Abstract:The purpose of this work was to deeply understand the picosecond laser ablating mechanism of ceramic matrix composites from the perspective of micro heat transfer and physicochemical transformation. A finite element model containing carbon fiber and SiC matrix was established, and the picosecond laser ablation test was performed. The results show that the temperature during laser ablation could reach 3500 degrees C, the heat was easily conducted along the axial fiber, and the radial fiber prevented the heat conduction to a certain extent. As a result, the ablation depth of the needled fiber area was greater than that of the surface fiber area. Besides, due to the cooling effect of the pulse, forming a recondensing layer with SiC at the bottom of the ablated pit. Moreover, due to the enormous temperature difference created and the inhomogeneity of the recondensation process by laser ablation, cracks sprouted on the matrix and fibers caused by the resulting stresses. Besides, according to EDS element distribution and the presence of Si-O bond in XPS detection, the composition of the micron-sized granular oxide was determined to be SiO2.
