 9.83% more energy costs than the genetic algorithm and achieved a gap of only 7.36% from the lower bound.(c) 2023 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:Apart from water quality, leakage control and energy consumption management are the most concerning challenges for water treatment plants (WTPs). The joint scheduling of pumps and pressure reducing valves (PRVs) in the water distribution network can reduce excessive pressure and distribute pressure more evenly, which achieves comprehensive reduction of leakages and energy consumption. Taking into account the main shortcomings of the commonly used methods, such as scheduling pumps or PRVs separately, or optimizing PRV settings when their position is given, etc., this paper has taken the PRV (position and setting) and the working status of variable speed pumps (VSPs) as decision variables and the cost savings contributed by leakage reduction and energy consumption savings as the objective function, which maximized the economic benefits brought by PRV and/or VSP scheduling. A genetic algorithm (GA) was used to optimize the solution under multiple working conditions. The performance of three control strategies (PRV-only scheduling, VSP-only scheduling, and joint scheduling of PRVs and VSPs) are compared to each other based on a small network. Joint scheduling has achieved the best economic benefits in reducing the gross cost (contributed by leakage and energy consumption) of the three control strategies, which results in a leakage reduction of 33.4%, an energy consumption reduction of 25.4%, and a total cost reduction of 33.1%, when compared to the original network, and saving about 1148 m(3) water (7% of the original consumption) and 722 kWh electric energy (25.4% of the original consumption) per day.

Abstract:Delivering drinking water from water treatment plants (WTPs) to customer taps results in significant energy consumption and water loss due to leakage. The energy consumption involved in this process includes both the energy used in the water distribution networks (WDNs) and buildings. Existing research primarily focuses on optimizing energy consumption in WDNs while ignoring the energy consumption at buildings. Building height and water supply mode are crucial factors that impact energy consumption. A building hydraulic model involving various supply modes coupled with the WDN hydraulic model is developed to calculate the energy consumption and leakage from WTPs to taps. An optimization model is then proposed to minimize expenses by placing regional pump stations (RPSs) and scheduling pumps in WTPs. The application of the proposed method to a realistic WDN resulted in a 1.17% decrease in energy consumption and a 6.98% reduction in water leakage compared to traditional methods.

Abstract:In recent years, pressure management based on district metering areas (DMAs) has played an irreplaceable role in background leakage reduction in water distribution networks (WDNs). To further improve DMA management, this paper describes a novel sectorization method to optimize the reduction of background leakage. First, the network trunk mains are optimally selected using a proposed evaluation index which contains three reference indicators and the resulting isolated regions are identified through graph theory algorithm. Meanwhile, a modified community detection algorithm is adopted to partition the oversized regions considering both elevation uniformity within DMAs and demand uniformity across DMAs. Then the optimal layout of flow meters (i.e., inlet pipes) and gate valves is achieved by solving a two-objective optimization for minimizing the number of flow meters and cumulative pressure differences compared with critical points in each DMA. Finally, pressure-reducing valves (PRVs) are installed in every inlet pipe and optimized to reduce leakage. The overall procedure is applied to a medium-sized network. The results reveal that the proposed sectorization methodology combined with pressure management can efficiently reduce leakage by controlling excess hydraulic capacity.

Abstract:Optimizing pump operations is a challenging task for real-time management of water distribution systems (WDSs). With suitable pump scheduling, pumping costs can be significantly reduced. In this research, a novel economic model predictive control (EMPC) framework for real-time management of WDSs is proposed. Optimal pump operations are selected based on predicted system behavior over a receding time horizon with the aim to minimize the total pumping energy cost. Time-varying electricity tariffs are considered while all the required water demands are satisfied. The novelty of this framework is to choose the number of pumps to operate in each pump station as decision variables in order to optimize the total pumping energy costs. By using integer programming, the proposed EMPC is applied to a benchmark case study, the Richmond Pruned network. The simulation with an EPANET hydraulic simulator is implemented. Moreover, a comparison of the results obtained using the proposed EMPC with those obtained using trigger-level control demonstrates significant economic benefits of the proposed EMPC.

