Abstract:We extend the work of Bielefeld, Fisher and Hubbard on Critical Portraits to the case of arbitrary postcritically finite polynomials. This determines an effective classification of postcritically finite polynomials as dynamical systems. This paper is the first in a series of two based on the author's thesis, which deals with the classification of postcritically finite polynomials. In this first part we conclude the study of critical portraits initiated by Fisher and continued by Bielefeld, Fisher and Hubbard.

Abstract:Let $F$ be a number field. Given a quadratic polynomial $f_c(z) = z^2 + c \in F[z]$, we can construct a directed graph $Preper(f_c, F)$ (also called a portrait), whose vertices are $F$-rational preperiodic points for $f_c$, with an edge $\alpha \to \beta$ if and only if $f_c(\alpha) = \beta$. Poonen and Faber classified the portraits that occur for infinitely many $c$'s. Given a portrait $P$, we prove an asymptotic formula for counting the number of $c \in F$'s by height, such that $Preper(f_c, F) \cong P$. We also prove an asymptotic formula for the analogous counting problem, where $Preper(f_c, K) \cong P$ for some quadratic extension $K/F$. These results are conditioned on Morton-Silverman conjecture.

Abstract:We continue the work of [10], studying properties of digital images determined by fixed point invariants. We introduce pointed versions of invariants that were introduced in [10]. We introduce freezing sets and cold sets to show how the existence of a fixed point set for a continuous self-map restricts the map on the complement of the fixed point set.

Abstract:We bound the number of fixed points of an automorphism of a real curve in terms of the genus and the number of connected components of the real part of the curve. Using this bound, we derive some consequences concerning the maximum order of an automorphism and the maximum order of an abelian group of automorphisms of a real curve. We also bound the full group of automorphisms of a real hyperelliptic curve.

Abstract:In this note, we show that the main result (Theorem 2.6) due to Górnicki (J Fixed Point Theory Appl 21:29, 2019. 10.1007/s11784-019-0668-0) is still valid if we replace the assumption of continuity of the mapping by some weaker versions of continuity conditions. As a by-product, we provide few more new answers to the open question of Rhoades (Contemp Math 72:233–245, 1988).

Abstract:Applying a classical theorem of Smith, we show that the poset property of being Gorenstein* over Z2 is inherited by the subposet of fixed points under an involutive poset automorphism. As an application, we prove that every interval in the Bruhat order on (twisted) involutions in an arbitrary Coxeter group has this property, and we find the rank function. This implies results conjectured by F. Incitti. We also show that the Bruhat order on the fixed points of an involutive automorphism induced by a Coxeter graph automorphism is isomorphic to the Bruhat order on the fixed subgroup viewed as a Coxeter group in its own right.

Abstract:We give a direct proof of Schauder's fixed point theorem in the setting of geodesic metric spaces, generalizing the classical Schauder's theorem and improving a recent version of this theorem in CAT(κ) spaces. Abstract:In this paper, a generalization of fixed-point mappings with an iterate at a point in complete metric spaces is shown, using the notions of T-closed sets and i-P-regularity/d-P-regularity, proving conditions for the existence and uniqueness of the fixed point. Examples are provided to illustrate the results and an application to coupled fixed points is shown.

Abstract:We show that any sequence of integers satisfying necessary Dold's congruences is realized as the sequence of fixed point indices of the iterates of an orientation-reversing homeomorphism of $\mathbb{R}^{m}$ for $m\geq 3$. As an element of the construction of the above homeomorphism, we consider the class of boundary-preserving homeomorphisms of $\mathbb{R}^{m}_{+}$ and give the answer to [Problem 10.2, Topol. Methods Nonlinear Anal. 50 (2017), 643 - 667] providing a complete description of the forms of fixed point indices for this class of maps.

