Abstract:Polymeric membranes have been applied in industrial gas separations for decades. Competing technologies, such as cryogenic distillation and sorption processes, require the gases to be either condensed or thermally regenerated from the sorbents. In contrast, membrane gas separation does not involve phase transition, representing the potential for a more energy efficient and eco-friendly separation process. However, the overall energy consumption by membrane gas separation is highly dependent on the quality of the membrane employed for the separation process. With the goal of reducing the energy input needed for creating the transmembrane pressure difference, numerous bulk polymers have been investigated. However, less effort has been devoted to processing polymers into ultrathin membranes and investigating their gas permeation properties, which can be quite different from their bulk counterparts. This review summarizes recent advances in fabricating ultrathin gas-selective polymeric membranes. Several classes of ultrathin polymeric membranes are highlighted: microporous polymers, facilitated transport polymeric membranes, Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films and Layer-by-Layer (LbL) deposited polyelectrolyte multilayers (PEMs), polyamides and other commercial polymers. The application of gas-selective polymeric membranes beyond gas separation is also included as a meaningful extension to this review.

Abstract:Silicoaluminophosphate-34 (SAPO-34) is a molecular sieve with a unique shape structure and pore framework, favorable acidic properties, and excellent stability under different operating conditions. These unique properties have made SAPO-34 an important material with widespread applications as a catalyst, membrane, and adsorbent in different processes. As a catalyst, SAPO-34 is utilized in converting methanol to olefins (MTO) with outstanding catalytic performance, excellent selectivity, and stability. The only drawback of this molecular sieve is its rapid deactivation in the reaction environment, which hinders its application at large scales. To overcome this drawback, reducing the particle size and tailoring the hierarchal structure have been proposed as two key strategies. As a membrane, SAPO-34 can be exploited in severe conditions (i.e., high temperature and pressure), for example, to separate hydrogen, methane, and carbon dioxide in a membrane reactor, where polymeric membranes cannot be used. In this case, the membrane fabrication method plays a vital role in determining the final performance. With a focus on these applications, this review discusses the preparation of SAPO-34 and its applications as a catalyst in the MTO reaction and as a membrane in gas separation. Key strategies to improve its properties and performance are elaborated. Lastly, complementary applications of this molecular sieve are briefly discussed. This review may provide helpful insights for the development of high-performance SAPO-34-based materials to be applied in different industries.Graphical abstract

Abstract:Recent research progress in both synthetic methods and applications of zeolite membranes were reviewed. Various synthetic methods for zeolite membranes, namely in-situ hydrothermal method, seeding method, pore-plugging method, microwave heating method, pulsed-laser deposition method, electrophoretic deposition method, defect free and membrane adulteration, were introduced. Also, the applications of zeolite membranes in separations of xylene isomers, mixture of alcohol and water, mixture of CO 2-N 2 (and or CO 2-CH 4), and catalysis of xylene isomerization, dehydrogenation and other reactions were introduced. Further trends in zeolite membranes research were forecasted.

Abstract:Silicoaluminophosphate zeolite (SAPO-34) has been attracting increasing attention due to its excellent form selection and controllability in the chemical industry, as well as being one of the best industrial catalysts for methanol-to-olefin (MTO) reaction conversion. However, as a microporous molecular sieve, SAPO-34 easily generates carbon deposition and rapidly becomes inactivated. Therefore, it is necessary to reduce the crystal size of the zeolite or to introduce secondary macropores into the zeolite crystal to form a hierarchical structure in order to improve the catalytic effect. In this review, the synthesis methods of conventional SAPO-34 molecular sieves, hierarchical SAPO-34 molecular sieves and nanosized SAPO-34 molecular sieves are introduced, and the properties of the synthesized SAPO-34 molecular sieves are described, including the phase, morphology, pore structure, acid source, and catalytic performance, in particular with respect to the synthesis of hierarchical SAPO-34 molecular sieves. We hope that the review can provide guidance to the preparation of the SAPO-34 catalysts, and stimulate the future development of high-performance hierarchical SAPO-34 catalysts to meet the growing demands of the material and chemical industries.
Advances in Preparation and Applications of LTA Zeolite Membranes