Abstract:This paper is aimed at the realization method and control logic of variable-pressure and energy-saving water supply strategy for parallel pumps by theoretical and experimental research. The PLC, combined with frequency converters, has been used as control-system of the new control strategy. In addition, the intelligent variable-pressure control was realized by modeling water demand estimation for piping system, variable-pressure control and the pump increased or decreased control, based on energy-efficiency condition. Suggested by the experiment results, the water demand estimation model is reliable with high sensibility and accuracy up to 90%. Besides, the control effect and energy-efficiency of pumps are improved effectively owing to the optimization control strategy. The obtained results can be referred by both the energy-saving optimization of parallel pumping system and the development of variable-pressure water supply mode.

Abstract:Automation and control systems are constantly evolving, using artificial intelligence techniques to implement new forms of control, such as fuzzy control, with advantages over classic control strategies, especially in non-linear systems. Water supply networks are complex systems with different operating configurations, uninterrupted operation requirements, equalization capacity and pressure control in the supply networks, and high reliability. In this sense, this work aims to develop a fuzzy pressure control system for a supply system with three possible operating configurations: a single motor pump, two motor pumps in series, or two motor pumps in parallel. For each configuration, an energy efficiency analysis was carried out according to the demand profile established in this case study. In order to validate the proposed methodology, an experimental water supply system was used, located in the Laboratory of Energy Efficiency and Hydraulics in Sanitation at the Federal University of Paraiba (LENHS/UFPB).

Abstract:Pumping systems are among the most energy-consuming applications, making its efficient operation a matter of great relevance. In recent years, efforts to improve the efficiency of these systems have followed two approaches. The first involves the design and development of new efficient pump models, in studies primarily based on the internal flow behaviour and impeller geometrical parameters. This approach, albeit useful, does not consider whether these efficient pump models have been correctly selected. The second approach addresses the energy-saving potential achievable through the pumping system itself, including the proper pump selection, which is a research area that still offers opportunities for improvement. The primary objective of this work is to create a methodology to identify whether a pump has been efficiently selected for a given hydraulic system. To achieve this, the two main criteria currently used for evaluating the efficient selection of pumps are discussed: the POR-Q and the POR- . The results demonstrate that the proposed methodology correctly identifies high-efficiency pumps for operating in a given system. It is shown that the flow rate interval where the pump can operate with high efficiency, as determined by the POR- criterion, is wider than the interval obtained using the POR-Q criterion. This expansion in the available range of pump operation using the POR- criterion allows for greater availability of pumps that meet the system requirements and respond well to energy-saving strategies. This finding enables a wider choice of pumps, thereby facilitating the decision-making process.

Abstract:Water distribution management system is a costly practice and with the growth of population, the needs for creating more cost-effective solutions are vital. This paper presents a tool for optimization of pump operation in water systems. The pump scheduling tool (PST) is a fully dynamic tool that can handle four different types of fixed speed pump schedule representations (on and off, time control, time-length control, and simple control [water levels in tanks]). The PST has been developed using Visual Basic programming language and has a linkage between the EPANET hydraulic solver with the GANetXL optimization algorithm. It has a user-friendly interface which allows the simulation of water systems based on (1) a hydraulic model (EPANET) input file, (2) an interactive interface which can be modified by the user, and (3) a pump operation schedule generated by the optimization algorithm. It also has the interface of dynamic results which automatically visualizes generated solutions. The capabilities of the PST have been demonstrated by application to two real case studies, Anytown water distribution system (WDS) and Richmond WDS as a real one in the United Kingdom. The results show that PST is able to generate high-quality practical solutions.
Data-driven Predictive Energy Optimization in a Wastewater Pumping Station

