Abstract:The energy consumption in water distribution systems (WDSs) is significant. Improving the efficiency of pump operation can significantly reduce energy costs. However, optimal pump operation is a nonconvex mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) problem, which can be challenging to solve. A feasible approach is to linearize the problem and convert it into a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) problem. However, this approach introduces many auxiliary variables, which can lead to inefficiency in finding the optimal solution due to the expanded search space. To address this issue, we propose a novel method for linearization of the original MINLP problem and a strategy that can adaptively adjust the number of piecewise linearization breakpoints. By reducing the number of auxiliary variables, our approach achieved competitive computing efficiency and the ability to save energy costs, as demonstrated in two benchmark instances. Furthermore, in a realistic large-scale WDS, our approach saved 9.83% more energy costs than the genetic algorithm and achieved a gap of only 7.36% from the lower bound.(c) 2023 Elsevier B.V. Global Energy and Leakage Optimization in Water Distribution Systems from Water Treatment Plants to Customer Taps

Abstract:Delivering drinking water from water treatment plants (WTPs) to customer taps results in significant energy consumption and water loss due to leakage. The energy consumption involved in this process includes both the energy used in the water distribution networks (WDNs) and buildings. Existing research primarily focuses on optimizing energy consumption in WDNs while ignoring the energy consumption at buildings. Building height and water supply mode are crucial factors that impact energy consumption. A building hydraulic model involving various supply modes coupled with the WDN hydraulic model is developed to calculate the energy consumption and leakage from WTPs to taps. An optimization model is then proposed to minimize expenses by placing regional pump stations (RPSs) and scheduling pumps in WTPs. The application of the proposed method to a realistic WDN resulted in a 1.17% decrease in energy consumption and a 6.98% reduction in water leakage compared to traditional methods.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to present a decomposition and multistage approach for optimizing the design of water distribution systems with multiple supply sources (WDS-MSS). An algorithm is first proposed to identify the optimal source partitioning cut-set for a WDS-MSS. A WDS with K supply sources is therefore decomposed to K disconnected subnetworks by the removal of the determined cut-set. Then, a total of K separate differential evolution (DE) algorithms are used to optimize the designs for the K subnetworks, respectively. This is the first optimization stage. The optimal solutions for the K subnetworks plus the optimal cut-set being the minimum allowable pipe sizes are used to create a tailored seeding table. This table is used to initialize a second-stage DE algorithm to optimize the whole of the original WDS, which is the second stage of the optimization process. Four WDS-MSS case studies are used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. A standard DE algorithm seeded by the total choice table rather than the tailored seeding table is applied to the entire network for each case study, and the results are compared with those of the proposed method in terms of efficiency and solution quality. The comparison demonstrates that the proposed method (i.e., decomposition followed by multistage optimization) shows better performance than results from a whole of network optimization. In addition, the proposed method also exhibits significantly improved performance compared with the optimization techniques that have been previously used to optimize these case studies. Abstract:District metered areas (DMAs) are widely used by water utilities to manage water distribution networks (WDNs). This study presents a novel methodology that couples the improved hybrid community detection algorithm and combinatorial optimization process for partitioning WDNs into DMAs. In the node clustering phase, the hybrid algorithm based on the improved modularity index enables the fast formation of sufficient partition solutions with a more balanced water demand distribution and reduced diameters of boundary pipes. Then, in the partition dividing phase, a three-step optimization method, comprising preliminary hydraulic analysis, search for a suboptimal solution and multi-objective optimization, is presented to find a fast and optimal solution for the location of flow meters and isolation valves in WDNs. The overall methodology is applied to a large-scale WDN, proving its applicability and superiority in generating engineering partition configurations.

Abstract:The raw water supply was divided into abundant period and lacking period in many cities. Getting water from multi-resource and storing up the water in the reservoirs was a common method to ensure the enough freshwater in scanty state of cities,which also made the fetching and accumulating water complicated. The microcosmic math-model which including muti-resource of water and multi-reservoirs was Established and solved by genetic algorithms(GA),and least-cost of pumps and most stored water of reservoirs were took as the aim,then the optimal scheme and optimal stored process-line of reservoirs were obtained. The model was applied to raw water netwark of ZH city and a fairly good result was obtained.