Abstract:Advances in synthesis methods and applications of LTA zeolite membranes were reviewed. Static hydrothermal syntheses including direct and seeded growth syntheses, dynamic hydrothermal synthesis and other new syntheses(e. g. vacuum-assisted synthesis) of the LTA zeolite membranes were introduced. Supports for the LTA zeolite membranes, namely α-Al2O3, TiO2, stainless steel, ZrO2 and organic-inorganic composite supports were stated. Applications of the LTA zeolite membranes to organics dehydration and gas separation were summarized. Finally, development trend for the research of the LTA zeolite membranes were indicated, that preparation of the supports would be key factor for the extensive use of the LTA zeolite membranes in industry.

Abstract:Membrane-based gas separation, characterized by a small footprint, low energy consumption and no pollution, has gained widespread attention as an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional gas separation. Metal–organic-frameworks (MOFs) are considered to be one of the most promising membrane-based gas separation materials because of their large specific surface area and high porosity. One of the hottest studies at the moment is how to utilize the characteristics of MOFs to prepare higher performance gas separation membranes. This paper provides a review of gas separation membranes used in recent years. Firstly, the synthesis methods of MOFs and MOF membranes are briefly introduced. Then, methods to improve the membrane properties of MOFs are described in detail, and include applications of lamellar MOFs, ionic liquid (IL) spin coating, functionalization of MOFs, defect engineering and mixed fillers. In addition, the challenges of MOF-based gas separation membranes are presented, including pore size, environmental disturbances, plasticization, interfacial compatibility, and so on. Finally, based on the current development status of the MOF membranes, the development prospects of MOF gas separation membranes are discussed. It is hoped to provide reliable and complete ideas for researchers to prepare high-performance gas separation membranes in the future.

Abstract:Membrane-based separation techniques have attracted multidisciplinary attention due to their low energy consumption, low pollution and high efficiency properties. Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) are considered to be promising membrane candidates due to their tunable porous structure, large specific surface area, adjustable pore size, uniformly distributed metal centers and abundant functional groups. In this review, recent researches on controlled strategies for MOF membranes synthesis and their applications in gas and liquid separations are summarized. The synthesis strategies of MOF membranes involved layer-by-layer growth method, electrochemical synthesis, in-situ growth and other novelty methods. The advantages and disadvantages are carefully reviewed and compared. The applications and related separation mechanisms of MOF membranes in gas separation (i.e., C3H6/C3H8, H2/CO2, H2/CH4, N2/CH4) and liquid separation (i.e., ion separation, seawater desalination, organic solvent purification) are discussed individually. Finally, challenges and future perspective are pointed out. This review is expected to provide an insight view for the production and applications of highly efficient MOF membranes in gas and liquid separations.

Abstract:Zeolite membranes demonstrated great separation performance for many important separation processes, however, high membrane cost is a major obstacle for its commercial application. Reducing membrane thickness is an effective way of lowering its unit cost, which requires a delicate control of nucleation and crystallization processes. Herein, the effect of seed size on the separation performance of SAPO-34 membranes was studied. Smaller seeds facilitated secondary nucleation which led to thinner membrane with higher CO2 permeance. Ball-milling of regular SAPO-34 crystals can generate ultra-small seed particles easily, which is even better than tailor-made nano SAPO-34 seeds on reducing membrane thickness. Thin SAPO-34 membrane with thickness ∼1.4 μm can be prepared with high reproducibility and high CO2 permeance ∼10.2×10-7 mol·m-2·s-1·Pa-1 and CO2-CH4 selectivity of 59 were obtained for the separation of equalmolar CO2-CH4 mixture at 4.0 MPa and room temperature.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are porous crystalline materials assembled from organic ligands and metallic secondary building blocks. Their special structural composition gives them the advantages of high porosity, high specific surface area, adjustable pore size, and good stability. MOF membranes and MOF-based mixed-matrix membranes prepared from MOF crystals have ultra-high porosity, uniform pore size, excellent adsorption properties, high selectivity, and high throughput, which contribute to their being widely used in separation fields. This review summarizes the synthesis methods of MOF membranes, including in situ growth, secondary growth, and electrochemical methods. Mixed-matrix membranes composed of Zeolite Imidazolate Frameworks (ZIF), University of Oslo (UIO), and Materials of Institute Lavoisier (MIL) frameworks are introduced. In addition, the main applications of MOF membranes in lithium–sulfur battery separators, wastewater purification, seawater desalination, and gas separation are reviewed. Finally, we review the development prospects of MOF membranes for the large-scale application of MOF membranes in factories.

