Abstract:Aimed at the difficulty of obtaining the optimal solution and the problems of multiple solutions and instability existing in optimized calculation of monitoring points in correction of hydraulic mo-del of water distribution system,ant colony algorithm was used to obtain an optimal solution.Analysis shows a corresponding relation between nodal sensitivity and optimal monitoring location.Adding research data can enhance the calculation speed of ant colony algorithms,and therefore,the research data is associated with the sensitivity value.A comparison between the new combined method and conventional methods shows that the combined method can save the calculating time effectively under the same parameters condition.

Abstract:Delivering drinking water from water treatment plants (WTPs) to customer taps results in significant energy consumption and water loss due to leakage. The energy consumption involved in this process includes both the energy used in the water distribution networks (WDNs) and buildings. Existing research primarily focuses on optimizing energy consumption in WDNs while ignoring the energy consumption at buildings. Building height and water supply mode are crucial factors that impact energy consumption. A building hydraulic model involving various supply modes coupled with the WDN hydraulic model is developed to calculate the energy consumption and leakage from WTPs to taps. An optimization model is then proposed to minimize expenses by placing regional pump stations (RPSs) and scheduling pumps in WTPs. The application of the proposed method to a realistic WDN resulted in a 1.17% decrease in energy consumption and a 6.98% reduction in water leakage compared to traditional methods.

Abstract:The raw water supply was divided into abundant period and lacking period in many cities. Getting water from multi-resource and storing up the water in the reservoirs was a common method to ensure the enough freshwater in scanty state of cities,which also made the fetching and accumulating water complicated. The microcosmic math-model which including muti-resource of water and multi-reservoirs was Established and solved by genetic algorithms(GA),and least-cost of pumps and most stored water of reservoirs were took as the aim,then the optimal scheme and optimal stored process-line of reservoirs were obtained. The model was applied to raw water netwark of ZH city and a fairly good result was obtained.
Leakage Control And Energy Consumption Optimization In The Water Distribution Network Based On Joint Scheduling Of Pumps And Valves

Abstract:Apart from water quality, leakage control and energy consumption management are the most concerning challenges for water treatment plants (WTPs). The joint scheduling of pumps and pressure reducing valves (PRVs) in the water distribution network can reduce excessive pressure and distribute pressure more evenly, which achieves comprehensive reduction of leakages and energy consumption. Taking into account the main shortcomings of the commonly used methods, such as scheduling pumps or PRVs separately, or optimizing PRV settings when their position is given, etc., this paper has taken the PRV (position and setting) and the working status of variable speed pumps (VSPs) as decision variables and the cost savings contributed by leakage reduction and energy consumption savings as the objective function, which maximized the economic benefits brought by PRV and/or VSP scheduling. A genetic algorithm (GA) was used to optimize the solution under multiple working conditions. The performance of three control strategies (PRV-only scheduling, VSP-only scheduling, and joint scheduling of PRVs and VSPs) are compared to each other based on a small network. Joint scheduling has achieved the best economic benefits in reducing the gross cost (contributed by leakage and energy consumption) of the three control strategies, which results in a leakage reduction of 33.4%, an energy consumption reduction of 25.4%, and a total cost reduction of 33.1%, when compared to the original network, and saving about 1148 m(3) water (7% of the original consumption) and 722 kWh electric energy (25.4% of the original consumption) per day.

Abstract:A new methodology is developed for determining the optimal miniumcost design of water distribution systems. The components that can be sized are the pipe network, pumps or pump station, and tanks. In addition, the optimal settings for control and pressurereducing valves can be determined. This methodology couples nonlinear programming techniques with existing water distribution simulation models. Previous methodologies have typically simplified the system hydraulics to be able to solve the optimization problem. This new methodology retains the generality of the hydraulic simulation model so that the problem is only limited by the ability of the simulation model rather than the optimization model. The methodology uses a generalized reduced gradient model to solve a problem that is reduced in size and complexity by implicitly solving the conservation of mass and energy equations using the hydraulic simulator and an augmented Lagrangian approach to incorporate pressure head bounds in the objective function. Since the network equations are solved implicitly any number of demand patterns can be considered, including steady state loads, extended period simulations, or both.

Abstract:Multi-objective operation optimization of water distribution systems (WDSs) in large metropolitan areas is essential; however, it is complex and time-consuming. Effective and reliable scheduling of WDSs can significantly enhance the efficiency and reliability of urban water resources management, which requires further research. This paper develops an optimization method combining genetic algorithm and multiple criteria analysis that coordinates energy conservation, hydraulic condition improvement, and water age optimization in WDSs. Results showed that the optimal scheduling method could achieve a 23.0, 16.7, and 2.5% decrease in energy consumption, and water supply volume with unsatisfied pressure, and average water age, respectively. To achieve optimal results, this study indicated that it is crucial to properly allocate water supply volume and pressure across multiple drinking water treatment plants. This finding provides important guidance for water utilities in scheduling. Furthermore, the emergency scenario analysis shows that the newly proposed method can significantly enhance the social and economic sustainability of WDSs through the coordinated optimization of energy consumption, hydraulic conditions, and water age.

