Abstract:We discuss the use of histories labelled by a continuous time in the approach to consistent-histories quantum theory in which propositions about the history of the system are represented by projection operators on a Hilbert space. This extends earlier work by two of us \cite{IL95} where we showed how a continuous time parameter leads to a history algebra that is isomorphic to the canonical algebra of a quantum field theory. We describe how the appropriate representation of the history algebra may be chosen by requiring the existence of projection operators that represent propositions about time average of the energy. We also show that the history description of quantum mechanics contains an operator corresponding to velocity that is quite distinct from the momentum operator. Finally, the discussion is extended to give a preliminary account of quantum field theory in this approach to the consistent histories formalism.

Abstract:We discuss the case of histories labelled by a continuous time parameter in the {\em History Projection Operator} consistent-histories quantum theory. We describe how the appropriate representation of the history algebra may be chosen by requiring the existence of projection operators that represent propositions about time averages of the energy. We define the action operator for the consistent histories formalism, as the quantum analogue of the classical action functional, for the simple harmonic oscillator case. We show that the action operator is the generator of two types of time transformations that may be related to the two laws of time-evolution of the standard quantum theory: the `state-vector reduction' and the unitary time-evolution. We construct the corresponding classical histories and demonstrate the relevance with the quantum histories; we demonstrate how the requirement of the temporal logic structure of the theory is sufficient for the definition of classical histories. Furthermore, we show the relation of the action operator to the decoherence functional which describes the dynamics of the system. Finally, the discussion is extended to give a preliminary account of quantum field theory in this approach to the consistent histories formalism.

Abstract:Decoherence in nearly-isolated GaAs quantum dots is investigated using the change in average Coulomb blockade peak height upon breaking time-reversal symmetry. The normalized change in average peak height approaches the predicted universal value of 1/4 at temperatures well below the single-particle level spacing, but is greatly suppressed for temperature greater than the level spacing, suggesting that inelastic scattering or other dephasing mechanisms dominate in this regime.

Abstract:For a quantum field living on a nonstatic space–time no instantaneous Hamiltonian is definable, for this generically necessitates a choice of inequivalent representation of the canonical commutation relations at each instant of time. This fact suggests a description in terms of time-dependent Hilbert spaces, a concept that fits naturally in a (consistent) histories framework. Our primary tool for the construction of the quantum theory in a continuous-time histories format is the recently developed formalism based on the notion of the history group. This we employ to study a model system involving a 1+1 scalar field in a cavity with moving boundaries. The instantaneous (smeared) Hamiltonian and a decoherence functional are then rigorously defined so that finite values for the time-averaged particle creation rate are obtainable through the study of energy histories. We also construct the Schwinger–Keldysh closed-time-path generating functional as a “Fourier transform” of the decoherence functional and evaluate the corresponding n-point functions.

Abstract:This paper reviews the histories approach to quantum mechanics. This discussion is then applied to theories of quantum gravity. It is argued that the results of all measurements in suitably defined classical situations can be identified with properties of the histories. This observation has significance for the formulation of new theories (such as quantum gravity theories) as it puts a constraint on the kinematics, if the quantum/classical correspondence principle is to be preserved. Consequences for quantum gravity, particularly for Lorentz symmetry and the idea of emergent geometry, are discussed.

Abstract:We analyse and develop the recent suggestion that a temporal form of quantum logic provides the natural mathematical framework within which to discuss the proposal by Gell-Mann and Hartle for a generalised form of quantum theory based on the ideas of histories and decoherence functionals. Particular stress is placed on properties of the space of decoherence functionals, including one way in which certain global and topological properties of a classical system are reflected in a quantum history theory.

Abstract:The Consistent Histories (CH) formalism aims at a quantum mechanical framework which could be applied even to the universe as a whole. CH stresses the importance of histories for quantum mechanics, as opposed to measurements, and maintains that a satisfactory formulation of quantum mechanics allows one to assign probabilities to alternative histories of a quantum system. It further proposes that each realm, that is, each set of histories to which probabilities can be assigned, provides a valid quantum-mechanical account, but that different realms can be mutually incompatible. Finally, some of its proponents offer an "evolutionary" explanation of our existence in the universe and of our preference for quasiclassical descriptions of nature. The present work questions the validity of claims offered by CH proponents asserting that it solves many interpretational problems in quantum mechanics. In particular, we point out that the interpretation of the framework leaves vague two crucial points, namely, whether realms are fixed or chosen and the link between measurements and histories. Our claim is that by doing so, CH overlooks the main interpretational problems of quantum mechanics. Furthermore, we challenge the evolutionary explanation offered and we critically examine the proposed notion of a realm-dependent reality.