Abstract:Urban wastewater sector is being pushed to optimize processes in order to reduce energy consumption without compromising its quality standards. Energy costs can represent a significant share of the global operational costs (between 50% and 60%) in an intensive energy consumer. Pumping is the largest consumer of electrical energy in a wastewater treatment plant. Thus, the optimal control of pump units can help the utilities to decrease operational costs. This work describes an innovative predictive control policy for wastewater variable-frequency pumps that minimize electrical energy consumption, considering uncertainty forecasts for wastewater intake rate and information collected by sensors accessible through the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition system. The proposed control method combines statistical learning (regression and predictive models) and deep reinforcement learning (Proximal Policy Optimization). The following main original contributions are produced: i) model-free and data-driven predictive control; ii) control philosophy focused on operating the tank with a variable wastewater set-point level; iii) use of supervised learning to generate synthetic data for pre-training the reinforcement learning policy, without the need to physically interact with the system. The results for a real case-study during 90 days show a 16.7% decrease in electrical energy consumption while still achieving a 97% reduction in the number of alarms (tank level above 7.2 meters) when compared with the current operating scenario (operating with a fixed set-point level). The numerical analysis showed that the proposed data-driven method is able to explore the trade-off between number of alarms and consumption minimization, offering different options to decision-makers.

Abstract:This article deals with the design of energy efficient water utilization systems allowing operation split. Practical features such as operating flexibility and capital cost have made the number of sub operations an important parameter of the problem. By treating the direct and indirect heat transfers separately, target freshwater and energy consumption as well as the operation split conditions are first obtained. Subsequently, a mixed integer non-linear programming (MINLP) model is established for the design of water network and the heat exchanger network (HEN). The proposed systematic approach is limited to a single contaminant. Example from literature is used to illustrate the applicability of the approach.

Abstract:Decision makers must keep in mind that water services have an invaluable ‘price’ for the public budget and society’s welfare. However, due to the specific features of the service, water utilities are prone to inefficiency. Thus, performance evaluation becomes indispensable to face this constraint. Besides the application of the traditional technique of Data Envelopment Analysis to evaluate the performance of Portuguese water utilities, this study also implements the robust technique of order-m to assess the influence of operational environment on water utilities’ performance. In spite of several reforms, the Portuguese water sector still reveals significant levels of inefficiency, partially caused by an inappropriate operating scale. Concerning the operational environment, it was possible to observe a positive influence of private sector participation, economies of scope, and groundwater sources on efficiency. The influence of the ‘quality of service provided’ was also studied in this performance analysis.

Abstract:The increasing scarcity of water sources near urban areas, coupled with urbanization and population growth, necessitates the development of solutions that optimize water demand management, which entails a more accurate estimation of consumption patterns and implementing measures that promote the rational use of water. A stochastic residential water demand model was built based on the superposition of pulses of constant intensity and variable arrival time and duration applied to the microcomponent consumption at a 1-min resolution, reflecting the aggregate system contributions to the total instantaneous demand. The model can support the planning of water supply systems (WSSs) and was calibrated using data from Brazilian institutes and a literature review of statistical data on users and end uses of water in Brazilian dwellings. Innovatively, it proposes the use of water demand forecasting aimed at applying demand management measures evaluating the replacement of conventional devices for water-saving ones by analyzing hydrographs of 50–50,000 households, in addition to detailing the influence of the K2 peak factor. The results demonstrated a new water consumption profile with about a 40% reduction in water demand. A new equation for K2 is proposed, which was shown to be underestimated for small populations.

Abstract:Water treatment facilities are critical infrastructure they must accommodate dynamic demand patterns without system disruption. These patterns can be scheduled, such as daily residential irrigation, or unexpected, such as demand spikes from withdrawals for fire management. The critical necessity of clean, safe, and reliable water requires water treatment control strategies that are insensitive to disturbances to guarantee that demand will be met. One essential problem in achieving this is the minimization of energy costs in the process of meeting water demand, especially as the need for decarbonization persists. This work develops a control-oriented hydraulic model of a water treatment facility with integrated pumped storage and introduces a model predictive control strategy for scheduling treatment plant system operations to minimize greenhouse gas emissions and safely meet water demand.