Abstract:Water resource modelling plays a crucial role in water resources management, but it involves many inherent uncertainties. This research investigates how epistemic uncertainties affect reservoir water budgets, projecting forward over a 30 year period using Monte Carlo simulation. It encompasses long-term variations in water demand, reservoir volume, precipitation, evaporation and inflow, while also considering siltation processes, reservoir dredging, population growth, reduced water consumption, and the hydrological impacts of climate change. The research focuses on fifty reservoirs in a semi-arid region of Brazil. The findings demonstrate that some reservoirs consistently met their demands with high level reliability, even within a wide range of uncertainty. Conversely, reservoirs with morphohydric indices indicating a tendency toward water scarcity are significantly affected by input variability introduced through uncertainty analysis. An empirical model is proposed to estimate the probability of these reservoirs achieving the reference volume reliability of 90%, while considering the uncertainties of: annual average inflow, reservoir maximum volume and annual demand. Sensitivity analysis reveals that reservoir inflow and demand are the two most influential variables affecting a reservoirs’ ability to meet its demand. For over exploited reservoirs, variations in these variables strongly impact the volume reliability. This research provides a valuable tool for estimating the likelihood of reaching a 90% volume reliability, while taking into account the inherent uncertainties in the modeling process. Additionally, it identifies key variables that have the most influence on the reservoirs’ ability to meet its demand. Notably, this study conducts uncertainty and sensitivity analyses in the context of physical and hydrological reservoir features for a large number of reservoirs, adding novelty to the research field.

Abstract:By subdividing the Water Distribution Networks (WDNs) into District Metered Areas (DMAs), it is possible to regulate pressures, reduce the time it takes to supply water to consumers, mitigate leaks and achieve a uniform distribution of demand. This process of DMAs creation is characterized by two stages: the partitioning of the system and the allocation of control devices. However, improving the management of supply networks is often only possible through the optimal allocation and operation of control devices in the pipelines. In this sense, this study proposes the implementation of different DMAs configurations with objective of costs, pressures, and water age minimization. For this work, hybrid algorithms are developed, consisting of the partitioning algorithms already established in the literature, Fast-Greedy and Louvain, and of the optimization algorithm Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO). The hybrid algorithms were implemented in the Python and Matlab programming languages. In this study, the Modena benchmark network has been used as a case study and the establishing DMAs have been made for single-objective optimizations. The results obtained are compared by analyzing hydraulic criteria, cost, modularity (connectivity) and frequency of valves allocated to the pipes. In general, the hybrid algorithms formed by Louvain algorithm obtained the best results.

Abstract:Water abstraction for the industrial, domestic, and agricultural sectors increased from 0.67 trillion m3/year in the 1900s to 3.79 trillion m3/year in 2000, and it is expected to increase by 55 % in 2050 when the majority of the world's population will live in urban areas. Concerning the industrial sector, despite the efforts to a more sustainable use, water is still an essential and irreplaceable resource, and this situation tends to increase due to modern industrial installations that require large-scale and complex water distribution systems. Usually, industries consume a large volume of water, however due to more and severer regulations, it is necessary to propose strategies for the aid of water conservation. This article presents a methodology to analyse, classify and optimize water consumption in industrial installations, using a real case study located in Vila Real, Portugal. The daily water consumption per worker, the daily record of use of each type of device and the hourly usage pattern were analysed and a classification was achieved according to the ANQIP (National Association for Quality in Building Installations) calculator. The case study revealed a great opportunity of improvement in what concerns to water efficient use. Some measures to improve the efficiency of water use in the building were pointed out, such as the use of rainwater harvesting systems, the use of aerators and replacements of taps and faucets when possible. The methodology is expeditious and user-friendly, and easy to replicate in similar cases, however it reveals some difficulties (especially in the data collection process that is made by inquiry, once it is always dependent on the respondent sensibility and willingness).

Abstract:Decision makers must keep in mind that water services have an invaluable ‘price’ for the public budget and society’s welfare. However, due to the specific features of the service, water utilities are prone to inefficiency. Thus, performance evaluation becomes indispensable to face this constraint. Besides the application of the traditional technique of Data Envelopment Analysis to evaluate the performance of Portuguese water utilities, this study also implements the robust technique of order-m to assess the influence of operational environment on water utilities’ performance. In spite of several reforms, the Portuguese water sector still reveals significant levels of inefficiency, partially caused by an inappropriate operating scale. Concerning the operational environment, it was possible to observe a positive influence of private sector participation, economies of scope, and groundwater sources on efficiency. The influence of the ‘quality of service provided’ was also studied in this performance analysis.

