Abstract:We presented two kinds of innovative velocimetry with high temporal and spatial resolution respectively based on the Laser Induced Fluorescence Photobleaching Anemometer (LIFPA) and Stimulated Emission Depletion (STED) techniques. The temporal and spatial resolution has been for the first time achieved to 5-10 mu s and 70 nm, respectively. To our knowledge, the temporal resolution is about 100X better than that of the state of the art microPIV, which is currently the most widely used velocimetry in microfluidics community. And for the first time, flow velocity distribution in a nanocapillary has been measured with a spatial resolution better than 70 nm.
Volumetric Three-Component Velocimetry: a New Tool for 3D Flow Measurement

Abstract:Volumetric Three-component Velocimetry (V3V) is a novel technique for instantaneous volumetric measurement of the three-dimensional velocity fields. The core of V3V technique is a unique single-body, three-aperture, 12 mega-pixel camera for "point and shoot" 3D imaging. V3V uses volume illumination with Nd:YAG laser so that particles inside a large cubic volume up to 120x120x10 mm can be recorded based on two-frame double-exposure at 7.25 capture rate. The raw particle images are processed to obtain the 3D positions of tracer particles using a fast and parallel triangle search algorithm. Two frame 3D Particle tracking is then performed to process particle cloud data to obtain 3D velocity vectors. From each capture up to 45,000 particle velocity vectors randomly located in the measurement volume are obtained with the processing time between 1~5 minutes per capture depending on the particle seeding density. The capability of the V3V system is assessed in the following experiments : (1) Flow past a cube, (2) Flow around a vortex ring and (3) Wake behind rough surface. Those experiments were used to show the viability of the V3V for 3D flow measurements in a volumetric domain. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________

Abstract:We demonstrate dispersive optical phased arrays based on the Si3N4-on-Si platform. Two-dimensional beam steering across a 45.6 °× 10 °FOV with a beam width of 1.45 °× 0.032 °is achieved by wavelength tuning alone. Assessment of a multibeam Fizeau wedge interferometer for Doppler wind lidar

Abstract:The Fabry-Perot interferometer is the standard instrument for the direct detection Doppler lidar measurement of atmospheric wind speeds. The multibeam Fizeau wedge has some practical advantages over the Fabry-Perot, such as the linear fringe pattern, and is evaluated for this application. The optimal Fizeau must have a resolving power of 10(6) or more. As the multibeam Fizeau wedge is pushed to such high resolving power, the interference fringes of the device become complicated by asymmetry and secondary maxima. A simple condition for the interferometer plate reflectance, optical gap, and wedge angle reveals whether a set of parameters will yield simple, Airy-like fringes or complex Fizeau fringes. Tilting of the Fizeau wedge improves the fringe shape and permits an extension of the regime of Airy-like fringes to higher resolving power. Sufficient resolving power for the wind lidar application is shown to be possible with a large-gap, low-finesse multibeam Fizeau wedge. Liabilities of the multibeam Fizeau wedge in the wind lidar application include a smaller acceptance solid angle and calibration sensitivity to localized deviations of the plates from the ideal.

Abstract:Focused laser differential interferometry (FLDI) is an important diagnostic for measuring density fluctuations in high-speed flows. Currently, however, high dynamic range FLDI is limited to photodiode measurements. In order to spatially resolve multiple locations within complex flows, we present a novel, to the best of our knowledge, refractive-optic imaging FLDI concept that not only produces two-dimensional images without scanning but also reduces the measurement noise floor of those images. To demonstrate this concept, a 33 × 33 grid of FLDI points is first generated using a microlens array. Then, the beams are split and recombined using two polarized Mach-Zehnder interferometers to maximize flexibility in beam separation and optimize signal sensitivity. Next, the FLDI points are collected slightly out of focus on a high-speed camera in order to increase the number of pixels n per FLDI point, thereby reducing noise floor by <i>n</i>. Finally, an under-expanded jet with a characteristic screech at 14.1 kHz is tested with the imaging FLDI setup, showing clear barrel and reflected shock features as well as spatially varying turbulence densities. Overall, this unique concept enables the creation of reduced-noise-floor, two-dimensional FLDI datasets for the study of supersonic and hypersonic flows.

Abstract:Terahertz tomography is a promising method among non-destructive inspection techniques to detect faults and defects in dielectric samples. Recently, image quality was improved significantly through the incorporation of a priori information and off-axis data. However, this improvement has come at the cost of increased measurement time. To aim toward industrial applications, it is therefore necessary to speed up the measurement by parallelizing the data acquisition employing multi-channel setups. In this work, we present two tomographic frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) systems working at a bandwidth of 230–320 GHz, equipped with an eight-channel detector array, and we compare their imaging results with those of a single-pixel setup. While in the first system the additional channels are used exclusively to detect radiation refracted by the sample, the second system features an f-θ lens, focusing the beam at different positions on its flat focal plane, and thus utilizing the whole detector array directly. The usage of the f-θ lens in combination with a scanning mirror eliminates the necessity of the formerly used slow translation of a single-pixel transmitter. This opens up the potential for a significant increase in acquisition speed, in our case by a factor of four to five, respectively.

