Abstract:Any ambitious construction project requires architects for its design and engineers who apply the design to the real world. As scientific research shifts towards large groups which focus on the engineering aspects of linking data to existing models, architectural skills are becoming rare among young theorists. Senior researchers should mentor qualified students and postdocs to think creatively about the big picture without unwarranted loyalty to ancient blueprints from past generations of architects.

Abstract:There is a powerful lesson to be learned from this book. Science and scientific advancement are both influenced by our subjectivity. The Heisenberg uncertainty principle already demonstrated how much we can influence an experiment, but in the social sciences our subjectivity can influence things differently. Subjectivity is both a strength and a weakness as it leads us to pay attention to some data and ignore others. An innovator may see something in a set of data that has long escaped the attention of others. On the contrary, we may consistently ignore information that contradicts long-held beliefs or traditions. This is the real challenge of scientific innovation. We must strive to see beyond our self-imposed limitations. Much like a human being, the field of science is never completely immune from the problems of subjectivity such as bias and prejudice.

Abstract:EVERY INVENTION BEGINS with a problem-and the creative act of seeing a problem where others might just see unchangeable reality. For one 5-year-old, the problem was simple: She liked to have her tummy rubbed as she fell asleep. But her mom, exhausted from working two jobs, often fell asleep herself while putting her daughter to bed. "So [the girl] invented a teddy bear that would rub her belly for her," explains Stephanie Couch, executive director of the Lemelson MIT Program. Its mission is to nurture the next generation of inventors and entrepreneurs. ¶ Anyone can learn to be an inventor, Couch says, given the right resources and encouragement. "Invention doesn't come from some innate genius, it's not something that only really special people get to do," she says. Her program creates invention-themed curricula for U.S. classrooms, ranging from kin-dergarten to community college.

Abstract:Sybella Gurney (1870–1926) made important and largely unrecognized contributions to British community design theory and practice. This essay begins with an exploration of her youthful social reform activities and academic influences including Leonard Hobhouse, John Ruskin, Auguste Comte, Frederic Le Play, John Stuart Mill, and Ebenezer Howard. These foundational pursuits inspired her to become an ardent cooperator affiliated with the Garden Cities movement and to serve as a sociologist seeking to kindle a “new civic spirit” for post -World War I reconstruction. Gurney, as part of an idealistic circle of thinkers which included Patrick Geddes, considered sociology as a means to realize complete Garden City-states based upon scientific, ethical, and participatory principles.

Abstract:Abstract Earth is the only known habitable planet in the solar system. Understanding how Earth developed its unique habitability has been the frontier of Earth sciences and has become one of the main themes of current deep-space explorations. What are the decisive factors that led to a habitable planet? What is the role of solid Earth processes in the origin of life and in modulating the surface environment? Are Earth's habitability studies relevant to current challenges that human beings face? These questions have attracted the interest of both scientists and the public alike. NSR spoke to Prof. Charles H. Langmuir from Harvard University in the USA, who is a solid Earth geochemist who carries out research on diverse aspects of the plate tectonic geochemical cycle, including ocean ridges, convergent margins and intraplate volcanism. Prof. Langmuir is the author of the book How to Build a Habitable Planet (www.habitableplanet.org), one of the best Earth science books published in 2012.

Abstract:In the first half of the 20th century, architects and urban planners actively sought alternative models of urban life, sought to rethink the anthropogenic environment. American architect F. Lloyd Wright proposed the «Broadacre City» concept, which was described in his book «The Disappearing City». This concept is a reflection of the author's utopian vision of improving the social system, ensuring the equality of citizens and moving away from overpopulated cities. The aim of this article is: to determine the main characteristics of F. Lloyd Wright's utopian concept «Broadacre city»; to highlight the architectural features of various types of buildings and structures; to compare his work with the works of utopians who could have an influence on the concept. F. Lloyd Wright proposes to give each citizen of the country a plot of 1 acre for housing and farming, and the rest of the territory to be evenly distributed among public buildings and structures, namely: airfields, power plants, hotels, offices, farms, factories, hospitals, public centers, schools and universities, shopping and entertainment centers and gas stations. The article highlighted the leading signs that demonstrate the utopian nature of the concept, namely: the presence of features of transcendentalism, egalitarianism, economic self-sufficiency of the proposed urban formations, decentralization and adaptability and flexibility of urban planning solutions. F. Lloyd Wright's work is compared with the works of utopians who could influence the concept of «Broadacre city»: R. Owen, S. Fourier, E. Cabet, E. Bellamy, W. Morris, E. Howard. This demonstrates that nominally this concept has all the features of a utopia, except for those that are not considered characteristic of architectural and urban development, namely: there is no clearly defined political ideology, no prediction of the behavioral habits of the inhabitants, and no carefully developed economic system.