Abstract:Classical mechanics and standard Copenhagen quantum mechanics respect subspace implications. For example, if a particle is confined in a particular region $R$ of space, then in these theories we can deduce that it is confined in regions containing $R$. However, subspace implications are generally violated by versions of quantum theory that assign probabilities to histories, such as the consistent histories approach. I define here a new criterion, ordered consistency, which refines the criterion of consistency and has the property that inferences made by ordered consistent sets do not violate subspace relations. This raises the question: do the operators defining our observations form an ordered consistent history? If so, ordered consistency defines a version of quantum theory with greater predictive power than the consistent histories formalism. If not, and our observations are defined by a non-ordered consistent quantum history, then subspace implications are not generally valid.

Abstract:It will be presented in this chapter a historical account of the consistent histories interpretation of quantum mechanics based on primary and secondary literature. Firstly, the formalism of the consistent histories approach will be outlined. Secondly, the works by Robert Griffiths and Roland Omnès will be discussed. Griffiths' seminal 1984 paper, the first physicist to have proposed a consistent-histories interpretation of quantum mechanics, followed by Omnès' 1990 paper, were instrumental to the consistent-histories model based on Boolean logic. Thirdly, Murray Gell-Mann and James Hartle's steps to their own version of consistent-histories approach, motivated by a cosmological perspective, will then be described and evaluated. Gell-Mann and Hartle understood that spontaneous decoherence could path the way to a concrete physical model to Griffiths' consistent histories. Moreover, the collective biography of these figures will be put in the context of the role played by the Santa Fe Institute, co-founded by Gell-Mann in 1984 in Santa Fe, New Mexico, where Hartle is also a member of the external faculty.

Abstract:The formalism for histories-based generalized quantum mechanics developed in two earlier papers is applied to the treatment of histories (of particles or fields or more general objects) in curved spacetimes (which need not admit foliation in spacelike hypersurfaces). The construction of the space of temporal supports (a partial semigroup generalizing the space of finite time sequences employed in traditional temporal description of histories) employs spacelike subsets of spacetime having dimensionality less than or equal to three. Definition of symmetry is sharpened by the requirement of continuity of mappings (employing topological partial semigroups). It is shown that with this proviso, a symmetry in our formalism implies a conformal isometry of the spacetime metric.

Abstract:A formulation of the consistent histories approach to quantum mechanics in terms of generalized observables (POV measures) and effect operators is provided. The usual notion of `history' is generalized to the notion of `effect history'. The space of effect histories carries the structure of a D-poset. Recent results of J.D. Maitland Wright imply that every decoherence functional defined for ordinary histories can be uniquely extended to a bi-additive decoherence functional on the space of effect histories. Omnes' logical interpretation is generalized to the present context. The result of this work considerably generalizes and simplifies the earlier formulation of the consistent effect histories approach to quantum mechanics communicated in a previous work of this author.

Abstract:We develop a new algorithm for the quantisation of systems with first-class constraints. Our approach lies within the (History Projection Operator) continuous-time histories quantisation programme. In particular, the Hamiltonian treatment (either classical or quantum) of parameterised systems is characterised by the loss of the notion of time in the space of true degrees of freedom (i.e. the `problem of time'). The novel temporal structure of the HPO theory (two laws of time transformation that distinguish between the temporal logical structure and the dynamics) persists after the imposition of the constraints, hence the problem of time does not arise. We expound the algorithm for both the classical and quantum cases and apply it to simple models.

Abstract:We consider two technical developments of the formalism of continuous-time histories. First, we provide an explicit description of histories of the simple harmonic oscillator on the classical histories phase space, comparing and contrasting the Q, P and Wigner representations; we conclude that a representation based on coherent states is the most appropriate. Second, we demonstrate a generic method for implementing a perturbative approach for interacting theories in the histories formalism, using the quartic anharmonic oscillator. We make use of the identification of the closed-time path (CTP) generating functional with the decoherence functional to develop a perturbative expansion for the latter up to second order in the coupling constant. We consider both configuration space and phase space histories.

Abstract:In the consistent histories formalism one specifies a family of histories as an exhaustive set of pairwise exclusive descriptions of the dynamics of a quantum system. We define branching families of histories, which strike a middle ground between the two available mathematically precise definitions of families of histories, viz., product families and Isham's history projector operator formalism. The former are too narrow for applications, and the latter's generality comes at a certain cost, barring an intuitive reading of the ``histories''. Branching families retain the intuitiveness of product families, they allow for the interpretation of a history's weight as a probability, and they allow one to distinguish two kinds of coarse-graining, leading to reconsidering the motivation for the consistency condition.

