Decoherent Histories Quantum Mechanics with One 'Real' Fine-Grained History

Abstract:Decoherent histories quantum theory is reformulated with the assumption that there is one "real" fine-grained history, specified in a preferred complete set of sum-over-histories variables. This real history is described by embedding it in an ensemble of comparable imagined fine-grained histories, not unlike the familiar ensemble of statistical mechanics. These histories are assigned extended probabilities, which can sometimes be negative or greater than one. As we will show, this construction implies that the real history is not completely accessible to experimental or other observational discovery. However, sufficiently and appropriately coarse-grained sets of alternative histories have standard probabilities providing information about the real fine-grained history that can be compared with observation. We recover the probabilities of decoherent histories quantum mechanics for sets of histories that are recorded and therefore decohere. Quantum mechanics can be viewed as a classical stochastic theory of histories with extended probabilities and a well-defined notion of reality common to all decoherent sets of alternative coarse-grained histories.

Abstract:General history quantum theories are quantum theories without a globally defined notion of time. Decoherence functionals represent the states in the history approach and are defined as certain bivariate complex-valued functionals on the space of all histories. However, in practical situations -- for instance in the history formulation of standard quantum mechanics -- there often is a global time direction and the homogeneous decoherence functionals are specified by their values on the subspace of homogeneous histories. In this work we study the analytic properties of (i) the standard decoherence functional in the history version of standard quantum mechanics and (ii) homogeneous decoherence functionals in general history theories. We restrict ourselves to the situation where the space of histories is given by the lattice of projections on some Hilbert space H. Among other things we prove the non-existence of a finitely valued extension for the standard decoherence functional to the space of all histories, derive a representation for the standard decoherence functional as an unbounded quadratic form with a natural representation on a Hilbert space and prove the existence of an Isham-Linden-Schreckenberg (ILS) type representation for the standard decoherence functional.

Abstract:This Journal was founded as the British J7urnal ofSocial Medicine in 1947. It became the British J7urnal of Preventive and Social Medicine in 1953, and took on its current title, the Journal ofEpidemiology and Community Health, in 1978. The founding of the Journal reflected the growing interest in social medicine seen during the middle decades of this century. The failure to sustain this enthusiasm beyond its initial peak might be viewed as either indicative of a lack of substance in the discipline, or of its strategic incorporation within a broader view of the public health function. A re-examination of this could be helpful at a time when there is the potential to renew interest in the social origins and social prophylaxis of illness. While George Rosen' and Dorothy Porter2, among others, have discussed the ideas of the pioneers of social medicine, little attention has been paid to the actual content of their early work. This paper looks back at the vision of the early practitioners of social medicine in this country, and contrasts the ideas with the practice as evidenced by the papers appearing in this Journal in its first five years. The reasons for the subsequent fall from favour of the term social medicine are discussed and finally the content of some of the Journal's recent papers is considered.

Abstract:This paper discusses the relation between the decoherent histories approach to quantum mechanics that is based on coarse-grained decoherent histories of a closed system, and the approximate quantum mechanics of measured subsystems, as in the Copenhagen interpretation. We show how the a classical world used in such formulations is not to something to be postulated but rather explained by suitable sets of alternative histories of quasiclassical variables. We discuss the general definition of measurement, the collapse of the wave function, and irreversibility from the perspective of decoherent histories quantum theory..

Abstract:This paper reviews the histories approach to quantum mechanics. This discussion is then applied to theories of quantum gravity. It is argued that the results of all measurements in suitably defined classical situations can be identified with properties of the histories. This observation has significance for the formulation of new theories (such as quantum gravity theories) as it puts a constraint on the kinematics, if the quantum/classical correspondence principle is to be preserved. Consequences for quantum gravity, particularly for Lorentz symmetry and the idea of emergent geometry, are discussed.

Abstract:To evaluate whether increased airway reactivity affected the course of patients with cystic fibrosis (CF), we categorized 40 CF patients as to methacholine sensitivity and then evaluated their disease activity and natural history. Twenty methacholine reactors had more severe lung disease (lower S-K clinical scores and more impairment of pulmonary function) than did 16 nonreactive patients, and acute bronchodilator response was greater in the methacholine reactors. Thirty-four patients were followed prospectively over a 17- to 24-month period. Among 19 methacholine reactors, there were more pulmonary exacerbations and a more rapid decline in FEV1. In general, increased obstruction was associated with increased reactivity. Although the data are subject to differing interpretations, they are consistent with the hypothesis that in patients with CF, airway hyperreactivity occurs secondary to bronchial damage, age, is associated with more rapid pulmonary deterioration, and is an unfavorable prognostic finding.