Abstract:Water distribution systems (WDSs) are vital urban infrastructure systems. To meet increasing pumping energy demands and minimise environmental impacts, behind-the-meter (BTM) solar photovoltaic (PV) systems have been considered by water utilities. However, there currently is not a systematic approach to size BTM solar PV for WDSs, considering the life cycle performance of the integrated systems. This study evaluates three methods to size BTM solar PV in pumped WDSs: 1) the heuristic method developed from current industry practice; 2) the minimum total life cycle cost (TLCC) method based on the system minimum TLCC; and 3) the minimum payback method to minimise the time needed to pay off the solar capital investment. The performance of the integrated water-solar system has been assessed against economic, energy and emissions performance metrics using two case studies. The results indicate that the heuristic method leads to the largest solar PV size, potentially oversizing the system. The minimum payback method leads to the smallest solar PV system, potentially under-sizing the system. The minimum TLCC method leads to more balanced system performance, but the solar PV size determined using this method is sensitive to the discount rate used. The insights into the performance of the system sized using the three methods provide decision-makers guidance to select appropriate solar PV systems for WDSs.

Abstract:This paper formalizes an optimal water-power flow (OWPF) problem to optimize the use of controllable assets across power and water systems while accounting for the couplings between the two infrastructures. Tanks and pumps are optimally managed to satisfy water demand while improving power grid operations; {for the power network, an AC optimal power flow formulation is augmented to accommodate the controllability of water pumps.} Unfortunately, the physics governing the operation of the two infrastructures and coupling constraints lead to a nonconvex (and, in fact, NP-hard) problem; however, after reformulating OWPF as a nonconvex, quadratically-constrained quadratic problem, a feasible point pursuit-successive convex approximation approach is used to identify feasible and optimal solutions. In addition, a distributed solver based on the alternating direction method of multipliers enables water and power operators to pursue individual objectives while respecting the couplings between the two networks. The merits of the proposed approach are demonstrated for the case of a distribution feeder coupled with a municipal water distribution network.

An Efficient Hybrid Approach for Multiobjective Optimization of Water Distribution Systems

Abstract:An efficient hybrid approach for the design of water distribution systems (WDSs) with multiple objectives is described in this paper. The objectives are the minimization of the network cost and maximization of the network resilience. A self‐adaptive multiobjective differential evolution (SAMODE) algorithm has been developed, in which control parameters are automatically adapted by means of evolution instead of the presetting of fine‐tuned parameter values. In the proposed method, a graph algorithm is first used to decompose a looped WDS into a shortest‐distance tree (T) or forest, and chords (Ω). The original two‐objective optimization problem is then approximated by a series of single‐objective optimization problems of the T to be solved by nonlinear programming (NLP), thereby providing an approximate Pareto optimal front for the original whole network. Finally, the solutions at the approximate front are used to seed the SAMODE algorithm to find an improved front for the original entire network. The proposed approach is compared with two other conventional full‐search optimization methods (the SAMODE algorithm and the NSGA‐II) that seed the initial population with purely random solutions based on three case studies: a benchmark network and two real‐world networks with multiple demand loading cases. Results show that (i) the proposed NLP‐SAMODE method consistently generates better‐quality Pareto fronts than the full‐search methods with significantly improved efficiency; and (ii) the proposed SAMODE algorithm (no parameter tuning) exhibits better performance than the NSGA‐II with calibrated parameter values in efficiently offering optimal fronts.
Energy-efficient and Reliable Coordinated Scheduling for Water Distribution Systems: Enhancing Hydraulic Conditions and Water Quality

Abstract:Multi-objective operation optimization of water distribution systems (WDSs) in large metropolitan areas is essential; however, it is complex and time-consuming. Effective and reliable scheduling of WDSs can significantly enhance the efficiency and reliability of urban water resources management, which requires further research. This paper develops an optimization method combining genetic algorithm and multiple criteria analysis that coordinates energy conservation, hydraulic condition improvement, and water age optimization in WDSs. Results showed that the optimal scheduling method could achieve a 23.0, 16.7, and 2.5% decrease in energy consumption, and water supply volume with unsatisfied pressure, and average water age, respectively. To achieve optimal results, this study indicated that it is crucial to properly allocate water supply volume and pressure across multiple drinking water treatment plants. This finding provides important guidance for water utilities in scheduling. Furthermore, the emergency scenario analysis shows that the newly proposed method can significantly enhance the social and economic sustainability of WDSs through the coordinated optimization of energy consumption, hydraulic conditions, and water age.

