Abstract:We report a novel approach to Fourier ptychographic microscopy (FPM) by using a digital micromirror device (DMD) and a coherent laser source (532 nm) for generating spatially modulated sample illumination. Previously demonstrated FPM systems are all based on partially-coherent illumination, which offers limited throughput due to insufficient brightness. Our FPM employs a high power coherent laser source to enable shot-noise limited high-speed imaging. For the first time, a digital micromirror device (DMD), imaged onto the back focal plane of the illumination objective, is used to generate spatially modulated sample illumination field for ptychography. By coding the on/off states of the micromirrors, the illumination plane wave angle can be varied at speeds more than 4 kHz. A set of intensity images, resulting from different oblique illuminations, are used to numerically reconstruct one high-resolution image without obvious laser speckle. Experiments were conducted using a USAF resolution target and a fiber sample, demonstrating high-resolution imaging capability of our system. We envision that our approach, if combined with a coded-aperture compressive-sensing algorithm, will further improve the imaging speed in DMD-based FPM systems. (C) 2015 Optical Society of America
Dual-frequency Doppler Velocimeter Based on Delay Interferometric Optical Phase-Locking

Abstract:We present a dual-frequency laser Doppler velocimeter (DF-LDV) relying on a DF laser source (DFLS) generated by optical phase-locking two individual lasers to a common unbalanced Mach–Zehnder interferometer, which allows achieving high stability regardless of the DF separation of the lasers. This DFLS is evaluated using an optical frequency comb, testifying to the generation of DFLS with large DF separation up to terahertz with flexible tunability and high stability. Demonstration of DF-LDV using the DFLS of ∼ 1.024 T H z separation has achieved 1.62 × 10 − 2 mm/s velocity resolution even for a slow velocity of 1.8 m m / s in a mere 5 s acquisition time, confirming the high resolution and efficient speckle noise suppression enabled by the proposed DF-LDV. Featuring high precision, flexibility, and robustness, this method is particularly attractive from the practical point of view.

Abstract:Focused laser differential interferometry (FLDI) is an important diagnostic for measuring density fluctuations in high-speed flows. Currently, however, high dynamic range FLDI is limited to photodiode measurements. In order to spatially resolve multiple locations within complex flows, we present a novel, to the best of our knowledge, refractive-optic imaging FLDI concept that not only produces two-dimensional images without scanning but also reduces the measurement noise floor of those images. To demonstrate this concept, a 33 × 33 grid of FLDI points is first generated using a microlens array. Then, the beams are split and recombined using two polarized Mach-Zehnder interferometers to maximize flexibility in beam separation and optimize signal sensitivity. Next, the FLDI points are collected slightly out of focus on a high-speed camera in order to increase the number of pixels n per FLDI point, thereby reducing noise floor by <i>n</i>. Finally, an under-expanded jet with a characteristic screech at 14.1 kHz is tested with the imaging FLDI setup, showing clear barrel and reflected shock features as well as spatially varying turbulence densities. Overall, this unique concept enables the creation of reduced-noise-floor, two-dimensional FLDI datasets for the study of supersonic and hypersonic flows.

Abstract:Femtosecond laser electronic excitation tagging (FLEET) velocimetry is characterized for the first time at high-pressure, low-temperature conditions. FLEET signal intensity and signal lifetime data are examined for their thermodynamic dependences; temperatures range from 89 K to 275 K while pressures are varied from 85 kPa to 400 kPa. The FLEET signal intensity is found to scale linearly with the flow density. An inverse density dependence is observed in the FLEET signal lifetime data, with little independent sensitivity to the other thermodynamic conditions apparent. FLEET velocimetry is demonstrated in the NASA Langley 0.3-m Transonic Cryogenic Tunnel. Velocity measurements are made over the entire operational envelope: Mach numbers from 0.2 to 0.75, total (stagnation) temperatures from 100 K to 280 K, and total pressures from 100 kPa to 400 kPa. The velocity measurement accuracy is assessed over this domain of conditions. Measurement errors below 1.15 percent are typical, with slightly decreasing accuracy as temperatures are decreased. Assessment of the measurement precision finds a zero-velocity precision of 0.4 m/s. The precision is observed to have a weak temperature dependence as well, likely a result of the shorter lifetimes experienced at higher densities. The velocity dynamic range is found to have a nominal value of 650. Finally the spatial resolution of the measurements is found to be a dominated by the physical size of the FLEET signal and advective motion. The transverse spatial resolution is found to be 1 mm, while the streamwise spatial resolution is dependent on velocity with a minimum of 2 mm and a maximum of 3.3 mm.