Abstract:Decoherent histories quantum theory is reformulated with the assumption that there is one "real" fine-grained history, specified in a preferred complete set of sum-over-histories variables. This real history is described by embedding it in an ensemble of comparable imagined fine-grained histories, not unlike the familiar ensemble of statistical mechanics. These histories are assigned extended probabilities, which can sometimes be negative or greater than one. As we will show, this construction implies that the real history is not completely accessible to experimental or other observational discovery. However, sufficiently and appropriately coarse-grained sets of alternative histories have standard probabilities providing information about the real fine-grained history that can be compared with observation. We recover the probabilities of decoherent histories quantum mechanics for sets of histories that are recorded and therefore decohere. Quantum mechanics can be viewed as a classical stochastic theory of histories with extended probabilities and a well-defined notion of reality common to all decoherent sets of alternative coarse-grained histories.

Abstract:In the consistent histories (CH) approach to quantum theory probabilities are assigned to histories subject to a consistency condition of negligible interference. The approach has the feature that a given physical situation admits multiple sets of consistent histories that cannot in general be united into a single consistent set, leading to a number of counter-intuitive or contrary properties if propositions from different consistent sets are combined indiscriminately. An alternative viewpoint is proposed in which multiple consistent sets are classified according to whether or not there exists any unifying probability for combinations of incompatible sets which replicates the consistent histories result when restricted to a single consistent set. A number of examples are exhibited in which this classification can be made, in some cases with the assistance of the Bell, CHSH or Leggett-Garg inequalities together with Fine's theorem. When a unifying probability exists logical deductions in different consistent sets can in fact be combined, an extension of the "single framework rule". It is argued that this classification coincides with intuitive notions of the boundary between classical and quantum regimes and in particular, the absence of a unifying probability for certain combinations of consistent sets is regarded as a measure of the "quantumness" of the system. The proposed approach and results are closely related to recent work on the classification of quasi-probabilities and this connection is discussed.

The Geometry of Consistency: Decohering Histories in Generalized Quantum Theory

Abstract:The geometry of decoherence in generalized "consistent histories" quantum theory is explored, revealing properties of the theory that are independent of any particular application of it. It is shown how the decoherence functional of a closed quantum system may be regarded as an Hermitian form on the space of linear operators on the Hilbert space of the system. This identification makes manifest a number of structural properties of decoherence functionals. For example, a bound on the maximum number of histories in a consistent set is determined. When the decoherence functional is positive -- as in conventional quantum mechanics -- it defines a semi-inner product on the space of history operators. This shows that consistent sets of histories are just orthogonal sets in this inner product. It further implies the existence in general of Cauchy-Schwarz and triangle inequalities for positive decoherence functionals. The geometrical significance of the ILS theorem classifying all possible decoherence functionals is illuminated, and a version of the ILS theorem for decoherence functionals on class operators is given. The class of history operators consistent according to a given decoherence functional is found, and, conversely, it is shown how to construct the decoherence functionals according to which a given set of histories is consistent. More generally, the "geometric" point of view here developed supplies a powerful unified language with which to solve problems in generalized quantum theory.

Contrary Inferences for Classical Histories within the Consistent Histories Formulation of Quantum Theory

Abstract:In the histories formulation of quantum theory, sets of coarse-grained histories, that are called consistent, obey classical probability rules. It has been argued that these sets can describe the semi-classical behaviour of closed quantum systems. Most physical scenarios admit multiple different consistent sets and one can view each consistent set as a separate context. Using propositions from different consistent sets to make inferences leads to paradoxes such as the contrary inferences first noted by Kent [Physical Review Letters, 78(15):2874, 1997]. Proponents of the consistent histories formulation argue that one should not mix propositions coming from different consistent sets in making logical arguments, and that paradoxes such as the aforementioned contrary inferences are nothing else than the usual microscopic paradoxes of quantum contextuality as first demonstrated by Kochen and Specker theorem. In this contribution we use the consistent histories to describe a macroscopic (semi-classical) system to show that paradoxes involving contextuality (mixing different consistent sets) persist even in the semi-classical limit. This is distinctively different from the contextuality of standard quantum theory, where the contextuality paradoxes do not persist in the semi-classical limit. Specifically, we consider different consistent sets for the arrival time of a semi-classical wave packet in an infinite square well. Surprisingly, we get consistent sets that disagree on whether the motion of the semi-classical system, that started within a subregion, ever left that subregion or not. Our results point to the need for constraints, additional to the consistency condition, to recover the correct semi-classical limit in this formalism and lead to the motto `all consistent sets are equal', but `some consistent sets are more equal than others'.