Abstract:We continue our efforts to understand, within the framework of the quantum mechanics of the universe as a whole, the quasiclassical realm of familiar experience as a feature emergent from the Hamiltonian of the elementary particles and the initial condition of the universe. Quantum mechanics assigns probabilities to exhaustive sets of alternative decoherent histories of the universe. We introduce and define the notion of strong decoherence. We replace the notion of maximal sets of alternative decohering histories by defining the more useful concept of "full" sets of alternative strongly decohering histories. These full sets fall into equivalence classes each of which is characterized by a basis in Hilbert space. Finally we describe our continuing efforts to find measures of classicality --- measures that could be applied to such full sets of alternative strongly decohering so as to characterize a quasiclassical realm.

Abstract:For a quantum field living on a nonstatic space–time no instantaneous Hamiltonian is definable, for this generically necessitates a choice of inequivalent representation of the canonical commutation relations at each instant of time. This fact suggests a description in terms of time-dependent Hilbert spaces, a concept that fits naturally in a (consistent) histories framework. Our primary tool for the construction of the quantum theory in a continuous-time histories format is the recently developed formalism based on the notion of the history group. This we employ to study a model system involving a 1+1 scalar field in a cavity with moving boundaries. The instantaneous (smeared) Hamiltonian and a decoherence functional are then rigorously defined so that finite values for the time-averaged particle creation rate are obtainable through the study of energy histories. We also construct the Schwinger–Keldysh closed-time-path generating functional as a “Fourier transform” of the decoherence functional and evaluate the corresponding n-point functions.

Abstract:The formalism of generalized quantum histories, allowing a symmetrical treatment of space and time correlations, is briefly reviewed, and used to characterize spatial and temporal entanglement. An operative protocol is presented, to map a history state into the ket of a static composite system. We show, by examples, how the Leggett‐Garg and the temporal CHSH inequalities can be violated in this approach. The formalism of generalized quantum histories allows a symmetrical treatment of space and time correlations, by taking different traces of the same history density matrix. In this framework, the characterization of spatial and temporal entanglement is revisited. An operative protocol is presented, to map a history state into the ket of a static composite system. The Emergence of Hydrodynamic Equations from Quantum Theory: A Decoherent Histories Analysis

Abstract:The most general description of the classical world is in terms of local densities (such as number, momentum, energy), and these typically evolve according to evolution equations of hydrodynamic form. To explain the emergent classicality of these variables from an underlying quantum theory, it is therefore necessary to show, firstly, that these variables exhibit negligible interference, and secondly, that the probabilities for histories of them are peaked around hydrodynamic evolution. The implementation of this programme in the context of the decoherent histories approach to quantum theory is described. It is argued that, for a system of weakly interacting particles, the eigenstates of local densities (averaged over a sufficiently large volume) remain approximate eigenstates under time evolution. This is a consequence of their close connection with the corresponding exactly conserved (and so exactly decoherent) quantities. The subsequent derivation of hydrodynamic equations from decoherent histories is discussed.

Abstract:We investigate the sea quark polarization in the nucleon by means of a combined next to leading order analysis to the recently enlarged set of inclusive and semi-inclusive polarized deep inelastic scattering data. Using the Lagrange multiplier method, we asses the uncertainty inherent to the extraction of the different spin dependent parton densities in a QCD global fit, and the impact of the increased set of semi-inclusive data now available. We comment on future prospects at RHIC and JLAB and their potential impact in the future determination of polarized parton densities.

Abstract:The predictions of the Bohmian and the decoherent (or consistent) histories formulations of the quantum mechanics of a closed system are compared for histories—sequences of alternatives at a series of times. For certain kinds of histories, Bohmian mechanics and decoherent histories may both be formulated in the same mathematical framework within which they can be compared. In that framework, Bohmian mechanics and decoherent histories represent a given history by different operators. Their predictions for the probabilities of histories of a closed system therefore generally differ. However, in an idealized model of measurement, the predictions of Bohmian mechanics and decoherent histories coincide for the probabilities of records of measurement outcomes. The formulations are thus difficult to distinguish experimentally. They may differ in their accounts of the past history of the Universe in quantum cosmology.

