Abstract:We describe the S*-action on the Quot-scheme Quot (8”) associated to the trivial bundle &"= CP x C". In particlular, the topology of the S*-fixed-point components in Quot (8”) and the S*-weights of the normal bundle of these components are worked out. Mirror Principle, as developed by three of the current authors in the series of work [LL-Y1, I, II, III, IV], is a method for studying certain intersection numbers on a stable map moduli space. As an application, in Mirror Principle III, Sec 5.4, an outline was given in the case of genus zero with target a flag manifold. The results on S'fixed points in this paper are used here to do explicit Mir-ror Principle computations in the case of Grassmannian manifolds. In fact, Mirror Principle computations involve only a certain distinguished subcol-lection of the S*-fixed-point components. These components are identified and are labelled by Young tableaus. The S*-equivariant Euler class es1 of the normal bundle to these components is computed. A diagrammatic rule that allows one to write down es1 directly from the Young tableau is given. From this, the aforementioned intersection numbers on the moduli space of stable maps can be worked out. Two examples are given to illustrate our method. Using the method, the A-model for Calabi-Yau complete intersections in a Grassmannian manifold can now also be computed explicitly. This work is motivated by the intention to provide further details of mirror principle and to understand the relation of mirror principle to physical theory. Some related questions are listed for further study.

Abstract:Comparing fixed points of different mappings is often required when doing economic analysis. I present here some results on the comparison of fixed points of different mappings that generalize and have as a particular case the supermodularity results on the same topic. The main result is that if we take a certain order ,⩾ for which the mappings are increasing and ordered, then the fixed points of the different mappings are also ordered in that same order: every fixed point of a lower (higher) mapping has at least one higher (lower) fixed point in a higher (lower) mapping. These results allow us, for example, to make comparisons among equilibria of Cournot games with any number of firms, which were not possible under the supermodularity results.Journal of Economic LiteratureClassification Numbers: C62, C70, L13.

Abstract:We present a general fixed point theorem which can be seen as the quintessence of the principles of proof for Banach's Fixed Point Theorem, ultrametric and certain topological fixed point theorems. It works in a minimal setting, not involving any metrics. We demonstrate its applications to the metric, ultrametric and topological cases, and to ordered abelian groups and fields.

Abstract:In a series of previous papers, we initiated a systematic study of semihypergroups and had a thorough discussion on certain analytic and algebraic aspects associated to this class of objects. In particular, we introduced the notion of semihypergroup actions on a general topological space and discussed different continuity, equivalence and natural fixed point properties of the same in [6]. Now in this article, we consider different kinds of representations of a semihypergroup on compact convex subsets of a locally convex space and explore equivalence relations between certain fixed-point properties of such representations and amenability of the space of almost periodic functions. Finally, we investigate how far these equivalence relations can be strengthened when in particular, we consider representations on the dual of a Banach space.

Abstract:We show that if X is a complete metric space with uniform relative normal structure and G is a subgroup of the isometry group of X with bounded orbits, then there is a point in X fixed by every isometry in G . As a corollary, we obtain a theorem of U. Lang (2013) concerning injective metric spaces. A few applications of this theorem are given to the problems of inner derivations. In particular, we show that if L 1 ‚ĀĘ ( őľ ) is an essential Banach L 1 ‚ĀĘ ( G ) -bimodule, then any continuous derivation őī : L 1 ‚ĀĘ ( G ) ‚Üí L ‚ąě ‚ĀĘ ( őľ ) is inner. This extends a theorem of B.‚ÄČE. Johnson (1991) asserting that the convolution algebra L 1 ‚ĀĘ ( G ) is weakly amenable if G is a locally compact group.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce the concept of generalized saddle points for a function defined on a product of topological spaces. The generalized saddle points are defined as minima of a special function, that is the supremum of Nikaido-Isoda function. We prove elementary properties of the generalized saddle points and study their dependence on a parameter. We show that under natural assumptions if a function has the only generalized saddle point, then this point is stable. Moreover, for functions defined over a sets of solutions to nonlinear equations with a parameter in finite-dimensional spaces, we provide sufficient conditions of the generalized saddle point stability in terms of λ -truncations.