Abstract:A novel all-fiber multipoint velocity interferometer system for any reflectors (VISAR) is developed and demonstrated. The setup employs single-mode fibers and fiber couplers to create more probing ports based on the all-fiber VISAR. A time division multiplexing scheme is implemented to align the interfering signals of different points in time sequence. A prototype two-point all-fiber VISAR is established and used to measure velocities on the same specimen impacted by the split Hopkinson pressure bar. Abstract:Tomographic particle image velocimetry (Tomo-PIV) is a powerful tool for measuring fluid velocity. However, its use in deep and narrow spaces presents challenges due to the limited optical observation window. As a result, the spatial resolution along the depth direction is significantly constrained by the short base-line. An illustrative example is the measurement of three-dimensional (3D) fluid velocity within a functioning turbine engine. To mitigate the problem, this work proposes a novel Tomo-PIV technique called kaleidoscopic light field (KLF) camera-based PIV (referred to as KLF-PIV). This imaging system divides the captured scene into nine distinct perspectives using a single sensor, thereby enabling 3D resolution through multi-ocular vision. The study investigates the ultimate volumetric measurement performance of the KLF-PIV technique through Gaussian optics simulation, and compares it with the micro-lens array (MLA) based light field (LF) camera. The results demonstrate that KLF-PIV achieves significantly improved axial resolution and enlarged depth of field (DOF). It is also more suitable for scenarios with denser illuminated particles. Compared to LF-PIV, the proposed method enables more accurate measurements with notably reduced computational load ( >50% ). Overall, the KLF-PIV provides a precise and compact single-sensor Tomo-PIV technique adaptable to the limited optical window, making it a valuable diagnostics tool in challenging scenarios.

Simultaneous two-dimensional velocity and distance measurements based on laser triangulation

Abstract:Laser triangulation sensors are widely used in industry for surface inspection due to simple setup, micron precision and low cost. Conventional laser triangulation methods only enable axial distance measurement limiting further applications, and their lateral resolution is limited by surface microstructure. For overcoming these issues, based on the geometric optics we propose novel theoretical models and methods to achieve lateral velocity measurement. Moreover, a novel axial distance measurement method using edge detection is presented, which can increase the lateral resolution by the order of one magnitude. The performance of the proposed methods are validated through simultaneous orthogonal velocity and distance measurements on a moving established metal specimen, showing the relative error and relative uncertainty can reach 10^{-4}. The versatility of this multi degree of freedom measurement method paves the way for its broad application across all laser triangulation systems. Therefore, this simultaneous two-dimensional velocity and distance sensing approach can propel advancements in dynamic behavior discipline, including but not limited to motion mechanology and fluid mechanics.

Tilted Femtosecond Pulses for Velocity Matching in Gas-Phase Ultrafast Electron Diffraction

Abstract:Recent advances in pulsed electron gun technology have resulted in femtosecond electron pulses becoming available for ultrafast electron diffraction experiments. For experiments investigating chemical dynamics in the gas phase, the resolution is still limited to picosecond time scales due to the velocity mismatch between laser and electron pulses. Tilted laser pulses can be used for velocity matching, but thus far this has not been demonstrated over an extended target in a diffraction setting. We demonstrate an optical configuration to deliver high-intensity laser pulses with a tilted pulse front for velocity matching over the typical length of a gas jet. A laser pulse is diffracted from a grating to introduce angular dispersion, and the grating surface is imaged on the target using large demagnification. The laser pulse duration and tilt angle were measured at and near the image plane using two different techniques: second harmonic cross correlation and an interferometric method. We found that a temporal resolution on the order of 100 fs can be achieved over a range of approximately 1 mm around the image plane.

Abstract:Femtosecond light pulses carrying optical angular momentums (OAMs), possessing intriguing properties of helical phase fronts and ultrafast temporal profiles, enable many applications in nonlinear optics, strong-field physics and laser micro-machining. While generation of OAM-carrying ultrafast pulses and their interactions with matters have been intensively studied in experiments, three-dimensional characterization of ultrafast OAM-carrying light beams in spatio-temporal domain has, however, proved difficult to achieve. Conventional measurement schemes rely on the use of a reference pulsed light beam which needs to be well-characterized in its phase front and to have sufficient overlap and coherence with the beam under test, largely limiting practical applications of these schemes. Here we demonstrate a self-referencing set-up based on a tilted interferometer that can be used to measure complete spatio-temporal information of OAM-carrying femtosecond pulses with different topological charges. Through scanning one interferometer arm, the spectral phase over the pulse spatial profile can be obtained using the tilted interference signal, and the temporal envelope of the light field at one particular position around its phase singularity can be retrieved simultaneously, enabling three-dimensional beam reconstruction. This self-referencing technique, capable of measuring spatio-temporal ultrafast optical-vortex beams, may find many applications in fields of nonlinear optics and light-matter interactions.