Abstract:Recent advances in pulsed electron gun technology have resulted in femtosecond electron pulses becoming available for ultrafast electron diffraction experiments. For experiments investigating chemical dynamics in the gas phase, the resolution is still limited to picosecond time scales due to the velocity mismatch between laser and electron pulses. Tilted laser pulses can be used for velocity matching, but thus far this has not been demonstrated over an extended target in a diffraction setting. We demonstrate an optical configuration to deliver high-intensity laser pulses with a tilted pulse front for velocity matching over the typical length of a gas jet. A laser pulse is diffracted from a grating to introduce angular dispersion, and the grating surface is imaged on the target using large demagnification. The laser pulse duration and tilt angle were measured at and near the image plane using two different techniques: second harmonic cross correlation and an interferometric method. We found that a temporal resolution on the order of 100 fs can be achieved over a range of approximately 1 mm around the image plane.

Abstract:We describe a high-speed single-shot multi-frame interferometric imaging technique enabling multiple interferometric images with femtosecond exposure time over a 50 ns event window to be recorded, following a single laser-induced excitation event. The stroboscopic illumination of a framing camera is made possible through the use of a doubling cavity that produces a femtosecond pulse train that is synchronized to the gated exposure windows of the individual frames of the camera. The imaging system utilizes a Michelson interferometer to extract phase and ultimately displacement information. We demonstrate the method by monitoring laser-induced deformation and the propagation of high-amplitude acoustic waves in a silicon nitride membrane. The method is applicable to a wide range of fast irreversible phenomena such as crack branching, shock-induced material damage, cavitation, and dielectric breakdown.

Abstract:Here we propose, describe, and provide experimental proof-of-concept demonstrations of a multi-dimensional, non-contact length metrology system design based on high resolution (millimeter to sub-100 micron) frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) ladar and trilateration based on length measurements from multiple, optical fiber-connected transmitters. With an accurate FMCW ladar source, the trilateration based design provides 3D resolution inherently independent of stand-off range and allows self-calibration to provide flexible setup of a field system. A proof-of-concept experimental demonstration was performed using a highly-stabilized, 2 THz bandwidth chirped laser source, two emitters, and one scanning emitter/receiver providing 1D surface profiles (2D metrology) of diffuse targets. The measured coordinate precision of < 200 microns was determined to be limited by laser speckle issues caused by diffuse scattering of the targets.

Abstract:Many areas of optical science require an accurate measurement of optical spectra. Devices based on laser speckle promise compact wavelength measurement, with attometer-level sensitivity demonstrated for single wavelength laser fields. The measurement of multimode spectra using this approach would be attractive, yet this is currently limited to picometer resolution. Here, we present a method to improve the resolution and precision of speckle-based multi-wavelength measurements. We measure multiple wavelengths simultaneously, in a device comprising a single 1-m-long step-index multimode fiber and a fast camera. Independent wavelengths separated by as little as 1 fm are retrieved with 0.2 fm precision using principal component analysis. The method offers a viable way to measure sparse spectra containing multiple individual lines and may find application in the tracking of multiple lasers in fields such as quantum technologies and optical telecommunications.

Assessment of a multibeam Fizeau wedge interferometer for Doppler wind lidar

Abstract:The Fabry-Perot interferometer is the standard instrument for the direct detection Doppler lidar measurement of atmospheric wind speeds. The multibeam Fizeau wedge has some practical advantages over the Fabry-Perot, such as the linear fringe pattern, and is evaluated for this application. The optimal Fizeau must have a resolving power of 10(6) or more. As the multibeam Fizeau wedge is pushed to such high resolving power, the interference fringes of the device become complicated by asymmetry and secondary maxima. A simple condition for the interferometer plate reflectance, optical gap, and wedge angle reveals whether a set of parameters will yield simple, Airy-like fringes or complex Fizeau fringes. Tilting of the Fizeau wedge improves the fringe shape and permits an extension of the regime of Airy-like fringes to higher resolving power. Sufficient resolving power for the wind lidar application is shown to be possible with a large-gap, low-finesse multibeam Fizeau wedge. Liabilities of the multibeam Fizeau wedge in the wind lidar application include a smaller acceptance solid angle and calibration sensitivity to localized deviations of the plates from the ideal.

Abstract:The spatially resolved interrogation of a Fabry–Perot ultrasound sensor using a laser beam focused through a multimode fiber is demonstrated. To scan the beam across the sensor as required to read it out, optical wavefront shaping was employed to compensate for the scrambling of light in the fiber. By providing a means to map ultrasound through inexpensive, lightweight fibers, this could lead to new ultrasonic and photoacoustic imaging systems, such as endoscopes and flexible handheld probes.

