Abstract:A depth of interaction (DOI) detector for gamma-rays has been developed for a high-resolution positron emission tomography (PET) system dedicated to small animal studies. It is well known that different surface treatment on the crystals influences the total light output, and consequently affects the performance of the detectors. In order to optimize the performance of the new proposed DOI detector, we have focused on the comparison of the detectors consisting of narrow LSO crystals with different surface conditions. We observed a significant improvement in crystal identification, energy resolution, time resolution and detector response resolution for constructing detectors using polished crystals compared to those using roughened LSO crystals. The results of this study can provide useful information for LSO detectors to be used in practical PET systems.

Abstract:Coincidence timing resolution (CTR) is an important parameter in clinical positron emission tomography (PET) scanners to increase the signal-to-noise ratio of PET images by using time-of-flight (TOF) information. Lutetium (Lu) based scintillators are often used for TOF-PET systems. However, the self-radiation of Lu-based scintillators may influence the image quality for ultra-low activity PET imaging. Recently, a gadolinium fine aluminum gallate (Ce:GFAG) scintillation crystal that features a fast decay time (∼55 ns) and no self-radiation was developed. The present study aimed at optimizing the GFAG crystal surface treatment to enhance both CTR and energy resolution (ER). The TOF-PET detector consisted of a GFAG crystal (3.0 × 3.0 × 20 mm3) and a SiPM with an effective area of 3.0 × 3.0 mm2. The timing and energy signals were extracted using a high-frequency SiPM readout circuit and then were digitized using a CAMAC DAQ system. The CTR and ER were evaluated with nine different crystal surface treatments such as partial saw-cut and chemical polishing and the 1-side saw-cut was the best choice among the treatments. The respective CTR and ER of 202 ± 2 ps and 9.5 ± 0.1% were obtained with the 1-side saw-cut; the other 5-side mechanically polished GFAG crystals had respective values which were 18 ps (9.0%) and 1.3% better than those of the all-side mechanically polished GFAG crystal. The chemically polished GFAG crystals also offered enhanced CTR and ER of about 17 ps (8.2%) and 2.1%, respectively, over the mechanically polished GFAG crystals.

Abstract:Positron emission tomography (PET) is widely used in the diagnosis of tumors, cardiovascular system diseases, and neurological diseases. Scintillation crystals are an important part of PET scanners; they can convert γ photons into fluorescent photons to obtain their energy, time, and position information. Currently, an important research goal in PET is to find scintillation crystals with better performance. In this work, the principle of scintillation crystals is introduced, and the properties and requirements of scintillation crystals in different PET scanners are analyzed. At present, Lu2(1−x)Y2xSiO5 (LYSO) is the scintillation crystal with the best comprehensive properties. LaBr3 performs even better regarding the timing characteristics and light output; however, LaBr3 has not been used in any PET scanner because of its deliquescence. Detectors made of Gd3(Ga, Al)5O12 (GAGG) exhibit a high depth of interaction (DOI) resolution and have considerable application potential. The application fields of PET are constantly expanding, and its future development aims to achieve high spatial resolution and high sensitivity, which require scintillation crystals with better performance.

Abstract:Abstract Silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) are now widely used for positron emission tomography (PET) applications because of their high gain and low noise characteristics. The PET image quality has been improved with the advancement of time-of-flight (TOF) and depth-of-interaction (DOI) measurement techniques. For brain-dedicated PET systems, both TOF and DOI information are beneficial for enhancing the reconstructed PET image quality. In a previous study, we proposed SiPM-based dual-ended readout PET detectors that used a mean time method to achieve coincidence timing resolution (CTR) of 349 ps and DOI resolution of 2.9 mm. However, the coincidence timing resolution (CTR) was worse than 300 ps since the crystal surface and the reflector type were not optimized. This study aimed at investigating the optimal crystal surface treatment and the reflector material to achieve a sub-200 ps CTR and sub-3 mm DOI resolution with a dual-ended readout PET detector using an LYSO crystal (2.9 × 2.9 × 20 mm 3 ). The scintillation light inside the LYSO crystal was read out by two SiPMs using the dual-ended readout method. The CTR and DOI resolution were measured with two different crystal surfaces (polished and saw-cut) and three different reflector material scenarios of ESR without grease (i.e., air coupling), ESR with optical grease and Teflon. We digitized the timing and energy signals by using a V775N TDC module (35 ps bit −1 ) and V965 QDC module, respectively. The combination of the saw-cut LYSO crystal and the ESR with air coupling resulted in the best CTR (188 ± 32 ps) and DOI resolution (2.9 ± 0.2 mm) with the dual-ended readout configuration. We concluded the dual-ended readout method in combination with the saw-cut crystal and the ESR reflector with air coupling can provide a sub-200 ps CTR and sub-3.0 mm DOI resolution simultaneously.