Abstract:Non-line-of-sight (NLOS) imaging has the ability to reconstruct hidden objects, allowing a wide range of applications. Existing NLOS systems rely on pulsed lasers and time-resolved single-photon detectors to capture the information encoded in the time of flight of scattered photons. Despite remarkable advances, the pulsed time-of-flight LIDAR approach has limited temporal resolution and struggles to detect the frequency-associated information directly. Here, we propose and demonstrate the coherent scheme—frequency-modulated continuous wave calibrated by optical frequency comb—for high-resolution NLOS imaging, velocimetry, and vibrometry. Our comb-calibrated coherent sensor presents a system temporal resolution at subpicosecond and its superior signal-to-noise ratio permits NLOS imaging of complex scenes under strong ambient light. We show the capability of NLOS localization and 3D imaging at submillimeter scale and demonstrate NLOS vibrometry sensing at an accuracy of dozen Hertz. Abstract:Nonmechanical beam-steering devices are of importance to achieve fast, compact, and reliable LiDAR. We propose a 2D nonmechanical beam-steering device based on a virtually imaged phased array (VIPA) for frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) LiDAR. In the design, 2D nonmechanical beam steering and high-resolution FMCW ranging can be achieved at the same time by wavelength tuning. The design formulas of the VIPA-based 2D disperser are greatly simplified by introducing appropriate approximation, and a feasible design procedure is proposed for the first time, to the best of our knowledge. Based on the proposed method, several design examples with different optimal properties are exhibited.

Abstract:Here we propose, describe, and provide experimental proof-of-concept demonstrations of a multi-dimensional, non-contact length metrology system design based on high resolution (millimeter to sub-100 micron) frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) ladar and trilateration based on length measurements from multiple, optical fiber-connected transmitters. With an accurate FMCW ladar source, the trilateration based design provides 3D resolution inherently independent of stand-off range and allows self-calibration to provide flexible setup of a field system. A proof-of-concept experimental demonstration was performed using a highly-stabilized, 2 THz bandwidth chirped laser source, two emitters, and one scanning emitter/receiver providing 1D surface profiles (2D metrology) of diffuse targets. The measured coordinate precision of < 200 microns was determined to be limited by laser speckle issues caused by diffuse scattering of the targets.

Abstract:Doppler velocimetry is one of the most important and active branches of laser-feedbacFk research fields.The basic principle of the laser-feedback Doppler velocimetry(LFDV) is introduced and the research progress in this domain is reviewed.The LFDV based on the feedback effect of an orthogonally polarized dual-frequency laser is specially presented and analyzed in detail.A Doppler velocity measurement method based on the laser feedback of a dual-frequency Nd:YAG microchip laser is designed and an experimental configuration is given.The principle and influence factors of this method are discussed,and the feasibility is demonstrated as well.

Abstract:We describe a high-speed single-shot multi-frame interferometric imaging technique enabling multiple interferometric images with femtosecond exposure time over a 50 ns event window to be recorded, following a single laser-induced excitation event. The stroboscopic illumination of a framing camera is made possible through the use of a doubling cavity that produces a femtosecond pulse train that is synchronized to the gated exposure windows of the individual frames of the camera. The imaging system utilizes a Michelson interferometer to extract phase and ultimately displacement information. We demonstrate the method by monitoring laser-induced deformation and the propagation of high-amplitude acoustic waves in a silicon nitride membrane. The method is applicable to a wide range of fast irreversible phenomena such as crack branching, shock-induced material damage, cavitation, and dielectric breakdown.

Abstract:Many problems in fluid mechanics require single-shot 3D measurements of fluid flows, but are limited by available techniques. Here, we design and build a novel flexible high-speed two-color scanning volumetric laser-induced fluorescence (H2C-SVLIF) technique. The technique is readily adaptable to a range of temporal and spatial resolutions, rendering it easily applicable to a wide spectrum of experiments. The core equipment consists of a single monochrome high-speed camera and a pair of ND: YAG lasers pulsing at different wavelengths. The use of a single camera for direct 3D imaging eliminates the need for complex volume reconstruction algorithms and easily allows for the correction of distortion defects. Motivated by the large data loads that result from high-speed imaging techniques, we develop a custom, open-source, software package, which allows for real time playback with correction of perspective defects while simultaneously overlaying arbitrary 3D data. The technique is capable of simultaneous measurement of 3D velocity fields and a secondary tracer in the flow. To showcase the flexibility and adaptability of our technique, we present a set of experiments: (1) the flow past a sphere, and (2) vortices embedded in laminar pipe flow. In the first experiment, two channel measurements are taken at a resolution of 512 × 512 × 512 with volume rates of 65.1 Hz. In the second experiment, a single-color SVLIF system is integrated on a moving stage, providing imaging at 1280 × 304 × 256 with volume rates of 34.8 Hz. Although this second experiment is only single channel, it uses identical software and much of the same hardware to demonstrate the extraction of multiple information channels from single channel volumetric images.