Abstract:We show that the existence of rational points on smooth varieties over a field can be detected using homotopy fixed points of etale topological types under the Galois action. As our main example we show that the surjectivity statement in Grothendieck's Section Conjecture would follow from the surjectivity of the map from fixed points to continuous homotopy fixed points on the level of connected components. Along the way we define a new model for the continuous etale homotopy fixed point space of a smooth variety over a field under the Galois action.

Topological Methods in Nonlinear Analysis

Abstract:Let be a bounded, closed and convex subset of a reflexive metric space with a digraph such that -intervals along walks are closed and convex. In the main theorem we show that if is a monotone -nonexpansive mapping and there exists such that , then has a fixed point provided for each , has the fixed point property for nonexpansive mappings. In particular, it gives an essential generalization of the Dehaish-Khamsi theorem concerning partial orders in complete uniformly convex hyperbolic metric spaces. Some counterparts of this result for modular spaces, and for commutative families of mappings are given too.

Extremal fixed points and Diophantine equations

Abstract:The coupling constants of fixed points in the $\epsilon$ expansion at one loop are known to satisfy a quadratic bound due to Rychkov and Stergiou. We refer to fixed points that saturate this bound as extremal fixed points. The theories which contain such fixed points are those which undergo a saddle-node bifurcation, entailing the presence of a marginal operator. Among bifundamental theories, a few examples of infinite families of such theories are known. A necessary condition for extremality is that the sizes of the factors of the symmetry group of a given theory satisfy a specific Diophantine equation, given in terms of what we call the extremality polynomial. In this work we study such Diophantine equations and employ a combination of rigorous and probabilistic estimates to argue that these infinite families constitute rare exceptions. The Pell equation, Falting's theorem, Siegel's theorem, and elliptic curves figure prominently in our analysis. In the cases we study here, more generic classes of multi-fundamental theories saturate the Rychkov-Stergiou bound only in sporadic cases or in limits where they degenerate into simpler known examples.

Abstract:Existence and regularity of the minima of a functional have been studied extensively in the calculus of variations. It is our purpose here to present an analogy for saddle points. We shall prove two existence theorems for saddle points for certain functionals. The first is based on the Von Neumann-Sion-Ky Fan theorem [1], and the second is an application of a local minimax theorem due to S.Z. Shi and the author [5].

Abstract:Local indices at isolated fixed points of a differentiable compact nonlinear map $T$ on Banach spaces will be discussed. These results are applied to establish the existence of nontrivial solutions. As an example, the existence of nontrivial weak solutions to a class of nonlinear strongly coupled elliptic systems of two equations will also be studied. A bifurcation phenomenon due to cross-diffusion is reported.

Abstract:Completely positive trace-preserving maps $S$, also known as quantum channels, arise in quantum physics as a description of how the density operator $\rho$ of a system changes in a given time interval, allowing not only for unitary evolution but arbitrary operations including measurements or other interaction with an environment. It is known that if the Hilbert space $\mathscr{H}$ that $\rho$ acts on is finite-dimensional, then every $S$ must have a fixed point, i.e., a density operator $\rho_0$ with $S(\rho_0)=\rho_0$. In infinite dimension, $S$ need not have a fixed point in general. However, we prove here the existence of a fixed point under a certain additional assumption which is, roughly speaking, that $S$ leaves invariant a certain set of density operators with bounded ``cost'' of preparation. The proof is an application of the Schauder-Tychonoff fixed point theorem. Our motivation for this question comes from a proposal of Deutsch for how to define quantum theory in a space-time with closed timelike curves; our result supports the viability of Deutsch's proposal.
