Abstract:The rare-earth aluminate perovskite (ReAP:Ce) scintillation crystals exhibit high density and fast decay time, rendering them promising candidates for PET detectors. Achieving component optimization of ReAP:Ce with superior comprehensive performance necessitates numerous experimental trials, which still remains a challenge. In this study, we developed a miniaturized Czochralski (CZ) system utilizing a solid-liquid surface model and achieved rapid growth of millimeter-scale ReAP:Ce scintillation crystals. Our system consumes approximately 20 grams of raw materials per growth cycle within 36 hours, making the exploration of numerous samples possible. Based on this system, we grew a series of (Gd x Y 1-x )AP:Ce(x=0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1) single crystals, achieving cost-effectiveness by excluding expensive element Lu. The as-grown crystals exhibit high quality with a minimum diameter of 4 mm. Through optical and scintillation tests, we found that Y 0.5 Gd 0.5 AlO 3 :0.5% Ce possesses the best performance among these compositions, with a density of 6.43 g/cm 3 , light yield of 12000 photons/MeV, and fast decay component of 8.72 ns (42.08%). In conclusion, the miniaturized CZ system showcases high efficiency in exploring new crystals. The optimized (Gd 0.5 Y 0.5 )AP:Ce exhibits potential for PET detector development, offering a cost-effective alternative to LYSO with only a tenth of the expense.