Abstract:Associated to any unit interval graph, Syu Kato introduced a variety which gives (via the geometric Satake correspondence) a graded $GL_m$ representation whose character is the chromatic quasisymmetric polynomial of the graph. Abstract:We describe a flexible construction that produces triples of finitely generated, residually finite groups $M\hookrightarrow P \hookrightarrow \Gamma$, where the maps induce isomorphisms of profinite completions $\widehat{M}\cong\widehat{P}\cong\widehat{\Gamma}$, but $M$ and $\Gamma$ have Serre's property FA while $P$ does not. In this construction, $P$ is finitely presented and $\Gamma$ is of type ${\rm{F}}_\infty$. More generally, given any positive integer $d$, one can demand that $M$ and $\Gamma$ have a fixed point whenever they act by semisimple isometries on a complete CAT$(0)$ space of dimension at most $d$, while $P$ acts without a fixed point on a tree.

A Lefschetz fixed-point formula for noncompact fixed-point sets

Abstract:We obtain an equivariant index theorem, or Lefschetz fixed-point formula, for isometries from complete Riemannian manifolds to themselves. The fixed-point set of such an isometry may be noncompact. We build on techniques developed by Roe. Key new ingredients are a localised functional on operators with bounded smooth kernels, and an algebra (reminiscent of Yu's localisation algebra) of `asymptotically local' operators, on which this functional has an asymptotic trace property. As consequences, we show that some earlier indices used are special cases of the one we introduce here, and obtain an obstruction to positive scalar curvature.

Abstract:The PPF dependent fixed point result in algebraically closed Razumikhin classes due to Agarwal et al [Fixed Point Theory Appl., 2013, 2013:280] is identical with its constant class counterpart; and this, in turn, is reducible to a fixed point principle involving SVV type contractions (over the subsequent metric space of initial Banach structure), without any regularity conditions about the Razumikhin classes. The conclusion remains valid for all PPF dependent fixed point results founded on such global conditions.

Abstract:We extend the definition of an orbit portrait to the context of non-autonomous iteration, both for the combinatorial version involving collections of angles and for the dynamic version involving external rays where combinatorial portraits can be realized by the dynamics associated with sequences of polynomials with suitably uniformly bounded degrees and coefficients. We show that, in the case of sequences of polynomials of constant degree, the portraits which arise are eventually periodic which is somewhat similar to the classical theory of polynomial iteration. However, if the degrees of the polynomials in the sequence are allowed to vary, one can obtain portraits with complementary arcs of irrational length which are fundamentally different from the classical ones.

Abstract:A general fixed point theorem for isometries in terms of metric functionals is proved under the assumption of the existence of a conical bicombing. It is new for isometries of convex sets of Banach spaces as well as for non-locally compact CAT(0)-spaces and injective spaces. Examples of actions on non-proper CAT(0)-spaces come from the study of diffeomorphism groups, birational transformations, and compact Kähler manifolds. A special case of the fixed point theorem provides a novel mean ergodic theorem that in the Hilbert space case implies von Neumann's theorem. The theorem accommodates classically fixed-point-free isometric maps such as those of Kakutani, Edelstein, Alspach and Prus. Moreover, from the main theorem together with some geometric arguments of independent interest, one can deduce that every bounded invertible operator of a Hilbert space admits a nontrivial invariant metric functional on the space of positive operators. This is a result in the direction of the invariant subspace problem although its full meaning is dependent on a future determination of such metric functionals.

Abstract:We formulate and prove a non-abelian analog of Deligne's Fixed Part theorem on Hodge classes, revisiting previous work of Jost--Zuo, Katzarkov--Pantev and Landesman--Litt. To this aim we study algebraically isomonodromic extensions of local systems and we relate them to variations of Hodge structures, for example we show that the Mumford-Tate group at a generic point stays constant in an algebraically isomonodromic extension of a variation of Hodge structure. v2: a few typos ironed and Thm 1.1 5) completed. v3: there was a Schlamassel leading to a mix-up of files.