Abstract:To exploit the massive solar energy available in the region, photovoltaic plants have been built in the mountain areas in Southwest China, coexisting with many small cascaded run-of-the-river hydropower plants, interconnected by short-distance transmission lines. Network constraints inside these systems are often negligible. However, due to the volatile nature of solar power and the weak connection to the external power grid, without proper coordination, solar power curtailment and water spillage are inevitable. To address this issue, this paper proposes an ultra-short-term stochastic generation control method for cascaded hydropower to mitigate solar power volatility. Two technical challenges are specifically addressed: to tackle the time-varying stochastic volatility of solar power, the Itô process model is introduced; to characterize the spatial-temporal hydraulic coupling of the cascaded hydropower plants and river operation constraints, a state-space dynamic river model derived from shallow water equations is included. Followingly, a stochastic control (SC) approach for hydropower generation based on stochastic programming is proposed, where hydropower generation commands are parameterized as affine functions of measured solar power, enabling quick response to solar power volatility. Simulation of a real-life cascaded hydro-solar system and a modified system verifies the proposed control method.

Abstract:A new methodology is developed for determining the optimal miniumcost design of water distribution systems. The components that can be sized are the pipe network, pumps or pump station, and tanks. In addition, the optimal settings for control and pressurereducing valves can be determined. This methodology couples nonlinear programming techniques with existing water distribution simulation models. Previous methodologies have typically simplified the system hydraulics to be able to solve the optimization problem. This new methodology retains the generality of the hydraulic simulation model so that the problem is only limited by the ability of the simulation model rather than the optimization model. The methodology uses a generalized reduced gradient model to solve a problem that is reduced in size and complexity by implicitly solving the conservation of mass and energy equations using the hydraulic simulator and an augmented Lagrangian approach to incorporate pressure head bounds in the objective function. Since the network equations are solved implicitly any number of demand patterns can be considered, including steady state loads, extended period simulations, or both.

Abstract:The water resource is considerably abundant and the penetration of photovoltaic (PV) power generation is gradually increasing in some areas. Due to the fluctuation of PV-alone power generation, a hybrid system with energy storage is a promising solution to improve the reliability. In this paper, an optimal operation strategy based on particle swarm optimization (PSO) of the pumped hydro storage (PHS) in the PV-PHS hybrid system is proposed, which aims to achieve minimum all-day load loss in order to increase the reliability of the PV-PHS hybrid system. Two scenarios, a winter weekday and a summer weekday, are chosen to study the proposed optimal operation strategy based on PSO. The results demonstrate that the proposed optimal operation strategy is a feasible method to achieve minimum all-day load loss.
Scenario Based Cost Optimization of Water Distribution Networks Powered by Grid-Connected Photovoltaic Systems

Abstract:The paper presents a predictive control method for the water distribution networks (WDNs) powered by photovoltaics (PVs) and the electrical grid. This builds on the controller introduced in a previous study and is designed to reduce the economic costs associated with operating the WDN. To account for the uncertainty of the system, the problem is solved in a scenario optimization framework, where multiple scenarios are sampled from the uncertain variables related to PV power production. To accomplish this, a day-ahead PV power prediction method with a stochastic model is employed. The method is tested on a high-fidelity model of a WDN of a Danish town and the results demonstrate a substantial reduction in electrical costs through the integration of PVs, with PVs supplying $66.95\%$ of the required energy. The study also compares the effectiveness of the stochastic optimization method with a deterministic optimization approach.

Abstract:The main aim of optimal schedule of traditional water distribution system is to reduce energy consumption, without consideration of minimizing network leakage. This research is on the premise of meeting water demand, pressure and quality, at same time taking the minimization of network leakage and power consumption as the optimization objectives, taking pump and valve opening and closing as decision variables, to build leakage control model of multi-source water distribution system by optimal pump schedule. On the basis of this model, the partition scheme and pump scheduling of water supply system are determined; the NSGA-II algorithm is used for solving the optimisation problem. By applying it to practical water supply network in HD city, the results showed thatthis method can simultaneously reduce power consumption and network leakage.

Abstract:With the fast paced development and integration of the renewable sources into the grid, it is essential to design and develop the storage system effectively to complement the renewable power generation so that the renewable energy system is not only reliable but also cost-effective. The pumped storage is an optimal, economically viable, and scalable solution for renewable energy integration with the grid. This paper proposes the optimal sizing of grid-connected solar–wind hybrid renewable energy systems (HRES) involving pumped storage hydro-power station (PSHS). The main goal is to determine the optimal combination of the PV-WT-PSHS hybrid system to minimize the levelized cost of energy (LCOE) subjected to the constraints which improve the system reliability and also promotes the use of maximum renewable fraction to meet the total load requirement. Further, the random inflow during the rainy season is modeled and its impact on the sizing of the HRES is also analyzed in this work. The effect of random inflow on sizing of the HRES is novel and has not been applied any optimal sizing studies in the literature. The optimal sizing is carried out by using a newly proposed algorithm called search space reduction (SSR) algorithm. Further, an improved search space reduction (ISSR) algorithm is also developed and applied to the same problem. The optimization is carried out in two scenarios; with and without including the random inflow, and the results indicate that when the random inflow is included, the cost per unit is significantly lesser. For validating the effectiveness of the ISSR algorithm, the results were compared to the other well-known algorithms such as grey wolf optimizer (GWO), teaching-learning based optimization (TLBO) the obtained also demonstrate the superiority of ISSR algorithm as it is able to achieve minimum value of objective function when compare to the other algorithms.