Abstract:The use of non-ideal reflective materials and low-precision manual manufacturing technologies is a fundamental technical obstacle blocking the positron emission tomography (PET) systems from achieving better performances. We propose to address that long-standing obstacle with advanced multilayer dielectric coating technologies. We designed an broad-band multilayer high-reflectivity (HR) film that can be coated directly on the surface of ultra-precision polished lutetium-yttrium oxyorthosilicate (LYSO) scintillators. The film consists of 48 layers of TiO2/SiO2/HfO2 which are deposited on LYSO scintillator crystal alternately using the electron beam evaporation method. The overall thickness of the HR film is about 3μm. The HR film combines 3 quarter wavelength reflective films, with the central wavelengths of 365 nm, 430 nm and 570 nm respectively, to match the emission spectrum of the LYSO scintillator. Abstract:A new scintillation crystal, cerium-doped lutetium oxyorthosilicate (LSO), was recently discovered, with light intensity 75% of NaI(Tl), scintillation decay time of 12 ns (30%) and 42 ns (70%), effective Z of 66, and density of 7.4 g/cc. The fast decay time and scintillation light output of LSO are superior to those of bismuth germanate (BGO) for positron emission tomography (PET) and the stopping power of LSO for 511 keV photons is only slightly lower than that of BGO. The authors directly compared the detection characteristics relevant to PET applications of small crystals of LSO (2*2*10 mm) with those of BGO. The energy resolution at 511 keV was 12% FWHM for LSO and two to three times wider for BGO. The coincidence timing of two opposing crystals, using a position sensitive photomultiplier tube (PMT) (Hamamatsu R2486), were 1.4 ns FWHM for LSO and more than three times higher for BGO. Using a fast PMT (Hamamatsu R3177), coincidence timing for LSO yielded 0.46 ns FWHM. These crystals are being used to simulate a small-scale PET scanner and to investigate its imaging performance.<<ETX>>

Abstract:Modern positron emission tomography (PET) detectors are made from pixelated scintillation crystal arrays and readout by Anger logic. The interaction position of the gamma-ray should be assigned to a crystal using a crystal position map or look-up table. Crystal identification is a critical procedure for pixelated PET systems. In this paper, we propose a novel crystal identification method for a dual-layer-offset LYSO based animal PET system via Lu-176 background radiation and mean shift algorithm. Single photon event data of the Lu-176 background radiation are acquired in list-mode for 3 h to generate a single photon flood map (SPFM). Coincidence events are obtained from the same data using time information to generate a coincidence flood map (CFM). The CFM is used to identify the peaks of the inner layer using the mean shift algorithm. The response of the inner layer is deducted from the SPFM by subtracting CFM. Then, the peaks of the outer layer are also identified using the mean shift algorithm. The automatically identified peaks are manually inspected by a graphical user interface program. Finally, a crystal position map is generated using a distance criterion based on these peaks. The proposed method is verified on the animal PET system with 48 detector blocks on a laptop with an Intel i7-5500U processor. The total runtime for whole system peak identification is 67.9 s. Results show that the automatic crystal identification has 99.98% and 99.09% accuracy for the peaks of the inner and outer layers of the whole system respectively. In conclusion, the proposed method is suitable for the dual-layer-offset lutetium based PET system to perform crystal identification instead of external radiation sources.