Abstract:Study region The largest 23 water utilities in Chile providing water and sanitation services to 97.9 % of total urban customers. Study focus This study introduces an innovative methodological framework based on inverse data envelopment analysis technique to quantify the additional operational costs required for water utilities to enhance their water supply and sanitation continuity while maintaining their techno-economic efficiency. This framework is pivotal for setting realistic continuity targets and assessing potential impacts on water and sanitation tariffs, thereby aiding in policy and operational planning within the water sector. New hydrological insights for the region The analysis was performed across four distinct continuity scenarios revealing substantial cost variability contingent on continuity targets, current service levels, and the efficiency of each utility. Results showed a median operational cost increase that varied from 28.41 % in the most stringent scenario to just 0.27 % in the most lenient. The financial implications of meeting these costs through water and sanitation tariffs would necessitate a median monthly increase in water bills, ranging from 0.01 per household in the more lenient scenarios. This research provides a valuable tool for water sector regulators and managers, enabling informed decision-making by balancing service improvement objectives with economic considerations and customer willingness to pay for enhanced service continuity.

Abstract:To deal with reliability of optimal design and operation of water-using systems,an operating window method and its procedure were proposed for sub-optimal designs and operations of water-using systems,in which inlet and outlet concentrations were considered noise factors,while sub-optimal targets of the water-using system were taken as control factors.The searching strategy of operating parameters for sub-optimal operations was also proposed.The operating parameters were obtained through mathematical programming.A case study was used to show the feasibility of the proposed method.It will provide theoretical fundamentals to analyze the sub-optimal design and operational reliability of water-using systems.

Abstract:In the energy production sector, increasing the quantity and efficiency of renewable energies, such as hydropower plants, is crucial to mitigate climate change. This paper proposes a new and flexible model for optimising operational decisions in watershed systems with interconnected dams. We propose a systematic representation of watersheds by a network of different connection points, which is the basis for an efficient Mixed-Integer Linear Programming model. The model is designed to be adaptable to different connections between dams in both main and tributary rivers. It supports decisions on power generation, pumping and water discharge, maximising profit, and considering realistic constraints on water use and factors such as future energy prices and weather conditions. A relax-and-fix heuristic is proposed to solve the model, along with two heuristic variants to accommodate different watershed structures and sizes. Methodological tests with simulated instances validate their performance, with both variants achieving results within 1% of the optimal solution faster than the model for the tested instances. To evaluate the performance of the approaches in a real-world scenario, we analyse the case study of the Cávado watershed (Portugal), providing relevant insights for managing dam operations. The model generally follows the actual decisions made in typical situations and flood scenarios. However, in the case of droughts, it tends to be more conservative, saving water unless necessary or profitable. The model can be used in a decision-support system to provide decision-makers with an integrated view of the entire watershed and optimised solutions to the operational problem at hand.

Abstract:The minimization of discounted value of annual costs for a water distribution system has been the primary objective of water distribution system's optimization under some constrains.Through the comparison between the optimization models and engineering practice,some over-simplifications of model precondition and optimization objectives were found.The main problems were: one-sided pursuit of the optimal solution under certain given conditions due to the neglect of parameter uncertainty;insufficient consideration of the diversified design objectives and over-emphasis on costs minimization;design with little consideration of the ageing and renewal of water distribution system in the whole life cycle;ignore the constraints of current water distribution system in renovation and expansion.Moreover,the problem of how to understand the optimization in a new point of view was investigated.The multiple definitions of costs and benefits were analyzed.The diversified measurements of reliability were introduced.The main economic indicator that water supply utilities pursue is the maximization of net benefit rather than the minimization of cost.
Internal and Total Site Water Network Design with Water Mains Using Pinch-Based and Optimization Approaches

Abstract:This work addresses the internal and Total Site Water Network design with water mains. A Material Recovery Pinch Diagram is used for freshwater targeting and a Water Integration Network design with a water main framework, and a mathematical model is formulated for total cost optimization. The Pinch-based method can target an optimum number of water mains, flow rates, and concentrations in the water mains, which can achieve the identified freshwater target. The proposed method can be used for both single and multiple contaminants and applied on both process and total site scales. Two case studies are used to illustrate the application procedure of the proposed method for single- and multiple-contaminant cases. The case study results showed that the optimum number of water mains is three in both single-contaminant and multiple-contaminant Total Site Water Network designs (excluding freshwater and wastewater mains). In the single-contaminant case, the water network of internal integration with three water mains can achieve a total annual cost reduction of 82% compared to direct Water Integration and a total annual cost of 42% in the multiple-contaminant case. The proposed method is beneficial as it provides a graphical interface for the water main targeting and design, and the mathematical optimization enables the selection of optimum options with a minimum cost.