Abstract:In this study, a novel sizing model for the solar photovoltaic system with pumped storage is proposed, to optimize the capacity of the PV generator and pumped storage system for power supply in remote areas. The genetic algorithm is then employed to optimize sizing system with respect to the system total cost. The variables considered in the optimization process include PV module number, upper reservoir size and water pump size. With the developed model, a technically and economically feasible power supply solution can be achieved easily. The proposed model is finally applied to a case study on renewable energy power generation system for an island, and the optimization performance has been demonstrated.

Abstract:The integration of high proportion variable renewable energy sources (RES) has greatly threatened the safe and stable operation of power systems. Considering the complementary characteristics of various RES, this paper proposes a short-term optimization model for cascade hydropower stations coupled with renewable-based generations including wind and photovoltaic (PV). Based on autoregressive moving average (ARMA) model and copula function, a joint distribution model for power output of wind and PV is built with measured data and substantial scenarios are produced. Due to the nonlinear curve of forebay elevation - reservoir volume and tailwater elevation - water flow in hydropower stations, several linearization approaches are used to reformulate the optimization model into a tractable form. Hydraulic relationship and time delay of water flow between cascade reservoirs are established to make full use of the controllable complementarity of hydropower generations, and the variability of wind and PV power output can be mitigated. A basin in southwest China with wind farms and solar arrays is chosen as a detailed study case. The simulation results demonstrate the applicability and effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Abstract:The economic development of any country is closely linked with the consumption of energy. Therefore, international policies encourage increasing penetration of renewable energy sources (RES) into the electrical grid in order to reduce CO2 emissions and cover ever-increasing demands. However, high variance of RES complicates their integration into power systems and complicates their transition from central to distributed energy sources. On the other hand, increasing the penetration of RES in electrical networks stimulates the demand for large capacity for energy storage. This paper presents a new approach to optimize the size of on-grid renewable energy systems integrated to pumped storage system using Salp Swarm Algorithm (SSA). This approach allows the examination of various energy sources and their combination to handle the optimal configuration of the hybrid system. The simulation and optimization process of the studied system have been carried out by MATLAB programming. The impact of the system under study on the grid is examined according to the power exchange values between the system and the grid. Moreover, different scenarios have been introduced for optimal operation. The simulation results indicate that these hybrid systems can reduce power exchange with the grid and ensure that the proposed system is economically and environmentally feasible. Furthermore, the results indicate the technical feasibility of seawater hydroelectric power plants in increasing the capacity of the electric grid to allow for high penetration of RES. Finally, the results showed that the best minimum value of the objective function is 3.9113 and showed that CO2 emission can be reduced about 29.65% per year compared to the conventional power plants.

Abstract:This research presents a multicriteria approach for the best hybrid water supply solution of a multipurpose Pumped-Storage Hydropower (PSH) system, using the Generalized Reduced Gradient (GRG) method in Solver, with the optimization process considering key factors, such as Net Present Value (NPV), the number of energy conversion devices, renewable energy production, source availability, reservoir capacities, topographic constraints, and energy tariffs. The methodology combines a literature review, methodological development, and machine learning applications for hybrid water-energy systems. Results indicate that solar-only solutions are insufficient in high hydropower potential scenarios while integrating wind turbines significantly enhances energy production and profitability by generating surplus energy for grid sales. The timing of energy sales and the incorporation of battery storage also impact NPV, which can exceed 180 million euros. Wind energy contributes to continuous profitability and optimized system performance, particularly in isolated regions. The PSH system can manage 130,000 cubic meters of water daily, storing 25 MWh of energy, and reducing CO 2 emissions by over 18,000 tonnes per year. These findings highlight the importance of renewables, such as wind energy, and effective operational management. It enhances the economic viability and environmental sustainability of hybrid water-energy systems.