Abstract:Objective: Lutetium yttrium oxyorthosilicate (LYSO) scintillation crystals are used in positron emission tomography (PET) due to their high gamma attenuation, fair energy resolution, and fast scintillation decay time. The enduring presence of the 176Lu isotope, characterized by a half-life of 37.9 billion years, imparts a consistent radiation background (BG) profile that depends on the geometry and composition attributes of the LYSO crystals. Approach: In this work, we proposed a methodology for estimating the composition of LYSO crystals in cases where the exact Lutetium composition remains unknown. The connection between BG spectrum intensity and intrinsic radioactivity enables precise estimation of Lutetium density in LYSO crystal samples. This methodology was initially applied to a well-characterized LYSO crystal sample, yielding results closely aligned with the known composition. The composition estimation approach was extended to several samples of undisclosed LYSO crystals, encompassing single crystal and crystal array configurations. Furthermore, we model the background spectrum observed in the LYSO-based detector and validate the observed spectra via simulations. Main results: The estimated Lutetium composition exhibited adequate consistency across different samples of the same LYSO material, with variations of less than 1%. The result of the proposed approach coupled with the simulation successfully models the background radiation spectra in various LYSO-based detector geometries. Significance: The implications of this work extend to the predictive assessment of system behaviors and the autonomous configuration parameters governing LYSO-based detectors.

Abstract:Monte Carlo simulation plays an important role in the study of time of flight (TOF) positron emission tomography (PET) prototype. As it can incorporate accurate physical modeling of scintillation detection process, from scintillation light generation, the transport of scintillation photos through the crystal(s), to the conversion of these photons into electronic signals. The Geant4 based simulation software GATE can provide a user-friendly simulation platform containing the properties needed. In this work, we developed a dedicated module in GATE simulation tool. Using this module, we simulated the light yield, energy resolution, time resolution of LYSO pixels with the same cross-section ($4\times4 mm^{2}$) of different lengths: 5 mm, 10 mm, 15 mm, 20 mm, 25 mm, coupled to a PMT. The experiments were performed to validate the GATE simulation results. The results indicate that the best time resolution (484.0$\pm$67.5 ps) and energy resolution (13.3$\pm$0.4 %) could be produced by using pixel with length of 5 mm. The module can also be applied to other cases for precisely simulating optical photons propagating in scintillators.

Abstract:Lu 1.8 Y 0.2 SiO 5 :Ce (LYSO:Ce) crystals have become the material of choice for the current application of commercial TOF-PETs due to their high light output, short decay time, and fast rise time. In this study, a series of K + co-doped LYSO:Ce crystals were prepared by the μ-PD method, in which the K + concentrations were 0, 0.2 atom %, 0.6 atom %, and 1.0 atom %, respectively. It was found that the scintillation performances were simultaneously optimized when the K + concentration was 0.6 atom %. Compared to the sample of LYSO:Ce, LYSO:Ce, 0.6 atom % K showed an approximately 12.6 % increase in light yield, a shortening of the fastest scintillation decay time to 38.3 ns, and a 1.4-fold decrease in afterglow level. Moreover, the K + could replace the Lu 3+ site but could not cause the transition of Ce 3+ to Ce 4+ . Meanwhile, the connection between optical and luminescence performances and K + concentration was discussed. The luminescence contribution of Ce2 became stronger with the K + concentration increased. Furthermore, the research on K + co-doping of LYSO:Ce crystals could offer better knowledge and be informative for the selection of future co-dopants.