Abstract:Biogas consisting of carbon dioxide/methane (CO2/CH4) gas mixtures has emerged as an alternative renewable fuel to natural gas. The presence of CO2 can decrease the calorific value and generate greenhouse gas. Hence, separating CO2 from CH4 is a vital step in enhancing the use of biogas. Zeolite and zeolite-based mixed matrix membrane (MMM) is considered an auspicious candidate for CO2/CH4 separation due to thermal and chemical stability. This review initially addresses the development of zeolite and zeolite-based MMM for the CO2/CH4 separation. The highest performance in terms of CO2 permeance and CO2/CH4 selectivity was achieved using zeolite and zeolite-based MMM, which exhibited CO2 permeance in the range of 2.0 × 10- 7-7.0 × 10- 6 mol m- 2 s- 1 Pa- 1 with CO2/CH4 selectivity ranging from 3 to 300. Current trends directed toward improving CO2/CH4 selectivity via modification methods including post-treatment, ion-exchanged, amino silane-grafted, and ionic liquid encapsulated of zeolite-based MMM. Those modification methods improved the defect-free and interfacial adhesions between zeolite particulates and polymer matrices and subsequently enhanced the CO2/CH4 selectivity. The modifications via ionic liquid and silane methods more influenced the CO2/CH4 selectivity with 90 and 660, respectively. This review also focuses on the possible applications of zeolite-based MMM, which include the purification and treatment of water as well as biomedical applications. Lastly, future advances and opportunities for gas separation applications are also briefly discussed. This review aims to share knowledge regarding zeolite-based MMM and inspire new industrial applications.
Affecting the Formation of the Micro‐structure and Meso/macro‐structure of SAPO‐34 Zeolite by Amphipathic Molecules

Abstract:SAPO‐34 is an important member in the family of zeolites, which shows excellent catalytic activity in MTO reaction, but suffers from the diffusion bottleneck. To overcome the diffusion problem, porogen was added to generate meso/macro pores in SAPO‐34 zeolite. In this work, amphipathic molecules were designed as CSDA to synthesize a tri‐level hierarchically porous SAPO‐34, and the introduction of CSDA could promote the Si atoms incorporating into the AlPO4 framework, change the morphology of particles and decrease the acidity of prepared SAPO‐34 zeolite. The prepared SAPO‐34 catalyst exhibits higher selectivity of C2H4 and C3H6 in the MTO reaction than the conventional SAPO‐34 zeolite. The morphology and the microstructure of the prepared samples vary with the carbon chain of the amphipathic molecules due to the matching between amphipathic molecules and topological structure of CHA.
Synthesis of thin SAPO-34 zeolite membranes in concentrated gel

Abstract:Synthesis of thin zeolite membranes in the sub-micron range is desirable but a great challenge. Despite the successful synthesis of ultrathin Silicalite-1 and CHA membranes, the pursuit of SAPO-34 membranes thinner than 1 μm remains difficult. Herein, thin SAPO-34 membranes were prepared in concentrated gel by conventional hydrothermal synthesis. Concentrated membrane gel (TEAOH/Al2O3 = 4 and H2O/Al2O3 = 10) enhanced nucleation and facilitated the formation of small SAPO-34 crystals and therefore thin membranes. High TEAOH/Al2O3 ratio and special mixing sequence resulted into a homogeneous membrane gel with low viscosity which is beneficial for membrane synthesis with high reproducibility. Al(OH)3 as Al source led to formation of cubic SAPO-34 crystals which facilitated crystal intergrowth and reduced defects. These membranes (∼1.2 μm thick) exhibited high CO2 permeance of 3.9 × 10−6 mol/(m2 s Pa) and CO2–CH4 selectivity of 152 for equimolar CO2–CH4 mixture at room temperature and 0.14 MPa pressure drop. Further optimization of aging treatment or limiting the excessive membrane growth by a two-step hydrothermal synthesis + dry gel conversion method, the membrane thickness was successfully reduced to ∼0.9 μm, which increased the CO2 permeance to ∼5.0 × 10−6 mol/(m2 s Pa) without sacrificing CO2–CH4 selectivity.