Abstract:Classical mechanics and standard Copenhagen quantum mechanics respect subspace implications. For example, if a particle is confined in a particular region $R$ of space, then in these theories we can deduce that it is confined in regions containing $R$. However, subspace implications are generally violated by versions of quantum theory that assign probabilities to histories, such as the consistent histories approach. I define here a new criterion, ordered consistency, which refines the criterion of consistency and has the property that inferences made by ordered consistent sets do not violate subspace relations. This raises the question: do the operators defining our observations form an ordered consistent history? If so, ordered consistency defines a version of quantum theory with greater predictive power than the consistent histories formalism. If not, and our observations are defined by a non-ordered consistent quantum history, then subspace implications are not generally valid.

Abstract:It will be presented in this chapter a historical account of the consistent histories interpretation of quantum mechanics based on primary and secondary literature. Firstly, the formalism of the consistent histories approach will be outlined. Secondly, the works by Robert Griffiths and Roland Omnès will be discussed. Griffiths' seminal 1984 paper, the first physicist to have proposed a consistent-histories interpretation of quantum mechanics, followed by Omnès' 1990 paper, were instrumental to the consistent-histories model based on Boolean logic. Thirdly, Murray Gell-Mann and James Hartle's steps to their own version of consistent-histories approach, motivated by a cosmological perspective, will then be described and evaluated. Gell-Mann and Hartle understood that spontaneous decoherence could path the way to a concrete physical model to Griffiths' consistent histories. Moreover, the collective biography of these figures will be put in the context of the role played by the Santa Fe Institute, co-founded by Gell-Mann in 1984 in Santa Fe, New Mexico, where Hartle is also a member of the external faculty.

Abstract:A formulation of the consistent histories approach to quantum mechanics in terms of generalized observables (POV measures) and effect operators is provided. The usual notion of `history' is generalized to the notion of `effect history'. The space of effect histories carries the structure of a D-poset. Recent results of J.D. Maitland Wright imply that every decoherence functional defined for ordinary histories can be uniquely extended to a bi-additive decoherence functional on the space of effect histories. Omnes' logical interpretation is generalized to the present context. The result of this work considerably generalizes and simplifies the earlier formulation of the consistent effect histories approach to quantum mechanics communicated in a previous work of this author.

Abstract:We reconsider the Decoherent Histories approach to Quantum Mechanics and we analyze some problems related to its interpretation which, according to us, have not been adequately clarified by its proponents. We put forward some assumptions which, in our opinion, are necessary for a realistic interpretation of the probabilities that the formalism attaches to decoherent histories. We prove that such assumptions, unless one limits the set of the decoherent families which can be taken into account, lead to a logical contradiction. The line of reasoning we will follow is conceptually different from other arguments which have been presented and which have been rejected by the supporters of the Decoherent Histories approach. The conclusion is that the Decoherent Histories approach, to be considered as an interesting realistic alternative to the orthodox interpretation of Quantum Mechanics, requires the identification of a mathematically precise criterion to characterize an appropriate set of decoherent families which does not give rise to any problem.

Partial Decoherence of Histories and the Diosi Test

Abstract:In the decoherent histories approach to quantum theory, attention focuses on the conditions under which probabilities may be assigned to sets of quantum histories. A variety of conditions have been proposed, but the most important one is decoherence, which means that the interference between every pair of histories in the set is zero. Weaker conditions have been considered, such as consistency, or linear positivity, but these are ruled out by the requirement of consistent composition of subsystems, proposed by Diosi. Here we propose a new condition which we call partial decoherence, and is the requirement that every history has zero interference with its negation. This is weaker than decoherence and stronger than linear positivity (but its relation to consistency is less simply defined -- it is neither stronger nor weaker). Most importantly, it satisfies the Diosi condition. A strengthened Diosi condition is proposed, which partial decoherence narrowly fails, due to an unusual property of inhomogeneous histories. In an appendix an example is given of a set of histories which are consistent but not decoherent.
