Abstract:Ammonia (NH3), as a carbon-free fuel, has attracted attention for its great potential to reduce carbon emissions in the shipping industry. However, the combustion characteristics of ammonia make its application to marine engines challenging. In this work, an innovative combustion mode is proposed and explored for low-speed twostroke Otto cycle ammonia marine engine: stratified charge assisted jet ignition (SCAJI) mode. The mixture stratification in this mode is characterized by higher ammonia concentration near the cylinder wall and lower ammonia concentration in the cylinder center. The results show that the SCAJI mode can improve the indicated thermal efficiency to 51.04 % when ammonia substitution rate (ASR) is 95 %. Compared to the combustion mode without charge stratification, the unburned NH3 emission is reduced by 97.71 % and nitrogen oxide (NOx) emission is reduced by 20.25 %. The reason for the reduction in NOx emission is higher chemoselectivity of amino group with nitric oxide to nitrogen (DeNOx path) at lower equivalence ratios. In addition, the effects of various operating strategies (e.g., liquid ammonia injection moment, ammonia substitution rate, and global equivalence ratio) on engine performance are investigated. The results shows that the best engine performance is achieved when the liquid ammonia direct injection timing is 85 degrees CA BTDC. Elevated ammonia substitution rate increased NOx and NH3 emissions, but both met IMO Tier III emission standards at ASR <= 95 %. In addition, the engine SCAJI mode maintains stable operation under leaner conditions.