A High Count-Rate and Depth-of-Interaction Resolving Single Layered One-Side Readout Pixelated Scintillator Crystal Array for PET Applications

Abstract:Organ-specific, targeted Field-of-View (FoV) Positron Emission Tomography (PET)/Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) inserts are viable solutions for a number of imaging tasks where whole-body PET/MRI systems lack the necessary sensitivity and resolution. To meet the required PET detector performance of these systems, high count-rates and effective spatial resolutions on the order of a few mm, a novel two-axis patterned reflector foil pixelated scintillator crystal array design is developed and its proof-of-concept illustrated in-silico with the Monte Carlo radiation transport modelling toolkit Geant4. It is shown that the crystal surface roughness and phased open reflector cross-section patterns could be optimised to maximise either the PET radiation detector's effective spatial resolution, or count rate before event pile up. In addition, it was illustrated that these two parameters had minimal impact on the energy and time resolution of the proposed PET radiation detector design. Finally, it is shown that a PET radiation detector with balance performance could be constructed using ground crystals and phased open reflector cross-section pattern corresponding to the middle of the tested range.

Measure Pet Detector Performance with the Intrinsic Radioactivity of Scintillator

Abstract:One common configuration of PET detector modules is an array of scintillators, usually LYSO or its variant, coupled to multiple photomultiplier tubes (PMTs). The objective of this work was to test the feasibility of measuring the performance of such detector module with the intrinsic radioactivity from the 176Lu in the scintillator for its convenience and uniformity. The performance indices of a detector module include the individual crystal energy resolution and relative crystal light collection efficiency. They are indispensable in detector and system development. As no prominent photoelectric-peak exists in the 176Lu energy spectrum, it is not straight forward to obtain the detector performance indices from the acquired data. We developed a method to derive the crystal energy resolution and the relative crystal light collection efficiency by fitting the experiment crystal energy spectrum with simulated crystal energy spectrum. The detector module of this study consisted of a 6 by 6 L YSO scintillator array coupled to 4 PMTs. A 2-minute and a 30-minute two dimensional position map (2Dmap) were acquired for evaluating data with short and long scans. With the short acquisition data, we can generally evaluate the performance of the detector. With the long acquisition data, we segmented the 2Dmap and obtained the crystal energy resolutions to be 25% to 45% and the relative crystal light collection efficiency to be 0.43 to 1. We concluded that the 176Lu background radiation could be used to evaluate LYSO and its variant based PET detector module.
Performance comparison of dual-ended readout depth-encoding PET detectors based on BGO and LYSO crystals

Abstract:Abstract The performance of dual-ended readout depth-encoding positron emission tomography (PET) detectors based on bismuth germanate (BGO) coupled to silicon photomultipliers (SiPM) arrays was measured for the first time and compared to lutetium-yttrium oxyorthosilicate (LYSO)-based detectors using the same readout. The BGO and LYSO crystal arrays all had a crystal pitch of 2.2 mm and were coupled to 8 × 8 SiPM arrays with a matching pitch of 2.2 mm, using a one-to-one coupling configuration. Three types of crystals with Toray reflector were used: polished LYSO, polished BGO, and unpolished BGO, and for two different crystal thicknesses of 20 mm and 30 mm. All the crystal elements in the BGO arrays were clearly resolved in the flood histogram. Better flood histograms were obtained using the LYSO arrays for a selected crystal thickness, and better flood histograms were obtained using the 20 mm thick crystal arrays for a selected crystal type. The average crystal level energy resolution and timing resolution for 20 mm polished LYSO, polished BGO and unpolished BGO crystals at their optimal SiPM bias voltage were 18.6 ± 1.3% and 1.19 ± 0.20 ns, 17.8 ± 0.8% and 4.43 ± 0.47 ns, and 18.0 ± 1.0% and 4.68 ± 1.0 ns, respectively. Depth-of-interaction (DOI) resolution of the 20 mm polished LYSO array was 2.31 ± 0.17 mm and for the 20 mm unpolished BGO array was 3.53 ± 0.25 mm. However, polished BGO arrays with Toray reflector did not provide DOI information. Our key conclusion is that dual-ended readout depth-encoding 20 mm thick unpolished BGO detectors are good candidates for low-activity PET systems with small field-of-view and low timing performance requirements, such as preclinical or compact organ-dedicated PET systems, with the advantage over LYSO of having no background radiation and significantly lower cost.