Abstract:Porous and crystalline materials such as zeolites and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have expanded the scope of membrane materials. In this review, we focus on the state-of-the-art polycrystalline membranes fabricated from these materials, as well as their crystalline structure, uniform microporosity and molecular-sieving capacity. We first discuss the basics of membrane-based separations and compare the transport properties between dense polymeric membranes and porous polycrystalline membranes. Subsequently, we evaluate the performance of polycrystalline zeolite/MOF membranes in applications such as gas separation, organic solvent nanofiltration, water purification, ion separation and chiral separation. Finally, we present a comparison between zeolite membranes and MOF membranes in terms of synthesis and chemical tunability.

Abstract:Membrane-based separation is an essential part of water purification, however, traditional polymeric membranes suffer from a trade-off limitation between selectivity and permeability. In recent years, owing to high porosity and adjustable pore structure, 2D metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), covalent-organic framework (COFs), and zeolites exhibit promising potential in the separation membranes to break the trade-off law. In this comprehensive review, we endeavour to present the state-of-art progress on 2D MOFs , COFs and zeolites nanosheets as ideal candidates for membrane separations with a particular emphasis on the water-related applications. Recent researches on the typical fabrication methods for the above 2D porous nanosheets are summarized. The assembling strategies into pure 2D porous membranes involve in-situ growth and layer stacking assembly, while 2D MMMs normally employ phase-inversion or interfacial polymerization methods. Subsequently, particular attention is devoted to introduce the latest advances on these novel membranes for water-related separation processes, including desalination, heavy metals removal, oil/water separation, dyes, pharmaceutical and agricultural pollutants separations. Finally, challenges and future perspective for the industrial implementation of these membranes are pointed out. This review is expected to provide an insight view for the production and applications of highly efficient 2D porous membranes in water-related separations.

Abstract:Since the second industrial revolution, the use of fossil fuels has been powering the advance of human society. However, the surge in carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions has raised unsettling concerns about global warming and its consequences. Membrane separation technologies have emerged as one of the major carbon reduction approaches because they are less energy-intensive and more environmentally friendly compared to other separation techniques. Compared to pure polymeric membranes, mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) that encompass both a polymeric matrix and molecular sieving fillers have received tremendous attention, as they have the potential to combine the advantages of both polymers and molecular sieves, while cancelling out each other’s drawbacks. In this review, we will discuss recent advances in the development of MMMs for CO2 separation. We will discuss general mechanisms of CO2 separation in an MMM, and then compare the performances of MMMs that are based on zeolite, MOF, metal oxide nanoparticles and nanocarbons, with an emphasis on the materials’ preparation methods and their chemistries. As the field is advancing fast, we will particularly focus on examples from the last 5 years, in order to provide the most up-to-date overview in this area.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), owing to their ordered porous structure, ease of synthesis, and versatility of surface functionalization have attracted significant research interests for membrane-based separations. Zeolitic-imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs), a subclass of MOFs, have drawn the most research attention by virtue of their ease of forming high-quality membranes and potential in hydrocarbon mixture separations. Other MOF-based membranes such as IRMOFs, HKUST-1, MILs, UiOs, etc., were also well-studied for hydrogen purification and carbon capture. In this review, we summarize a chronological development of MOF membranes for gas separations, focusing on ZIF-8 membranes for C3H6/C3H8 separation. Other MOF membranes for H2/CO2, CO2/CH4, and CO2/N2 separations are also reviewed. Following this, we provide a thorough assessment and evaluation of the engineering challenges, including cost-effectiveness, module design, and membrane stability and reproducibility for industrial scale-up. Finally, we provide our point of view on future research and development in the area.