This movement has led to the unfolding of the sciences with all its good and bad consequences, to the appearance of natural rights and religious tolerance. The modern concepts of education, civil rights and the development of a critical general public are not conceivable without the ideas of the Enlightenment. But the idea of Enlightenment has shown more and more clearly two different faces during its development: One is showing the enlightenment of human beings concerning the environment they are part of and the other is showing the enlightenment about themselves. Both will be comment on. Without doubt we are in need of a new Enlightenment. It should teach us to trust our own spiritual capabilities, to look for a critical exchange with other minded people and other cultures, to create communities of free thinking people and to create protected public spaces for critical thinking

Abstract:Lawrence Buell is Powell M. Cabot Professor of American Literature in the Department of English and American Literature and Language at Harvard University, specialist on antebellum American literature and a pioneer of ecocriticism. He won the 2003 Warren-Brooks Award for outstanding literary criticism for his 2003 book on Ralph Waldo Emerson. His Writing for an Endangered World won the 2001 John G. Cawelti Award for the best book in the field of American Culture Studies. His major books include Literary Transcendentalism (1973), Emerson (2003), The Future of Environmental Criticism: Environmental Crisi's and Literary Imagination (2005), The American Transcendentalists: Essential Writings (2006), and Shades of the Planet: American Literature as World Literature (2007). In this interview, Professor Buell reflects upon his academic achievements during the last eight years since 2002, comments on the present development of ecocriticism in the United States and predicts the new dimensions of future developing trends. He clarifies the social responsibilities of humanity scholars and the interaction between literary criticism and social criticism and asserts that we must promote a re-contextualization of all of literary history in light of environmental history. He also pinpoints the intellectual beginning of his later turn toward ecocriticism. He considers Writing for an Endangered World to be the single best and fullest statement of his critical positions, in which he points out that we should read literary history and discourse as eco-discourse. He provides a model for the "second wave" ecocriticism: ecocriticism committed to tracking scandalous inequalities that have disproportionately created human health hazards for the poor, minority, and other marginalized population groups. His broader argument is that because that state and fate of all the world's peoples are intertwined as the result of sharing an increasingly common environment in an increasingly globalized world, in principle there is no environmental immunity anywhere from the forms of immiserization that are suffered most spectacularly and scandalously by society losers.

Abstract:The idealism that Fredrich Engels seeks to defeat in Dialectics of Nature today pervades online discourse and pedagogies of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The deterministic view that STEM is dedicated to unleashing the inherent power in objects for the service of privileged societies fails to understand the basic principles that Engels proposed. Engels exposes his contemporaries’ flawed understanding of science and technology and provides interdisciplinary examples that exemplify a different way of thinking. Outside of China, Engels’s ideas have been used suggest that social considerations cannot be a part of science because they limit the free exchange of ideas. Within China, particularly after the establishment of the People’s Republic in 1949, these ideas have been the basis of new thinking about the relationships among developers, the government, and the people. Moreover, readers of Dialectics of Nature who are familiar with the basic tenets of Science and Technology Studies (STS), such as social constructivism and actor-network theory, will not be so impressed with the idea that social theory has no place in understanding science and engineering. This analysis suggests avenues of cooperation for international science studies. In addition, it provides a starting point for pedagogies to promote the development for science and technology that reduces inequality and supports the notion that the liberal arts have an important place in the study of science and engineering, an insight known as STEAM.

Abstract:Reading the 26 essays of this well-regarded book now in its third edition was such a pleasurable experience that I wanted to teach a course in which I might assign it to my students. The text would be of particular interest to engineering students—it is about their profession—as well as of interest to people in the field of the history of technology. The main strength of the work is its sometimes novel choice of topics. Its occasional weakness is the failure of some important subjects to appear. Historians of technology will recognize some familiar names in the list of essayists. Merritt Roe Smith writes about Eli Whitney's role in the American system of manufacturing and demolishes the notion that Whitney pioneered manufacturing with interchangeable parts. Thomas Parke Hughes writes on Thomas Edison, and Ruth Schwartz Cowan on Ellen Swallow Richards, in 1870, the first woman to graduate from MIT and the driving force behind the establishment of the discipline of home economics.