Abstract:Small animal positron emission tomography (PET) is a well-established imaging modality in preclinical biomedical research. The performance of current small animal PET scanners is mainly limited by the detector performance and depth-encoding detectors are required to simultaneously achieve high spatial resolution and high sensitivity. In this work, the performance of a high-resolution dual-ended readout lutetium-yttrium oxyorthosilicate (LYSO) array using barium sulfate powder (BaSO4) as the inter-crystal reflector was measured for the first time and compared to that of a LYSO array using the most commonly used enhanced specular reflector (ESR). Both LYSO arrays have 18 x 18 crystals and the crystal size is about 0.62 x 0.62 x 20 mm(3). The LYSO arrays are readout by two position-sensitive photomultiplier tubes (PSPMTs) from both ends. The flood histograms, energy resolution, depth of interaction (DOI) resolution and timing resolution were measured. The flood histograms of the LYSO array with BaSO4 reflector is much better than that of the LYSO array with ESR reflector. For the BaSO4 array, all crystals can be clearly resolved. For the ESR array, all crystals in one direction can be clearly resolved, but the edge 2-3 columns of the crystals in the other direction cannot be resolved. The average energy resolution of the BaSO4 and ESR arrays are 15.2% and 15.3%, respectively. The average DOI resolution of the BaSO4 array is 2.19 mm, which is 24% worse than the 1.76 mm DOI resolution of the ESR array. The timing resolution of both arrays is similar to 1.6 ns. The LYSO array with the new BaSO4 reflector provided an much better flood histogram in a high resolution dual-ended readout PET detectors as compared to the ESR array, and will be used to develop a small animal PET scanner that can simultaneously achieve uniform high spatial resolution, high sensitivity and low cost.

Abstract:Stticon Photomultiplier (SiPM) is a promising sensor for PET with a number of advantages. A traditional design for PET detector module is using a pixelated scintillator array coupled to a SiPM array, and it is critical to design reflectors between crystals to decode photon event location. Unlike PMT based detectors, the pixelated scintillator array may not necessarily require complex reflector schemes for optimal light sharing. An intuitive design method is to fill the gaps between adjacent crystals with reflective materials such as ESR or BaSO4. However, the manufacture of the array with reflectors is still time-consuming and costly. In this paper, we evaluate the performances of pixelated LYSO arrays separated by only air-gap. A mathematical calculation shows that there is not much difference between reflector based and air-gap based detector module design. Three groups of experiments were conducted based on a home-made 8×8 SiPM array, including a single LYSO crystal with three types of reflector process, three 8×8 LYSO arrays and two 15×15 LYSO arrays with different crystal surface treatments and with air or reflective-material gaps. The results show that the air-gap design for polished LYSO has similar event decoding capability and energy resolution compared with the reflector-filled design. In conclusion, the scintillator arrays with air-gap are simple and feasible for SiPM based detector, which would greatly reduce the cost and manufacture time of detector modules without performance deterioration.

Abstract:High-quality and large-size perovskite single crystals are promising candidates for radiation detection due to outstanding optoelectronic properties. To meet the detector application, large-size crystal ingots need to be sliced and polished. However, the commonly used polishing agent generally corrodes the surface and introduces the defects during the polishing process. Here, we report a top-down method using an improved polishing agent, which does not bring in any major change in morphology. Furthermore, we combine mechanical polishing with chemical passivation to improve the crystal quality. Finally, the surface texture resulting from the etch or recrystallization by precursor solution could be efficiently removed. We achieve high performance radiation detectors based on high-quality and large-size MAPbBr 3 single crystals. The dark current and ion migration of MAPbBr 3 single crystal is significantly suppressed after surface treatment, which enhances the dark current stability over 10 hours. The superior properties enable us to realize a high-performance X-ray detector with the sensitivity of 21,897.44 μC Gy -1 cm -2 and the lowest detection limit of 25 nGy s -1 at 1V bias. Furthermore, a radiographic imaging with 1 mm spatial resolution is demonstrated at a dose rate about 100 nGy s -1 .