Abstract:Hair-thin optical fiber endoscopes have opened up new paradigms for advanced imaging applications in vivo. In certain applications, such as optical coherence tomography (OCT), light-shaping structures may be required on fiber facets to generate needle-like Bessel beams with large depth-of-field, while in others shorter depths of field with high lateral resolutions are preferable. In this paper, we demonstrate a novel method to fabricate light-shaping structures on optical fibres, achieved via bonding encapsulated planar diffractive lenses onto fiber facets. Diffractive metallic structures have the advantages of being simple to design, fabricate and transfer, and our encapsulation approach is scalable to multi-layer stacks. As a demonstration, we design and transfer a Fresnel zone plate and a diffractive axicon onto fiber facets, and show that the latter device generates a needle-like Bessel beam with 350 mu m focal depth. We also evaluate the imaging performance of both devices and show that the axicon fiber is able to maintain focussed images of a USAF resolution target over a 150 mu m distance. Finally, we fabricate a two-layer stack of Fresnel zone plates on a fiber and characterise the modified beam profile and demonstrate good imaging performance. We anticipate our fabrication approach could enable multi-functional complex optical structures (e.g. using plasmonics, polarization control) to be integrated onto fibers for ultra-thin advanced imaging and sensing.

Abstract:A single-frame complete spatiotemporal characteristics measurement method of ultrafast laser pulses, named Carrier Frequency Division Multiplexing Spectral Interferometry (CFDMSI), is proposed and demonstrated. Based on the idea of frequency division multiplexing, the 3D spatiotemporal field E(x,y,t) of a femtosecond laser pulse can be reconstructed from a single spectral interferogram. The implementation of CFDMSI is quite simple, just fixing a slit array at the entrance of an imaging spectrometer, then injecting the unknown pulse and the reference pulse into the imaging spectrometer at a certain cross angle. By recording and analyzing a single spectral interferogram, the unknown pulse‘s spatiotemporal field in the sampling area of the slit array can be obtained. The principle and implementation of CFDMSI are introduced, and its effectiveness is verified by a demonstration experiment.

Abstract:We have developed a scalable, ultrafast laser beam combination scheme, which can combine many beams using two diffractive optics. A feature of this approach is the information contained in the uncombined output beams, which can be used to derive phase error information. We show that a machine-learning algorithm can learn to stabilize beam combination with high efficiency, by finding correlations between uncombined output beam patterns and phase errors.

Abstract:Multi-reflection time-of-flight (MR-ToF) analyzers must control the transversal ion dispersion, orthogonal to the axis of reflection, conventionally via periodic refocusing, or more recently the shaped electrode structure adopted by the Astral analyzer. In principle, the complexity of the dispersion control on every oscillation may be avoided at a cost of a smaller number of oscillations, during which the dispersion doesn't exceed the limit of unrecoverable overlap. A method of dispersion control has been demonstrated experimentally and in simulation, whereby the ion beam is configured by a long focus trans-axial lens made of a pair of quasi-elliptical plates mounted above and below the ion beam, in order to optimize the spatial spread of the ions at a distant detector. The collimation concept was shown to effectively control beam expansion. For experimental confirmation, a prototype Astral ana-lyzer was modified, and resolving power above 70k demonstrated.

Abstract:For ultrasonic non-destructive testing, the development of miniaturized, embeddable, and distributed ultrasonic transducers has always been a hot research topic. In light of this, a novel fiber optic laser-ultrasonic transducer, employing the long-period fiber grating (LPFG), was introduced in this study to facilitate the implementation of embedded and distributed applications. LPFG couples the light transmitted in the optical fiber into the photoacoustic conversion material. After the energy conversion of optic-heat-acoustic, ultrasonic waves can be excited. The finite element models of the mode coupling and photoacoustic conversion of LPFG were established. The transmission spectrum and optical power of LPFG were measured by experiments. The results show that by adjusting the structural parameters of LPFG to make it appear as different transmission depths, the quantitative control of the optical power distribution of the core and cladding can be realized. Two LPFGs, each with distinct coupling coefficients, were fused together and anchored onto aluminum plates to create an ultrasonic transducer with dual micro-ultrasonic sources. An ultrasonic excitation experiment was carried out, and the results revealed that both two LPFGs could excite ultrasonic waves with a peak-to-peak value of about 500 mV and a center frequency of about 3 MHz. The study validates the proposed fiber-optic ultrasonic transducer's steady performance and its potential for multi-point applications.
